      Book Description

Thoroughly updated and re-conceived, Astronomy, Ninth Edition, equips the introductory astronomy student with the essential tools for understanding the cosmos. Michael Zeilik has revised the pedagogy of his successful textbook based on recent research in astronomy education. Significantly shorter than the previous edition, the ninth edition is organized into four concept clusters: Cosmic Distances, Heavenly Motions, Celestial Light and Spectra, and Scientific Models. Material has been streamlined throughout to make the descriptions, concepts, and explanations clearer. Each chapter ends with a concise summary of the concepts in each cluster. Each chapter contains at least one Celestial Navigator, a concept map that provides a visual guide of major concepts in the chapter and explicity shows their connections. Throughout, illustrations have been updated to be clearer and more understandable to the novice student. Michael Zeilik, Professor of Physics and Astronomy and former Presidential Lecturer at the University of New Mexico, specializes in innovative, introductory courses for the novice, non-science major student. In 1998, he was appointed a Research Fellow at the National Institute of Science Education. Zeilik's work has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, NASA, the Exxon Educational Foundation, and the Slipher Fund of the National Academy of Sciences. In 1997, the 8th edition of Astronomy: The Evolving Universe won a Texty Award from the Text and Academic Authors Association. In 2002 he was awarded the Astronomy Education Prize by the American Astronomical Society.

5 out of 5 stars Starry, starry night..........2004-05-23

Zeilik's book is one of the earliest systematic astronomy texts I ever read, beginning with the third edition back in 1982. That edition had four primary sections - Part I: Changing Concepts of the Cosmos; Part II: The Planets, Past and Present; Part III: The Universe of Stars and Galaxies; and Part IV: Cosmic Evolution.

Part I looks at the general structure of the universe, how it was conceived in the past, and how it is viewed today. Much of what is covered here falls under the general heading of cosmology. Zeilik has an interest in the history of astronomy, and it shows clearly in the text. He explores, among other topics, the Anasazi prehistoric astronomy discoveries, the Ptolemaic geocentric model, Tycho Brahe/Kepler's achievements, the discoveries of Newton and Galileo, and finally the birth of modern astrophysics. Some basic physics is introduced along the way, to make sense of radiation and optics, as well as gravitation and space-time concepts.

Part II looks at the nine planets of our solar system, including their satellites (moons), and the asteroids and other solar system objects (comets, etc.). Planetary sciences are among the fastest developing sciences around, so a lot of the information contained here is basic, and some updating is required. There is no mistake that the most current version of this text is now in its ninth edition. The final chapter in this subject looks at some of the theories of the origin and development of the solar system.

Part III looks at the universe beyond the planets, looking first at the sun as a typical small star, and then going further afield to look at the Milky Way, our local galaxy in some detail. This includes a look at other major formations and stars within the galaxy - some named stars of interest as well as celestial objects such as nebulae, and a discussion of interstellar distances and distribution (Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, etc.). The structure, kinematics and dynamics of spiral galaxies are explored, and then other types of galaxies (elliptical, etc.) and galactic clusters.

The final section, Part IV, looks at general evolution and development of the universe. Stellar evolution is the first subject, as one of the primary vehicles of universal development. The different ways in which a star dies are explored - white dwarves, neutron stars, supernovae, black holes, pulsars. The larger ideas of the origins and ultimate fate of the universe (cosmology again, at the end) are explored, including a brief discussion of the origins of life in the universe, and short discussions on topics such as SETI (called CETI here, Communication with ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence).

One of the useful aspects of this text is the 'Beyond the Book' sections after each chapter. These include information about periodicals (often the best way to find the latest information on astronomy topics), additional books and other resources. There are learning objectives listed at the beginning of each chapter, and convenient summaries, and some short exercises at the end of each chapter also.

There are several useful appendices, including lists of stars, planetary data, periodic table, and other such information. A very good glossary and index round out the book, making it an excellent text book for both classroom and independent use.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for all.......2000-05-06

If you were ever interested in what is going on above in heavens, but didn't want to trouble yourself with too much equations and other non-esential stuff, then this is the book for you. It is a textbook, and it reads as a textbook. You'll find that everything is included: from our Solar system, to the nuclear processes in the stars, to the black holes. Descriptions are as they should be for the non-pros: comprehensive and simple (yet not trivial), well presented (love those many color pictures) and to the point. Great for an occasional star-gazer as well as astronomy students to revise their knowledge. And the Night Spectra Quest is a neat beginner's tool to examining star spectra. If you get more interested after studying this book, I recommend "An Introduction to Modern Astrophysics", which goes more deeply into the study of astrophysics and cosmology.

In God and the Evolving Universe three spiritual visionaries--authors James Redfield and Michael Murphy, and filmmaker Sylvia Timbers--join together to offer a hopeful prophecy. Their basic premise is that we have reached an exciting point in history where human evolution and planetary evolution are about to collide, creating an entirely new and spiritually enlightened world. On the human track, the authors claim we have been working toward this era of enlightenment for some time. They point to the emergence of extraordinary human capabilities, such as clairvoyants and even amazing athletic feats that incorporate an altered state of consciousness. (They site baseball slugger Mark McGwire's mind-altering visualization techniques before a game.) The authors also offer stories and events that suggest an increase in love and spiritual growth around the world. Redfield gave us The Celestine Prophecy, a bestseller that was faulted for being too simplistic. While the writing in God and the Evolving Universe is not simplistic, it sometimes falters into metaphysical black holes and psycho-spiritual labyrinths. Yet the message is inspirational: We're on the right path and good things are ahead. And God knows, the world could use more of these positive visions. --Gail Hudson

      Book Description

In a world racked by violence and conflict, James Redfield and Michael Murphy-leading cocreators of today's spiritual boom-present a message of hope and a vision for the future.

It is no accident, they argue, that the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries have witnessed a revolution in new human capacities. Daily we hear and read about supernormal athletic feats; clairvoyant perception; lives transformed by meditative practices; healing through prayer-and we ourselves experience these things.

The authors contend that thousands of years of human striving have delivered us to this very moment, in which each act of self-development is creating a new stage in planetary evolution-and the emergence of a human species possessed of vastly expanded potential.

2 out of 5 stars Gentle and simplistic.......2004-11-06

While the topic and content of this book seems interesting at
first, the authors have presented the material in such a simple
way that it looks like if human evolution was so obvious and
linear. Most of the examples and works that support the viewpoint
of the authors seem to me quite ok, but the authors probably did
not read them thoroughly because they left much of their depth
untouched. What this book provides is merely inconsistent and
unexplained information about aspects of humanity that are better
discussed elsewhere. So the value of reading this book might be
to get you frustrated and make you go to the references of the
book, to get the original sources of the material of the book in
their full depth. But at least reading it from cover to cover
will not cost you much intellectual effort...

1 out of 5 stars Neocon New Ageism - Puritan rewrite of human history.......2003-12-04

The Chapter "History of Human Awakening" includes mention of nearly every philosopher from Buddha onward. There are Plato, Freud, Jung, Rank and even an account of UFOs, ghost and poltergeiests.

But, in the fantasy world of Redfield and Murphy, no human being ever ingested any substance for the purpose of understanding consciousness. Therefore, Louis Lewin, Aldous Huxley, Carlos Casteneda. Ram Dass and certainly Timothy Leary never existed. The psychedelic sixties never happened, according to Redfield and Murphy.

This book tries to pass off neo-Puritanism as scholarship. Like much current thought, it is in complete denial of human history and human nature. This book is of interest as a striking example of drug war media control. How you talk about spirituality in the past half-century without a mention of entheogens, which drove the greatest spiritual awakening since the Transcendental 1840s?

This is a very strange denial pattern for authors who come from those Esalen days back in the sixties when stuff happened they apparently don't want to remember. There is no credibility for authors who can't present a complete and accurate account of their own history, let alone any pretense of covering "Human Evolution."

If they want to move people beyond drugs, then they need to start with some kind of truth about history. But no, there is not a single mention of any drug in their survey of "evolution," even when they report on Hinduism, Sufism, Taoism and other entheogen-using religions.

This phony and pretentious book isn't about an "Evolving Universe." It's about drug war politics and 12-step ideology. All it really has to say is "Just Say No."

3 out of 5 stars Good information, needs more unity to the themes.......2003-02-25

Excellent book overall, but I had to give it only 3 stars because it doesn't read like a good story as his first book (Celestine Prophecy) did. I think he is headed in the right direction with the philosophy here, but the book is not Earth-shaking in it's implications like other books I have read in a similar vein (such as "The Textbook of the Universe: The Genetic Ascent to God" which truly changed my world view forever...). Overall good stuff and interesting to read.

      1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2002-05-15

The annotated bibliography in this book is of some value. However, a significant omission in my opinion is "Human Destiny" by Lecomte du Nouy (Longmans, Green and Co., 1947).

It is not at all apparent that the authors have studied carefully all of the writings listed in the bibliography. References on various pages to Alan Watts, G.W.F. Hegel, and others cause one to wonder... The use of footnotes would have added authenticity and credibility to this book.

The authors deal fleetingly with so many themes and ideas that the book takes on the nature of a hodge podge. This is regrettable since the ideas touched on have the potential for logical development into a compelling theme.

Finally, it does not help that so much of the writing is gobble de gook - words and phrases thrown together in relatively meaningless ways. It's as if the authors were trying to dazzle the reader with fancy footwork (or fancy wordwork).

The title for my review is "Disappointing." In retrospect, I believe I should have selected "Highly Disappointing."

      5 out of 5 stars A Call to Transformation.......2003-03-06

Mary Conrow Coelho, Awakening Universe, Emerging Personhood: The Power of Contemplation in an Evolving Universe (Wyndham Hall 2002)

Mary Coelho has done a great deed for the universe. Awakening Universe Emerging Personhood is a gift to all who seek to understand the transformation of human consciousness occurring today. With a solid grounding in the latest scientific understandings of the natural world in its cosmic context, a thorough knowledge of philosophy and religion, and a transparent telling of her own story using the insights of psychology, Coelho sets forth the basis for a new paradigm of human action. She shows the deep connections of the Western contemplative tradition to the insights of quantum physics and cosmology in a compelling way.

This book is a work of significant scholarship that brings materials from diverse disciplines together in a coherent story. Practically every page contains fresh insights into the nature of humans as totally at one with the universe while totally unique. Divisions between God and humanity, the environment and humans, religion and science no longer appear relevant in a universe that expresses itself in many different forms while maintaining its unity.

Coelho has created a guidebook that illuminates a path to enlightenment in a time when we face critical choices about our future. We can continue along the path of division, defining our enemies, asserting our arrogance and acting in ways that betray our ignorance and destroy our home and its inhabitants. Or we can choose a contemplative life that leads to acts of liberation for ourselves and others, a transformation of our story and our world:

"By becoming conscious of our full identity we find it highly possible to choose ways of transforming our relationships with the earth and all its peoples, with our close human and other than human companions, and with the institutions that govern and teach about these relationships." (p. 378)

Coelhoýs book reads easily but is not easy reading. It is a call to grapple with the deepest insights of Western contemplatives and the challenges of the natural sciences and to examine the persistent patterns of our own lives. Those who heed this call will be richly rewarded.

          Book Description

Chaos is part of a broad scientific revolution that is uncovering the role of interdependence in shaping the world at all levels from the molecular to the societal. But this science is part of a yet larger cultural revolution, the emergence of a vision of the world as a deeply interdependent evolving ecology. In this powerful book, Sally Goerner strives to make the broader revolution, science and sociology, understandable. She provides a concrete and coherent picture of the science from chaos and self-organization theory to Gaia and the New Biology and then ties it to visions of ecology and evolution in the broader human realm. The result is a breathtaking birds-eye view of a new and profound form of ecological thinking emerging at once from the head and heart of our culture.

This book was a challenge and a delight to read. So many current ideas challenging thinkers the world over, and emerging across sectors and disciplines, were placed in context and explained in memorable ways. More important, the book was as inspiring to the reader as the author seemed inspired by her explorations that led to the book. Bravo! It ought to be necessary reading for those responsible for leading people from this milenium into the next, and all others who want to appreciate their place in history at this particular moment in time...Sally Goerner illuminates human thought and the greater creative universe on all sides, with balance. 5 out of 5 stars A masterful description of time and space.......2007-04-09

Govert Schilling (with an excellent translation into English by David Wray) has managed to explain the entire history of the Universe in some 127 pages and in a most beautiful and poetic way (reminiscent of Carl Sagan). The breadth of his coverage is only matched by his eloquent description which is sure to touch the hearts of scientist and layman alike. With such a vast coverage, he, of course, cannot go into the intricate details of each subject but yet he manages to capture the essence of each topic and hardly misses any important topic that relates to the subject at hand. From the first quantum of time after the Big Bang (just 1 x 10^-43 seconds after) to the end of the Universe in a whimper some 10^100 years later, he describes the important milestones of cosmic evolution - the creation of matter, the first atoms, the separation of the four fundamental forces, the cosmic dark ages, the age of recombination, the first stars and subsequent generations of stars, supernovae, black holes, the synthesis of the heavy elements, the first galaxies, the formation of solar systems, the evolution of life, the ultimate end of human life and of the Sun and Earth, and finally the slow death of the universe itself! Not much is left out. An astonishing number of details are presented in a non mathematical way but yet the poetic beauty of his descriptions fills your mind with pictures that unfold with every page. Speaking of pictures, the book is filled with beautiful color astronomical pictures and paintings on almost every page as well but believe me, the words alone are enough to touch your very soul. If every there was an answer to the age old question, "What is the meaning of life?" - this is it!

            Book Description

This student supplement to Astronomy: The Evolving Universe provides thirty-two hands-on activities for students of astronomy. Highly focused on central concepts in astronomy, each activity is linked to a section of the main text. The activities are designed to take 30 or 40 minutes of class time, and most require no special materials or extra resources. These class-tested activities form a key part of the innovative teaching strategies developed by Michael Zeilik.
