Book Description
"My belief is that we can all find the rhythms and harmonics of our celestial music, and that our efforts will enable us to live extraordinary lives filled with peace, passion, health, and a sense of unity with the universe."
We are all familiar with the tremendous power of sound to energize our bodies and soothe our spirits, whether we experience it in the form of rousing music or in the hushed noise of waves on a beach at night. A pioneer in the revolutionary new field of sound medicine, Dr. Mitchell Gaynor, a leading oncologist and director of integrative medicine at the Strang-Cornell Cancer Prevention Center, has been using sound as complementary therapy in the form of chanting, music, and quartz crystal bowls to treat patients since 1991 with remarkable results. In
Sounds of Healing, he shares his philosophy and sound-based techniques for self-healing, which can be used by anyone, whether faced with a life-threatening disease or simply seeking relief from the stresses of daily life.
Sound, voice, and music are potent tools for restoring the inner balance of the body and awakening the spirit. Dr. Gaynor explores the science behind how and why sound and vibration affect us on a physiological level and outlines the sound traditions and practices that promote relaxation and body-mind healing. Rooted in the musical principles of entrainment, resonance, toning, and harmonics, his methods help us achieve overall wellness, greater energy, and the realization of our highest spiritual potential.
His easy-to-follow exercises include:
Life Songs--Discover your personal, mantra-like song that resonates with your own particular essence and use it as a means to healing and self-discovery
Essence Sound Meditation--Use your voice or another instrument to help you rise above everyday worries, relieve stress, and begin the healing process
Energetic Re-creation--Give voice to your emotional conflicts and create new blends of sound to help you resolve them
Dr. Gaynor also describes his unique vision for a holistic approach to medicine that treats the whole person and creates the conditions for a higher quality of life. An extraordinary blend of science, music, and spirituality,
Sounds of Healing is an enlightening, inspiring guide to fostering inner harmony and tuning in to the music of our own souls.
Customer Reviews:
Dr. Gaynor Evidences His Own Growth and Acceptance.......2000-04-30
Healing Essence was highly touted and I purachased it; however, I had a feeling that it was missing something - or I was. Now with this book, Dr. Gaynor, like Chopra, seems to be finding the niche of his essence, and he give the reader the right to find their's. That is HEALING! As a nurse, it was amazing what a sachet of dried lavender attached to a pillow,& backrub would do, or a little music box I carried in my pocket to help neuro patients calm down. That was the 60s. This book shows the expanse of sound, and that one's body responds to that which it particularly needs. Having had chemo, the horrors of the traditional rows of chairs and people 'yapping,' vs what privacy and sound may have done for me brings tears. Just recently, with a new water 'garden,' I placed it in the living room - discomfort overcame me. It took a week to realize I wanted it in my office near to me. I do not work such long spells any longer. I integrate sounds, and relax! There are so many more options I've yet to try thanks to Dr. Gaynor. And, so many practices I'm going to try to change here in Austin, Texas!
Dr. Gaynor brings medicine out of the dark ages.......1999-07-30
Dr. Gaynor integrates sound and emotion as powerful tools in his medical arsenal leading his patients back to health. His use of the healing power of sound compliments the use of conventional medicine. Dr. Gaynor's guided meditations have helped achieve living miralces in "terminal" patients. This book reaffirms anything is possible when we discover what made us ill and how we can rebuild our lives during and after illness. This book is a priceless road map to self discovery and joy. I wish I could give it six stars.
a celestial journey.......1999-07-03
Sounds of Healing is an extraordinary publication. Like a journey within a journey, it is an odyssey along the path of spiritual wisdom, healing and self fulfillment. Like a compass, it directs as it informs-it encourages the reader to meander throughout its pages, enjoying the self direction and spontaneous discovery that are the essence of the spiritual quest. The book together with the Sounds of Healing compact disk moved me towards celestial realms that I have never before experienced.
A brilliant and beautiful book........1999-06-13
This is a brilliant and beautiful book superbly written with elegance and gracefulness. It is the most powerful and illuminating source of the role that sound can play in the healing process that I have ever read. Dr. Gaynor has an outstanding grasp of various sounds, techniques, and terms-the "grammatical" elements that make you fluent in the "language" of sound. But he goes far beyond that. He understands and transmits an unbelievable amount of expressive, historical, and even philosophical information. In keeping with that insight, he illuminates the varying circumstances and contexts that have shaped sound down thru the ages. He guides us thru the sounds that are capable of speaking to and from the human soul, and tells us something central about the human condition in each of us. This is a dazzling book which tells us not only about our distant past but also about how that past is able to shape our present and our future.

Book Description
A vivid memoir as well as a biography, this book details the adventures and mishaps of two students from the US who travel through a summer of rain in Nepal, interviewing Tibetans about traditional medicine. Through their journey, they learn about life in Nepal and Old Tibet, and of how traditional medicine stems from the Tibetan Buddhist world view. While grappling with problems their environment throws at them, they meet intriguing individuals who speak of their livessome more fantastic than othersand their experiences healing. The author's tone is personal and insightful as she records the stories of Tibetan doctors, patients, and shamans, watches and partakes in healings, and reflects on other aspects of living in Nepal.
Customer Reviews:
honest and captivating.......2003-02-21
There's a lot of variety in this book...the author had quite an adventure. It was fun learning about Tibetan medicine based on experiences instead of reading some dry textbook. Especially when it came to the shamans. And the stories of Tibetan refuges were so interesting... I'm recommending it to my friends.
honest and captivating.......2003-02-21
There's a lot of variety in this book. It's fun to read about the author's adventures in Nepal. I liked getting a feel for what life was like over there. And reading about Tibetan medicine from experiences instead of looking at some dry textbook. I especially liked learning about connections between Tibetan Buddhism and Tibetan medicine--the ways that the mind and spirit can affect one's health. The stories of the Tibetan elders she interviews are fascinating. A good balance of action and reflection...

Book Description
Elucidates the main aspects of Tibetan medicine and compares them to the Chinese system.
Book Description
At the core of this book lies the history of embryology and what it reveals about medicine and religion in Tibet. By linking aspects of Tibetan medicine to expressions of culture, religion, art, and literature, the book shows that writing on embryology descriptions on the development of the human body from conception to birth can be found in all forms of Tibetan religious literature, as well as in medical texts and in art.
The transformations of embryological narratives over several centuries illuminates key turning points in Tibetan medical history and its relationship with religious doctrine and practice. Embryology was a site for religious and medical theorists alike to contemplate profound questions of being and becoming, while topics such as pharmacology and nosology were left to shape the domain of secular medicine. As religion, stories of human development comment on embodiment, gender, sociopolitical hierarchy, religious ontology, and spiritual progress. Through the lens of embryology, this book examines how these concerns shift as Tibetan history moves through the formative 'renaissance' period of the twelfth through seventeenth centuries.

Book Description
On October 4, 1957, as Leave It to Beaver premiered on American television, the Soviet Union launched the space age. Sputnik, all of 184 pounds with only a radio transmitter inside its highly polished shell, became the first man-made object in space; while it immediately shocked the world, its long-term impact was even greater, for it profoundly changed the shape of the twentieth century.
In his upcoming book, Washington journalist Paul Dickson chronicles the dramatic events and developments leading up to and emanating from Sputnik's launch. Supported by groundbreaking, original research and many recently declassified documents, Sputnik offers a fascinating profile of the early American and Soviet space programs and a strikingly revised picture of the politics and personalities behind the facade of America's fledgling efforts to get into space.
Although Sputnik was unmanned, its story is intensely human. Sputnik owed its success to many people, from the earlier visionary, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, whose theories were ahead of their time, to the Soviet spokesmen strategically positioned around the world on the day the satellite was launched, who created one of the greatest public-relations events of all time. Its chief designer, however—the brilliant Sergei Korolev—remained a Soviet state secret until after his death.
Equally hidden from view was the political intrigue dominating America's early space program, as the military services jockeyed for control and identity in a peacetime world. For years, former Nazi Wernher von Braun, who ran the U.S. Army's missile program, lobbied incessantly that his Rocket Team should be handed responsibility for the first Earth-orbiting satellite. He was outraged that Sputnik beat him and America into space. For his part, President Eisenhower was secretly pleased that the Russians had launched first, because by orbiting over the United States Sputnik established the principle of "freedom of space" that could justify the spy satellites he thought essential to monitor Soviet missile buildup. As Dickson reveals, Eisenhower was, in fact, much more a master of the Sputnik crisis than he appeared to be at the time and in subsequent accounts.
The U.S. public reaction to Sputnik was monumental. In a single weekend, Americans were wrenched out of a mood of national smugness and post-war material comfort. Initial shock at and fear of the Soviets' intentions galvanized the country and swiftly prompted innovative developments that define our world today. Sputnik directly or indirectly influenced nearly every aspect of American life, from the demise of the suddenly superfluous tail fin and an immediate shift towards science in the classroom to the arms race that defined the cold war, the competition to reach the Moon, and the birth of the Internet.
By shedding new light on a pivotal era, Paul Dickson expands our knowledge of the world we now inhabit, and reminds us that the story of Sputnik goes far beyond technology and the beginning of the space age, and that its implications are still being felt today.
Customer Reviews:
Sputnik: Shock of the Century.......2007-10-03
Dickson's well-researched book masterfully pieces together the complex series of events leading up to the launch of Sputnik and those which followed in its aftermath. With earlier chapters devoted to the early history of rocket development, the book's content is largely centered on the late 1950's, especially 1957 and 1958; description of events outside of these years are presented in order tell the various stories to completion. But this is a book which has as its focal point, around which everything else revolves, one particular October evening fifty years ago. Written without hyperbole and in a style which is engaging, sometimes suspenseful, he tells the tale in the way of a great storyteller. Although abundant in facts and details, it reads smoothly and logically, tying in the factual details to the main themes, never turning dry or tedious. Sputnik: Shock of the Century covers the events, individuals, controversies and secrets surrounding the greatest technological and political event of its day. It would make excellent reading for anyone interested in space, history of science and technology, postwar political tensions, education, popular culture, and the environment of the United States in the 1950's. As we now pause to celebrate 50 years of manned and unmanned space exploration, heralded by that shiny, spherical Russian moon, this book makes for thoughtful reading as we look forward toward the next 50 years. Time very well spent.
A Fascinating Story, Well Told!.......2007-09-27
Growing up during the manned space program of mid 1960's, I missed the fears and excitement of the Cold War and the initial space race. Fifty years later, with teenage children who consider last week to be "old news," Paul Dickson's book "Sputnik: The Shock of the Century" is a great way both for me and my my children to have an understanding of what the world, and certainly this country, was like at that time.
The story isn't really about Sputnik, the satellite. It's about the times we lived in. It's about the revision and re-telling of history and dealing with the devil (von Braun) to get to where we collectively as a nation wanted to go, be it from a social, economic, political or military perspective.
"Sputnik: The Shock of the Century" is a good, fun read. The author has managed to succeed where all too many authors of technical or scientifically based subjects fail. He has written a book based on solid research and presented it in a way that readers, regardless of their levels of expertise or knowledge of the any aspect material, will be fully engaged and understand the "other side" of the story.
If you buy books on line, you should read this one.......2007-08-08
If you are buying books on the internet and reading reviews posted in cyberspace, this is a book you must read, because both the information technologies that enable you to read this review, and the culture that values such forms of expression, can be traced to events that followed the launch of Sputnik in October 1957. As Paul Dickson describes, Sputnik was "the shock of the century." It was an event which put processes in motion that have shaped our society for half a century.
America was a different place in 1957, preoccupied with returning to the cultural norms that had existed before the disruption of World War II and the rise of communism. Government was small and largely uninvolved in education, research, or social change. Public schools emphasized the "three Rs" and local values. Colleges and universities had swelled in size to meet the needs of WWII veterans, but remained largely focused on intellectual pursuits. Industry had turned its attention from building weapons, to meeting the seemingly insatiable demand for consumer products. The military was shrinking, confident that America had a commanding lead in technology, which could neutralize any threat from the larger military forces of communist nations.
All of that changed the night of October 22, 1957 when the Soviet Union shocked the world by launching Sputnik. It would be months before the United States could do the same.
Americans no longer felt secure. In response to the ascendancy of communist technologies, Congress rapidly put in place new programs that would ultimately transform American society. The Advanced Research Projects Administration (ARPA) was created to lead massive new initiatives in advanced technology, computing, and applied research. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was established to coordinate America's push into space. Hundreds of billions of dollars would be invested to build great research centers that would bring together military, industrial, and academic interests to assure America's technological supremacy. Also, Congress would also pass the National Defense Education Act (NDEA) to ensure that public schools produced an new generation of scientists and engineers.
The results were dramatic. In a little more than a decade, America would launch hundreds of satellites and win the race to the moon. America's universities, defense establishments, and commercial enterprises would invent microchips, computer networks, and new methods in chemistry, physics, and biology that would provide the foundation for an age of technology. Perhaps even more important, traditional education would be reformed to emphasize independent inquiry, invention, exploration, and expression and sow the seeds for the Age of Aquarius. Fifty years later, we live in a world of ubiquitous personal computers, the world wide web, MySpace, and YouTube, all of which can be traced directly to the ideas and initiatives that were a response to the "shock of the century."
How did all of this happen? That's what Paul Dickson describes what happened in a compelling, carefully researched, and readable of the events that transpired around the launch of Sputnik. Anyone reading this review or buying this book on line will readily understand how the events he describes continue to shape our world as we approach the 50th anniversary of Sputnik in October 2007.
Sputnik - Comes Alive.......2006-11-13
Takes all the hoopla of a childhood event and brings it to life. Reads like a companion book to a History or Discovery Channel show. Not only the historical facts but gives you the perspective of a multitude of characters from the era. If all history books were written with such lucidity and readability kids would eat up the subject.
Paul Dickson: Historian, Teacher, and Entertainer .......2006-11-13
Reading Paul Dickson's book Sputnik: The Shock of the Century has been a true delight. Making history accessible and entertaining to the public can be challenging, but Dickson has mastered both tasks. He presents his painstakingly researched information in a straightforward and engaging manner, complete with footnotes that often provide hilarious anecdotes or intriguing asides. I applaud his accomplishment and look forward to more.

Product Description
Presented for laymen, clerics, and the scientific community, an unprecedented (or actually quite "shocking") approach to Truth is developed whereby a reconciliation is attempted between ancient Wisdom Knowledge and modern empirical science. This has become possible because of such breakthroughs in today's quantum and astrophysical research that the paradigms of science are leaning from exoteric to esoteric. A unique added factor is that new Wisdom revelations have occurred in the past century and a half, which are added to the overall matrix of transcendent Knowledge. The method thus becomes one of comparing exoteric and esoteric cosmologies, resulting in what may be startling (or at least provocative) new concepts for the far fringe astrophysicists today who are thrusting beyond string theory to a staggering "multiverse" epiphany. All of which justifies the theme of Part II, On the Nature and Purpose of the Universe:" In all of our probing and theorizing and attempts to find the Archetype Unification, are we in effect trying to re-invent the wheel when the Answer has been with us all along?"
For the layman and cleric alike, the carefully graded extension of conceptuality through the text has the possibility of expanding consciousness to the point where faith and belief are exchanged for seeing and knowing.....

Book Description
Impact phenomena play an essential role in the formation of planets and great influence during their evolution. The first part of this book describes the dynamics that propels asteroids in our solar system; the second part is devoted to impact phenomena; the third inspects terrestrial impacts of asteroids and the hazards due to space debris orbiting our planet. The book addresses scientists working in astronomy, extraterrestrial physics and geophysics. But it should also be of great interest to a learned public that wants to know about the most recent developments in this fast-moving field of theoretical and observational research.

Book Description
Studies based on the Rankine-Hugoniot relations have classified MHO shock waves as fast, switch-on, intermediate, switch-off, and slow. Any waves found in nature must also: (a) possess steady-state structures and (b) be stable in the presence of small-flow disturbances. In this monograph, Dr. Anderson examines these criteria in relation to plane shocks for which the collision frequency is large compared with cyclotron frequency. It contains a three-dimensional graphic representation of shock end states and presents an exact solution for the shock adiabatic curve in a convenient form.

Book Description
This volume presents a unified theory of shock waves corresponding to gravitational and electromagnetic fields and to magnetohydrodynamics in the context of general relativity. The common tool employed is provided by tensor distribution -- an approach which has been systematically developed by the author since 1962. One remarkable result is that this yields a complete theory of magnetohydrodynamic shock waves, which can also be applied to the treatment of pulsars. The same method is also applicable to the quantization of some physical fields in curved space-time. This, too, is discussed in the book. For graduate students and researchers in mathematical physics and theoretical astrophysics.

Book Description
The 4th IGPP Astrophysics Conference proceedings discuss various aspects of collisionless shock physics in solar system plasmas, including: the microstructure of collisionless shocks, wave activities at and near shocks, particle acceleration at collisionless shocks and collisionless shocks in the outer heliosphere. This volume can serve both as a summary of the current understanding of collisionless shock physics and as a starting point for future research, especially for young scientists in this field.
