4 out of 5 stars Maybe the only practical how-to for t'ai chi.......2001-08-23

Eager Westerners scoop up videos and books on t'ai chi hoping to learn this powerful movement form without a real, live teacher. "Ride the Tiger" is one of the few that can help you do just that! Simple, step-by-step, behaviorally specific instructions with photos and drawings are balanced with equally simple questions to self-check one's progress. The story of how the author, a nuclear physicist, was drawn to learn and then teach t'ai chi provides a unique slant on East meets West. His explanations of how it works based on his scientific understandings are especially intriguing. Qualified teachers are becoming more widely available, but in the meantime, this book is a useful tool.

The three above mentioned arts plus Chi Kung are the classical "Internal Arts" of Chinese martial arts. They are known for thier life giving, healing properties as well as thier effectivness as a fighting arts. This book gives a good overview of the arts with unigue and very effective line drawings which show movement.Tai chi is by far the most well known in the West but the other arts share the same principles and effect the body in the same way

T'ai Chi is a 2,000-year-old Chinese martial art that is becoming an increasingly popular exercise trend in the U.S. Its appeal is in its calming, destressing, and energy-boosting qualities. It also improves balance, coordination, strength, and flexibility, and is credited with many health benefits, such as lowering blood pressure. Author Bill Douglas has studied T'ai Chi and QiGong for 20 years and teaches at colleges, medical universities, and corporations. He describes the myriad benefits, how to prepare for your first T'ai Chi experience, its different styles, and how and where to practice. Douglas presents 64 T'ai Chi movements in photographs and instructions. Recurring boxes give tips for living the principles, definitions of Chinese terms, special cautions, and anecdotes. The difference between T'ai Chi and QiGong is not clearly explained, however: "T'ai Chi's goal of relaxing the mind and body to encourage the flow of energy through us makes it QiGong. However, not all QiGong is T'ai Chi." Then he tells us to "forget about it" because the differences will become obvious as you learn the exercises.

Douglas admits that no book is a substitute for a live class with a live teacher: "The ability to see an instructor move and to ask for clarification or hear the questions of other students is invaluable. Also, it's easier in person for instructors to explain things in stages while you relax, whereas when using a book, facts must be remembered because the instructor isn't there to remind you." Still, this book is a useful introduction to the principles of T'ai Chi and QiGong, and an interesting supplement to what you'll learn in a class. --Joan Price

      Book Description

But when it comes to signing up for a T'ai Chi or QiGong class, you get such cold feet you decide to head for your couch and eat Chinese takeout. Don't wear out your cushions yet! The complete Idiot's Guide to T'ai Chi & QiGong gives you step-by-step ways to incorporate a T'ai Chi program into your life at home and at work.

This book and DVD are good for very beginners interesed in learning about the health aspects of Taijiquan and Qigong only, not the martial (self defense) styles which this author does not explore. If you are interested in depth and breadth for both health and martial, look for books (30+) written by and videos (35+) produced by Dr. Yang, Jwing Ming.

3 out of 5 stars Ok, but not totally clear.......2003-06-17

Let's face it, you'll never learn the true form of Tai Ji from a book. The only way to learn it, and Qi Gong, is from a qualified teacher, in person. I tried to learn from this book but could never get the forms right. The book itself is highly readable and easy to follow, but sometimes you can get lost. Taking a class totally improved my Tai Ji. Then afterwards I re-read this book, and it was much easier to follow the right way.

      1 out of 5 stars Useless.......2002-04-09

If you want to learn the form of this style, look else ware. Instructions on the form are very poor. One photo for a posture is not enough to understand how to communicate the movements of the form. The rest of the information given in the book is rather superficial.
This book serves no purpose at any level...

4 out of 5 stars Lots of info in plain English, low on instruction.......2002-03-06

This book is a nice overview of traditional Tai Chi, western Tai Chi, Qi Gong, and traditional Eastern medicine. Layed out in the popular "For Dummies" style, the writer covers a ton of ground. Very informative. He even discusses what to wear and how to find a good instructor. What isn't covered (in any great detail any way) is how to do tai chi. There is an exhaustive section of Qi Gong excercises, but the section on a modern Tai Chi form is rushed. Each movement is only accompanied by one poorly printed photograph and a very abbreviated explination. But, as a suppliment, this book is priceless. Buy this to expand your knowledge of Tai Chi, but find a book/vid/class on forms to go with it.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the time.......2002-01-24

I read this hoping for an insight, I got very little from it.

            Book Description

Foot Point-Zone Massage Therapy is one volume of The Series of Traditional Chinese Medicine for Foreign Readers.

This book is designed and written for foreign TCM practitioners and patients who hope that they can apply this therapy in their clinical practice or treat their diseases and keep their fit by themselves.

Foot massage therapy is a traditional therapy in China. Different from the foot massage therapy in other countries, this therapy in TCM is based on both the theories of TCM and the achievements of modern science. Therefore, it is more valuable and practical in the clinic.

This book contains three major parts. Part one is a general introduction to the concept of foot point-zone massage therapy; part two involves the commonly used points and reflecting areas with a detailed description of their locations, manipulations and indications; and part three deals with application of this therapy in treatment of various kinds of diseases, in which a general description of the diseases, essentials of diagnosis, massage treatment of the disease and remarks on the treatment are made.

This book can be used as both a textbook for foreign TCM learners and the foreign TCM practitioners. In addition, it may also be adopted as a reference book for Western doctors who hope have some knowledge of TCM

Irritant dermatitis is a common condition, accounting for a significant proportion of occupational skin disease. The recent advent of non-invasive skin bioengineering technology has accelerated dermatology research in this field. This book comprises an exhaustive reference text on irritant contact dermatitis, covering all aspects of the condition: clinical features, epidemiology, prevention and therapy, prognosis, mechanisms, pathology and regulatory issues. The book also presents novel in vitro and in vivo research techniques and findings. As irritant dermatitis affects multiple specialties, the audience for this book is wide, including clinical and investigative dermatologists, allergists, toxicologists, pharmaceutical scientists, occupational and environmental physicians, public health physicians, cosmetologists and skin bioengineers.

                Book Description

In The Dreaming Universe author Fred Alan Wolf examines the psychological and scientific elements of this most personal yet most enigmatic of human processes. By linking research ranging from the ancient Greek "dream temples" and modern experiments in telepathy, REM, and lucid dreaming to his own research on human consciousness, he theorizes that dreaming is the basis for consciousness, and that it is through dreaming that we are able to manifest a sense of ourselves.

                10-Point Rating: (5.5)
This book gets two stars for dealing with an extremely interesting topic and for making quite a few good points throughout, however the author just wants dreams to do too much. The fact that we can and do distinguish between waking (i.e. ordinary) consciousness and dream consciousness means that the two must be qualitatively different - and in fact they are. The discontinuity of dreams among other features distinguishes them as derivative conscious states, that is to say they are not primary - everyday waking consciousness is primary. We define dreams relative to waking states and not vice-versa for a variety of reasons, and Wallace does little to challenge these obvious differences. It's a bit like saying "everything's alive" or "everything's conscious" - statements like these tend to cheapen the meanings of these words, if everything is, then nothing is.

4 out of 5 stars Sophistocated and enlightening.......2002-03-22

This has much of the same information as the Holographic Universe (above) but worded in a more scientific way. I found Talbot's book much easier to read and just better overall. This book is highly worthwhile in it's own right although. If I had to pick one it would be Talbots.

                4 out of 5 stars Very good........2002-01-06

This is not light reading..It is a read that one has to take slow and think about. The information presented in the book is very thought stimulating. It is an excellent book and the author does a good job of simplifying a very complex subject.

                4 out of 5 stars Basic Instincts.......2001-04-26

This book is a must if you've ever wondered why it's easier to hunt deer with a computer game than it is to hunt the real thing. A computer (and the brain, according to some physicists) operate under Boolean theory. A program contains all possible scenarios at once, with overlaps in some segments of each. A specific inquiry narrows the choices, but ultimately, there is only one outcome. Fred Alan Wolf attempts to explain the variable 'instinct' that is the ancient universal holding place for all knowledge. Instinct can't be duplicated by a computer, so it must exist in a Quantum environment. A semi-conscious state like a dream would be necessary to access such an environment. An excellent thought-provoking read.

Fred Alan Wolf takes us closer than ever to understanding the "Mind's Eye," and how the brain produces pictures through holograms.

Whether you agree or disagree with Wolf's conclusions, you can't read this book without learning something, or seeing something new in the world of consciousness, matter, and dreams. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars The harmony of the spheres..........2004-01-16

I have always been a fan of George Abell's astronomy text, 'Realm of the Universe'. The first edition of it encountered was the third edition, published in 1984. It has gone through several more editions, and yet it remains true to the basic structure of the subject. This is a text intended for the non-scientist; it is a text often used for liberal arts students in one-semester courses on astronomy. It involves mathematics and formulae, but relies more on the intuitive sense of astronomy and is not heavy on technical terminology or confusing descriptions of use only to other scientists.

Astronomy is a very visual science, and this book takes full advantage of the many photographs returned by the Hubble telescope, planetary probe expeditions, and first-class telescopic images from around the world. It presents graphics, charts, and images of non-visual spectrum data in easy to understand formats.

The first section is entitled 'The Celestial Clockwork' -- here Abell looks at the history of astronomy (which is intimately woven into the history of timekeeping, both in terms of hours of the day as well as seasons of change), then introduces some broad concepts such as gravitation and star movements. This section also looks at eclipses, anticipating the later section on earth and moon.

The second part looks at 'Radiation from Space' -- this actually means, what can we see from space? Abell is not talking about harmful radiation here, but rather the light and other electromagnetic signals we get from stars, planetary bodies, celestial objects, and even the background radiation in the universe, which is likely the signature of the Big Bang. Abell also looks at observation devices -- optical telescopes, radio telescopes, and space-platform and probe observation devices.

The third section deals with the Realm of the Planets -- earth and moon; the terrestrial planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars); the Jovian planets (the gaseous giants of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, and the ambiguous Pluto, as well as addressing the question of further planets); the various other bodies (debris, Abell terms them) in the solar system, such as asteroids, comets, solar atmosphere; finally, Abell discusses theories of the origin of the solar system and general properties of all planets.

The fourth section goes further afield into the Realm of the Stars. Abell investigates the motion and distance of stars, the aspects and properties of starlight (visual and extra-visual spectrum), properties of stars, general distribution, and finally takes the opportunity to look at the possibility of life on planets around other stars.

The fifth section is in many ways a continuation of the fourth, dealing with the Life Cycle of Stars. In addition to looking at the general pattern of the evolution of stars and the differing fates of stars, from nebulae and initial accretion to middle age to the destruction as dwarf stars, pulsars, neutron stars or even black holes, Abell looks at the theories of relativity (both special and general) and the implications that stars' gravitation have on the universe and on themselves.

The final section deals with galactic astronomy and large-scale cosmology, the overall structure of the universe. The different types of galaxies are introduced and examined (spiral, bar, elliptical, irregular), as well as quasars and inter-galactic matter. The structure of the universe is examined in clusters and superclusters of galaxies, and finally the book concludes looking at the Big Bang theory, the current reigning theory of universal origin and expansion.

The appendices include a wealth of data, including star maps, data about planets, stars, and galaxies, information about eclipses, and various charts of mathematical and chemical data relating to astronomy.

Abell introduces each subject in a very easy-to-read way, incorporating the history and the personalities behind astronomy at every turn. This is a text for the mathematically phobic person to learn astronomy from, as well as those who want a general overview, or a good solid introduction before expanding the study into the more technical aspects of astronomy and astrophysics.

No modern astronomer made a more profound contribution to our understanding of the cosmos than did Edwin Hubble, who first conclusively demonstrated that the universe is expanding. Basing his theory on the observation of the change in distanct galaxies, called red shift, Hubble showed that this is a Doppler effect, or alteration in the wavelength of light, resulting from the rapid motion of celestial objects away from Earth. In 1935, Hubble described his principal observations and conclusions in the Silliman lectures at Yale University. These lectures were published the following year as "The Realm of the Nebulae," which quickly became a classic work.
