An excellent book for the understanding of gait in dogs. It allows a untrained person to understand and see gait faults that may be potential problems for the dog later. And absolute must for anyone planning to show or breed dogs and also useful for the any potential owner in picking out a new pet.

This book appears to have all info necessary for keeping lovebirds. It was an enjoyable read, an easy read and not boring, the author knew what he was talking about.

1 out of 5 stars Only good for the pictures and a tiny bit of info.......2005-05-14

This book is TERRIBLE for the first time lovebird owner. I bought this book a couple years back and ended up not following much of the advice because I found an experienced bird person at an awesome bird store. Thank goodness!
Among the blatant lies in this man's book are:
1. Handle your lovebird with gloves.
NEVER handle a parrot with gloves on. It scares them. If you are afraid of being bitten, don't buy a bird.
2. Saying handfed lovebirds are only friendly to the person who handfed them.
LIE. Handfed birds are very friendly and will easily bond with their human flock.
3. (my favorite) "Children must be told that lovebirds ordinarily can't be carried around the room on a shoulder or finger."
Care to explain why my SINGLE lovebird loves to sit on my shoulder and easily steps up for me?
4. They will never learn to imitate.
5. They must be kept singly.
I can't even begin to argue this one. It's ludicrous.
My recommendation? Don't buy this book!
It will only lead to many unhappy, unhealthy lovebirds. This man should have his right to write taken away.

4 out of 5 stars They can be little loves.............2004-04-11

As the owner of six new love birds, I found Matthew Vriends LOVEBIRDS A Complete Owner's Manual relatively helpful. I knew little about love birds when I read the book and know a only a little more now. The book did not answer many of my questions, though it raised a few points about love birds I would never have asked. For example, the caption of one photograph says the coloration of the peach-faced lutino lovew bird is sex linked, however, I could not discover which sex was linked. This book is not nearly as comprehensive (or thick) as the title leads one to believe nor is it filled with as much information as other books in the `Barrons' series on parrots including the Senegal and African Grey, however the book is filled with lovely photographs and a number of illustrative drawings.

LOVEBIRDS includes text and maps describing the origins of various types of birds in the family. Vriends apparently owns love birds which he maintains in an outdoor aviary. He includes a good deal of information about keeping love birds in outdoor aviaries, so some of his information such as dealing with frozen toes and vermin that attack birds living aviaries (ticks, rats, mice, etc.) as well as raising love bird babies, may be less than useful for folks like me who keep birds indoors and want to understand "beak fighting" know in advance that clipping their little wings may make it difficult for them to move around an aviary. Although these cute little guys are accused by some of being less than loving, my short experience has shown me that plenty of seed cups and members of the opposite sex alleviates some of the rivalry.

1 out of 5 stars No Way.......2002-12-10

Cute pictures and thats all. Bad info...says you shouldn't have a single lovebird! Thats ubsurd. I have one sitting on my shoulder right now and shes definately happy. It is true you have to spend a lot of time with a single lovie but I know its possible!!

4 out of 5 stars The Lovebird's Bible.......2002-02-04

Faith, our Peach-faced Lovebird thanx the author, Matthew Vriends
many times over for writing this book. Small in size, easy on the pocketbook, yet filled with a wealth of wisdom about raising & caring for these precious creatures of God.
From hand feeding to housing, playing to protecting, care and concerns, how to, don't do, in simple language, "Lovebirds" is a winner!
The information on illness, disease,& what to do, was invaluable. In fact, we were able to proceed in Faith's best health interest before the Vet's visit.
Buy it, highlight, read, & reread this wonderful owner's companion.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Understanding The Stallion - Technical but not practical.......2001-01-17

Understanding the Stallion is a fairly short, detailed book, bursting with information pertaining to stallion management and breeding. This book does not, however, go into the mental aspects of the stallion in much depth, as I was hoping it would. Also, the book fails to take into account the fact that every stallion has his own personality, and that they each require a different approach, whether this is in the breeding shed or in the stable.

This book cannot be flawed for its scientific and technical statements. The descriptions of the stallion's anatomy are very detailed, as are the diagrams, and the text is phrased carefully so that the author can be understood, even to the least scientifically inclined person.

This book is a worthwhile purchase for the first time stallion owner, or to anyone that is considering buying a stallion for the first time, either for competition or breeding. More experienced horse people may find the book a little light on practical information, but nonetheless useful. A recommended read to all stallion owners and breeders.

2 out of 5 stars Moderately informative.......1999-07-05

This book is very general and gives the reader a light overview. Personal opinions such as writing that some think the Shih Tzu acts like a spoiled child make me wonder if the author has some negative perceptions about the dog. This is not scientific - all dogs in this breed have different personalities! It's like saying all toy dogs are yappy or that all pit bulls are mean. I picked up other negative perceptions - for example, The author states that Shih Tzus are stubborn and can be hard to housebreak. This is not true in my experience. This book is informative; I only hope no new puppy owners feel disenchanted with their new dog after they read this book. When housebreaking ,for example, the trainer needs to start off with a positive mindset.

Book Description

Owls are spectacular and fascinating birds, both in the wild and in captivity, with interest in keeping and breeding them rapidly increasing. The author shares her expertise, gained from a lifetimes experience of working with birds of prey, to give sound practical advice on how to care for these magnificent creatures, with chapters on housing and equipment, incubation and rearing, and training and flying owls.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not quite so understanding........2004-09-27

Having had a passion for Owls since I was a boy, it was only a matter of time (and the right amount of land) before I began keeping them. Initially, I learned a great deal from knowledgeable friends who's support continues. It wasn't long, however, before some of the well-meaning advice from one friend was being contradicted by another and occasionally I needed to consult a more expert source altogether.

I had already come across this author's name and a book with the title "Understanding Owls" seemed exactly what I needed. What a pity that the one message which comes across from this book - Loud and Clear, is that the Owl is not Miss Parry-Jones' favourite bird. In fact, I don't think she likes them at all. Having read the book and certain sections more than once, I am left thinking perhaps it is the author who needs to learn a little "understanding."

Commencing with a short section on taxonomy and where the Owl fits in to the overall scheme of things, we then find coverage of such subjects as biology, distribution/habitat, diet, feeding, reproduction, survival and status before coming on to the all-important topic of keeping them. It is here that the author tries to deter the would-be keeper by commencing with the subject of "Problems" and immediately exaggerates the noise owls create. After a page on "Giving a Home to Wild Disabled Birds" she summarises what she has written so far with the words "So what have we got? Owls are noisy, and generally not much fun just to watch in a pen; that leaves us with owls for breeding and flying." (Incidentally, the errors in punctuation and grammar are not mine).

So far, her own down-beat attitude towards these magnificent birds makes you wonder why she bothers keeping them at all. Furthermore, you could be forgiven for thinking she was being forced to write this book against her will.

All that said, those first 40 pages then prove to be nothing more than a rather poor introduction to what now becomes a fairly useful book. Whilst still encountering the anti-owl sentiment here and there, we are now treated to the well described and illustrated subjects of; Housing, breeding, management, incubation, rearing, training and hunting.

Sadly, just as we were beginning to smile, the author returns to a very down-beat message at the end under the heading "Hunting." The message here has nothing whatsoever to do with hunting or even what is involved, just a couple of anecdotes about problems experienced by other people coupled with the author's wish to put off the reader at all costs. A bit like "I've started (in this way) - so I'll finish (in this way)." Which is altogether a great pity because this book could have been so much better.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2002-01-18

This book is truely great!! It has provided me with the vital information required to keep an Owl. The chapter on training the bird was most interesting and continues to be most useful!! I recommend this book to anyone seriously considering to going into Owls, you won't regret it!!

4 out of 5 stars Understanding Owls - Boring? Or a hoot?.......2000-06-04

I purchased this title after reading her second book: "Understanding Birds of Prey"; and I found this to have been both an interesting and informative read. This book, lives up to, if not exceeds that high standard that her preceeding books have set. When I hope to purchase an owl of my own, this book will act as my bible! Her unique, if not aggressive, writing style makes other Birds of Prey authors seem almost lax in their approach to informing the reader. Well worth the money spent and allows one to make an informed decision regarding captive birds.

            Book Description

This book provides an up-to-date and comprehensive account of quasars and active galactic nuclei (AGN). The latest observations and theoretical models are combined in this clear, pedagogic textbook for advanced undergraduates and graduate students. Researchers will also find this wide-ranging and coherent review invaluable. Throughout, detailed derivations of important results are provided to ensure the book is self contained. And theories and models are critically compared with detailed and often puzzling observations from across the spectrum. We are led through all the key topics, including quasar surveys, continuum radiation, time variability, relativistic beaming, accretion disks, jet sidedness, gravitational lensing, unification and detailed, multi-wavelength studies of individual objects. Particular emphasis is placed on radio, X- and gamma-ray observations--not covered in depth in any previous book. All those entering into this exciting and dynamic area of astronomy research will find this book an ideal introduction.
