3 out of 5 stars a starter book, but a bit thin.......2005-08-23

Not a bad book for a starter into the topic, but it's fairly thin on details, and some of the ideas contained within do run counter to ideas found elsewhere. If you're looking for a basic book on Mason Bees, I'd suggest the one by Brian Griffin instead, which gives a bit more detail while being eminently more readable.

5 out of 5 stars If you want Mason Bees you need this book.......2003-03-25

Besides having Mason Bees for several years, I also keep Honey Bees. Mason bees are very easy, very gentle, require no special skills and they are superb pollinators. I suggest mason bees to every gardener who'd like to improve their garden.

I've read quite a few books on mason bees and have tried over the years various techniques, styles of bee blocks, etc., all with limited success. It seems as though by year three you end up with no mason bees no matter how hard you try or what kind of blocks you keep.

Margarite is a scientist and has seemed to figure out the right way to keep mason bees and has developed a new re-usable form of bee blocks that really works. You can buy these blocks from her, or with the included instructions, build them yourself if so inclined. I highly recommend her book and her approach to anyone interested in mason bees.

Astonishing facts, amazing truths, incredible calclations, and mind-bending theories about the biggest subject of all: the past. present, and future Universe.

When the Universe began, it was smaller than a grain of sand, smaller than the point of a needle, smaller than a cell of your body. Nothing in our daily experience prepares us for such an astronishing fact, yet physicists readily accept this concept as part of the Big Bang theory of the origins of the Universe.

          Book Description

Exploring the macrocosm from colossal galactic superclusters to quiet backwater planets, Matt Tweed offers a primer on the cosmos for anyone fascinated by the heavens. Taking a guided tour through the universe, we ride past quasars, jets, and galaxies to land on a curious world and examine an array of ideas about space and time. Tweed traces the evolution of stars and formation of planets, describing our "light bubble" and why we can't see any farther than we do. For a concise and accessible description of extra-solar planetary systems, black holes, pulsars, nebulae, great walls, dark matter, red shifts, and much more, The Compact Cosmos is an indispensable guide. Data tables, lists of cosmological constants, and distances from Earth to other bodies in space form a useful appendix.

3 out of 5 stars Good information, but poor editing makes it difficult at times.......2007-07-14

I know quite a bit about the topics covered in this book, but I always find it good to read material from a variety of sources. That's why I picked this up.

The information is clear (I would imagine this being the case for a novice as well). Klein uses some clever examples to drive home his points and to make some of the complex subjects easier to understand.

However, the editing is downright AWFUL. Taken from the BACK COVER (!!) of the book:

"It is hoped that The Humbled Blue Orb will wet the reader's appetite with its clearly written text and illustration;..."

I assume most of you reading this review will notice that he should have used "whet" instead of "wet." Also, all too often there are typos that make the sentences hard to understand ("as" will be written "at", etc.), and some of the punctuation is just dreadful. I guess that's what happens when authors self-publish!

If you can get by these flaws, then pick up this book as a good primer for the subject.

          4 out of 5 stars good content.......2006-06-30

Despite the book losing me at certain points, especially in attempting to drive through all the 'weeds' of particle physics, I overall found this book very readable and enjoyable.

I have read a couple of books similar to this and found this one to be on par with the rest, and even provide some new insights on certain topics.

Recommended - especially for those just getting into the reading topics.

          5 out of 5 stars highly readable.......2006-06-16

I have just started reading this type of material and was concerned about the content going over my head. I was pleasantly surprised to find this book relatively easy to read with minimal confusion and good examples and pictures.

I would recommend this book for any budding science reader.

          4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2006-04-21

I just happened to download the e-book version of this to see how it read since I do not normally read science topics.

Despite this, I found it a good book that flowed nicely. Overall, I would definately recommend it for the popular science reader audience.

If there is a second edition, a glossary might be helpful for people who are not familiar with some of the terminology.

          4 out of 5 stars great read........2006-04-04

          Great read.

Overall I really enjoyed it and found it to be well written.
I would highly recommend it for anyone who wants a high-level overview of Quantum Physics and String Theories.

The illustrations and tables were useful as well, despite them being a bit small at times.

I have read quite a few of these types of books, and I found this book to be just as readable as other books on the topics presented.

          Very enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Relive Your Childhood..........2006-08-11

If you were a male child growing up in the 1950s or `60s, the chances are very good that you will remember many of the models that author Mat Irvine describes in this fine volume covering an obscure aspect of spaceflight history.

"Creating Space" consists of two parts of approximately equal length. The first half is full of nostalgia, at least for me. Logically organized into 12 chapters covering, for example, "Early Dreams," "Rocket Planes and the V-Weapons" and "The Visions of Wernher and Willy," the first 200 pages include exquisite glossy color photos of assembled models and, stirring even more pleasant memories, their boxtop art. All of the models I built as a kid growing up just down the Florida coast from Cape Canaveral are covered in detail here: Strombecker's RM-1 Lunar Rocket Ship, Revell's XSL-01 Manned Space Ship, Lindberg's Lunar Lander, Monogram's Space Taxi and Passenger Rocket (designed by Willy Ley) and Hawk's Convair Atlas Space Station. The early rockets and guided missile kits are well represented also. Remember Revell's X-17 Research Rocket and Aerobee-Hi (with its exquisite set of decals), Adams' Honest John "Atomic Rocket" and Renwal's Terracruzer with Mace Missile? They're all here, along with hundreds of others. Closer to today, there are chapters devoted to current Space Shuttle, Mir and International Space Station kits, and a whimsical chapter covering U.F.O.s (such as the classic "Adamski Flying Saucer") and cinematic spacecraft such as those from "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Destination Moon." The quality of the photos is superb, and the extensive text describes the kits in great detail.

The second half of "Creating Space" is a tabular listing of virtually every spacecraft, rocket, missile and science fiction model kit ever made. Each entry includes a description of the kit, its scale, the manufacturer's reference number and the year it was first released. This is an excellent reference guide which appears to be both exhaustive and definitive. It is sure to be an invaluable resource for the collector or serious retro-hobbyist. There's also a useful dealer's reference, a list of other reference sources and some Internet links.

"Creating Space" is a unique and valuable book. I no longer have any of the space model kits that I built as a child. But I still got immense pleasure from reading Mr. Irvine's clear, thorough and detailed text, marveling at the crisp photos and re-living, for a moment at least, the joys of putting these kits together with tube cement that somehow always seemed to get smeared all over everything. If you're at all interested in the subject, buy this book. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful reference for a webmaster who fields questions!.......2002-10-20

This book was a much anticipated addition to my library. As a webmaster of a Apollo website, I'm often asked questions about space models. This book has it all with great descriptions and color images of space model kits. The table of scales of each type available is very useful for collectors.

I can't even begin to describe the affect this book has had on my way of thinking in regards to the universe we live in and my own mortality. Before I read this book(a billion times)I was always interested in the universe and what was out there. A co-worker heard of my interest and bought me this book as a Christmas present. I thought, "wow. pretty cool". But in no way was I ready for the abundance if information placed at my disposal by this book. I'm just in awe when I read it. The author really does seem to have passion about our universe and it showed in the writing. The descriptions and hypotheticals are so vivid. You don't have to be some genious to understand what this book is telling you but it doesn't come of as "kiddy" either. To me that is what makes it so wonderful. It gives you the feeling that someone has actually traveled to the ends of the universe and their just telling you what it was like. Even the chapter on Earth is suprisingly very interesting. It gave me a new appreciation(and fear) for this planet. So calm and unassuming in comparison to other planets. But so powerful to all it's inhabitants. "Before our universe existed, there was no past, present, or future. Space did not exist, nor did vacuum. There was nothing-even dark cannot exist without light". wow

              5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking!.......1999-05-24

This book was, simply put, breathtaking. I don't know why someone would wish to sabotage the overall rating by giving this masterpiece one star...but clearly they were not reading the same book I was. To each their own. I found the facts within the book quite accurate myself....having read more than one hundred books of its kind and finding no inconsistencies. The pictures within the book itself were magnificent and well placed throughout the book. The text itself was also very informative and showed that the author was very well versed in the ways of the cosmos...both theoretically and factually. I highly recommend this book to anyone with interest in our cosmos. You won't be dissapointed.

1 out of 5 stars Very little to do with the Hubble.......1999-04-21

This book actually shows very little understanding of the work done by Hubble or its relationship to other NASA missions. Many of the pictures attributed to the Hubble come from other missions; further, more than one artist's rendition is given as a Hubble image.

              Celestial Delights

The Best Astronomical Events through 2010 by Francis Reddy and Greg Walz-Chojnacki

In the coming decade, North Americans will be treated to an exciting parade of meteor showers, planetary transits, lunar eclipses, and strong displays of northern lights. Learn to identify what's happening in the night sky with CELESTIAL DELIGHTS, both an introduction to astronomy and a calendar of upcoming celestial events written for urban and suburban sky-gazers—country skies and expensive telescopes not required. This revised edition predicts and explains numerous naked-eye events with the same lucid writing and easy-to-grasp diagrams that earned the first edition rave reviews. An astronomy guide for the layperson, CELESTIAL DELIGHTS deepens our appreciation of what we see when we gaze at the stars, and inspires us to do so more often.

              5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2003-12-25

This book is easy to read and understand with lots of diagrams and illustrations. It covers everything from meteor showers to eclipses to viewing planets. There are illustrations to show exactly where to look in the sky (helpful for those of us who aren't too familiar with the constellations), and a calendar in the back which shows you what will be happening each month till 2010. I have always enjoyed astromony, but I always felt like I missed eclipses or forgot about meteor showers. This book will solve those problems!

5 out of 5 stars A new edition is coming!.......2002-03-28

Greg and I are now in the process of completing an updated version of Celestial Delights, which will track naked-eye events from 2003 through 2010 (and in some cases beyond). It is slated for release in October by Celestial Arts, ISBN 1-58761-157-0, 7 x 10 inches.

              5 out of 5 stars Celestial Delights.......2001-10-23

I received this book as a gift in 1995 and have referred to it monthly sharing with others the upcoming events of the celestial sky. I hope the authors of this fine book will release same for the next ten years. I keep searching new releases for information regarding same. I look forward to the new release!

I agree with Steve from Ketchum, ID.
When will we be able to learn what to watch for from 2002 to 2010 in the beautiful sky here in Springdale (Zion National Park), Utah?

              5 out of 5 stars Where's the next edition?.......2000-11-03

I hope you authors plan to do the next edition to cover 2001-2010. I found the current edition very useful for what to look for and when. Eclipses, times etc. All very helpful.
