Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very informative, beautifully illustrated.......2004-10-09

I think some of the other reviewers missed the point of this book. It's not a "what to wear" guide; it's not an in-depth historical treatise, and it's not soft-core porn. Actually, this book is a really good overview of lingerie and how it's tied in with social trends and ideals of women's bodies over the years. If the photos are titillating, it's because lingerie itself has an erotic side to it, and it's often photographed in a way that enhances that aspect, which is appealing both to men (who see it) and women (who wear it). The photos are beautiful and sexy and add to the appeal of the book - and I'm a heterosexual female. But the text is what's really interesting. I found myself unable to put it down, and it's caused me to think about undergarments in a whole new way.

3 out of 5 stars Somewhat interesting.......2000-12-12

Like most women, I enjoy dressing seductively and sexy for my partner. From garter belts, to satin gowns, to thongs and one piece little see throughs, they're all beautiful. The book has nice illustrations and talks about lingerie from the early days to now, but the book does not cover all the basics. The book, in my opinion is worth reading if you want to know the basics on lingerie, nothing else. As a part-time model, I have found that lingerie does not fit all women, even if they have flawless bodies. This book does nothing to suggest what would look better on tall women, skinny women or women with large/small breasts. I did like the book, but I felt like it was very basic and missing alot of useful information.

5 out of 5 stars Intelligent prose on history undergarments..........2000-05-09

I'm not sure what others consider titillating material, but this book certainly is not out for the quick, cheap thrill (and that's a good thing). The text describes the changing fashions over the years, and the improvements in materials which allowed those changes in many cases. The pictures range from gritty, authentic b/w "early pioneer style" to 1960's variety to the obligatory Victoria's Secret model shots. There is no shame in appreciating the few photographs which one might consider slightly arousing, and the text is an interesting read. My girlfriend very much enjoyed receiving this book as a surprise gift, which we then read together.

1 out of 5 stars I'm Not the Market for This Book.......1999-12-07

As a heterosexual female costumer, I'm always looking for a solid book on underclothing that is not primarily designed to titillate a male audience. Sadly, this isn't it.

Wright, and Mies van der Rohe.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good book, but get the new edition.......2004-06-08

This is the best general architectural guide to Chicago and the suburbs, but get the new Fifth Edition ISBN: 0226740668. It's much more up-to-date and the maps are easier to use.

4 out of 5 stars A Must-Have, Quick Reference.......2001-10-02

This is one of my favorite mini-books on Chicago architecture. It is perfect if you are in need of a comprehensive guide with short entries to shape your exploration of the city. Unlike, say, the AIA Guide, photographs are provided for every entry. Photos are small but nowhere near as tiny as the AIA thumbnails. While the entries are brief, they cover most of the important highlights. I am anxious for a new edition, as many of the descrpitions (and their accompanying photos) are in need of updating in order to cover recent restoration efforts and newer major buildings as well.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2000-05-17

I love this book. It is fairly recent overview of the famous buildings in the Chicago area. It covers downtown, the city, and the suburbs. It also has some good buildings featured from the Sears Tower to the Amritech Building at Hoffmann Estates. Though the photos are in black and white, and the entries are a little short, this is a definate buy if you are interested in Urban Architecture or Chicago.

This portable field guide to the historic architecture of western North Carolina covers 1,200 historic buildings in 25 counties in the foothills and mountains. It introduces readers to the region's rich and diverse architectural heritage—from the log farmstead to the opulent mountain retreat, and from ancient earthen mounds of the Cherokee to twentieth-century hydroelectric dams and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Featuring more than 370 photographs and 36 maps, the guide is written for travelers and residents alike. It offers concise entries on notable buildings, neighborhoods, and communities, emphasizing buildings that are visible from the road and indicating sites that are open to the public.

A project of the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office of the Division of Archives and History and its western office in Asheville, the book reflects more than twenty-five years of fieldwork and research in the agency's statewide architectural survey and National Register of Historic Places programs. A previous volume covers eastern North Carolina and a future volume will cover the piedmont region.

4 out of 5 stars If you are a not a specialist, this book is great........2000-03-25

I read this book as part of a research project I was doing about the design of college campuses. I found it to be extremely helpful in my project and I plan on refering to it in the future; I am pursuing a Master's of Landscape Architecture. What I liked about this book is two-fold:

    1. Each chapter is a self-contained guide to designing a plaza, park, campus, or playground with people in mind. This important to me becuase I try to focus my designs around the people who will be using them. Each chapter gives useful design tips and helps about the given topic.

    2. This book was academic while remaining readable. The authors refer to studies relevent to the topic at hand, but do not become bogged down in theoretical nonsense.

I recommend buying it to anyone who would like a well-organized general design reference book. I would not recommend it to anyone who needs in depth information on any specific topic covered in the book. Check it out from the library if that is your intent.

"Cumbayah" is an enduring campfire song for children and a source of inspiration for adults. Though its roots are in the African-American tradition, it speaks to people of many different cultures, ages, and religious. With power and grace, Floyd Cooper depicts scenes from everyday life that emphasize how people all over the world are united in spirit. Here is an uplifting book that, with its simple lyrics, can also help teach children to read and sing. A historical note and a musical arrangement are included.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful People for a Beautiful Song.......2001-08-17

Floyd Cooper's luscious illustrations compliment the classic llulaby/campfire song that we all know from our childhood. Cooper's portraits of children and adults from all parts of the world emphasize the true meaning of the song - that we are all human. Cooper, A Caldecott Honor and Coretta Scott King Illustrators winner, uses his talent at portraiture to foster cross-cultural understanding, and this book is a superb example! End pages have the music for piano and guitar. This book would be perfect for schools, scout troops, or your own family campfire!

        5 out of 5 stars stunning.......2000-08-29

Realism and beauty make this a truly magnificent mulitcultural addition to anyone's library -- child or adult. The words are simple for children, and familiar for adults. It inspires us to explore who we are as a people, both collectively and individually. It is a great book for launching important dialogue with children.

        5 out of 5 stars Cumbayah.......2000-01-13

This is one of the most beautifully illustrated books. It really encompasses the hymn that we have known all of our lives. Its multi-cultural theme makes it so relevant for children today. A must have for your child's collection.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful illustrations of children from all over the world.......1999-08-26

After checking this book out from the library several times for my daughter, I have decided it would be a beautiful addition to our home library. Cooper illustrates children & adults from all over the world singing, sleeping, working, hurting, laughing, crying, and more. He gives a history of the song and word, cumbayah. We love music & singing and we love this book.

Although the exact number will never be known, it is estimated that there were over 10,000 military engagements during the Civil War. Most have long since been forgotten, but the places where a number of them were fought have been maintained as historic sites. Others have been memorialized by statues or markers, as have many Civil War leaders and soldiers.

Arranged by state, this reference work provides capsule descriptions and information on Civil War sites and collections throughout the United States, including battlefields, memorial markers and statues, museums, cemeteries, and other landmarks. In addition to the description, the address and telephone number for each are given, along with admission fees (if any) and policies, hours open and other pertinent information. For each state, there is a brief profile of its role during the Civil War and a timeline of significant battles or other events that took place there.
