Book Description
Americans have a love-hate relationship with negative campaigning, claiming to despise it and ranting about how it turns off the electorate, while at the same time paying an increasing amount of attention to negative ads and tactics during ever-lengthening campaign seasons. Swint gathers the most compelling of these campaigns from the two "Golden Ages" of negative campaigning--1864 to 1892 and 1988 to the present--in addition to some that fall outside those demarcations, and ranks them in descending order, from No. 25 to No. 1. Mudslingers covers presidential, senatorial, gubernatorial, and mayoral races and chronicles the dirtiest, most low-down campaign tactics of all time. The list includes the presidential campaign of 1800, when the disputed outcome of the race between Thomas Jefferson and John Adams had to be decided by the House of Representatives, and the election of 2004, in which George W. Bush beat John Kerry after one of the nastiest showdowns on record. The first round of negative campaigning in American history was driven by post-Civil War politics, the end of Reconstruction, an increasingly corrupt federal government, and a rabid partisan press. The current Golden Age of mudslinging and dirty politics is driven by huge increases in campaign spending, television advertising, decreased civility in public life, and a muckraking mass media. These fascinating stories from the annals of negative campaigning will entertain as well as educate, reminding us, the next time we are tempted to decry the current climate, that it was (almost) ever thus.
Customer Reviews:
Fun analysis of nasty campaigns, but some of the chapters are a bit thin.......2007-01-30
When I saw Mudslingers reviewed by John Fund in the Wall Street Journal I was intrigued. I love politics, and for political junkies like myself nothing beats reading about a nasty campaign. I waited a little for the price tag to go down, but since it was never lowered, I broke down and bought it. I was pretty happy with the book. Mudslingers attempts to rank the top 25 most vicious American political campaigns. The book is a very interesting read, but a lot of its analysis is pretty thin and leaves something to be desired.
Many of the campaigns the book looks at are pretty well known. These include presidential contests: Bush v. Kerry in 2004, Bush v. Dukakis, 1988, and Nixon v. McGovern in 1972. The author does a good job bringing up the salacious details from these campaigns like the Swift Boat and Willy Horton commercials. Reading about them is fun. But the best parts of the book are the campaigns that aren't known by most people either because they weren't national races or they occurred over 100 years ago.
Two particular favorites of mine which I vividly remember despite only being a kid at the time are from New York: the brutal 1998 U.S. Senate race between Chuck Schumer and Al D'Amato and the 1989/1993 mayoral campaigns between David Dinkins and Rudolph Giuliani. While these races were a while ago, they were incredibly memorable. I almost forgot about D'Amato's famous putzhead insult, and I loved the discussion of D'Amato's hard nosed (and often shameless politicking) which including going to synagogues with his own yarmulke stitched with the name Alphonse. The two close races between Dinkins and Rudy were also classics, and the book does well exploring how much they divided the Big Apple, especially in the wake of the Crown Heights riots.
Being a Jersey political guy, I also took a twinge of pride that several New Jersey races made the top 25 (how could the Garden State not be included in a discussion of negative campaigns?). The 1996 Torricelli-Zimmer battle was very bitter, though I was a bit disappointed the 1994 Lautenberg-Haytaian face-off was ignored as that race was legendary for its nastiness. There are some other gems like Harold Washington's groundbreaking run for Chicago mayor in 1983, the Edwin Edwards v. David Duke Louisiana governor's race, and the Robb-Ollie North Senate campaign. All of them are covered in pretty decent detail. Perhaps the best one was the 1990 Senate race between Senator Jesse Helms and Charlotte Mayor Harvey Gantt. If you don't know about the famous "Hands" commercial that cost Gantt the election, this book is a good read for you. That might be the most devastatingly effective commercial in a non-presidential race ever.
Mudslingers is a good read, though perhaps not worth the $45 price tag. I don't think the chapters are big enough to warrant shelling out that much money. Still, if you love politics and campaigning the book is definitely worth checking out, even if the analyses could have been thicker.

Customer Reviews:
Disappointed.......2006-11-14
The summary and review were not helpful at all and misleading. As a food service professional, I am always looking for new ideas for tablescapes for my banquet facility. The book was impractical and the centerpieces were uninspiring.
Suddenly A Centerpiece.......2004-12-29
I found this book to be very easy to follow with great color picture samples. The instructions are easy to follow.
You will feel great once you complete the project and it actually looks like the picture!
Wonderfully well done!

Book Description
Trouble is brewing at the Varmint Theater! Before he knows it, watchmaker mouse Hermux Tantamoq finds himself not only hired to track down a mysterious blackmailer, but roped into designing the set for an upcoming show. Hermux is on the case--and busy backstage--but as he enters the chaotic world of the theater he's lost in a whirlwind of distractions: an accidental foray into "reality theater," film director Brinx Lotelle's shameless interest in Hermux's friend Linka, beauty queen Tucka Mertslin's latest shenanigans, mysterious newcomer Corpius Crounce, and a very strange parrot.
When Hermux receives a threatening message, he realizes it's up to him to save the day, save the theater, protect his new friends and get the girl--a lot for one mouse to handle, even with a surprisingly talented pet ladybug in tow!
Rich descriptions and snappy, witty dialogue bring Pinchester to life in this highly-anticipated third installment of Hermux's adventures.
Customer Reviews:
A family classic series.......2007-10-07
A tightly edited, carefully written children's book even adults will love. Hermux is a quirky little mouse who finds himself in the unlikely role of set designer and private investigator. He solves a cold case mystery and designs a spectacular set for a musical production in the same story. Hermux is our guy!
We have read each book in the series together as a family and they are written for children but not down to children so that adults are also drawn in. The world Hoeye creates is so visually real it's great for developing comprehension and memory skills. Hermux and his friends have become classics for our family.
No Time Like Show Time .......2007-09-22
No Time Like Show Time is a story about a young mouse who is always trying to help the community whether they like it or not. The plot has many twists and turns with lots of characters that come into the story with different identities. A young mouse, Hermux Tantamoq is a watchmaker who has a knack for solving mysteries. In this story Hermux helps Fluster Varmint, a famous director and the owner of the Varmint Variety Theater. The theater is in trouble and brings a whole new twist to Hermux's life. The character involved in the troubles of the theater is Dr. Mennus a mole who ruins the young and beautiful Nurella Pinch's acting career and starts the difficulty for the theater years later.
Fluster Varmint's chain of bad events begins when his wife dies shortly after birth of their daughter Beulith. A lot of the story revolves around Beulith and the theater because they are the most important things in Varmint's life. The theater is the only place that Beulith Varmint knows because she grew up around the stage of Varmint Variety Theater.
The other books in this series are Time Stop for No Mouse and The Sands of Time. In the series they all start the same way. Hermux never goes out to find the adventures the adventures always find him in one way or other, leading him into a world he would have never known existed. The first book really starts to explain Hermux life of solving mysteries. I like his writing because the chapters are short so it's easier to read for long periods of time. It's very hard to stop reading this book because it's full of excitement. I liked this book because there is never dull part of the book and the plot never stops. This book is full of suspense and always keeps you guessing.
Delightful, magical, wise, clever, witty and fun!.......2007-03-14
I love this series so much--the characters are interesting, nuanced, and so well developed. In each book, there is witty social commentary combined with an engrossing mystery. This third installment of the series doesn't disappoint. I'm already eagerly awaiting this fall's release of Time to Smell the Roses.
No Time Like Show Time.......2005-10-16
No Time Like Show Time was a great book. With lots of adventure. It is about a mouse fighting a crime committed in a theater in his city. With others he works to solve the mystery of the crime. The case is a murder investigation. Varmint Variety Theater was the scene of the crime. They use all kinds of gadgets and brains to seek out this territying crime.
The authors writing style was unique and amazing. All of the words you could tell were not just jotted down they were thought through. It had a great plot and was never slow. It was a book of non-stop action.
I loved this book for many reasons. It had tons of adventure. It was suspensful and full of fun things that always drew my attention. It also had well developed characters. I would give this book five stars because it was awesome. It had all the things that make a great book. If you liked Time Srops for No Mouse and Sands of Time you would definitely like this book.
Great Series.......2005-05-23
First of all, this is a great series and if you haven't read the first two books then go do it now! No Time Like Show Time was just as suspenseful and cool as the other books and I hope the next book comes out soon! In case you're wondering what it's about, it is set in the world of mice, rats, and other like creatures with the main character a mouse watchmaker named Hermux Tantamoq, who has an otherwise quiet life until he meets Linka Perflinger in the first book, who becomes his new love interest and somehow gets him involved in all sorts of thrilling adventures throughout the first and second books. Besides a new mysterious plot with each book, there is also a little romance for the teen readers, but it is tastefully done and there is nothing, in my opinion, overly romantic. Anyway, it's a great book and series and I would really recommend that you consider buying it!

Book Description
There may not have been any concept of Bar or Bat Mitzvah in 10th century Kiev 'yet,' but that wouldn't stop the nearly grown children of the Kagan of the Khazars from arranging the appropriate rite of passage and blessing for the changing of the societies around them which they knewthe pagan Vikings, Rus, and Pechenegs surrounding Kiev, the Volga Finnic peoples of the Urals, the eternal Silk Road, Christian Byzantium to the south, the Caucasus Mountaineers, the grassland steppes, the rabbi-scholars of Constantinople and Spain, the Turks arriving from Central Asia, and the Islamic Caliphate of Persia and Baghdad to the East. Each encounter began a new concept and framework for their time-travel adventures.
The garden of the Khazars is a storyteller's paradise, especially during the time that their ruler's family, friends, and associates turned Jewish, and the Kagan of the Khazars got tied up in the belly of a Viking Ship, rescued by his thirteen-year-old son, and his daughter, the teenage, time-traveling Princess Tarbagatay rode between the fourth and tenth centuries with the Queen of the Steppes. Welcome to anthropology through fiction and my series for all storytellers on tall tales of Medieval Khazaria.
Let my first person proto-Bar or Bat Mitzvah gift story book novel, although fiction, guide you through the walkways of anthropology and ethnology in my Kagan's Kids of Khazaria Time-Travel Adventures, the perfect book for a Mitzvah gift for thirteen to fifteen-year old readers and also for their parents. As an author of multicultural and multiethnic novels that reveal the nuances of anthropology through fictionstories, novels, and playslet this novel and the treat that follows be your mentor to open doors to new opportunities, choices, roads, and destinations.

So Farming before WWII was easy, huh?.......2006-05-09
The book tells us about life in the Midwestern/Iowa area before WWII. The major industry was farming. Leisure time was prized and largely a social affair up until movie houses and radio came along in the 1920's.
I read about early school buses, taking a bath in the den, and families having to move to another farm. Life prior to the New Deal involved fireplaces and kerosene; Hamilton mentions the "electric taste" of cakes made in electric ovens.
Part of you will say thank goodness we have this and that (even in 1974 younger generations surely said that) and part of you will wish you could take a step back into that era.
Read it; I was lucky to find that the book is still available. My uncle (he graduated Iowa State) got this book for my dad and I thought it was as rare as the Dead Sea Scrolls. Thankfully it isn't. I hope more books like this are out there.

Book Description
Solar Journey: The Significance of Our Galactic Environment for the Heliosphere and Earth lays the foundation for an interdisciplinary study of the influence of interstellar material on the solar system and Earth as we travel through the Milky Way Galaxy. The solar wind bubble responds dynamically to interstellar material flowing past the Sun, regulating interstellar gas, dust, and cosmic particle fluxes in the interplanetary medium and the Earth. Cones of interstellar gas and dust focused by solar gravity, the magnetospheres of the outer planets, and cosmic rays at Earth all might yield the first hints of changes in our galactic environment.
Twelve articles from leading experts in diverse fields discuss the physical changes expected as the heliosphere adjusts to its galactic environment. Topics include the interaction between the solar wind and interstellar dust and gas, cosmic ray modulation, magnetospheres, temporal variations in the solar environment, and the cosmic ray isotope record preserved in paleoclimate data.

Book Description
The accretion process is thought to play a key role in the Universe. This book explains, in a form intelligible to graduate students, its relation to the formation of new stars, to the energy release in compact objects and to the formation of black holes. The monograph describes how accretion processes are related to the presence of jets in stellar objects and active galactic nuclei and to jet formation. The authors treat theoretical work as well as current observational facts. This volume of the highly esteemed Les Houches series is meant as an advanced text that can serve to attract students to exciting new research work in astrophysics.

Book Description
This volume, together with those on Cosmic Rays in the Heliosphere and on Cosmic Rays at Earth, rounds off a trilogy devoted to cosmic rays. It specifically deals with the astrophysical sources and acceleration processes of cosmic rays. The principal aims are to examine the cosmic ray phenomenon in the context of our evolving understanding of the Galaxy as an astrophysical system. Observations of cosmic rays, and theoretical models of their origin and propagation, are critically reviewed. The extent to which these reinforce, or conflict with, other astronomical information about the Galaxy is addressed. Other themes are the extent to which galactic-scale processes can be illuminated by studies or analogous heliospheric processes, and the identification of key questions for future investigations. The workshop assembled physicists working in the fields of cosmic rays origin and propagation, structure, evolution, and composition of the Galaxy and the interstellar medium. In addition, researchers working in relevant areas of radio, optical, X-ray and gamma-ray astronomy attended the workshops. This has strengthened the interdisciplinary links between these scientific communities.

Book Description
Several space misions during the last decade on the energetic particles in space have contributed to the enormous progress in the observational data and their interpretations on the galactic cosmic rays. These include Anuradha mission aboard Spacelab-3 that gave for the first time results on the charged states of galactic cosmic ray heavy ions, the LDEF experiment on the ultraheavy cosmic ray nuclei which had a spectacular recovery leading to enormous quantity of high quality data collected in the large detector in a 5-year exposure in space, the ISEE-3 mission on the isotopic composition which gave high quality isotopic data on iron nuclei, the Heavy Ions in Space (HIIS) mission and the High Energy Isotope Spectrometer Telescope as well as ONR-604 experiment on isotopic composition which yielded several new results. The penetration studies into the magnetosphere by cosmic ray heavy ions measured by S 81-1 and CRRES experiment gave new insight

Book Description
The eleventh COSPAR colloquium The Outer Heliosphere: The Next Frontiers was held in Potsdam, Germany, from 24-28 July, 2000, and is the second dedicated to this subject after the first one held in Warsaw, Poland in 1989.
Roughly a century has passed after the first ideas by Oliver Lodge, George Francis Fitzgerald and Kristan Birkeland about particle clouds emanating from the Sun and interacting with the Earth environment. Only a few decades after the formulation of the concepts of a continuous solar corpuscular radiation by Ludwig Bierman and a solar wind by Eugene Parker, heliospheric physics has evolved into an important branch of astrophysical research. Numerous spacecraft missions have increased the knowledge about the heliosphere tremendously. Now, at the beginning of a new millenium it seems possible, by newly developed propulasion technologies to send a spacecraft beyond the boundaries of the heliosphere. Such an Interstellar Proce will start the in-situ exploration of interstellar space and, thus, can be considered as the first true astrophysical spacecraft. The year 2000 appeared to be a highly welcome occassion to review the achievements since the last COSPAR Colloquia 11 years ago, to summarize the present developments and to give new impulse for future activities in heliospheric research.

Book Description
The meeting marked an opportunity to look back on a successful decade of results from the ROSAT, ASCA, RXTE and BeppoSAX missions. The two topics covered at the meeting were: (1) x-ray binaries and (2) AGN and the x-ray background. X-ray binaries provide a natural laboratory for probing the extreme environments of black holes and neutron stars. The meeting was organized jointly by ITESRE/CNR and NASA/GSFC, with support from ASI. The meeting itself proved to be very timely and gave an excellent summary of the past discoveries as well as the science challenges awaiting the new missions that would dominate the first decade of the 21st century.
