Janeanne Narrin's One Degree Beyond is an engaging introduction to Reiki, the rapidly growing art form that has proven to be an avenue for many to alleviate tension, manage stress, and expand powers of perception. Although One Degree Beyond does not claim to be a course in Reiki, it is designed like a textbook, with sidebars and review questions, making it an easy-to-follow guide to discovering Reiki as both a methodology and a life-force energy. Narrin's anecdotes knit together the metaphysical concepts behind Reiki, and offer a glimpse at a new world waiting to be discovered by those willing to explore one degree beyond the apparent boundaries of our lives. --Brian Patterson

    Book Description

There is a an unfolding dynamic cosmology developing around the world. This emerging worldview blends some of the knowledge and discipline of modern science with ancient and time honored spiritual beliefs and practices. One Degree Beyond is an excellent example of how these two complementary areas of inquiry can bring humankind to a new and much needed understanding.

Make no mistake. Although it does put some of the more recent trends in scientific inquiry and research in perspective and does establish that the traditional view, which had science and religion at odds, is outmoded and unnecessary, this is not a book about new science. Rather it is an invitation to a personal exploration with global implications. One key to the development of a new consciousness is Reiki, an ancient approach to healing rediscovered and formalized by a Japanese doctor, Dr. Mikao Usui, during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The tradition established by Dr. Usui continues to this day and Reiki has grown in popularity.

The author of One Degree Beyond, Janeanne Narrin, is a trained Reiki Master of the Usui tradition with over ten years experience as a teacher and practitioner of this simple approach to the relief of pain and suffering. Narrin also has an extensive background in management consulting for large corporations and consequently has wide experience dealing with stress and anxiety in the corporate workplace. She is a an experienced and whole systems-inspired practitioner who presents Reiki, the ancient art of "hands-on" healing, in the wider framework of energy medicine, and proposes not only do we have bodies and minds, but we also partake in and embody the very energies that create the universe, moment by moment a new. One Degree Beyond elucidates the very practical relationship between Reiki and modern scientific thinking, and uses the tools of self inquiry to open new doors of perception.

In inviting readers to explore possibilities, or move beyond what is apparent, Narrin is encouraging us to attempt to focus our thoughts and actions in ways which honor both our personal potentials and our connection to all of the other elements and forces of Nature. Thus, One Degree Beyond is a primer for action. It is gentle and wise, does not proselytize, and one needn't be a Reiki practitioner to derive its benefits. It is full of helpful hints, upbeat suggestions, and engaging exercises to expedite a personal journey into health consciousness and heightened spiritual awareness.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful for Energy Healing!.......2005-09-05

I tried using one of the plant energy experiments on a dead Dogwood tree in our front yard that was killed by lightning over twenty years ago and within four weeks of using the twenty minutes worth of Reiki energy on the dead tree stump, there appeared four new sprouts right beside the stump that were little Dogwood trees.

In the back of the book there is a personal journal for a month worth of your energy healing and journal to learn if you are actually living in the moment being aware and grounded or spending the majority of your day zoned out on other things like daydreaming/ worry Etc...

    3 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2001-05-01

I was so impressed with the reviews that I bought this book, but regret it. The first third of the book is her talking about her personal experiences that led her to Reiki and I was getting impatient for her to focus on Reiki. Although it did become a lot more interesting further along in the book, I have read much better Reiki books which explain how to do it yourself. She focuses on being present in the moment and how to teach yourself to focus on the present which is good, but for someone wanting to learn about Reiki I would not recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully written and designed.......2000-07-19

I love the attention to detail and the beautiful artwork that this book contains. The layout is well done and I find it causes me to be drawn into the text. The exercises are interesting and unique to most Reiki books. Her descriptions make the practice of Reiki easy to understand and the drawings are helpful. The storys add interest and give a refreshing perspective. Certainly a lot of thought has been given to the creation of this very useful Reiki book.

    5 out of 5 stars A path to Reiki.......2000-06-27

After reading and studing this book, I have found that the insights Janeanne Narrin brings, along with the "ways" to learn about, and get into contact with this energy bring to life something we all "know" exists. It allows us to step by step tune in and tune up!..

Good reading, and a better study guide.... much "fuller" than any other I have studied...I recommend highly and am hoping Janeanne creates a sequal ...

5 out of 5 stars Transforming Your Life Through Reiki.......2000-06-27

Having read Janeanne's book from the perspective of a novice in the world of Reiki, I was especially drawn in by her stories of personal transformation. My goal in learning about Reiki is similar: to transform my life through new methods AND new perspectives, which her book helps me do. I would highly recommmend this to anyone who is new to Reiki and is looking for a CONTEXT of Reiki in their life's pursuits.

      Book Description

Treatments and practices derived from scientific medical knowledge have directly benefited most people presently living in the Western world. But this 'orthodox' knowledge is not the only, nor even the major, source of wisdom about health and disease. Elsewhere, scientific medicine is frequently subordinate to traditional medical practices. In Western cultures, people who consult a doctor do so for only a minority of their complaints and many alternative therapies thrive. We all have lay knowledge of health and disease which we use every day. Why then do we hold scientific medical knowledge in such esteem that it lies at the heart of health-care systems?

In this book, medical knowledge comes under scrutiny from an interdisciplinary team of authors that includes sociologists, historians, epidemiologists and human biologists. They begin by examining modern culture and the coexistence of lay beliefs, alternative and complementary therapies, and orthodox scientific views of health and disease. The historical development of medical knowledge is traced in three case studies: on tuberculosis, blood, and hysteria. This journey into the past reveals the profound changes that have taken place in medical knowledge and practice, but also illuminates the rich heritage that has survived in modern medicine. The book concludes by examining the influence of social and cultural factors on the theory and practice of medicine today, the place of ritual, medicine as a mechanism of social control, and factors affecting trust and communication in the relationship between doctor and patient. In so doing, it questions the taken-for-granted status of scientific medical knowledge in Western society.

      Book Description

Understanding Health and Social Care links policy to practice in a tangible way, juxtaposing the voices of care givers and service users with insights from academic debate and research. It is unusual in the way it cuts across the conventional divided between health care and social care. The text is divided into five sections, each of which includes a selection of readings on a particular topic or theme. Although the book is intended primarily as a resource, to be dipped into and used for reference, it can be read section by section, and the section introductions serve as a guide to the reader who wishes to do this. Understanding Health and Social Care has been designed to appeal to a wide range of readers, including students in other health and social care studies, and those interested in care matters, whether as paid workers, volunteers, informal careers, or users of services.

5 out of 5 stars Introduction to the problems faced by Carers and Cared-for.......1998-08-14

What will be the major growth industry of the 21st century? Health and social care? If it isn't, then we're in for trouble. Every indication is that Western society is going to become more and more burdened by the sick, the elderly, the marginal, and the criminal as the century proceeds.

This book provides an excellent introduction to the problems faced: individual chapters, written as first-hand accounts, by people on all sides of the problems (the carers, the cared-for, the politicians). A "must read" for anyone who expects to have to care-for, to be cared-for, or to press for changes in care policy, at any time in the future.

            Book Description

Bringing together key issues in the provision and use of caring services, Health, Welfare, and Practice is an invaluable training resource for health and social work practitioners. Roles and relationships are central themes in this timely volume: their complexity is stressed, as is their relevance to a better understanding of practice. Topics addressed include distinctions between health and welfare occupations, informal helping roles, and different approaches for practitioners to develop sensitivity to diverse experiences and to challenge unfair discriminatory responses, attitudes, and stereotyped assumptions. In addition, Health, Welfare, and Practice offers a unique collection of personal accounts from users and providers of health and social care. "The problem is what to read first. . . . There is meat for the academically-minded alongside telling insights from service users. . . . The emphasis on roles and relationships holds the collection together and frees many of the writers to set aside professional status and use their personal experience to inform the search for better practice." --Health Service Journal "This book has a number of strengths. All of the chapters are brief and well focused. Thus, instructors can assign particular chapters with particular issues in mind. In this way too, many of the chapters stand as excellent vehicles for stimulating class discussion. . . . I think this book has excellent applicability to the education of students of a variety of health and human service occupations." --Disability Studies Quarterly

                  Book Description

Aiming to improve quality in health care and diagnoses, the book discusses information processing and communication in medicine and presents a new approach. By object-oriented analysis, modelling and design the approach enables an evolutionary development according to the needs of the medical environment. Following this approach medical applications are realised using a heterogeneous distributed information management system. This system provides integration and communication of multimedia information for medical services. Concepts, architectures and techniques for realisation are introduced.

``...clear overview by Martin Ohly and the contribution on medical terminology in clinical applications by Dr. Paparoditis. The integrated hospital systems developed in the project and the telemedicine services are well described and there is an interesting (...) account of digital signal processing. ... I ended by feeling more positive about the underlying strengths of the work described and admiring the achievement of delivering such a huge and broad-ranging set of demonstrations in clinical practice. The book is an important record of a major contribution in the evolution of health informatics.' - David Ingram, UCL Medical School, London, UK.
