Book Description
Written in a clear and engaging style, and generously illustrated with superb computer graphics, Introduction to Protein Architecture is a textbook for second and third year undergraduate students and beginning post-graduate students, and will be of interest to all biological and medical scientists whose work touches on proteins. The structures and functions of proteins unlock the secrets inherent in genomes, including the human genome. The emphasis of this book is on protein architecture, on proteins as three-dimensional patterns. A new field, bioinformatics, has grown up around gene and protein sequences and structures. It has captured the interest of many scientists for its intellectual challenges, its potential for useful applications, and promising scope for careers. This book introduces the use of the World Wide Web in bioinformatics. Written by one of the leaders in this field, Introduction to Protein Architecture explains the general characteristics of proteins that underlie the vary great variety of folding patterns observed in nature. For specialists in structural biology, it contains the core of what they need to know. For students and workers in related disciplines undergraduates or beginning graduate students in biology, chemistry, medicine, bioinformatics, and related fields it contains what they will be able to apply to their own work. Topics treated include: Pattern and form in protein structure; The building blocks; The relationship between amino acid sequence and protein structure; Secondary, supersecondary and tertiary structure; Classifications and hierarchies of protein folding patterns; Protein evolution; How proteins change conformation (and why). To suit the needs of courses, each chapter includes recommended reading, lists of useful web sites, traditional exercises, and a new type of exercise called a weblem, for WEB-based probLEM.
Customer Reviews:
A nice introduction to structural biology.......2004-02-12
This book deserves 5 stars on the basis of its color stereo diagrams alone! Well done. I wish I had this book when I was starting out as a graduate student! A very good explanation of structural hierarchy. Plus the book also contains excellent details of structure of proteins belonging to specific families -for ex., antibodies. Even today, for my work, I find it very convenient to look into the book first for some structural information rather than into the PDB databases. And yes, I do have a very good pair of stereo glasses always on hand!
If Frank Lloyd Wright did proteins..........2001-02-01
This is truly a monument to the architecture of proteins: a gorgeous tour of the structures that dwell within us. The "frozen music" of biology is clearly presented in beautiful detail. The computer-generated renderings give pause to anyone who wonders what God was up to when She thought about creating life. Proteins, as represented here, are Her finest efforts. Visually stunning is only the most obvious aspect of this amazing introduction to structural genomics (proteinomics): the systematic study of protein structures. This is a serious graduate level textbook.
The text should be considered for any introductory graduate level course in biochemistry. Beginning with sound chemical principles, the text lays a solid foundation for the concepts of secondary and tertiary structure within protein. The author builds a superstructure from which to view the motifs of cofactor binding domains and active sites in enzymes.
Each chapter concludes with exercises, problems and "weblems". The weblems underscore the fact that structural genomics, a branch of bioinformatics, is a hot topic in the biotech arena. The weblems ask the reader to pursue ideas on the world wide web. The author provides the reader with a wealth of websites ranging from browser plug-in software for viewing crystal structures, to sources of those structures, to sequence alignment servers which will allow the student to do real research. Well thought-out, the weblems posed are useful to the student in exploring the topics of each chapter.
The author sticks to protein architecture avidly, issues of how proteins fold or how structure might be predicted from amino acid sequence are presented to the reader. It is a credit to the author that he does not speculate on these very hot research topics. The bibiliography for each chapter is current to mid-2000.
A student using this text will have greater insight and understanding of the literature of protein structure, folding, and prediction of structure. This book would also be a useful reference to the veteran practitioner, summarizing an early 21st century look at this field.

Book Description
Draw me a star. And the artist drew a star. It was a good star. Draw me a sun, said the star. And the artist drew a sun. And on the artist draws, bringing the world to life picture by beautiful picture until he is spirited across the night sky by a star that shines on all he has made. In Draw Me a Star, Eric Carle celebrates the imagination in all of us with a beguiling story about a young artist who creates a world of light and possibility. A remarkable, quintessentially simple book encompassing Creation, creativity, and the cycle of life within the eternal. -- Kirkus Reviews, pointer review This book will appeal to readers of all ages. An inspired book in every sense of the word. -- School Library Journal A fable about the passage through life and its fullness of possibilities, children will like the cumulative effects of the tale, the creation of the world through paints, and Carle's collages flaring with rainbow hues. --The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books
Customer Reviews:
One of my favorites to read.......2006-05-14
The paintings/illustrations in this book are classic Eric Carle and are actually on a bigger scale than many of his books. They are glorious and beatiful and in his completely unique style.
The story flows really well and can easily be seen as a religious tale. But, like the Chronicles of Narnia, it can be read just as a straightforward story, too.
Yes, the first time you read the story, if you aren't ready for it, the picture of the naked couple will catch you off guard. That isn't the usual fare for a children's book (although potty training books have no problem showing the same thing on children). The drawing is not highly detailed and almost impressionistic. So, if you are worried about that, be sure to preview it before you buy it and read it to your child. If you aren't aware of it, your reaction might only emphasize it more for your child and then they will focus on it, possibly in a way you don't want.
If you like Carle and his style, you'll probably like it, especially the drawings. The story is simple but can lead to discussion with older children about its meanings.
10 Stars for Eric Carle.......2006-01-10
This book is well written and well illustrated. I feel sorry for the children who will be steered away from this story because of closemindedness. The adults seem to really be the ones who are uncomfortable with the illustrations.
Check the book out & judge for yourself. The illustrations are very tasteful and the 'anatomically correct' parts are really not that anatomically correct...at least I've never seen any nudes that look like the illustrations in the book!
A nice new spin on the religious creation stories.......2005-11-12
I'm not a huge fan of Eric Carle's work, nor of religiously-themed books written for small children... But this charming, colorful (and refreshingly nondenominational) 1992 picture book strikes a nice balance, and is one of Carle's simplest, most visually appealing children's books. In an interesting twist on the creation story, Carle casts the god-figure as an artist, first as an infant, asked to draw a star, then as a lad swiftly maturing into a teen, a young man, and finally into a wizened, flowing-beard style diety, who flies away into the heavens with the very stars he created, after having drawn man, woman, and the world they inhabit. One aspect of the book -- that someone was there to ask "The Artist" to draw all these things -- raises some interesting theological questions, but the central message of celebrating art and the world around is, is uncomplicated and welcome. Worth checking out, as long as you're not militantly agnostic or atheistic.
Draw Me a Star.......2005-09-30
Disappointed w/Eric Carle. This is a wonderful story, but the illustration of the man and the woman are not appropriate for our second grade classroom. This book goes well with a Marilyn Burns math lesson , but we were unhappy with the book's illustration.
some people are ignorant.......2005-05-26
i heard people saying this book was borderline pornography. so i guess when you go to classic art museums and you see the body of a nude person it's porno. america is very ignorant for that stuff being so contraversial. if you go to european countries there are elementary children taking field trips to museums with completely exposed nude bodies and there is nothing wrong with it. it doesnt mean these kids are going to grow up with perverted minds. maybe if a a naked body wasnt made out to be such a dirty thing, children wouldnt care so much.

Customer Reviews:
Well............2006-06-17
This book is good,it teaches you how to draw a horse head, but not a horse.....It teaches you to draw lots of diffrent heads and expressions. When she is done she shades it .But does not teach you how, well she does but it is not step by step.It is like a huge step.
[...]
Not ANYONE can do it.Then she says to do SCRIBLES to draw a horse body, huh???A very deteiled head with a ¨Scribled Body¨that is not good! I like most of the book ,just that sometimes she jumps big steps, well too big for us!
Well go ahead and buy it it is not bad, teachs you lots of things, but a body....
What a GREAT start for the budding artist!.......2006-03-13
As the mother of an art student, this book totally broke through the obstacles my daughter was having with her beloved horse hobby. They say artist have the most trouble drawing the things they love the most, but the step-by-step instructions assisted my daughter to break out of her barrier. She uses the basic techniques to help her with her 3D work as well! Thank you!
Practice makes perfect!.......2005-09-30
This book is really good to learn from! I traced a few horse heads, then practiced free hand, and it came out really good! WHen I went onto a body, she drew a bunch of circles, and I was surprised, but I tried it-- it came out so good!! Ofcourse it took practice, but once you clean up the picture, shade it and add a saddle, you'd think this was a real peice of art in a gallery!! I really recomend this book!
Deserves Just That........2005-01-10
I will admit. This is good for teaching you how to draw horse heads. At least the first set of instructions is. I was exicited and thought this would be a great book when I went and drew an excellent, realistic picture of a horse head. I was aiming for arabian but got quarter horse, but I didnt care. It looked great. So I wanted to go on to bodies. And guess what I found Scribbles. Yes, scribbles. She just drew a bunch of circles, saying to go with the energy that you feel. I ddin't bother, and went on to draw another horse head using a different set of instructions I was so disapointed when I was done. The horse looked like something a 9 year old would draw if they grabbed the book. I looked back to the other picture. The other one was in a ocmpleately different class. After this, I tried to draw asaddles and bridles. But they didn't tell you how to draw them. They shpwed pictures of say, a racing saddle, and said trace this onto a horse you previously drew. I wouldn't request buying this book.
Book Description
Cultural Writing. Art. WHY DRAW A LANDSCAPE talks about the relationship of the self to the real world, and looks at different approaches to landscape by eleven painters and sculptors whose styles ranges from Realist to Conceptual. This book follows Kathan Brown's well-received WHY DRAW A LIVE MODEL? (also available from SPD) about which Artforum's Bookforum commented "The next best thing to being there." And from Contemporary Impressions: "Brown's style feels like a conversation with a friend." Includes 83 color plates.
Customer Reviews:
Words from one who understands.......2005-12-08
Kathan Brown has long been a champion of art, both in writing and in production: her Crown Point Press in San Francisco was founded in 1962 as has served as a resting place where artists can be 'in residence' to work with the outstanding staff of craftsman to create new ideas in etching and monoprint form from their busy careers of painting and drawing. In this excellent book Brown discusses the work of eleven artists whose preoccupation with the landscape provoked conversations with Brown that lead to this penetrating and wise interaction of ideas lightly titled WHY DRAW A LANDSCAPE?
The artists with whom Brown has a working relationship at the Press include Jane Freilicher, Sylvia Plimack Mangold, April Gornik, Pat Steir, Joan Nelson, Anne Appleby, Edward Ruscha, Robert Bechtle, Tom Marioni, Bryan Hunt, and David Nash. And is ever there were more disparate views of observing and drawing the landscape than this group of artists represents, it has not been the subject of writing. Brown writes with skill and wit and a natural warmth. In responding to the works of these artists and their views of the land, Brown states 'Irony may be on the way out as the darling of the art world avant-garde agenda', and few writers can state such a fact with quiet sensitivity better than Kathan Brown. This book is a fine adjunct to those who elect to investigate representational art and landscape art in particular. Grady Harp, December 05
