Heal Beyond Symptoms.......2005-10-27
Lesley Tierra's book is a refreshing look at the old system of energetic herbology. While many herbals focus on healing the ailments, this book introduces the concept of healing the energy imbalance. As such, it is not a reference book for a quick fix. It teaches a different philosophy for using herbs.
Western medicine once used such a concept as the equilibrium between humors. In "Healing with the Herbs of Life", the author uses the Chinese energetic system. She explains why an energetic approach to healing with herbs is more efficient than the ones dealing with symptoms.
This is a very useful book for curious amateur or professional herbalists and energy healing students:
Part 1 deals with herbal fundamentals such as herb chemistry, energy and a materia medica (dictionary of herbs) of 148 herbs from all over the world.
Part 2 discusses the energetic causes of illness, its energy, the process of healing according to the chinese five elements system and a compendium of specific conditions to treat with herbs, always in an energetic perspective and with general guidelines that may apply (keeping in mind that every ill person is different).
Part 3 deals with the energy of food, living with the seasons, herbal preparations.
There is also a complete appendice of resources, bibliography and glossary. An index to identify the names of herbs in their common names, latin names, chinese name and sanskrit name is included at the end.
Completely worth its price since it is so well done and complete.
The best book on herbal healing by far!!.......2003-10-03
This is a vastly revised 2nd edition. Anyone perusing the numbers of herbs books available on the market should notice at least two shortcomings: 1. They are not written by practicing clinical herbalists and so they often just pass on 2nd and 3rd hand information 2. They are not wholistic in the sense that they do not integrate diet, lifestyle and the many other factors necessary for a successful therapeutic result. Then there is the current wave of herb books written by inexperienced medical authorities with little or not practical experience in the clinical herbal medicine. Most of these are practically useless.
None of this is true of the latest of edition of this Lesley Tierra's Healing with The Herbs of Life. This book offers the rare opportunity to participate in the herbal healing strategies of one of the world's foremost practicing herbalists with over 20 years clinical experience. Integrating Western and Chinese energetics, it is an excellent source for self healing useful for both the lay person and the professional practitioner.
When the qualities and energetics of diet and lifestyle are appropriately adjusted, herbs offer the most time-honored and effective way for treating the underlying causes of disease rather than merely the outer symptoms. With chapters on "Causes of disease," The Energy of Illness," "The process of Healing," Treatment of Specific conditions" along with other chapters on the "Energy of Food," "Living with the Seasons." The reader is fully empowered in the process of herbal medicine.
This is not simply another herb book with a catalogue of herbs and common indications but allows for a much needed personalized approach to herbal healing.
Another thing the reader will appreciate is that the book is well organized and well written making it all the more enjoyable and useful.
You will not regret owning a copy of this book.
The reader might check out the author's other unique book for kid's, appropriately called The Kid's Herbal.
Book Description
This fabulously illustrated full color book takes a fresh approach to the subject of herbal medicine, exploring the subtler properties of herbs such as their abilitiy to soothe our soul and heal our spirit.

A GOOD BEGINNER'S BOOK.......2001-11-29
As one who has used herbs for over thirty years, I am a strong believer in their power to heal providing one first learns which herbs to use, how much, and how herbs can interact with each other. Just as the medications your doctor prescribes, herbs in the wrong combination can react with each other causing some unpleasant and sometimes dangerous side effects. However, for one who is inexperienced in this area, this book is an excellent starting point to at least become acquainted with herbs in general and their use. The one downside I did find with the book is that it was far too short and incomplete. Herbs are often referred to under different names, but there are many herbs that I could not find listed here under any name. This book is a great starting point; however, anyone not experienced with herbs and their uses may want to check with their health care provider before attempting to "prescribe their own alternative medicine." Herbs have a valid use but only if the correct herb, or combinaion of herbs, is used and the doseage is right for you.
an informative, beautifully illustrated guide.......2001-10-20
I found "Herbs for the Soul" to be a very helpful guide to understanding different herbs and the healing powers they possess. The author has organized her book clearly into separate categories (relaxation, stimulation, etc.). This allowed me to compare different herbs that contain related potencies, and discover which ones might work well together. The descriptions also explain how the herbs work on the body and warns of possible interactions. She takes care to inform the reader about the history of an herb in its use in Western or Chinese treatments, and of herbal science in general. Last but not least, the book is illustrated with artistic photographs of herbs and herbal preparations. All in all this is an excellent book for understanding herbs for both the novice and the more experienced health seeker.

User-Friendly guidebook for self-healing with Chinese herbs.......1999-10-24
I would recommend this book highly to anyone who has a serious interest in the beneficial aspects of Chinese medicine on their health. A curiousity of Chinese herbology will be satisfied by the easy to understand explanations of the properties of herbs, their uses, & Simple Remedies. The descriptions of Chinese Herbal Patent Medicines and Chinese Herbal Diet, and explanation of the causes of Disease round out the whole picture, serving to educate the reader in a manner not witnessed in most Western health/diet literature. Lastly, this is a good resource guide & organized well to take along shopping. Lesley's "The Herbs of Life" is a great companion to this. I purchased it several years ago & refer to it over & over again. Enjoy!

Book Description
Herbal medicine has been practiced for thousands of years in China where it is held in equal esteem with acupuncture and Western medicine. Recent evidence suggests that certain drugs taken in their unrefined state, and in accordance with the laws of traditional Chinese medicine, are vastly more effective than synthetic medicines used in the West. This comprehensive guide to the Chinese herbal healing arts includes history, diagnosis, a pharmacopia, and methods of preparation.
Book Description
For the past ten years, Andy Rosenfarb has successfully used acupuncture and Chinese medicine to treat a wide range of eye conditions. His treatments include moxibustion techniques, tuina (massage), microcurrent stimulation, Chinese herbs, and qigong exercises, along with “essential acupuncture” where essential oils are placed on acupuncture points. The culmination of his work—which includes a recent pioneering study involving metabolic testing–is this handbook for healing the kinds of conditions too often considered almost impossibly challenging or irreversible.
The first half of Healing Your Eyes with Chinese Medicine explains Traditional Chinese Medicine and its perspective on the eyes, which is based on the idea that the eyes and the brain work in tandem, not isolation. The second half focuses on proven methods derived from Rosenfarb’s practice, including nutritional, supplemental, and lifestyle adjustments. Individual chapters cover eye disorders such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, and many more. This book is intended as a practical manual to help readers understand their eyes and vision more comprehensively, and to learn new, affordable ways for retaining the precious gift of sight.
Customer Reviews:
Wish I had read this book in acupuncture school...........2007-07-22
Another reviewer wrote that this book is not geared towards practitioners, I disagree as I was able to immediately use much of the information in my clinic.
I graduated from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in 2002 and have been fortunate to operate an extremely busy Chinese Medicine practice since early 2003. I also participate in NIH funded research on Chinese Medicine through UMDNJ (University of Medicine and Dentistry, NJ). Over 90% of my patients are "medical throw-aways" who come to Chinese Medicine as a last resort after conventional medicine has failed. A significant percentage of these patients have been those with degenerative eye disorders.
After reading Andy's book on eye and vision disorders, I feel that this book should be a required text in modern acupuncture schools. When I was in school there were no books devoted to the exclusive practice of Chinese opthamology within a modern clinical setting. What little material I read on Chinese opthamology was isolated to theory and pattern discrimination...and of limited help in real world practice. If I had read this book four years ago when I started my practice, I would have had a greater success rate with my opthamology patients.
The information in this book reveals why Andy is considered by other acupuncturists to be a leading authority on traditional Chinese opthamology. This book is clearly a labor of love as he gives away many of the "secrets" that he has learned from specializing in eye disorders for the past 10 years. Any acupuncturist looking to specialize in eye disorders needs to read this book. There is a detailed explanation of Chinese meridian theory and how each elemental pair relates to treating certain eye disorders, and even after years of working as a professional acupuncturist I was able to find new information in this section. Yet what makes this book different from conventional text books is the conversational style of teaching that the author has, and the large amount of "real world" information presented that is only available from someone who has experienced plenty of success (as well as early failures) in his field.
For example, the book integrates Western and Eastern medical theories by breaking down the different part of the eye into their five element classifications (ie: sclera=metal, macula=water) and how specific western diagnoses of eye disorders such as age-related macular degeneration can be treated using traditional zhang-fu and meridian theory. His categorization of various opthamological diseases into five-element theory is then used to explain how the most common Chinese herbal formulas can be used to treat different disorders such as diabetic retinopathy and myopia. Additionally, there is information on the use of self-care exercises for the eyes, a unique explanation of essential oil therapy using Chinese theories, micro-current stimulation, and an explanation of how modern visual acuity tests can be integrated into a Chinese Medicine practice. Most of the above information I have not found in other texts.
As an acupuncturist I found this book to be a goldmine of clinical information for my practice. But if you are suffering from degenerative vision loss and are looking for alternative treatments, I feel that this book would be an excellent start to learn more about natural methods for healing the eyes. I have treated many patients with degenerative eye disorders and I know how terrifying the experience can be...but there is hope if you remain persistent in your search and keep an open mind. Knowledge and understanding will always overcome fear, and this book will give you a new level of understanding if you suffer from vision loss. Admittedly, there may be some parts of the book that might be difficult for the lay person to understand. The information has not been watered down and the author assumes that you have an intense interest in the subject. You will have to read the theory section in the first few chapters several times to be able to understand the more detailed information in the second half of the book, but this is to be expected as Chinese Medicine is a vast subject that takes many years to grasp.
Bottom line: Highly recommended for both clinicians and patients. Five Stars!!!
Excellent book for patients and practitioners alike.......2007-07-11
This book is written in a way that both patients and practitioners alike will be able to get a lot out of it. The layout is clear, and it is very readable.
I was drawn into the book from the beginning. Even though I am very well acquainted with the basics of Chinese medicine and the organ functions, they are presented an a different context in this book. Everything is given within the context of the eyes and eye diseases. This allowed me to take the knowledge that I had on treatment principles in general, and apply it to eye patterns.
Perhaps the most outstanding aspect of the book is the holistic approach presented to working on eye diseases. There is information on lifestyle, eye exercises, qigong, herbs, acupressure, acupuncture, essential oils, magnets, and moxibustion. All of this information can be used by practitioners to improve their ability to treat eye problems. More importantly, it is written in a way that the patient can go home and do eye exercises, qigong, acupressure, or any of the other home treatment modalities presented in this book to further their eye health.
Overall an excellent book.
A Must Have Book for Practitioners.......2007-07-10
This book helped to fill the gap of this specialty. Andy gave descriptions of terms I have never heard of before that allowed me to appreciate it even more instead of hearing all the same 'ole boring descriptions/definitions that many others use or copy from other books.
The chapters were well organized and well suited for the beginner who wants to understand the organ functions pertaining to Chinese medicine and how a practitioner will treat eye disorders.
I now know what "snail-shell moxa" is by the pictures in the book.
Relating the western diagnosis to Chinese medical terms make this book useful and important to the practitioner as well as the authors own clinical experience he shares in this book.
I think anyone interested in vision health whether you are a practitioner or layperson will greatly benefit from this book.
Hope for the blind.......2007-07-08
It's great what Andy is doing with TCM in the treatment of eye disorders, but the book is another story. It is not really geared to practitioners so he doesn't go into any detail regarding his system of "micro-acupuncture". On the other hand he gives formula names, herbs, and dosages which are great for a student of acupuncture. He also gives unique info on the use of essential oils.

Not sure why it's out of print or the food cures book sells better, because this book is much better- maybe just the title wasn't as good. I hope it comes back into print - I have a copy but I'd love for other people to be able to get it.

Book Description
A Photographic Tour of the Universe presents over 250 new images from space, drawn from space agencies (NASA and the European Space Agency) and by other renowned observatories. Each photograph is accompanied by an extensive caption that points out the important details in the image and summarizes the techniques and exposure times used to make the photographs. As we proceed through the text, which covers our solar system, the stars, the nebulae, the near galaxies, and, finally, the distant galaxies, we learn how astronomers have interpreted what they have seen and how the new images have changed what we know about the cosmos. Recent photos form the Hubble, for example, have shown the "signature" of black holes -- objects so massive and dense that not even light can escape their gravitational pull. Other images taken recently are remarkable for their high resolution and extraordinary beauty, such as those revealing the famous Horsehead Nebula. The book includes an introduction by Richard M. West of the European Southern Observatory.
Customer Reviews:
A Basic, Well Balanced Introduction To The Universe.......2000-02-21
Like the previous reviewer, I purchased this book mainly to look at some Hubble photographs. Unlike the previous reviewer, I found much more to like about it. Photos provided are not just from Hubble but from a variety of different ground-based and orbiting telescopes. Some are rather dated, many are indeed beautiful, and ALL of them are interesting to look at. And each one is accompanied by often detailed descriptions of their content and on how the photos were taken; whether from visible light, infrared, or x-ray telescopes.
The book's topics proceed logically from a brief, illustrated history of astrophotography; through a tour of our solar system; through a description of different types of stars, nebulas, and star clusters; through our Milky Way and beyond to distant galaxies; and finally to glimpses of the more distant parts of our universe courtesy of the Hubble Telescope.
Though there are no ground breaking revelations here, I think there is a nice balance between the number and type of photographs provided and the volume of accompanying text. I've taken some astronomy courses and I think this book gives a straight forward, easy yet interesting introduction to our universe. Looking at the pictures is nice, but its also nice to read about what we are looking at and why they are important. Each section is also laced with a little history about how scientists and philosophers interpreted what they saw using the tools of their day.
Overall, a fun book. Highly recommended!
Great pictures, some computer enhanced - too many words........1998-03-09
Hoping to see more pictures from Hubble telescope, and less about the Hubble. Some pictures were outstanding. Some not very new. Some really good pictures may have been computer enhanced - difficult to tell sometimes. Overall a fair but disappointing book. Too much reading (words).
