      Book Description

Widely used by Curriculum Directors and Administrators, this handbook/reference focuses on the everyday details of developing, organizing, operating, and managing the cooperative occupational education plan—with topics presented in a logical sequence of an educational planning-strategy-structure system. It shows how to apply the plan at the secondary level, adult workforce level, and post-secondary and collegiate levels, and to occupations in agriculture, business, family and consumer sciences, marketing, and trade and industry. Features complete forms (training agreements, student evaluation forms, training plans, etc.) for use in coordinating and managing cooperative educational programs in each area. Covers in detail the impact of current vocational legislation, legal aspects, evaluation, and accountability of cooperative education. Cooperative Education Models. Coordinators and Their Roles. Initiating the Plan. Coordinator Responsibilities at the Secondary Level, for Adult Workforce, at the Post-secondary and Collegiate Levels. Planning and Carrying Out Effective In-school Instruction. Developing Training Stations as Instructional Laboratories. Correlating Instruction Between School and Job Laboratories. Accountability Through Evaluation. Legal and Regulatory Aspects of Cooperative Education. The Plan in Agricultural, Business, Health, Family and Consumer Sciences, Marketing, and Trade and Industrial Occupations. For Curriculum Directors, Local Administrators, Teachers, and Consultants involved in cooperative vocational education.

Prof. Hamilton's work on apprenticeship is based on modifying the centuries-old German apprenticeship program to the different culture of the US and Canada. This important work was picked up on early on by Bill Clinton, then Governer of Arkansas (the book jacket has a quote from Bill!), and was largely responsible for the School to Work Transitions Act. Necessary reading for anyone who is interested in a way to make education more meaningful for the majority of our high school students.

          Book Description

A growing concern with performance outcomes of adult and continuing education programs has created motivation for collaboration with organizations whose primary purpose may not be education. By developing partnership relationships, these organizations can more effectively design programs to foster transfer of learning from programs to practice. How not-for-profit organizations collaborate to develop and present adult and continuing education programs is the unifying theme in this book. It also provides guidance for those in adult and continuing education and related areas who must work with other organizations. In a sense, it is both a road map on what factors to examine as collaborative arrangements are considered and a guide developed from practice-based data. This text is intended for those professionals working in the areas of education, local government, parks and recreation, health care, economic development agencies, and social service agencies. It may also be used as required reading material for undergraduate and graduate courses that prepare professionals for practice.

                    Description:
Career exploration by Antioch College students who graduated between 1946 and 1955 (N=73) was studied to determine relationships between the occupational categories of cooperative education jobs taken in college (obtained from a campus archive) and subsequent work histories (obtained from surveying the graduates at about 70 years). Five hypotheses were tested. Results supported four of the hypotheses, with partial support for the fifth. Co-op jobs taken by the sample represented each of 23 occupational classifications, and most graduates took post-graduate jobs in occupational functions and contexts they had explored as co-op students. High levels of individuality in use of the co-op program and in career paths were found. Four co-op-to-career patterns were described, based on the degree to which functions and contexts were explored during college and career; a case study was included to exemplify each pattern. Gender differences were revealed in the patterns, but not the group data. Job context was particularly important in defining these patterns. Implications for research and practice were discussed tentatively, however given the lack of a control group, characteristics of the study sample, and particularities of the historical era studied, the ability to generalize beyond the study sample is limited.

                      Book Description

Computer simulations not only belong to the most important methods for the theoretical investigation of granular materials, but provide the tools that have enabled much of the expanding research by physicists and engineers. The present book is intended to serve as an introduction to the application of numerical methods to systems of granular particles. Accordingly emphasis is on a general understanding of the subject rather than on the presentation of latest advances in numerical algorithms. Although a basic knowledge of C++ is needed for the understanding of the numerical methods and algorithms in the book, it avoids usage of elegant but complicated algorithms to remain accessible for those who prefer to use a different programming language. While the book focuses more on models than on the physics of granular material, many applications to real systems are presented.

                        Book Description

While there is not yet any general theory for granular materials, significant progress has been achieved for dilute systems, also called granular gases. The contributions in this book address both the kinetic approach one using the Boltzmann equation for dissipative gases as well as the less established hydrodynamic description. The last part of the book is devoted to driven granular gases and their analogy with molecular fluids. Care has been taken so as to present the material in a pedagogical and self-contained way and this volume will thus be particularly useful to nonspecialists and newcomers to the field.

                          Book Description

"Granular Gases" are diluted many-particle systems in which the mean free path of the particles is much larger than the typical particle size, and where particle collisions occur dissipatively. The dissipation of kinetic energy can lead to effects such as the formation of clusters, anomalous diffusion and characteristic shock waves to name but a few. The book is organized as follows: Part I comprises the rigorous theoretical results for the dilute limit. The detailed properties of binary collisions are described in Part II. Part III contains experimental investigations of granular gases. Large-scale behaviour as found in astrophysical systems is discussed in Part IV. Part V, finally, deals with possible generalizations for dense granular systems.

                            Book Description

Kinetic Theory of granular Gases provides an introduction to the rapidly developing theory of dissipative gas dynamics as it has been developed mainly during the past decade. The book is aimed at readers from the advanced undergraduate level onwards and leads up to the present state of
research. The text is self-contained, in the sense that no mathematical or physical knowledge is required that goes beyond standard undergraduate physics courses. The material is adequate for a one-semester course and contains chapter summaries as well as exercises with detailed solutions. Special
emphasis is put on a microscopically consistent description of pairwise particle collisions which leads to an impact-velocity dependent coefficient of restitution. The description of the many-particle system, based on the Boltzmann equation, starts with the derivation of the velocity distribution
function, followed by the investigation of self-diffusion and Brownian motion. Using hydrodynamical methods, transport processes and self-organized structure formulation are studies. An appendix gives a brief introduction to event-driven molecular dynamics. A second appendix describes a novel
mathematical technique for the derivation of the kinetic properties which allows for the application of computer algebra. The book is accompanied by a web page where the molecular dynamics program as well as the computer-algebra programs are provided.

                                Description:
A type of bioreactor packed with granular activated carbon (GAC) as support material was used for the removal of high concentrations of H"2S in waste gases. Experiments about the physical adsorption capacity of GAC matrix, retention time and pressure drop were carried out; the abilities of bioreactor to buffer shock loading and removal efficiency (RE) of long-term operation were also investigated. Besides, the kinetics analysis of single-stage biodesulfuration was also studied. The results showed that GAC matrix provided high bacteria adsorption capacity, showed a superior resistance to shock loading and allowed good operational control in area of pressure drop. When the retention time was 25s and influent concentration of H"2S was 100mgL^-^1, the REs were beyond 98%. An average 96.8% RE was achieved during the long-term operation for GAC bioreactor under different concentrations up to 120mgL^-^1 by keeping constant flow rate. No acidification was observed in the GAC bioreactor during the long-term operation. The kinetic analysis showed that the maximum removal rate and the saturation constant in the GAC bioreactor were 666.7mg(H"2S)(Ld)^-^1 and 20.8mgL^-^1, respectively. The response of bioreactor to shock loading operation showed that GAC bioreactor has gotten a good buffering capacity to withstand fluctuating loading conditions.
