Fish Hatchery Management
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Manufacturer: University Press of the Pacific ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1410225569 |
Book Description
The format of Fish Hatchery Management is functional: hatchery requirements and operations; broodstock management and spawning; nutrition and feeding; fish health; fish transportation. We have tried to emphasize the principles of hatchery culture that are applicable to many species of fish, whether they are from warmwater, coolwater, or coldwater areas of the continent. Information about individual species is distributed through the text; with the aid of the Index, a hatchery manager can assemble detailed profiles of several species of particular interest. In the broad sense, fish culture as presented in Fish Hatchery Management encompasses not only the classical "hatchery" with troughs and raceways (intensive culture), but also pond culture (extensive culture), and cage and pen culture (which utilizes water areas previously considered inappropriate for rearing large numbers of fish in a captive environment). The coolwater species, such as northern pike, walleye, and the popular tiger muskie, traditionally were treated as warmwater species and were extensively reared in dirt ponds. These species now are being reared intensively with increasing success in facilities traditionally associated with salmonid (coldwater) species.

Fisheries Bioengineering Symposium (American Fisheries Society Symposium, No 10)
John Colt Manufacturer: American Fisheries Society ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0913235725 |
Book Description
Symposium 10: Proceeding of the 1988 Fisheries Bioengineering Symposium, held at Portland, OR. This book presents 65 papers based on the interface of biology and engineering. Most of the symposium was devoted to solutions in two divergent topics: habitat improvement and restoration, and mitigation via hatcheries, which define the main alternatives available for correcting fishery losses in developed river and which are the professional concerns of bioengineering. New approaches to habitat rehabilitation, fish passage design, and hatchery function are covered. This book is intended for salmonid fishery managers and hatchery managers.

Modern Cosmology and the Dark Matter Problem (Cambridge Lecture Notes in Physics)
D. W. Sciama Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0521438489 |
Book Description
This book shows how modern cosmology and astronomy have led to the need to introduce dark matter in the universe to account for mass. Some of this dark matter is in the familiar form of protons, electrons and neutrons, but most of it must have a more exotic form. The favored, but not the only, possibility is neutrinos of non-zero rest mass, pair-created in the hot big bang and surviving to the present day. After a review of modern cosmology, this book gives a detailed account of the author's recent theory in which these neutrinos decay into photons that are the main ionizing agents in hydrogen and nitrogen in the interstellar and intergalactic medium. This theory, though speculative, explains a number of rather different puzzling phenomena in astronomy and cosmology in a unified way and predicts values of various important quantities such as the mass of the decaying neutrino and the Hubble constant.

Gravitational Lensing:An Astrophysical Tool (Lecture Notes in Physics)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 354044355X |
Book Description
Gravitational lensing is by now sufficiently well understood that it can be used as a tool of investigation in other astrophysical areas. Applications include the determination of the Hubble constant, probing the dark matter context of galaxies and the mapping of the universe to the identification of otherwise invisible large-scale structures. Each chapter of the book covers in a self-contained manner a subfield of gravitational lensing, with the double aim of describing in a simple way the basics of the theory and of reviewing the most recent developments as well as applications foreseen in the near future. The book will thus be particularly useful as a high-level textbook for nonspecialist researchers and advanced students wishing to become familiar with the field all the way up to the forefront of research.

Book Description
This collection of articles emerged from the Nobel Symposium 98 that celebrated the centenary of the Nobel Prize as well as the one of the famous Swedish astronomer Bertil Lindblad. Many outstanding scientists contributed to this unique review of the state of the art in barred galaxy research. Theoretical papers describe their evolution, the dynamics as well as fundamental physical effects near their nuclei. Other contributions cover numerical and observational aspects and thus represent a very active area in astrophysics. The centre of our galaxy was also amply dealt with. The collection addresses researchers as well as graduate students.

Central Activity in Galaxies: From Observational Data to Astrophysical Diagnostics (Lecture Notes in Physics)
Aa Sandqvist Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0387563717 |
Book Description
This outstanding collection of surveys addresses graduate and predoctoral students. It reports on theoretical research and observational data on active galactic nuclei: The enigma of the nuclei of galaxies with their central "monster" driving the vast range of activity observed in quasars, radio galaxies, Seyferts, starburst galaxies and even our own Galaxy are explored in this volume. Topics covered include: the impact of recent measurements in the infrared and radio region on our knowledge of the nucleus of our Galaxy; the spectra and classification of active galactic nuclei, the properties of their host galaxies, their cosmological distribution and evolution, the role of stars and the hydrodynamics of the interstellar medium in the nuclei; the description of the inner parsec of a standard active galactic nucleus based on direct interpretation of the observations; the infrared activity of galaxies; the physics of radio galaxies and their jets, emphasizing the physics of gas flow and high-energy particle interactions as well as shock acceleration. These are all discussed in considerable depth and presented in self-contained chapters with exhaustive reference lists of the scientific literature.
