Visual Astronomy Under Dark Skies: A New Approach to Observing Deep Space
Antony Cooke Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1852339012 |
Book Description
Modern astronomical telescopes, along with other advances in technology, have brought the deep sky – star clusters, nebulae and the galaxies – within reach of amateur astronomers. And it isn’t even necessary to image many of these deep-sky objects in order to see them; they are within reach of visual observers using modern techniques and enhancement technology. The first requirement is truly dark skies; if you are observing from a light-polluted environment you need Tony Cooke’s book, Visual Astronomy in the Suburbs. Given a site with clear, dark night skies everything else follows… this book will provide the reader with everything he needs to know about what to observe, and using some of today’s state-of-the-art technique and commercial equipment, how to get superb views of faint and distant astronomical objects.

Giant Telescopes: Astronomical Ambition and the Promise of Technology
W. Patrick McCray Manufacturer: Harvard University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0674019962 |
Book Description
Every night, astronomers use a new generation of giant telescopes at observatories around the world to study phenomena at the forefront of science. By focusing on the history of the Gemini Observatory--twin 8-meter telescopes located on mountain peaks in Hawaii and Chile--Giant Telescopes tells the story behind the planning and construction of modern scientific tools, offering a detailed view of the technological and political transformation of astronomy in the postwar era.
Drawing on interviews with participants and archival documents, W. Patrick McCray describes the ambitions and machinations of prominent astronomers, engineers, funding patrons, and politicians in their effort to construct a modern facility for cutting-edge science--and to establish a model for international cooperation in the coming era of "megascience." His account details the technological, institutional, cultural, and financial challenges that scientists faced while planning and building a new generation of giant telescopes. Besides exploring how and why scientists embraced the promise and potential of new technologies, he considers how these new tools affected what it means to be an astronomer. McCray's book should interest anyone who desires a deeper understanding of the science, technology, and politics behind finding our place in the universe.

The post-war development of US astronomy.......2004-05-09
McCray has worked hard to produce a very readable
account. Whether you are a practising astronomer or
interested in how hard it is to synthesize US scientific
opinion, this is well worth reading.

21st Century Complete Guide to U. S. Navy Research: Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), Office of Naval Research (ONR), Navy Warfare Development Command ¿ History and Ongoing Projects, Materials, Radar, Rockets, Oceanography, Astronomy, Space Systems, Nanoscience, Fleet and Ship Innovations and Improvements, Sea Shield and Sea Strike Programs, Sensors, Bioengineering, Neural Computation
Department of Defense Manufacturer: Progressive Management ProductGroup: Book Binding: CD-ROM ASIN: 1592481272 |
Book Description
This comprehensive CD-ROM provides a thorough guide to the work of three major elements of U.S. Navy research: the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), the Office of Naval Research (ONR), and the Navy Warfare Development Command. Elements of their important research, which has frequently extended well beyond the specific needs of the U.S. Navy, include materials, radar, rockets, oceanography, astronomy, space systems, nanoscience, fleet and ship innovations and improvements, sea shield and sea strike programs, sensors, bioengineering, and even neural computation. The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) is famous for its wide-ranging research. NRL is the corporate research laboratory for the Navy and Marine Corps and conducts a broad program of scientific research, technology and advanced development. NRL has served the Navy and the nation for nearly 80 years and continues to meet the complex technological challenges of today's world. NRL has made many distinguished contributions to military science and technology and to the transition of that science and technology to practical application. Systems - Information about historical achievements in radar, communications and navigation systems. Rockets - Ground breaking NRL achievements in early space programs. Solar & Lunar Studies - A look at fifty years of NRL research on phenomena associated with the sun and recent landscapes of the moon. Astronomy - NRL achievements in the fields of astronomy and cosmic ray physics. Ocean & Environment - Accomplishments in ocean research, ozone studies, meteorology and storm prediction. Materials - NRL materials that have shaped the way we live and build towards a better future.
The Office of Naval Research (ONR) sponsors science and technology in support of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Founded in 1946, ONR today funds work at more than 450 universities, laboratories, and other organizations. From oceanography, advanced materials, sensors, and robotics to biomedical science and technology; from electronics, surveillance, and neurotechnology to manufacturing technology and information science; from advanced combat systems to other technologies for ships, submarines, aircraft, and ground vehicles-work ONR sponsored has produced the laser, the Global Positioning System, 50 Nobel prizes, and thousands of other discoveries and products used every day around the world.
Navy Warfare Development Command - The NWDC Concepts Development Department introduces new concepts to the fleet, harvests fleet ideas, and generates comprehensive dialogues to fully explore each concept's merits. In doing so the NWDC Concepts Department collaboratively develops products with selected experts to ensure that our products incorporate Fleet feedback, recommendations and perspectives. By keeping the Navy informed and engaged, both NWDC and the fleet will realize real war fighting benefits as concepts transition to doctrine, organization, training and equipment. The Navy Tactical Development and Evaluation (TAC D&E) Program is the principal means for addressing the Fleet's current tactical/doctrinal concerns. This program provides management, coordination, funding, contracting and quality control for Fleet sponsored projects that develop tactics, techniques and procedures (NTTP's) for naval forces.
Over 14,000 pages are reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software - allowing direct viewing on Windows and Apple Macintosh systems. Reader software is included.
Our CD-ROMs are privately-compiled collections of official public domain U.S. government files and documents - they are not produced by the federal government. Innovation in Astronomy Education
Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0521880157 |
Book Description
Astronomy leads to an understanding of the history and nature of science, and attracts many young people to education in science and technology. But while in many countries astronomy is not part of the standard curriculum, many scientific and educational societies and government agencies have produced materials and educational resources in astronomy for all educational levels. This volume highlights the general strategies for effective teaching and introduces innovative points of view regarding methods of teaching and learning, particularly those using new technologies. Technology is used in astronomy both for obtaining observations and for teaching. The book also presents ideas for how astronomy can be connected to environmental issues and other topics of public interest. This valuable overview is based on papers and posters presented by many of the world’s leading astronomy educators at a Special Session of the International Astronomical Union General Assembly in Prague in 2006.
