Techniques for Mycorrhizal Research
J. R. Norris , D. Read , and A. K. Varma Manufacturer: Academic Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0125214901 |
Book Description
It is now almost ten years since the appearance of the only previous volume devoted to the methodologies used in mycorrhizal research. The past decade has been a momentous period which has seen not only an explosiveincrease of interest in mychorrhiza as evidenced by the surge in number of papers published, but also, and most importantly, the welcome development of a greater awareness amongst plant physiologists, ecologists, and microbiologists that the mycorrhizal condition is the norm rather than the exception. Through this same period, sophisticated new technologies (e.g. NMR, RFLP, DNA mediated transformation, immunocytochemistry), which are readily applicable to mycorrhizal research, have become widely available. These changes have given rise to an urgent need for a comprehensive and up-to-date source book of techniques which can be routinely used in laboratories involved in mychorrhizal research to facilitate and increase the effectiveness of their research. This comb-bound work is designed to meet this need. The volumes are divided so that the first part emphasizes a description of techniques applicable to ectomycorrhizal and ericoid systems, while the second stresses vesicular-arbuscular systems. Each contains a mix of papers, written by the leading authorities in their fields, which emphasize techniques, but which also include up-to-date reviews of particular topics such as carbon, metabolism, nitrogen metabolism, and applied aspects. The methods whereby, and the extent to which, mychorrhizal inoculation can be used to facilitate revegetation, as well as increases of agricultural or forest productivity are also described.

Mycorrhizal Symbiosis, Second Edition
Sally E. Smith , and David J. Read Manufacturer: Academic Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0126528403 |
Book Description
In nature, the roots of most plants are colonized by symbiotic fungi to form mycorrhiza, which play a critical role in the capture of nutrients from the soil, and therefore in plant nutrition. Thirteen years have passed since the publication of the First Edition of Mycorrhizal Symbiosis, the book that has been generally acclaimed as the most definitive work on this fascinating topic. The Second Edition co-authored by Professor Sally Smith and Professor David Read has been completely rewritten to cover the significant advances in our understanding of this field.Customer Reviews:

Arbuscular Mycorrhizas: Physiology and Function
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0792364449 |
Book Description
This book provides a structured compilation of reviews of what is known about arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis. Topics were selected to cover major steps in the life cycle of AM fungi (germination, signaling/recognition prior to colonization, and host regulation of colonization). Aspects of the physiological interaction within the root for which there has been exciting recent progress (regulation of host defenses, bidirectional transport of nutrients, modification of gene expression, and carbon metabolism) are then discussed. The focus then widens to effects of the mycorrhiza upon the whole plant (nutrition, water relations, reproduction, and resistance to disease), and expands further to essential aspects of the role of AM fungi in soil ecology (soil aggregation, and interactions with other soil microbes). Leaders in the field present critical reviews and point toward areas for future research. Therefore, this volume should be helpful for both researchers in the field and those interested in a thorough knowledge of this important symbiosis.Customer Reviews:

Concepts in Mycorrhizal Research (Handbook of Vegetation Science)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0792338901 |
Book Description
Mycorrhiza will be the focus of research and study for the coming decade. Successful survival and maintenance of plant cover is mostly dependent on mycorrhization. During the last decade about ten books have appeared on various aspects of mycorrhiza, including two on methodology. The present book has been compiled to give a complete and comprehensive description of the topic to the students and researchers in botany, applied mycology, biotechnology, forestry and agriculture. The book will also be useful to planners dealing with biofertilizers and forestation. Besides topics of academic interest, the volume includes several aspects which are unique and are written about for the first time, e.g.: Arbuscular Mycorrhizal symbiosis - recognition and specificity; Mycorrhizal Integration and cellular compatibility between Endomycorrhizal symbionts; Cost - economics of existing methodology for inoculum production of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi; Mycorrhiza: Ecological Implications of Plant interactions; Outplanting performance of mycorrhizal inoculated seedlings; Fluorescence microscopy in mycorrhiza studies and Ectomycorrhizal fungi as experimental organism. Other aspects not mentioned above include most recent reviews concerning vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhiza and ectomycorrhizae. The different review chapters have been written by world authorities in their respective specialisations giving more up to date information than is provided anywhere else. This book deals with all major aspects of mycorrhiza, giving structure, ultrastructure, ecology and applications in agriculture and forestry.

Microbial Activity in the Rhizosphere (Soil Biology)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540291822 |
Book Description
The rhizosphere is a very complex environment. The interactions among microorganisms and the plant roots are essential for the nutrition, growth and productivity of the plant. On the other hand, the microorganisms also benefit from their interactions with the plant. Rhizosphere studies are of interest to agriculturists, soil biologists, chemists, microbiologists and molecular biologists.
Microbial Activity in the Rhizosphere will be useful to the beginner as well as to experienced scientists. It starts with contributions dealing with the basic concepts in rhizosphere biology and the techniques used in these studies. Further topics include the bacterial community composition, rhizosphere of arbuscular mycorrhizal roots, significance of AM fungi in relation to form and functioning of the root system, the role of microsymbionts in plant growth and health, and the impact of rhizosphere environment on pre-infection behaviour of Oomycetous plant pathogens like Aphanomyces, Phytophthora and Pythium.

Mycorrhizal Biology
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 030646294X |
Book Description
`The fundamental problem the world faces today, is the rapidly increasing pressure of population on the limited resources of the land. To meet the ever increasing demands of expanding populations, agricultural production has been raised through the abundant use of inorganic fertilizers, the adoption of multicropping systems and liberal application of chemical pesticides (fungicides, bactericides, etc. ). Though the use of chemicals has increased the yield dramatically, it has also resulted in the rapid deterioration of land and water resources apart from wastage of scarce resources. This has adversely affected the biological balance and lead to the presence of toxic residues in food, soil and water in addition to imposing economic constraints on developing countries.' (From the Preface) Mycorrhizal Biology addresses the global problem of land degradation and the associated loss of soil productivity and decline in soil quality caused by exploitative farming practices and poor management in developing countries, and the far reaching socio-economic and ecological consequences of its impact on agricultural productivity and the environment. In the light of a need for sustainable development, a new system of productive agriculture, to ensure the efficient management of agricultural inputs for long term high crop productivity with minimum damage to the ecological and socio-economic environment is essential. The management of mycorrhizal fungi will form a significant part of such a system and this work investigates the key association of plant roots with mycorrhizal fungi, known to benefit plants under conditions of nutritional and water stress and pathogen challenge and analyses the developments in our understanding of the genetic loci that govern mycorrhiza formation.

Mycorrhizal Ecology (Ecological Studies)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540424075 |
Book Description
There is increasing awareness among biologists that mutualistic interactions play a key role in natural communities. One of the best-known examples of a mutualistic interaction is the mycorrhizal symbiosis formed between soil fungi and the majority of plants. These symbioses are present in almost all terrestrial ecosystems and yet, until recently, their contributions to the functioning of those ecosystems have been poorly understood. This multi-authored book gives an overview of recent advances and breakthroughs. The contributions of all the major mycorrhizal types to plant population biology, multitrophic interactions, biological diversity, ecosystem functioning, global change and evolution are given. This volume shows that collaboration in the rhizosphere is essential for plants, microbes, plant communities and ecosystems. It has been written with ecologists in mind, giving them easy access to an understanding of how these important interactions could shape our ecosystems.

Infrared and Submillimeter Space Missions in the Coming Decade: Programmes, Programmatics, and Technology
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0792336194 |
Book Description
A revolution similar to that brought by CCDs to visible astronomy is still ahead in IR and submillimeter astronomy. There is certainly no wavelength range which has, over the past several years, seen such impressive advances in technology: large-scale detector arrays, new designs for cooling in space, lightweight mirror technologies. Scientific cases for observing the cold universe are outstanding. Observations in the FIR/Submm range will provide answers to such fundamental questions as: What is the spectrum of the primordial fluctuations? How do primeval galaxies look? What are the first stages of star formation? Most of the international space missions that have been triggered by these questions are presented in detail here. Technological issues raised by these missions are reviewed, as are the most recent achievements in cooling and detector technologies.
