For the untrained observer, it can be quite a challenge to sort out the many trees that make up a stand of older forest in, say, New England or the Ozarks. This well-illustrated guidebook, covering 364 species, comes to the rescue with photographs organized in several ways: by, for example, the shape of the leaf or needle, by the fruit, by the flower or cone, and by autumn coloration. Following one visible characteristic or another, the reader can narrow the range of possibilities, then turn to an informative text that describes a tree's physical characteristics, habitat, and range. Many of the species covered are relatively rare, such as the "stinking cedar" of the Georgia-Florida border; others are locally abundant, such as the paper birch of the boreal forest, used to make ice-cream sticks; still others, such as the smooth sumac, are widespread. The guidebook also covers ornamentals introduced from other continents, such as the Chinese privet and Mahaleb cherry. --Gregory McNamee

Great Guide that is ALMOST Perfect.......2007-08-18
I have always liked the Audubon Society Field Guides. This particular guide is great in the amount of color photos for sometimes easily identifying species in all seasons, whether from the fall leaves, bark, summer leaves, and the fruit it produces. Also the organization of the guide is very good. My cons below are NOT enough to prevent me from recommending this guide. Compared to other guides it's still the best.
CONS: The amount of information in the back is not always consistent. Also there still isn't always an easy way to differentiate some of the similar species (e.g. Oaks). In other words the pictures and/or the descriptions are not enough to distinguish like species.
helpful.......2007-07-03
Very much help for figuring out what trees we have and we have a lot. Pictures are very nice and cross reference if you aren't totally sure of what you are looking at. Very handy size too
Great Book.......2007-06-27
Every tree and every leaf that you can think of is in this book. Great clear pictures and the information is great. So glad I purchased this book for my husband. The equivalant to bird watching. Tree watching.
Information Packed.......2007-05-17
My new hobby is woodturning bowls so I bought this book to help me identify trees that supply my wood. Once I learned how to search the material, this book has been great fun and very useful. I take it with me when I walk my dog around the neighborhood to identify trees.

Book Description
This unique book provides tree enthusiasts with a guide based on minimal technical language and excellent photography for identification of 372 tree species–listed alphabetically–common to forests of the Eastern United States.
For each tree species, their individual form characteristics, habitat and ecology, multiple common names, similar species, derivation of the binomial name, wood uses, wildlife uses, landscape uses, and historical uses are covered.
For tree identification enthusiasts, naturalists, foresters, wildlife managers, arboreta, botanical gardens, and natural resource managers.
Book Description
Part armchair travelogue, part guide book, this projected three-volume series--divided into the western, central, and eastern United States--will introduce readers to all 155 national forests across the country. This Land is the only comprehensive field guide that describes the natural features, wildernesses, scenic drives, campgrounds, and hiking trails of our national forests, many of which--while little known and sparsely visited--boast features as spectacular as those found in our national parks and monuments. Each entry includes logistical information about size and location, facilities, attractions, and associated wilderness areas. For about half of the forests, Robert H. Mohlenbrock has provided sidebars on the biological or geological highlights, drawn from the "This Land" column that he has written for Natural History magazine since 1984.
Superbly illustrated with color photographs, botanical drawings, and maps, this book is loaded with information, clearly written, and easy to use.
Customer Reviews:
E. G. a naturalist from New England.......2006-12-23
A very useful and worthwhile book. It contains information about many natural areas that are not well-described in other readily available sources, and is particularly valuable for people with an interest in forest and plant ecology and botany. Its only major weakness seems to be in the lack of detailed maps showing trails and specific locations within different national forests.

Book Description
Encompassing part or all of 28 eastern U.S. states and two Canadian provinces, the central hardwood forests cover a variety of habitats and include trees adapted to a broad range of conditions. This book describes 188 native or naturalized tree species found in these forests, plus 84 trees that are commonly planted in the region.
Customer Reviews:
For the Serious horticulturist or the Home Gardener.......2004-07-19
This scholarly manual explains the different forest communities found locally and describes the 188 native species that make up this diverse ecology, with the goal of encouraging the conservation of this ecosystem and the use of native trees in the landscape.
This is not the book to get students interested in trees........1998-08-27
This is primarily an ID guide to 188 native and naturalized trees, and another 84 that are commonly planted in what is termed the Central Hardwood Forests, defined as those portions of eastern North America dominated by deciduous trees. This is an octopus-like area that includes all or parts of 30 states and provinces to varying degrees. The only states wholly within the "shading" are IL,IN,RI, and KY; nearly so are CT, OH, TN, and MO. Small to large chunks of MN, WI, MI, PA, WV, IA,NE, KS, OK, TX, AK, AL, GA, NC, VA, MD, NJ, NY, MA, NH, Quebec and Ontario fall within the boundary; but ME and VT are inexplicably outside it, as are vast areas of deciduous forest in New York state. Few if any of the trees in this book are restricted to the Central Hardwood Forests -- most range widely beyond the boundary of this arbitrarily defined region, and many barely enter it at all. The reader would be better served if the book simply covered trees of the northeastern United States, without contriving an ecological framework for choosing species to write about. Most of the book consists of tree descriptions alphabetized from Abies to Zanthoxylum, with over 900 photos of varying quality, and maps for most species. Data headings are Habit, Bark, Twigs, Buds, Leaves, Fruit, Wood, Habitat and Range, Propagation, Wildlife Value, Landscape Value, and Best Recognizable Features. Discussions are very brief. A section of 116 color photos adds a welcome break to the cramped and confusing composition of the text. Summer and winter keys to genera are confusing due to the inclusion of numerals referring to previous couplets, and left unexplained; and because there is no identation, or spacing between couplets. The book is sturdily made and contains valid information, but is uninteresting in its style and mostly visually unappealing. It is not likely to inspire students.

Book Description
The remarkable discussions in this volume took place between Rudolf Steiner and workers at the Goetheanum in Dornach, Switzerland, who chose the varied subject matter. The astonishing nature of his responses the questionstheir insight, knowledge, and spiritual depthis testimony to his outstanding ability as a spiritual initiate and teacher. Accessible and stimulating, the records of these sessions are both entertaining and profound.
In this volume, Rudolf Steiner discusses Lemuria and Atlantis; vegetarianism; children's nutrition; manure and soil; hardening of the arteries; the sense of smell; weather and its causes; origin of the human being; Darwinism; earth strata and fossils; Biela's comet; lightning; the sun; volcanoes; and more.

Customer Reviews:
Hard to Read.......2005-02-08
This book was hard to get through. There are two main problems. One being that these are transcripts of lectures. Steiner is taking questions from people in the crowd so some of his sentences are rather broken and hard to follow because he is answering questions on the spot, not writing them down like an essay or book. Secondly, it is translated from German to English making the sentences seem almost unnatural.
Beyond that, the book is somewhat interesting. I've always had respect for Steiner and his thoughts on agriculture and education. However, Steiner makes some broad generalisations. For instance, he says that all journalists love coffee because it keeps their thoughts focused on one subject, and all diplomats like tea because it helps them jump from thought to thought. He also makes some broad generalisations about ancient Indian and Chinese cultures.
He's got some interesting thoughts on how the Earth came into being, and the evolution of mankind. They are definetly not what you're taught and school which makes them all the more valuable.
Since these lectures were given in the 1920's they must be taken in context. Even though his thoughts are fascinating and give the reader much to think about, I would not reccommend this book to anyone, except maybe a diehard Steiner fan. Check out some of his writings instead. They are just as interesting, much more readable, and cover many of the same topics.

A scholarly examination of King Louis XIV's attempts to legitimize his reign in France .......2006-07-03
Ellen M. McClure (Associate Prof. of French, Univ. of Illinois at Chicago) presents Sunspots And The Sun King: Sovereignty And Mediation In Seventeenth-Century France, a scholarly examination of King Louis XIV's attempts to legitimize his reign in France during the sixteenth century. From a close reading of texts devoted to the definition of sovereignty, to a meticulous study of Louis XIV's memoirs, to an analysis of the diplomats, ambassadors, and mediators who communicated the king's authority, Sunspots And The Sun King leaves no stone unturned in its search to delineate the monarchial philosophies and justifications of the nation and era. Especial scrutiny is devoted to the inherent contradictions of the logical and mystical aspects of the concept of "divine right monarchy". Written for advanced students and scholars of history and philosophy, Sunspots And The Sun King is especially recommended for college and university library collections.

Stardogs: Astrology for Dogs
ASIN: 1581822642 |
Book Description
What's Your Sign, Spot? Sunspot is a thought-provoking, humorous look at the relationship between dogs and their astrological signs. Be it a determined Aries, stubborn Taurus, spaced-out Gemini, melodramatic Cancer, kingly Leo, orderly Virgo, balanced Libra, intense Scorpio, enthusiastic Sagittarius, sure-footed Capricorn, curious Aquarius, or devoted Piscesthe sign under which your dog was born can at least partly explain the reasons for its behavior.
The idea for Sunspot started as a joke when a friend complained to Laurie Birnsteel that her dog hated change. When asked if her dog was born in May, the friend replied yes. That's why, Birnsteel replied. Your dog is a Taurus, and Tauruses hate change. Thus began more than two years of researchincluding hundreds of questionnaires and interviews with dog ownersinto the relationships of dogs and their signsmore specifically, how their astrological signs affect their behavior.
The last dog who owned me was a Gemini, Birnsteel writes, and I never knew if she would lift her leg or squat. Like the zodiac twins, she had different and distinct personalities. She could be sweet with someone one minute and growl at her the next. Lili, the dog who owns me now, is a Cancer. She's gentle, not confrontational, emotional, and melodramatic. What can I say?
Each sign has its own chapter in Sunspot. Beginning with lists of the good doggy and bad doggy characteristics for each, Birnsteel proceeds to offer real-life examples of dogs behaving in ways consistent with their signs. At the end of the book, the questionnaires that pet owners completed are included.
Whether you've lived, loved, laughed, or cried over a dog, this book is for you! PETS; ASTROLOGY 6 X 7, 160 PAGES PAPERBACK
Customer Reviews:
Sunspot, The Best Ever Astrological Guide to Your Dog.......2002-07-14
In "Sunspot," Laurie Birnsteel, a Hawaii native who currently lives in Louisville, has created a book that really should have been written a long, long time ago. But it wasn't, and for that alone she deserves credit. But she has also walked a fine line between silly and serious - something that takes skill. For those who put no stock in astrology - especially PET astrology - Birnsteel's cheeky approach to this book provides a knowing wink. Simultaneously, for those who do, she never condescends or makes light of the subject matter.
By breaking doggy astrological traits down into "bad doggy" and "good doggy" columns, she makes it an easy read, and testimony from actual dog owners is the hook. The book ends with a "survey" so that, if you don't know your dog's birthdate, you can determine what sign your pooch falls under. All in all, it's clear that Birnsteel is an animal lover who is merely enjoying the opportunity provided by a part of her life that she holds dear. Dog lovers will eat this up, especially if consumed as a light read. Others probably will scoff. Either way, it will be a welcome addition to your coffee table.
Astrology and the personalities of beloved canines.......2002-07-08
Sunspot: The Best Ever Astrological Guide To Your Dog by freelance writer Laurie Birnsteel is an enjoyable and original examination of the connection between astrology and the personalities of beloved canine companions. Individual chapters are listed by sign, from Aries to Pisces, and each zodiac constellation reflects certain mannerisms and behaviors that may well influence one's faithful dog. Sunspot is enthusiastically recommended reading for pet owners with an interest in astrology and its influence on their canine companions.

Book Description
In this book Roger Guesnerie contributes to the critical assessment of the Rational Expectations hypothesis (REH). He focuses on the multiplicity question that arises in (infinite horizon) Rational Expectation models and considers the implications for a theory of endogenous fluctuations. The REH, which dominates the economic modeling of expectations in most fields of formalized economic theory, is often associated with an optimistic view of the working of the markets--a view that Guesnerie scrutinizes closely.
The book is divided into four parts. The first part uses the framework of simple models to characterize the stochastic processes that trigger self-fulfilling prophecies and examines the connections between periodic equilibria (cycles) and stochastic equilibria (sunspots). (A sunspot is a random shock uncorrelated with underlying economic fundamentals.) The second part views sunspot equilibria as overreactions triggered by small variations of intrinsic variables--rather than as fluctuations with no trigger--and looks at the consequences for a monetary theory à la Lucas. The third part develops the basic theory to encompass more complex, multidimensional systems. It focuses in particular on the special class of equilibria generating small fluctuations around a steady state. Broadening the scope, the fourth part looks at the stability of cycles, sunspots in systems with memory, and current research on rational expectations.

Product Description
For anyone who has read and enjoyed Aesop's fables or Gibran's "The Prophet," this book is sure to please. The book is a unique blend of fables, poetry, and drawings by the author and photography by Rhae Adams. Like Aesop, Adams tells entertaining stories centered on a central character, Faith Moon. She renders her advice in poetic metaphors to the residents of a fictional small town. But it is much more, as each character struggles to find the best way to live their lives.
