The Pathology Bible.......2007-09-13
I am using this book for my medical school pathology class and it is a life saver. It has great images and detailed text that makes it a crucial learning guide. The authors really put time into making sure the concepts were well exlpored and explained. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be a master of pathology!
I can read it without falling asleep!.......2007-09-02
For a textbook about pathology, or any science text book, this is incredible!
It is very thorough and well written, but most importantly, it is readable. Robbins does an excellent job of making pathology approachable and engaging. If you need a path book, definitely get this one!
Good stuff.......2007-05-27
If you learning style is to open up a text book, than this one is an excellent resource.
totally depends on time...........2007-05-24
This is hands down the best path book, because it has all the diseases in easy to read format with nice tables and pics to complement. However you've got to have time in med school to read it. Depending on your curriculum and how fast you read you may want to compare it to small robins, which has less details and no gross pics.If you have enough time, meaning that you can read a chapter once and also read your notes at the same time without falling behind, then go for it. But if you cannot, then you might need to settle for the "pocket companion to robins". Even if you were able to use this book through your course you will definitely not use it(except for its gross pics) for the step 1. FOr that you will be served better with pocket companion. It has the same features as big robins except less details. I used the pocket companion, pics in big robins and goljan audio for the path for the step 1 and i made a 229/95.
big book of pathology.......2007-03-08
This is more of a reference text with highly detailed information. It is well written and very thorough. I recommend getting the companion questions to help bring out key concepts.
Book Description

concise and well organized.......2007-10-01
Baby robbins is really concise nd well organized. I like to read it first, and read it along with Big Robbins - ie. look at Big Robbins for pics or for clarification.
It doesn't give you the background though for the underlying cause and mechanism of some diseases, so you need to read that in Big Robbins.
patho resource.......2007-09-22
Awesome resource to accompany the textbook - it really sums up each chapter - great for nurse practitioner students.
Satisfied.......2007-08-08
I have the full version text book, as well as the pocket version and the pocket version is a good summary of the complete textbook. The topics are covered concisely but with enough detail and explanation. There is also references to all pages in the full text for extra clarification.
needed for step 1.......2007-05-24
this was one of my resources for path when i was taking path in my second year and when i was studying for the step 1. I found out that it was my best source for the step 1. For my step 1 i used this book and used the pics in the big robins. i also used goljan audio, which was my second and final resource for path for step 1. IF u use all three in combination in that fashion you should be ok for step 1.I ended up making 229/95 on my boards. However for your path course, it totally depends on your curriculum and teachers if this book could be helpful.Generally, it is best to read the teacher's notes in combination with small robins(if you dont have enough time) or big robins(if you have time to read).
must read IF YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT PATHOLOGY.......2007-02-08
This is an exceptional book ! It contains almost ALL facts you need to know in a readible and digestable concise format. I really love this book , since I read several editions of Robbins big book (90th editions), I found the new big Robbins too heavy and overloaded with lots extraneous information (GOOD FOR PROFS- NOT STUDENTS!). The pocket companion is your friend- you will not hate pathology after you finish it, yet develop the taste to know more.
Couple of remarks: if you are a very beginner- use the Robbins atlas when you read the pocket Robbins, as there are no either gross of micro photos in a small book. Also, I highly recommend Robbins CD companion with case-stidues, especially for pathology residents.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent condensation of material........2006-05-18
My opinion is that the first few chapters of the big Robbins are a must read. There is no way around it. But after that, Companion Robbins will save you a lot of time in medical school pathology. It is too much and too wordy to study this for USMLE.
I think if you only read Robbins companion book you will miss too much for medical school pathology. There simply is not enough time to just sit down and read the entire big Robbins. So, read Companion Robbins, learn all of tables and study the photos and diagrams in big Robbins, and skim through big Robbins for pertinant details in the text and highlighted areas. Read BRS Pathology and take notes in BRS pathology as you go (you can then use BRS pathology to study for tests and to study for USMLE). Then use Robbins Review book to test yourself with the questions and take notes in BRS pathology from this too.
Great Book.......2005-04-13
The best part about the "Pocket Robbins" is its concise explanation of just about everything that the "big Robbins" says. I have found that one of the most important decisions I make in medical school is how I focus my time. I can usually read through the pocket robbins in about half the time as the big robbins. I then use the big robbins as reference to clarify any concepts the the pocket robbins may not have explained in enough detail. One of the only real drawbacks to the pocket edition is that there are no images. The pocket edition references the page numbers of the topic in the big robbins so that you can go and look up the corresponding pictures. All in all, I really think this is a great book and if I had to choose between it and the big robbins, I would probably pick the pocket and supplement it with a pathology atlas. Happy studying.
The Real Thing.......2005-03-13
I love this pocket edition of Robbins. I use it to look up items when I am studying the week before exams. Everything high yield is in here and the index is great. I travel with this little thing, it lives on my desktop...it's the only book on my desktop. Cross-reference with Big Robbins, especially for photos.
Life saver.......2004-03-27
The small Robbins pulled me through my pathology. There is no time to read the big Robbins. I used it to prepare Step1 and i am glad that i use it.
Baby Robbins.......2003-12-12
There is no way around it. You must read this book, and review it thoroughly. If you haven't time to read the Papa or Mama Robbins and review with the baby, then just read the baby. You may utilise the Papa or Mama for its pictures otherwise. This is the only way you'll ever come to understanding pathology; I've finally come to realise it. Much easier to grasp the pathophysiology than in the BRS.

Good for self-assessment.......2003-07-18
I used this MCQs book when I studied Pathology. It's enjoying to test yourself after you study a specific organ system.
Features of this book:
1. This book is thoroughly page-referenced to Cotran, Kumar & Robbins: Robbins Pathologic Basis of Disease, 5th Ed.
2. Variety of MCQs (over 1400) covering wide range of topics.
3. Each chapter has many picture MCQs which are black and white, showing gross and microscopic specimens.
4. Very good explanations at the end of each chapter with their references.
5. Some of the MCQs options include (All of the above) and (None of the above) which are obsolete type of options.
6. The types of questions used are: Single-best-answer, True/ False type (which almost never come in the USMLE !), matching, and one, two, neither, or both (which are often difficult).
7. Unfortunately many MCQs come in the form of (All the following are true about ... EXCEPT) which is not what you face if you want to solve real USMLE-type questions.
8. Contents include:
General Pathology, Pediatric & Genetic Diseases, Nutritional & Environmental Diseases, Infectious Diseases, Cardiovascular , Respiratory, Hematopoeitic & lymphoid, GI tract, liver Biliary tree & Pancreas, Kidney & urinary tract, Reproductive, Breast, Skin, Endocrine, Musculoskeletal, and Nervous system.
9. This book comes in 239 pages, published by W. B. Saunders; 4th edition (1995).
Great for test prep........2000-06-01
This book was invaluable for the AAPA Pathologist's Assistance Fellowship Exam. Not only does it give numerous Robbin's based questions for practice, it also helps focus on imoportant areas, giving extended answers with explanations and page #s for review.

Book Description
This story behind the brilliant success of the Cassini-Huygens mission to the planet Saturn and its moon Titan details a monumental achievement that took scientists, engineers and government agencies from eighteen countries over 25 years to accomplish. The book tells it like it was and offers profound meaning not only for those interested in planetary exploration, but in general for all global leaders and professionals in business and government. The authors present this extraordinary feat of cross-cultural teamwork through the lens of paradoxical logic, demonstrating how a group of highly diverse people can excel globally if inspired by a unifying super ordinate goal and by discovering how success can be attained though the unity of diversity (be it disciplinary or cultural). Titans of Saturn is full of paradoxes: we travel to the far end of the solar system to discover new truths about ourselves. By reaching for the stars, cross-disciplinary and global teams can transform themselves and shape their own culture. The authors draw several important lessons of importance to dealing with the complexity of any large international or multi-disciplinary undertaking.

Lessons from The Titans of Saturn.......2006-09-06
I just finished reading The Titans of Saturn by Bram Groen and Charles Hampden-Turner. It's a powerful read about the multinational team that built the Cassini-Huygens spacecraft that reached Titan, one of the moons of Saturn, after a 15-year voyage. On one hand, the book is a science book, and it details how after seven years of space travel, a spacecraft was able to land safely millions of miles away from its launch point at Cape Canaveral. But there's much more to The Titans of Saturn, and that's the story of how people from vastly different cultures and far-flung continents were able to work together to accomplish such incredible science.
The title of Chapter Four perfectly encapsulates the essence of how a rocket was launched in 1997, orbited Saturn, and landed a probe on Titan in 2005: Competing to cooperate: how thousands of incomparable indivduals fulfilled their common mission. Very good read.

Book Description
The joint NASA-ESA Cassini-Huygens mission is a splendid example of how international cooperation can produce a wealth of scientific return that could not be afforded by the programs of any partner alone. ESA contributed the Titan atmosphere entry probe and NASA the orbiter spacecraft, the launch, and operations. Various national agencies contributed to the payloads of both the orbiter and the entry probe. Cassini will return much more information than the Galileo mission. While Saturn is further from the Sun than Jupiter, with less illumination and a colder environment, Saturn’s weaker radiation belt permits longer periods of observation close to Saturn than were possible with Galileo at Jupiter. Cassini provides shorter period orbits, closer images of the rings and the atmosphere, and many more satellite encounters, in fact 44 encounters with Saturn’s largest moon, Titan, in the first four years in orbit. This greater number of observations provides a rich scientific bonanza for the remote sensing instruments on Cassini.
This book is the third and last volume of this compendium on the Cassini-Huygens mission. This volume describes the remote sensing investigations on the Cassini orbiter: radio science, radar, visible and near infrared spectroscopy, far infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet spectroscopy, and visible imagery. This book is of interest to all potential users of the Cassini-Huygens data, to those who wish to learn about the planned scientific return from the Cassini-Huygens mission, and those curious about the processes occurring on this most fascinating planet.

The Titans of Saturn: Leadership and Performance Lessons from the Cassini-Huygens Mission
ASIN: 1852336560 |
Book Description
Saturn is back in the news! The Cassini/Huygens spacecraft, a joint venture by NASA and the European Space Agency, is on its way to Saturn, where it will arrive in July 2004. During 2005 it will explore beneath the clouds of Titan, Saturn's largest moon and potential home for extraterrestrial life. Written by an established space historian and experienced author, Mission To Saturn - Cassini and the Huygens Probe is an up-to-date and timely review of our knowledge of Saturn and its enigmatic moon, Titan, on which the Huygens probe will land to search for prebiotic chemistry or even life. It explains how the mission was planned, how it will operate and, as the spacecraft nears its target, puts into context the discoveries that are sure to follow from this once-in-a-lifetime mission.
Customer Reviews:
Harland's "Lord of the Rings".......2003-02-11
In David M. Harland's latest work, MISSION TO SATURN: CASSINI AND THE HUYGENS PROBE, the reader will find an excellent compendium of mankind's efforts to unravel the mysteries of the ringed giant planet culminating in the current joint U.S./European Cassini/Huygens mission, which one should note still has 1.5 years remaining before it reaches its primary target. Readers familiar with Harland's style will not be surprised that he hews closely to the now familiar, and almost formulaic, approach adopted for his well-received book on the Galileo mission to Jupiter. The first four chapters of MISSION TO SATURN are used to recount the centuries of astronomical observations that preceded the modern spacecraft reconnaissance and exploration efforts of Pioneer 11, Voyager 1, and Voyager 2; the final extended chapter is devoted almost exclusively to the Cassini/Huygens mission. In true workmanlike fashion, Harland utilizes his historian's eye for details, his archivist-like pursuit of primary source materials, many of which are very hard to find, and his rather considerable talent in rendering technical and scientific matters accessible to a wide range of readers. I highly recommend MISSION TO SATURN, which is richly illustrated and abundantly footnoted, to readers of all levels. The Cassini/Huygens mission will, if all goes as planned, return a veritable flood of data that will revolutionize our knowledge of the saturnian system. In anticipation of this, MISSION TO SATURN should take a prominent place on the planetary scientist's bookshelf.
