      Product Description

With the recent republication of Dr. Maynard Murray's Sea Energy Agriculture, readers rediscovered the forgotten legacy of an eco-ag pioneer. Murray's idea -- that ocean water contains a concentrated, perfect balance of trace minerals in bioavailable form -- seems almost as revolutionary today as when he introduced it three decades ago. In this fascinating book, Charles Walters examines Murray's career and the amazing successes that growers have experienced with his methods, as well as further developments in this technology by creative experimenters. Using hard data obtained in the field, Walters demonstrates that sea-solids fertilizers produce stress-resistant plants and food with naturally extended shelf life and vastly increased nurtient levels. Both an amazing narrative and a practical guide for improving soil and crop health, Fertility from the Ocean Deep is a must-read for everyone interested in the cutting edge of sustainable agriculture.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating explanation of the missing mineral link.......2007-09-27

This book is not only a well written account of the live's of Dr. Maynard Murray and Rene Quinton who discovered the nutritional properties of sea water and their miraculous effects on agriculture, livestock and the human body. it explains how many of today's maladies have been solved with dietary supplementation of "ocean plasma" or a diluted isotonic solution of sea water. it shows how farmers have benefited from adding a diluted small amount of sea salt to their crops and how their yields have increased. It shows how livestock are sensitive to the mineral composition of the soil and how they will migrate to a field that has been treated as opposed to one that has not.

Table salt has two main ones Sodium Chloride. Sea salt has 92 different trace minerals. This book is a must for the farmer, the rancher and those interested in health. It is one of my greatest finds

      Book Description

In this book, eco-agriculture is explained — from the tiniest molecular building blocks to managing the soil — in terminology that not only makes the subject easy to learn, but vibrantly alive. Eco-Farm truly delivers a complete education in soils, crops, and weed and insect control.

Chapters provide detailed discussions of trace elements, tillage, the N,P&K concept, animal health, crops, soil carbon and calcium, insects, soil life, crop rotation, and much more.

This should be the first book read by everyone beginning in eco-agriculture . . . and the most shop-worn book on the shelf of the most experienced.

I left college full of scientific knowledge and spent thirty years amending that with experience. Though I cannot subscribe to Steiner's Bio-dynamics I do follow sustainable farming techniques - those thirty years have taught me something. In this primer, that has been distilled and laid out clearly and without preaching as many "eco" texts do.

An excellent essay on conservative farming, blending the agro-science with eco-science.

      5 out of 5 stars Eco-Farm.......2006-08-09

If only every person that ever eats food read this book as a set work at school, the level of intelligence across the literate world would double. No longer would advertising companies have such a gullible audience. No longer would the medical and medical insurance industry have such a ready customer base.
And most of all, the customer of the farmer/producer would not tolerate the practices in industrial agriculture, and in turn, small farmers would not be trying to ape their "big brothers"

5 out of 5 stars Rough but Ready.......2006-06-05

I agree with the previous reviewer - that Charles Walters is a bit condescending, but we allow this to genius in any other discipline. The book is billed as "the definitive guide to managing farm and ranch soil fertility etc..." But this book is not a technician's handbook about farming, it is a primer for a massive paradigm shift in the way we look at the entire eco-sphere, about our estrangement from the soil from which we derive our "permission for life" - and about a milieu of degenerative disease which necessarily flows from such a tragic estrangement.

Part of Walter's arrogance is really just conviction. It is the utter conviction of a Socrates or a Copernicus or an Einstein, who will brook no humility about truth. A sociopath does not a prophet make, but a true prophet will always be marginalized as one by the sociological institution from which he speaks. And this is because institutional science, "tries to harmonize the latest discoveries with the incongruities of its false position."

Paradigm shift is not fun. It is adventurous, but painful. No one looks for the painful adventure until the pain of institutional inertia becomes unbearable. Walters himself proposes a paradigm shift of such massive proportions that it quite exceeds his own modest proposals. Unless our agronomy exceeds the righteousness of the "environmental movement" we will never see symbiosis in our generation.

5 out of 5 stars The best source on caring for the soil I have ever read!.......1997-07-18

Even though the beginning of the book has a slightly arrogant writing style, it is the best book on sustainable agriculture I have ever read. It is filled with the science behind the claims that, although complex, is easy to understand. It will make converts of even the most chemically dependent gardener or farmer if they have an open mind going in. It truely is THE organic primer Bible

          Book Description

Soil Fertility Evaluation and Control presents the theoretical background for practical applications of scientific work on soil fertility. The book emphasizes the use of response curves as the basic biological standard for both evaluation and control, and it discusses soil testing and plant analysis as secondary standards. The principal applications covered include fertilizer requirements, fertilizer evaluation, residual effects, fertilizer placement, liming, and economics of fertilization. Environmental aspects of plant nutrients and soil nutrient supplies as they pertain to crop production are also addressed. Most of the information in Soil Fertility Evaluation and Control is drawn from world literature, which makes it a valuable reference for soil scientists, agronomists, agriculturalists, foresters, and others interested in the evaluation and control of soil fertility.

In my opinion, this book is an outstanding work on Soil Fertility because of its extensive revision on the pertinent literature. The professor C. A. Black came out with a brilliant book wich covers this issue in completely different way. This book is indispensable to researchers in soil fertility and plant nutrition.

                Book Description

The Ulysses observations have charted the heliosphere around the minimum in the 11 year cycle of solar activity, revealing the large scale properties of the heliospheric medium and its micro-scale characteristics. This book presents for the first time, a comprehensive review of the results of the Ulysses mission.
The first chapter provides an overview of the region, introducing the heliosphere prior to the Ulysses mission, and the objectives and characteristics of the mission itself. Subsequent chapters discuss in detail specific areas of the heliosphere, including the solar wind, large and small scale features, cosmic rays and energetic particles, and the observations of interstellar gas and cosmic dust. Each of these chapters is written by members of the Ulysses science team, concentrating on their own areas of expertise, and is written in a clear and accessible way.
In this book, the authors aim to summarise our understanding of the heliosphere near solar minimum and to provide the basis for understanding the more complex state of the heliosphere around solar maximum, which will be observed during the next phase of the Ulysses mission.

Dynamo theory is the study of the generation and maintenance of magnetic fields by fluid motion. It is important in many areas of physics, ranging from stellar and galactic dynamics, through solar physics and geomagnetism to reactor physics. This volume is the only modern introduction to the subject, and is comprised of the lectures given by leading specialists for an intensive course held at the Newton Institute in Cambridge, U.K. as part of a NATO Advanced Study Institute. Topics covered include planetary and solar dynamos, fast dynamos, and the use of symmetry principles to derive evolution equations. Each chapter starts with background material and goes right up to the forefront of current research. Detailed bibliographies are provided. This book will be welcome reading for graduate students in planetary and solar physics, plasma physics, and astrophysics.

5 out of 5 stars Great Vintage Science Book for Children.......2007-06-25

I like this book for it's beautiful illustrations and the simplicity of explanations. It also has some interesting inaccuracies which would make it perhaps add to it's collectibility. THIS BOOK WAS WRITTEN PRIOR TO MAN LANDING ON THE MOON. Pages 22-23 have an illustration of men in space suits holding long ice picks and leaping on some mountains on the moon. In the background is a red rocket ship which has landed on the moon. The caption states, "The first explorers will find the moon a vst desert, with lofty mountains and big craters dotting the dusty plains. The Moon's weak gravity will allow the explorers to move in great leaps."

The chapter on MARS: PLANET OF MYSTERY, is interesting as well:
Page 27 explains, "Mars has no rivers, no oceans, or lakes. But it has a tilt like Earth's and therefore has seasons. When it is winter in one hemisphere, ice or snw covers the area around the pole. This polar cap is probably less than a foot deep, but it contains nearly all the water on the planet! In spring, the ice cap begins to melt. Through the telescopes, we see the dark greenish patches appear along the edges of the cap. These are perhaps areas covered by green moses--the only life believed to exist on the planet...As autum comes, the greenish areas turn brown. As winter sets in, winds carry the water back to the pole, and there it freezes again."

The next chapter covers "MEN OF MARS" It discusses how people thought the canals seen on mars must be irrigation ditches to lead water from the melting snow caps to the farmers fields..."But few astronomers take these ideas seriously...In 1956 Mars came closer to earth than it had come in many years. Astronomers all over the world watched it through telesopes, photographed it, and studied its light with spectroscopes. STILL THEY FOUND NO SURE SIGN THAT THERE IS ANY LIFE ON MARS EXCEPT FOR LOWLY MOSSES...But even if there are no people on Mars, we can look forward to the day when Earth men may explore it."

I think this book is a great collectors piece to contrast our view of the solar system in the 1950's vs now, and how far we have come. It is also lovely for its beautiful illustrations.

                      What a great fun-to-read book!!!

                              Description:
An integrated dust storm modeling system is developed for the prediction of dust storms. The system couples a wind erosion scheme, a dust transportation model and the Penn State/UCAR modeling system (MM5) with a geographic information database. The system can be used for the prediction of dust emission rate and dust concentration associated with individual dust storm events. Two severe dust storm events occurred in spring 2002, one on the 19th-22nd of March and the other on the 6th-9th of April. The integrated modeling system is used to simulate the two events. The numerical results are compared with surface weather records and satellite images and good agreement is found between the model results and observation in dust concentration distribution and evolutions. The Gobi Desert in southern Mongolia and the Badain Jaran Desert, Tengger Desert and Hunshandake sandy land in Inner Mongolia (China) are identified to be the dust sources for the two events. The dominant modes of dust particles over western Inner Mongolia and Mongolia are from 2 to 11 @mm in size, and 2 to 22 @mm over Beijing and its surrounding area. The emission of particles in the 2-11 @mm size range is found to be most important for Northeast Asian dust storms.
