The Complete Idiot's Guide(R) to T'ai Chi
Bill Douglas Manufacturer: Alpha ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Accessories: ASIN: 0028629094 |
Amazon.com
T'ai Chi is a 2,000-year-old Chinese martial art that is becoming an increasingly popular exercise trend in the U.S. Its appeal is in its calming, destressing, and energy-boosting qualities. It also improves balance, coordination, strength, and flexibility, and is credited with many health benefits, such as lowering blood pressure. Author Bill Douglas has studied T'ai Chi and QiGong for 20 years and teaches at colleges, medical universities, and corporations. He describes the myriad benefits, how to prepare for your first T'ai Chi experience, its different styles, and how and where to practice. Douglas presents 64 T'ai Chi movements in photographs and instructions. Recurring boxes give tips for living the principles, definitions of Chinese terms, special cautions, and anecdotes. The difference between T'ai Chi and QiGong is not clearly explained, however: "T'ai Chi's goal of relaxing the mind and body to encourage the flow of energy through us makes it QiGong. However, not all QiGong is T'ai Chi." Then he tells us to "forget about it" because the differences will become obvious as you learn the exercises.Douglas admits that no book is a substitute for a live class with a live teacher: "The ability to see an instructor move and to ask for clarification or hear the questions of other students is invaluable. Also, it's easier in person for instructors to explain things in stages while you relax, whereas when using a book, facts must be remembered because the instructor isn't there to remind you." Still, this book is a useful introduction to the principles of T'ai Chi and QiGong, and an interesting supplement to what you'll learn in a class. --Joan Price

The complete Idiot's Guide to T'ai Chi & QiGong gives you step-by-step ways to incorporate a T'ai Chi program into your life at home and at work.

The Dreaming Universe: A Mind-Expanding Journey Into the Realm Where Psyche and Physics Meet

ASIN: 0684801590 |
Book Description
In The Dreaming Universe author Fred Alan Wolf examines the psychological and scientific elements of this most personal yet most enigmatic of human processes. By linking research ranging from the ancient Greek "dream temples" and modern experiments in telepathy, REM, and lucid dreaming to his own research on human consciousness, he theorizes that dreaming is the basis for consciousness, and that it is through dreaming that we are able to manifest a sense of ourselves.

The harmony of the spheres..........2004-01-16
Astronomy is a very visual science, and this book takes full advantage of the many photographs returned by the Hubble telescope, planetary probe expeditions, and first-class telescopic images from around the world. It presents graphics, charts, and images of non-visual spectrum data in easy to understand formats.
The first section is entitled 'The Celestial Clockwork' -- here Abell looks at the history of astronomy (which is intimately woven into the history of timekeeping, both in terms of hours of the day as well as seasons of change), then introduces some broad concepts such as gravitation and star movements. This section also looks at eclipses, anticipating the later section on earth and moon.
The second part looks at 'Radiation from Space' -- this actually means, what can we see from space? Abell is not talking about harmful radiation here, but rather the light and other electromagnetic signals we get from stars, planetary bodies, celestial objects, and even the background radiation in the universe, which is likely the signature of the Big Bang. Abell also looks at observation devices -- optical telescopes, radio telescopes, and space-platform and probe observation devices.
The third section deals with the Realm of the Planets -- earth and moon; the terrestrial planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars); the Jovian planets (the gaseous giants of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, and the ambiguous Pluto, as well as addressing the question of further planets); the various other bodies (debris, Abell terms them) in the solar system, such as asteroids, comets, solar atmosphere; finally, Abell discusses theories of the origin of the solar system and general properties of all planets.
The fourth section goes further afield into the Realm of the Stars. Abell investigates the motion and distance of stars, the aspects and properties of starlight (visual and extra-visual spectrum), properties of stars, general distribution, and finally takes the opportunity to look at the possibility of life on planets around other stars.
The fifth section is in many ways a continuation of the fourth, dealing with the Life Cycle of Stars. In addition to looking at the general pattern of the evolution of stars and the differing fates of stars, from nebulae and initial accretion to middle age to the destruction as dwarf stars, pulsars, neutron stars or even black holes, Abell looks at the theories of relativity (both special and general) and the implications that stars' gravitation have on the universe and on themselves.
The final section deals with galactic astronomy and large-scale cosmology, the overall structure of the universe. The different types of galaxies are introduced and examined (spiral, bar, elliptical, irregular), as well as quasars and inter-galactic matter. The structure of the universe is examined in clusters and superclusters of galaxies, and finally the book concludes looking at the Big Bang theory, the current reigning theory of universal origin and expansion.
The appendices include a wealth of data, including star maps, data about planets, stars, and galaxies, information about eclipses, and various charts of mathematical and chemical data relating to astronomy.
Abell introduces each subject in a very easy-to-read way, incorporating the history and the personalities behind astronomy at every turn. This is a text for the mathematically phobic person to learn astronomy from, as well as those who want a general overview, or a good solid introduction before expanding the study into the more technical aspects of astronomy and astrophysics.

The Realm of the Nebulae (Silliman Memorial Lectures)
Edwin Hubble Manufacturer: Yale University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0300025009 |
Book Description
No modern astronomer made a more profound contribution to our understanding of the cosmos than did Edwin Hubble, who first conclusively demonstrated that the universe is expanding. Basing his theory on the observation of the change in distanct galaxies, called red shift, Hubble showed that this is a Doppler effect, or alteration in the wavelength of light, resulting from the rapid motion of celestial objects away from Earth. In 1935, Hubble described his principal observations and conclusions in the Silliman lectures at Yale University. These lectures were published the following year as "The Realm of the Nebulae," which quickly became a classic work.Customer Reviews:
