Book Description

From the same corral that produced the widely loved Horse Tradin’, Ben K. Green has rounded up fifteen new yarns filled with the ornery yet irresistible style that has earned his books a place in classic Western Americana.

Some More Horse Tradin’ recounts the dealings of a whole slew of craggy old-timers and rangy characters. See them match wits as they trade well-bred mares, snorty-like range colts, and used-to-be-bad horses from the tumbleweed plains. Admire the old-time knavery, skill, and salesmanship in such tales as “Gittin’ Even,” “Brethren Horse Traders,” “Mule Schoolin’,” and “Water Treatment and the Sore-Tailed Bronc.” Ride along with Green, and he’ll tell you what he knows about horseflesh--but keep your wits about you, and hang on to your wallet.

I loved the book. Ben Green gives a wonderful peek into an era gone by. He uses the lingo of the day and the stories are wonderful to anyone interested in horses and days when there were more horses than cars.

5 out of 5 stars Ozark Gal.......2007-01-31

This is such a fun book to read that it is hard to put down. The reader learns so many "tricks" of horse trading through Ben Greens stories. It is so enjoyable you will want to buy his other books also.

4 out of 5 stars Some More Horse Tradin'.......2000-09-25

This was an excellent book. I greatly enjoyed each and every adventure that Ben K. Green takes you through in the book. In a time where everything is done the easy way it is great to be able to look back and see how things realy used to be done. Through this book you are able to get a very clear picture of the old west. I loved reading about all the different ways the horse traders thought of to skam each other and somehow they both thought they were getting a good deal. I thought this book was great and was not able to put it down once I picked it up. I can't wait to read more by Ben K. Green.

      Book Description

Our understanding of galaxies has advanced significantly in recent years. Powerful computer simulations and detailed observations from ground- and space-based telescopes have been instrumental in this. This graduate textbook provides students with a complete, accessible introduction to modern galactic dynamics. The first two parts of the book define the astrophysical problems and the methods for building sound physical models. Next, coverage examines the observational properties and models of spiral then elliptical galaxies. A selection of exciting topics from contemporary research are also reviewed, including the formation and evolution of galaxies, cooling flows, accretion disks, and galaxies at high redshift. Throughout, the volume helps students develop a clear understanding and good physical intuition of the processes involved. Full derivations are provided for key results and helpful problems are included.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent review of galactic structure and dynamics.......2000-10-05

It is a difficult but inspiring book written by one of the leading world experts who, in spite of the relatively young age, has obtained an impressive record of new results in the field of galaxy dynamics. If compared to the standard reference in the field (Galactic Dynamics by Binney and Tremaine), the book stands out for conciseness, clarity and homogeneity of treatment. Bertin, in fact, puts emphasis on physics rather than phenomenology and succeeds in compressing the huge field of galaxy dynamics in a relatively short book structured in few chapters. Each chapter is focused on a different physical mechanisms which is then used to gain deeper and deeper insights into the structure of the stellar systems. The book is up to date and provides the reader with an exhaustive list of references. An excellent book to be recommended to graduate students as well as to researchers active in the field

      Book Description

Two of the world's leading astrophysicists, James Binney and Scott Tremaine, here present a comprehensive review of the theory of galactic dynamics at a level suitable for both graduate students and researchers. Their work in this volume describes our present understanding of the structure and dynamics of stellar systems such as galaxies and star clusters.

Nicknamed "the Bible of galactic dynamics," this book has become a classic treatise, well known and widely used by researchers and students of galactic astrophysics and stellar dynamics. Praised for its modern approach, as well as for the rigor and exemplary clarity with which the authors handle the material in this book, Galactic Dynamics includes classic results and data while also reflecting the many recent developments in the field. The authors maintain an effective style of exposition throughout, keeping clear what is present knowledge and what is still speculation, while allowing the reader to grasp an overview of the subject before following through (where needed) with the mathematical detail. Most of the astronomical community since the late 1980s was introduced to galactic dynamics through Galactic Dynamics, and it remains the most widely used graduate textbook in galactic astrophysics today. No other book gathers together and presents our current understanding of the field in such a clear and concise way. Through this approach, Binney and Tremaine succeeded in creating a classic reference of enormous pedagogic value.

Not for the faint of heart. Well written, but very technical. Needs good math and physics background.

5 out of 5 stars THE Definitive Work on Galaxies.......2006-12-28

Binney has cleary established Galactic Dynamics and its companion volume Galactic Astronomy as the definitive works on the subject. The NASA Astronomy Abstract Service lists 3411 citations for this book as of 12/2006 so it is clearly an important part of the literature of astrophysics.

This book is written at the graduate or researcher level. As it deals with the behavior of galaxies, potential theory, energy distribution, angular momentium and dark matter so the mathematics employed are quite powerful.

        Product Description

This book contains an up-to-date review of the structure and evolution of disk galaxies from both the observational and theoretical point of view. The book is the proceedings of the ""Island Universes"" conference held at the island of Terschelling, The Netherlands in July 2005, which attracted about 130 experts and students in the field. The conference was organized as a tribute to Dr. Piet C. van der Kruit for receiving the honorary Jacobus C. Kapteyn Professorship in Astronomy. The eight topical themes discussed at the meeting are reflected in these proceedings: 1) Properties of Stellar Disks, 2) Kinematics and Dynamics of Disk Galaxies, 3) Bars, Spiral Structure, and Secular Evolution in Disk Galaxies, 4) The Outskirts and Environment of Disk Galaxies, 5) Interstellar Matter, 6) (Evolution of) Star Formation in Galactic Disks, 7) Disk Galaxies through Cosmic Time, and 8) Formation Models of Disk Galaxies. These proceedings are concluded with a conference summary reflecting on the most significant recent progress and outstanding problems. This volume is unique in that it brings together such a broad range of aspects of disk galaxies: structure and dynamics, the latest multi-wavelength surveys, low- and high redshift observations, theory and observations. This book is addressed to professional astronomers and their students.

          Book Description

This volume of proceedings contains research and review papers concerning the dynamics of asteroids and comets and especially their interactions with the Earth as signified by geological and historical records. Remembering what may have happened to the dinosaurs, but being careful to avoid creating irrational scares, the papers attempt to improve our knowledge of dynamics of the small objects of the Solar System and to assess in particular their effects on the Earth environment and the evolution of life.
This book will be an up-to-date source of information to astronomers and dynamicists interested in the dynamics of small bodies of the Solar system, as well as to geologists and paleobiologists interested in the effects on the Earth of extraterrestrial bombardment by asteroids and comets.

Length and mass are measurements we understand intuitively, but temperature is fleeting and elusive. Why is it so hard to measure compared with other fundamentals? Why do living things require such a narrow range of temperatures to go about their business? How cold is deep space, anyway? Physicist Gino Segre knows how to keep interest flowing along; even when he's explaining the intricacies of small-scale physics, he takes time to ground it in real life. His scope is wide--from the beginning (and ending) of the universe to the history of life on Earth, little falls outside his purview. Yet the book touches on so many subjects of immediate interest to 21st-century humans (high fevers, sports medicine, and the next scheduled Ice Age, to name a few) that it's compelling even to those who don't care about the Big Questions. --Rob Lightner

          Book Description

In a wonderful synthesis of science, history, and imagination, Gino Segrè, an internationally renowned theoretical physicist, embarks on a wide-ranging exploration of how the fundamental scientific concept of temperature is bound up with the very essence of both life and matter. Why is the internal temperature of most mammals fixed near 98.6š? How do geologists use temperature to track the history of our planet? Why is the quest for absolute zero and its quantum mechanical significance the key to understanding superconductivity? And what can we learn from neutrinos, the subatomic "messages from the sun" that may hold the key to understanding the birth-and death-of our solar system? In answering these and hundreds of other temperature-sensitive questions, Segrè presents an uncanny view of the world around us.

5 out of 5 stars temperature explained.. and the effects it has.......2006-06-16

As someone who barely made it through thermodynamics at the U getting a title of mechanical engineer, I'm glad of reading this wonderful book. It puts you in a special perspective about how this property relates to our earth and our living world.

be prepared to take a grand tour. Temperature is a property of mater and as suchm reveals what is happing to an active systems such as the earth. Science is all about connections; at least to me, thats where the beauty comes in. To be able to connect atmospheric events, form geology, to living systems, wisdom resides on how you can weave the threads that are loose

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating and lucid book!.......2006-04-09

For me this was an excellent book and recommend it to everyone interested in always learning new things. Segre's easy way of explaining tough matters is admirable. In this book you learn lots of stuff, like the average internal temperature of humans, earth temperature, what is absolute zero and quantum dynamics, all of them sauced with lots of history.

4 out of 5 stars A Journey From the Discovery of Aspirin to Hydrothermal Vents.......2006-02-16

An entertaining read about the discovery and history of temperature. Along with the usual suspects like Galileo, Copernicus, Newton and others, you are also introduced to many other somewhat less heralded scientific figures that have made great contributions to science. Some of the more interesting sections of the book were, the discovery of aspirin, invention of the thermometer, hydrothermal vents, to temperature shift extinctions. Overall, a very quick read with lasting anecdotal impressions. Why read this book? To quote Steven Weinberg "The effort to understand the universe is one of the very few things that lifts human life above the level of farce, and gives it some of the grace of tragedy". This book opens new insights into and of the world we live in.

3 out of 5 stars Science for the curious.......2006-01-05

This book is a fantastic read for any of us who has gone through their science courses in school and wondered if there is more to science than the cut and dry information they got from their BORING(!!!!)textbooks.

Who would have ever thought that such a prestigious family of physicists who can pride themselves of a Nobel prize trace back to a enterprising grand-father who built a paper mill on top of Roman temple in Italy?

Science is indeed a human story.

2 out of 5 stars 2 stars for usefulness, 4 stars for interesting tidbits.......2005-12-10

I read this book after reading John Gribbin's "Deep Simplicity" and "Ice Age". If I hadn't read Gribbin's books I would not have been able to put some of Segre's political bias into context, and filter the good information from the scientific facts. Gribbin writes in a much clearer style and without the blantant political overtones.

          Book Description

Lyman Spitzer, Jr., is a leading astronomer whose work has revolutionized our understanding of interstellar space and plasma physics. In addition, his proposals for a large telescope in space led after many decades to the Hubble Space Telescope. Dreams, Stars, and Electrons contains some thirty of his papers, selected mainly for their relevance to present research. Some of these works have previously not been readily available. A commentary by the author, preceding each paper, gives interesting background information and summarizes some more recent work. Part I of the book is devoted to twelve papers on the gas and dust in interstellar space, beginning with the author's theory (now accepted fact) that this interstellar material in spiral galaxies is the birthplace of young stars. The final interstellar paper summarizes the extensive results obtained by the Princeton/NASA Copernicus satellite. In Part II eight papers discuss problems of stellar dynamics, including systematic acceleration of stars in random passage near interstellar clouds. Other papers analyze the evolution of a spherical cluster in the absence of external perturbations. Part III deals primarily with the early development and present performance of the Hubble telescope; and Part IV, with plasma physics, including controlled fusion. More personal writings are included in Part V. Lyman Spitzer, Jr., is Professor Emeritus of Astronomy at Princeton University and was Director of the Princeton University Observatory for some thirtyfive years. Jeremiah P. Ostriker is Charles A. Young Professor of Astronomy and is Provost of Princeton University.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A very readable collection of papers.......2004-10-08

Lyman Spitzer was the author of several interesting books, including "The Physics of Fully Ionized Gases," "Physical Processes in the Interstellar Medium," and "Dynamical Evolution of Globular Clusters." This volume is a collection of Spitzer's best papers, written with wonderful clarity, and it covers all of these topics, as well as a paper on the physics of sound in the sea. In addition, there are a couple of papers about space telescopes, including his pioneering work on the subject from 1946. The Spitzer Space Telescope, an infrared observatory that was launched in 2003, was named for him.

I sincerely recommend this book for anyone interested in space physics or galactic astronomy.

                Book Description

This thoroughly revised textbook is a basic introduction to plasma phenomena in solar and stellar coronae emphasizing non-MHD aspects. The natural way in which the author unifies observations and theory gives a wide perspective to the subject. An important feature is the lucidly written presentation of the fundamentals of plasma physics. The basic theory thus developed is then extended to some exemplary and important observations of coronal dynamics, such as coronal currents, particle acceleration, propagation of particle beams, and shocks.

The book has grown from teaching introductory courses on plasma astrophysics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH). It addresses advanced undergraduates and first-year graduate students without a background in plasma physics. It will also be of interest to more senior research workers involved in coronal physics of the Sun and other stars, solar/stellar winds, and various other fields of plasma astrophysics.
