4 out of 5 stars Great info on horses but the title is misleading.......2007-04-18

This book was packed with great information on horse facilities but it was not the information I needed. I was looking for a book on managing a truly small horse property (mine is 4/5s of an acre) so I have to agree with those who comment that the "small acreages" in this book are not small at all, especially not to someone in Califonia. An acre here is considered "horse property" since most Californians owning much more land than that are probably millionaires (unless in the desert.) True, there was a plan or two that could work on an acre but the info I truly needed, info unique to such a small area, was not in this book. We Californians need advice on how to manage manure in a small area with neighbors on all sides and what about the turnout area, which obviously is not going to support the growth of any grasses. The barns and buildings in the book are way too large and extravagent for the average small horse property here. There are many problems unique to truly small horse properties but this book doesn't really address them.

5 out of 5 stars This is the book for a newby.......2007-02-18

This book goes over basically every detail that I can think of that would help to begin a horse farm or just having one horse. It covers everything from buying land, thinking about the neighbors to drainage and barns. Cherry covers it all in detail and it is very well explained. If you get one book on this topic this should be it!

5 out of 5 stars If you only buy one barn book, buy this one!.......2005-04-20

Even if you already have a barn orr board your horses somewhere, this is a great book to read. There is information about how horse behaviour affects taking care of them, and tons of information about stable management. There are many helpful charts comparing types of stall floorings, etc. In response to a previous reviewer's comment that there are not any plans for an acre of half acre of land, that is incorrect. There is a sample layout, where the pastures are, where the house is, where the barn is, for a a 1/2 acre piece of land, and one for a 1-acre pice of land on pages 72 and 73. There is tons of information on land, fencing, equipment, care, etc.

5 out of 5 stars A wealth of Information.......2004-12-29

Since I have bought this book I have read it everytime I have a free minute. I have been working i the horse industry for many years now and am thinking of starting my own horse business. Although as I read the first half of the book I realise that I already know a lot of the information, there are still certain points that are new to me. It is an excellent resource of information for anybody thinking of starting a small horse business, and in particular to those people who have not worked extensively in the horse industry. For people who already have knowledge of the horse industry there is a wealth of information on the business side of running a farm and also for pitfalls to watch out for. This book has further inspired me to follow my dream of having my own horse business on my own land.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2004-02-24

I just received this book and I skimmed through it briefly, and I'm already thrilled that I bought it. It has excellent examples, charts comparing different things/cost/durability...

I'm planning on building my own barn in the next 5 years or so, and this book will help me tremendously!

Highly Recommended!

in a well cross referenced format. It is easy to find what you need in a hurry. It is very detailed with just enough physiology and anatomy for the details to make sense. I used it during my last whelping and found it very useful. It was also useful for breeding timing and care of newborn pups.

This is a good book that covers a wide range of subjects in aclear & concise manner. The beginner will learn a lot and the more advanced reader will still benefit from reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive book for Dog Breeders.......2006-02-23

I have many books on dog breeding on my shelves. This one is different in several ways. It is written in textbook fashion with a FAQ section at the front of and a "Test your understanding" quiz at the end of each chapter. It uses color photographs to show you what the author is talking about when describing specific conditions or situations. It is written in laymans language making it easy to understand and yet it is comprehensive enough for the long time breeder to learn something new.

The author has the educational and practical credentials required to write this type of book and uses a style of writing that's easy to read without being condescending.

In my opinion this book is a must have for any dog breeder and I strongly recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars Shoddy, At Best.......2001-06-09

I must say that, initially, I was quite excited to have finally found a (seemingly) informative text about small animal care in my college book-store. After further reading, however, and in all honesty, I could not have been more disappointed with the so-called 'up-to-date' material that was presented in this book.

As an animal health care specialist and Veterinary student at the Ohio State University, I have been studying small animals for most of my life, and it was the section on birds in Dean Warren's publication that was most alarming to me. He suggests first of all that the only toys which can be provided within a large parrot's cage are bells which can safely be strung up, while anything else would surely be destroyed. This is true, although Warren forgets to mention that most birds enjoy destroying things, and they should be provided as many 'destructible' objects as possible (as long as none of the shredded pieces contain harmful parts that might injure the bird internally, and are promptly removed anyhow) to keep the bird stimulated and happy. We come next to the section on bird feeding, wherein a diet of seeds only has been suggested by the author. Even though he seems to imply that the seed diet should 'vary', it has long been established that an all-seed diet is more detrimental to domestic birds than beneficial. Birds should instead be fed a diet that is at least 74-80% pelleted material, which should often be supplemented with fruits, veggies, and perhaps even a bug or two every once in a while. Oily seeds especially need to be avoided, uinless they are offered as treats, because of their high fat content. The author also stresses that a supply of grit be offered to domestic birds at all times, to aid them in digesting their food. This, also, could not be further from the truth. Most of us certainly do not feed our dogs raw meat on a regular basis simply because their wild relatives eat it often in the wild. Similarly, domestic birds need be provided with absolutely no grit at all; in most cases they are not the same as wild birds, and grit has been shown to remove several beneficial vitamins from birds' systems (among them Vitamin A). The canary and finch, however, can tolerate a small amount of grit in their diets every few months.

Sadly, there was a good deal more misleading information in this book, including the out-dated notion that a cat's paws should be physically dragged across its scratching post to teach her to use it, though this will only teach most cats (who may not enjoy having their paws handled in this way) to avoid the object in question; the ridiculous statement that rats have 'bad qualities and characteristics' after a short discussion on their destructive history, although today's domestic rats are among the friendliest and most intelligent creatures; and the statement in the Animal Rights/Welfare section that there is no proof of a vegetarian diet being healthier than that of those of us who eat meat. I may not be a vegetarian, but just as there has been proof that eating meat is healthy for the human diet, just as many studies have shown that vegetarian and vegan diets might also be just as beneficial.

All of this, coupled with more than a few spelling mistakes and grammatical errors, make this a shoddy piece of work at best. The book does have beautiful photographs, but I would not recommend this title to anyone considering any sort of career in animal health.

An authoritative, avian-medical-reference text is a must-have for every responsible bird keeper, regardless if they simply share their home with a finch, a budgie, or another companion-parrot, or if they house and breed a flock of aviary birds. Dr. Michael J. Cannon has authored just such a text, A Guide to Basic Health and Disease in Birds (Revised Edition).
A Guide to Basic Health and Disease in Birds has become my primary reference text whenever a question arises regarding any of my parrots' well-being.

          Book Description

Extragalactic radio sources are among the most unusual and spectacular objects in the universe, with sizes in excess of millions of light years, radiated energies over ten times those of normal galaxies, and a unique morphology. They reveal some of the most dramatic physical events ever seen and provide essential clues to the basic evolutionary tracks followed by all galaxies and groups of galaxies.

In The Physics of Extragalactic Radio Sources, David De Young provides a clearly written overview of what is currently known about these objects. A unique feature of the book is De Young's emphasis on the physical processes associated with extragalactic radio sources: their evolution, their environment, and their use as probes to solve other astrophysical problems. He also makes extensive use of the large amount of data now available from observations at x-ray, optical, and radio wavelengths to illustrate his main points.
The Physics of Extragalactic Radio Sources will be a comprehensive introduction to the field for graduate students and a useful summary for astrophysicists.

            Book Description

The physics of active galactic nuclei, the origin of extragalactic jets and the formation of extended extragalactic radio sources are among the most interesting challenges of modern astrophysics. This book contains the proceedings of the seventh meeting of the Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris, which drew together both theorists and observers in this exciting field. Recent observational data at X-ray, optical and radio wavelengths is discussed and new theoretical developments concerning beam and jet formation models are considered. Special treatment is given to plasma physics problems related to particle acceleration, magnetic reconnection, beam-plasma interaction and coherent emission. The volume will be of use to all students and researchers who are working in this field.

                Book Description

On the 100th anniversary of Marconi's successful experiment on radio broadcasting, 250 astronomers from all over the world met in Bologna (Italy) for five days, to update their knowledge of the physics and statistical properties of powerful extragalactic radio sources.
Since their discovery in the fifties enormous progress has been made. The existence of superluminal motions in the cores of radio sources, the presence there of a black hole surrounded by an absorbing dust torus, as inferred mostly from studies at other wavelengths, are now accepted ideas.
Nevertheless, in spite of these efforts, there are many questions still unanswered. For instance we do not know which mechanism produces the huge amount of energy supplied to radio sources, how the jets connecting the `engine' to the lobes are formed and collimated, which of the differences observed among the various classes of radio sources are apparent and which are real.
These and other related topics are discussed in this book.

                      Product Description

Radio astronomy is the study of radio waves from space. Many objects in the universe, including certain stars, galaxies, and nebulae, as well as a wide variety of peculiar, fascinating, and often mysterious objects, emit radio waves through naturally occurring processes. Radio astronomers use large antennas, known as radio telescopes, together with very sensitive radio receivers to detect the prescence of the waves, and our book is about the findings of this young, twentieth-century science. Included are over 100 illustrations. UNITS INCLUDE: 1)The Adventure of Radio Astronomy - What is it?; The Exploration of the Radio Astronomical Unknown; Electromagnetic Spectrum; Radio Telescopes; How Radio Waves from Space are Generated; Radio Spectra; Position Measurement; Seeking Knowledge. 2) Extragalactic Radio Sources - Quasars; Radio Galaxies; Cosmic Jets, Black Holes and Cannibalism; Radio Galaxies and Quasars. 3) The Milky Way - The Galactic Center; The Mily Way Radio Beacon; The Galactic Radio Nebulae; Interstellar Hydrogen; Interstellar Molecules. 4) Stellar-Type Radio Sources - Pulsars; Radio Sun and Planets; Galactic Superstars. 5) The Universe and Life - Beyond the Quasars-Radio Cosmology; On the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. 6) Radio Asronomy Review - Musings on the Evolution of a Science; Radio Telescopes-The present; The Future.

                        Book Description

The existence of jets emanating from the central sources of radio galaxies and quasars was perhaps the most important discovery for our understanding of the nature of active galactic nuclei. These proceedings present reviews and research papers on extragalactic radio sources. The book begins with a discussion of the phenomenology and models of radio sources. The main part is devoted to detailed studies of jets by VLBI, to the information obtained about the structure of the central source as deduced from variability studies, to production, confinement and velocity of jets as well as to numerical simulations of the jet phenomenon. Reviews of the two best studied jets - those in the radio galaxy M87 and the quasar 3C273 - illustrate our current observational picture of extragalactic radio jets in all accessible wavelength ranges. A section on the influence of the environment on radio galaxies concludes the book. This topical volume addresses researchers and graduate students in astrophysics.
