Book Description
Known internationally for his polished interiors, Juan Pablo Molyneux is a designer who combines aesthetically strict modernism with the comfort and richness of neoclassicism. His attention to detail, his insistence on the finest materials, and his use of elements of fantasy and opulence together create a subtle balance between the different parts of a Molyneux room or the pieces within it, inspiring a sense of calm.
This volume, the first devoted to the New York-based designer's work, presents more than a dozen of his most recent projects, from a Beaux Arts mansion in the heart of Buenos Aires to a Park Avenue penthouse. Superb color photographs illustrate these varied homes, providing a personally guided tour replete with insights into Molyneux's structural strategies and furniture selections. Highlighted are features of ornamentation, geometric floor patterns, and trompe l'oeil, the latter regarded by Molyneux as "a fantasy that provokes reality." Born and educated in Chile, Molyneux also studied classical architecture and Egyptology in Paris. He is at ease with different centuries and cultures, an important asset in this era of global eclecticism. Yet his unique mix of disparate objects-- the eighteenth-century French armchairs, seventeenth-century Florentine tables, and paintings by Picasso and Bacon in the living room of a Palm Beach house being but one example-- is based upon inherent and carefully considered correspondences between them.
While the residences seen here are clearly the properties of an exclusive clientele, Molyneux's fresh, direct, and pragmatic voice turns them into an essential source of inspiration for aspiring home decorators and professional designers. Through author Michael Frank's specific histories of these dramatic interiors-- including Molyneux's own-- and complementary drawings, photographs, and details, MOLYNEUX is the tale of a true love of design.

In Black Ajax, George MacDonald Fraser tells the story of a black man from the United States who nearly became England's champion boxer during the early 19th century. This historical novel is based on the true story of Tom Molineaux, a former slave who won his freedom in a boxing match, then traveled to England, refined his skills, and almost became the first black champ. The story is told by over a dozen witnesses to Molineaux's bouts with the reigning champion, Tom Cribb. Molineaux's trainer recalls the fighter's awe-inspiring strength and speed. A butler who asks to remain anonymous divulges information about the fighter's love affair with an English noblewoman. Molineaux's manager, a former slave and retired boxer, speaks bitterly of his disappointment in the youth for failing to prove to the English that a black man could be as capable a fighter as any white man. Nearly all the witnesses to the first match between the two fighters thought Molineaux lost mainly because the judges gave the white opponent an unfair advantage.
All the characters in this novel speak in 19th-century dialect, and it's diverting to try to decipher their many odd turns of phrase. For those who cannot determine the meanings of words such as "Spike Hotel," "toco," "winker," and "wistycastor" from context, the author provides a glossary at the end of the book. Unfortunately, almost all of the characters seem overly fond of using racial epithets, which draws attention to the shortcomings of this book. The main one is that Tom Molineaux, who undoubtedly was a complex, fascinating character, comes across as a stereotype here: a hulk with not many brains but a lot of sex drive. Although Fraser fails in that respect, this novel does vividly chronicle an intriguing episode in the history of sport and race relations. --Jill Marquis
Book Description
Bringing historical fact spiritedly to life, Fraser tells the rollicking tale of how "the Black Ajax" became as famous a figure in England as Napoleon -- and just as much a threat to its establishment -- before he passed into boxing legend and created a precedent for modern black prizefighters.
Customer Reviews:
Masterful story.......2006-10-30
"Black Ajax" is a fascinating fictionalized history/social commentary/boxing story about the American ex-slave Tom Molineaux who fought the Englishman Tom Cribb for the Championship of the world back in 1810 and 1811. The story is presented in monologues as told by the principal participants to an unnamed fictional biographer/reporter some time after Molineaux's death. Of course, the dialogue and some of the characters are invented (most notably Buck Flashman, the rakish father of MacDonald Fraser's most famous creation), but I was surprised to learn after reading this book that its main incidents and characters were real. George MacDonald Fraser is simply a master storyteller with a jeweler's eye for historical detail who has written yet another masterpiece. In this retelling of the story of Tom Molineaux, it's striking how boxing's seamy template of racial animosities, financial exploitation and pathetic physical ruin isn't just a 20th century story but goes back as far as Regency England, and probably back to the Coliseum. This is a great book. It's too bad the old fellow can't go on writing forever.
Almost...but not quite.......2006-02-28
This book is very good as a stand alone - but if you expect the usual Flashy antics, they are not there. Nevertheless as a canvas of 19th century English boxing, this is first rate.
Tom Bertenshaw
Fine story of a freed-slave boxer in Regency England.......2002-09-03
From the real-life story of the meteoric rise, and subsequent fall of Tom Molineaux, freed slave who comes to England with one purpose alone--to defeat the reigning champ, Tom Cribb. Seen through the eyes of various people who saw him (including, notably, Harry Flashman's father) (Flashman himself gets a brief mention) and who are telling their experiences to an unknown person, presumably an author or writer.
Since Tom's fate is revealed in the prologue, watching Tom's arc, which will bring him achingly close to the top only to fall, is painful. But what makes this book is watching the attitude of those arond him, and the Napoleonic-era society which is delighted to embrace him as a novelty--and to turn against him the instant he becomes a threat or a failure. For all the wine, women and song he is given, the turning point in this book is when the misunderstood Tom realizes he will never be accepted, as a non-white, non-English contender, society and the mob will turn against him the instant he is seen as likely to become the champion.
Fraser, as he showed for the later 19th century in the Flashman books, and as he did for the Edwardian era in Mr. American, shows an intimate knowledge and understanding of Regency England, which is brought to life for our enjoyment.
Brutal and Beautiful.......2000-09-19
Tom Molineaux, ex slave and brawler turned bare knuckle prize fighter, lover and dandy living life to great excess in pre Victorian English high society. This is a true story told from the view point of various people who come into contact with Molineaux on his journey up and down the social ladder. These characters, ranging from a female conquest's butler to the Prince Regent are wonderfully constructed and brought to life by Fraser's gift for the language of the time as already seen in the Flashman Papers. Molineaux is a horribly misunderstood and manipulated character and the story of his rise and fall is both touching and poignant whilst remaining humourous, gripping and brutal. Each person and scene is beautifully constructed, Fraser's passion for the era is obvious. The prologue alone telling the story of a broken down pug on his last legs brings tears to the eye and is worth the price of the book alone.
A recreation, not of the past, but of another present........2000-09-17
In this marvellously original novel Mr. MacDonald Fraser fully deploys his ability to create the very feel of another age in the way he has done humorously in the Flashman novels and seriously in "Mr.American". This book immerses us in the prizefighting world of Regency England but the author does not write of the past, but rather of another present, different to our own, and he makes it live not only though its own speech patterns and slang, but by conveying the values, expectations and cultural norms of the time, as expressed in daily life. There is no overt judgement here of the rights and wrongs of that society, with its acceptance of exploitation, economic, social, sexual and racial, on a scale inconceivable in modern Western Society, and this makes the implicit condemnation all the stronger. This is not a polemic however and one is reminded throughout how basic qualities of human decency, courage and compassion - no less than of greed and cruelty - are unchanging with time. The story - a true one - is complex, exciting and thought-provoking. The technique employed, a series of narratives from different viewpoints and from different observers or participants, none the main character, is an inherently difficult one to pull off successfully, but Mr. MacDonald Fraser manages it brilliantly. Each narrator has his or her own uniquely personal style and many are not reporting - but rather justifying themselves or establishing a personal stake on the basis of recollections that may or may not be totally accurate. The range of characterisation through reminiscence is stunning - from the proudly-conscious sadism of a Louisiana plantation owner, to the cynicism of a wealthy Havana brothel-keeper whom we have first encountered as an innocent and terrified slave girl, to the absolute amorality of the alcohol-sodden Flashman Senior (father of the immortal Harry) to the rough decency of English prize-fighters. The use of period style and slang is masterful. The author has obviously immersed himself in the writings of Pierce Egan (who features in the cast) and many of the pages of "Black Ajax" might indeed go undetected as being of later date if inserted among the chronicles of the original Tom and Jerry, while I am still uncertain whether the contribution of William Hazlitt (who also appears) is an extract from his actual writings or a recreation by Mr.MacDonald Fraser. In summary - a splendid novel. One thirsts for more in similar vein.

Book Description
This volume addresses the question of why issues of rights and democracy have become so central to women's movements in post-transition Latin America. As important actors in the struggle for democracy, women's movements moved from being an oppositional force to one forging new strategies to promote gender justice. The international attention focused on human rights in the 1990s, along with the recognition accorded to women's rights, provided a favorable opportunity for women's movements to advance ideas of inclusive citizenship and to broaden the meaning of rights. The nine country-based chapters assess critically the innovative strategies pursued by Latin American women's movements in their struggle to incorporate rights into the different domains of social and political life. Together they cover a range of countries and political contexts, analyzing specific bodies of rights and campaigns for legal reform:these include rights of political representation, labor rights, reproductive rights, socioeconomic rights, rights and ethnicity, and rights to protection against domestic violence.

Customer Reviews:
Thirties.......2005-04-15
The sophistication and elegance of the 1930-s is wonderfully expressed by Tom Tierney's work. The dolls and costumes are drawn in great detail. One can see the change in style from flowing, soft gowns of the early thirties to the sharper tailoring and increasing extravagance of the late thirties.
Mr Tierney has intentionally drawn the dolls to resemble Gloria Swanson and Joan Crawford (with blonde hair?), which was a great idea as it lends more authenticity to the look of the dolls. However, Gloria Swanson's popularity was already on descent by this time, so I think that another star would have been more suitable to represent the early thirties.
Fun Pictures.......2000-09-19
This book is full of fun and fashionable outfits from the 1930's. They are great to see and gives an exceptional view into top fashions of that era.

..this is an excellent adaptation of a famous Shakespeare play aimed at elementary-aged children (or younger!).......2007-07-14
Reviewed By: Jean Hall - Eclectic Homeschool Online
While I tend to avoid abridged versions of the classics, I am happy to report that this is an excellent adaptation of a famous Shakespeare play aimed at elementary-aged children (or younger!) and their parents. Large print for easy reading and pictures of scenes on most of the facing pages help to make this famous work accessible to younger readers. The illustrations are carefully drawn, showing details of period costume, while retaining the charming simplicity of coloring pages.
Although this is an "edited" version, it is by no means "dumbed-down" or modernized. The author has taken pains to preserve the beauty and poetry of the Bard's original language. Simple, but clear, prose descriptions explain the action taking place in each scene and unusual word usage is explained in footnotes.
This book could be used in several ways: the parent reads to the child or the child reads the book, different family members take on parts and act out the play, or small children color the pictures while hearing the story.
Discussion questions at the end of the book are designed to explore the themes in this work that transcend time and place and help make the play relevant to a modern child's life and times.
Altogether this is an excellent introduction to Shakespeare and a spring-board to further study.

your kids are too smart for this book.......2000-05-11
i find this version too heavily edited, losing all of theemotional nuance and plot twists. with so much summary, the reading isfar too dry, and i will not offer it to children i teach. as a guide for those who want clarification so they can explain scenes to young readers, this book is ok, but again, the guts are missing. i'm quite disturbed by the weak attempt at a multi-cultural cast, as implied by the artwork (p 7). the misguided token gesture loads the story with unfortunate subtext: (stereo)typically the "african-american friend" is killed off. as mercutio, his death is a guilty burden for romeo, and incites the duel that begins romeo's demise. the only other pivotal character of hue is friar john, also african-american, who of course fails to carry the note to romeo that would have explained the plan and spared his and juliet's lives. finally, there is the archaic use of the term "man and wife" regarding r&j (in the accompanying art, he is shirtless while she is draped in cloth). check it out at the library. spend your money on a far better kids version in the Shakespeare Can Be Fun series by Lois Burdett.

Excellent pattern book.......2006-10-19
I have this book and have referred to it many times and have used several of the patterns. There is a nice variety and the patterns cover a broad collection of interests and tastes. Excellent book and a must have in the stained glass studio.
It is Ok but..........2005-07-19
The designs are wonderful;however, they are all in black and white.. I expected more...
great designs abound.......2003-09-14
Not only were there great traditional designs, but I also found some beautiful and unique nature designs which I hadn't seen in other stained glass books and I was definitely pleased. The contemporary designs range from fairly simple to complex, but do not contain patterns that are unrecognizable as some stained glass patterns books do. This book definitely has variety, variety, variety.
A regular source of inspiration for me.......2000-11-22
I have used a good number of the designs presented in this book for my own creations. Lots of contemporary floral designs and some traditional victorian patterns. Projects range from relatively simple to very complex - designs that fit very well in homes as in commercial establishments. I have adapted one design in this book to be placed in a piece of furniture that I created. All is in black and white, no pictures of completed projects.

Book Description
The surest way to ruin a relationship is to marry the man you love. At least thats what Vanella Morris believes. So when Alton, her longtime boyfriend and the love of her life, proposes, Vanella is faced with a dilemma: Unable to convince Alton to skip the vows and just live together, does she walk away from happiness because of her fears, or ignore her commitment concerns and risk the possibility of marital hell on earth?
Customer Reviews:
Promising author!.......2006-12-28
In most love stories, there is a lonely woman looking for love, for a prince in shining armor. If there is a twist, it is that she is a lonely older woman instead of a younger woman, or the woman isn't supernaturally beautiful, or she isn't a perfect size four. Usually, the young, thin woman is just looking for love in all the wrong places. And usually, she finds it, or it finds her, at the train station or walking a dog or while visiting a long lost relative. Every once in a while she finds contentment in being alone, or lost in the hope of all the future shall surely bring.
What I am saying is that these stories get very predictable. I am a romantic, so I always enjoy love stories, but sometimes I am just dying for a twist or turn that I did not expect.
I found what I was looking for in Counting Raindrops Through a Stained Glass Window , the first novel of self-published writer Cherlyn Michaels. The star of the story, Vanella Morris, is a little weight obsessed and oblivious to her obvious neuroses, but the love story is still compelling. She has the love of her life in Alton-- a great, handsome man with whom she has everything in common. And Alton wants to marry her. But Vanella can't say yes.
Vanella does not have a fear of commitment, as a reader might suspect. Instead, Vanella has a fear of marriage. Every marriage she has seen is either is an expressly sorry state, or has long since gone rotten. Vanella can only draw one conclusion: that damn certificate must have some crazy power over people -- the power to send an otherwise happy relationship to the dogs. Vanella wants lifelong commitment, but she wants to avoid that piece of paper that seems to be the root of all matrimonial problems.
The problem? Vanella can't get Alton, or anyone else that she knows, to buy into her theory, and her fear of marriage is about to leave her single again. Between relationship drama, friendship drama, family drama, and work drama, Vanella's plate is full. But it is only when she shovels through it all that she sees what marriage is really about, and why so many relationships go wrong.
I admit that I didn't necessarily like Vanella -- I enjoyed the story, but at first I turned every page just waiting for her to go get some kind of therapy. But more than her irrational relationship theories, I was intrigued by her family, work, and friendship issues -- all of which did affect the way she viewed marriage. I could not deny that Vanella was real, and so were her troubles.
Even better, Michaels sets the story in her own hometown, St. Louis, Missouri, and in Cleveland, Ohio. I appreciate the reality of setting a story in a place other than Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta or D.C. There are other cities with thriving black communities, and it's about time someone wrote about one.
And, as always, I love reading about a black woman who has her act together. Counting Raindrops Through a Stained Glass Window isn't about greed, pettiness, or keeping up with the Joneses. It's about one woman's personal struggle for peace and happiness. And we can all learn something from stories like that.
Isnt Love Grand.......2006-02-22
Counting Raindrops Through a Stained Glass Window, by Cherlyn is an elegant story that centers around and magnifies love in its purest form.
Vanella is a power professional who enjoys her relationship with her fiancé, Alton. There are no doubts that she loves him; it's just that she can't allow herself to commit to saying yes to his marriage proposal. Vanella lives her life and subscribes by a philosophy, which she appropriately labels as the "O" Theory. This theory simply supports love and relationships without the legal documentation to validate the union. In essence, she is apprehensive that once she makes it legal, the relationships will self-destruct.
Alton, on the other hand, is a very hard working and successful man who is totally committed and in love with Vanella. Alton is aware of her theory, but he wants to prove that it can't possibly be right, because his love for her and hers for him will see them through any trials that they may have. After years of dating, Alton wants to take this relationship to the next level, and make Vanella not only his wife but also the mother of his future children.
Packed inside of this novel is not just testing the theory of love, but it also hits on childhood baggage, trust, sisterhood and friendship.
Ms. Michaels provides an insightful view on a relationship that is built on years of stored baggage. As an author and wonderful storyteller, she weaves a romantic tale that is sure to be adorned by many. Not only is this a fantastic love story, it also takes you on an emotional roller coaster along with the supporting cast.
Will Alton's love be enough to put this theory out of its misery? Sit back, grab a nice cup of hot tea, and revel in the words that Ms. Michaels spins into an amazing love story.

But, at the end I shouted Hooray!!!!! But it still got to me a little about Tucker and Robin. This book is a must read.

4.5
Most women dream of having a handsome, successful good loving man ask them for their hand in marriage. Not Miss Vanella Morris. Though she doesn't physically run from the room screaming, she is mentally terrified of the effects she has seen marriage have on a good relationship. Vanella is bound and determined not to become another divorce statistic. Her six year relationship with Alton has been nothing short of fantastic, until Alton tries to ruin things by proposing marriage.
Vanella's dilemma sets in motion this wonderful drama, cleverly disguised as a love story. Cherlyn Michaels novel addresses the issues of a dysfunctional family and its dramatic effects on a woman's perception of marriage. Growing up watching her father verbally and mentally abuse her mother angered Vanella. What confused and irritated her most was the fact that her mother continued to stand by and meekly take whatever her husband dished out. Her father's actions along with Vanella's misguided girlfriends' advice are no help to her situation. Meanwhile Alton waits patiently in wings for Vanella to say yes to his proposal. When she suggests that they live together instead, Alton is devastated.
The most intriguing thing about this book is the way the author plays you as a reader. She sets her characters up to be a certain way and then more than halfway through the book, she flips the script on you. Nothing and almost no one in this book are as they seem to be. This book deals with some hard issues such as abuse, adultery and downright betrayal. It is also about letting go of the past, learning to forgive and giving yourself time to heal. Vanella eventually learns to overcome her fears by evaluating their root cause. The surprises in this book are well worth the read and worth the wait to get there.

A great read.......2005-10-31
I really enjoyed this novel. The writing was tight and the story was very good. I could relate to Vanella and the issues that her and her girlfriends talked about in not wanting to get married. And in the end, I loved the ending. I thought the ending was headed in one direction, but was pleasantly surprised. This was a really good book and I highly recommend it for others.
