Book Description

When Eleanor Agnew, her husband, and two young children moved to the Maine woods in 1975, the back-to-the-land movement had already attracted untold numbers of converts who had grown increasingly estranged from mainstream American society. This is their story, in all its glories and agonies, its triumphs and disasters (many of them richly amusing), told by a woman who experienced the simple life firsthand but has also read widely and interviewed scores of people who went back to the land. Most of them, it turns out, came back from freedom and self-sufficiency, either by returning to urban life or by dressing up their primitive rural existence--but they held onto the values they gained during their back-to-the-land experience.

5 out of 5 stars A blast from the past ..........2007-03-07

Back in the 70's, I never dropped out of society and lived on the land, but I have friends that did .. and while they have some "conveniences" these days, to some degree they still lead the simple life. I am very much into voluntary simplicity but I never felt it should be so extreme. This was an awesome read that brought back many wonderful memories. At times, I was confused as to whether the author was talking first person or if she was quoting an interviewee, but despite that, the author did a great job of illustrating why folks dropped out and then what influences led them to come back to mainstream. Some of this I was exposed to ... some of this I lived ... but all of this book, I thoroughly enjoyed and I think you will, too.

5 out of 5 stars Honest.......2006-06-26

One of the better books by former Hippies about the 60's and 70's. Well written and insightful. If you are really interested in the back to the land phenomenon and what it was really like this is highly recommended. If you want a light, "and then we all got stoned" sort of retrospective this will be too analytical but still interesting.

5 out of 5 stars well thought out and thorough.......2005-05-11

I was pleasently surprised by the depth of research and thought that went into this book. This was definately an eye opening review of the nieve attitude that even today many have. I had at one time thought about homesteading in some fashion or other, but after reading this book, and thinking about my current life style I personally will be very careful about trying any version of homesteading. It almost seems like the best choice is to move to a low cost of living suberb, and experiment there first. Maybe set up a small self sufficent business first, that can pay the medical bills.

4 out of 5 stars back from the land and happy about it.......2005-01-02

I was one of the people who lived this type of life in the mountains...and although it certainly did give me a strength in character and greater empathy for others, I left it behind too. It was hard even if you had running water and electricity. Still, the experience does lodge in the memory and you are never really happy in the city or suburbs once you have lived on a large piece of quiet land. I highly recommend this book to anyone with that rural dream, or readers interested in women's history or that time in our country.

3 out of 5 stars A Real Wet Blanket for Wanna Be Homesteaders!.......2004-12-28

Back From the Land was kind of disappointing to read, especially for someone who's life dream is to be able to homestead! I understand exactly how hard it is going to be, having been born and raised in rural Appalachia and having relatives that are still alive that lived exactly like this up until recently. I had just hoped that there would be some sort of, I don't know, silver lining that would let people see that there is a rose on the thorn bush. Overall, though, it is a first hand look at someone who was doin' (think Mother Earth News) and unfourtunately didn't like the lifestyle. I would recommend that if someone bought this book to see exactly what it was like to homestead, don't put all your eggs in this basket. Check out some other books that show the pros also to living intentionally, like Helen and Scott Nearing's Good Life books (even though they are described as virtual "sell outs" in some writtings)and some of the "Reports from Them That's Doin" in the older issues of MEN.

      Book Description

What if... this morning, when you opened your newspaper, the headline startled your memories back to childhood fears: Mary Shelley's Frankenstein Creature Found...Alive! What if Mary Shelley's Frankenstein was really a true story? Back from the Dead is a contemporary telling of the finding and revival of the thought-to-be mythical creature. The story follows Sergio Carerra, the scientist who revives the creature and brings him into the family of man. Through the creature's dreams and flashbacks to the 1790s, we view a unique perspective on the original story. We learn how the modern world sees the creature, and how he feels about his resurrection. Now that he is back, there are others interested in him for reasons not so apparent, and they will do anything to get what they want. Finally, after 180 years, we are about to learn the truth.

5 out of 5 stars This novel will grab you and pull you in!.......2005-06-15

This gripping novel transports a classic fictitious character into the modern world, culture and conscience. Within it's captivating pages, the author exposes the modern man for his monstrously hideous nature in contrast to his natural and timeless capacity for pure compassion. Our flaws, triumphs, aspirations, dignity and motivations are laid on the table before us and brilliantly dissected with a clear eye and a steady pen. It becomes easy to forget we are reading fiction as this tale comes to life in our hands.

5 out of 5 stars Time well spent.......2005-06-08

I must admit, it took a few weeks to get to it, but once I did, I was hooked. A continuation of Shelley's original, and yet considerably more. Fascinating for what does happen, what does not happen, and the play of good and evil in life. Well-drawn characters, great scenes, and mounting suspense ... what readers ought to be looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling novel of drama, horror, and Gothic storytelling........2005-06-06

Stuart Land's book, Back from the Dead, is a book that I would recommend to other readers who are looking for a novel that is compelling, intriguing, and filled with adventure from the beginning to the end. The characters personalities unfold in a way that I felt as if I was in a relationship with them. When the book began they were like new neighbors, living next door. As I continued to get deeper into the story I got deeper into their hearts and souls. He brought the story together in a fashion that was unpredictable, keeping me awake at night.

4 out of 5 stars Awake, thy book is near - grab this before taking off .......2005-04-04

Grab this book before taking off for your summer vacation, and take along the Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley's book, "Frankenstein", too.

I just finished the book so the ending is fresh in my mind, and I'll share it with you. No, I'll not ruin the ending, but will say that little has separated us from the time of Shelley's writing 200 hundred years ago and what we must conclude today. As a society, we are still not ready to be creators, parents, yes, but creators of life, no. And in the world of cloning (sheep, why sheep when you can have so many so easily....)

Now how the conclusion comes at you is why you should read this book. You will be hooked in the first chapter, which sets the stage of why you should beleive what comes in the following chapters, and beleive, you will. As chapters develop the plot, you will recognize the American society of today and why the conclusion is both surprising and not surprising. From the perspective of America today and the society we have built, this picture of life after resurrection is a tale to be understood.

OK, there were two typos, one on page 207, and another page, too, which you will have to find. I mention this because I'm sure that this book will go into a second printing, so here is a change to catch it.

      Enjoy

                    Book Description

This book summarizes proceedings of the invited papers presented at the International Symposium on Massive WDM and TDM Soliton Transmission Systems held in Kyoto, Japan in the fall of 1999. The symposium is the third of the series and is considered to be the most representative symposium on the subject of use of optical solitons for ultrafast communications. In particular, this symposium focuses on the newly developed technologies of dispersion managed soliton transmission capabilities. Studies of properties of new solutions that appear in fibers with periodic variation of dispersion are also presented.

                        Book Description

The current research into solitons and their use in fiber optic communications is very important to the future of communications. Since the advent of computer networking and high speed data transmission technology people have been striving to develop faster and more reliable communications media. Optical pulses tend to broaden over relatively short distances due to dispersion, but solitons on the other hand are not as susceptible to the effects of dispersion, and although they are subject to losses due to attenuation they can be amplified without being received and re-transmitted.

This book is the first to provide a thorough overview of optical solitons. The main purpose of this book is to present the rapidly developing field of Spatial Optical Solitons starting from the basic concepts of light self-focusing and self-trapping. It will introduce the fundamental concepts of the theory of nonlinear waves and solitons in non-integrated but physically realistic models of nonlinear optics including their stability and dynamics. Also, it will summarize a number of important experimental verification of the basic theoretical predictions and concepts covering the observation of self-focusing in the earlier days of nonlinear optics and the most recent experimental results on spatial solitons, vortex solitons, and soliton interaction & spiraling.

                        * Introduces the fundamental concepts of the theory of nonlinear waves and solitons through realistic models

                        * Material is based on authors' years of experience actively working in and researching the field

                        * Summarizes the most important experimental verification of the basic theories, predictions and concepts of this ever evolving field from the earliest studies to the most recent

5 out of 5 stars Right Book for Nonlinear Optics .......2004-11-25

I am working in the Quantum Optics Research Lab at San Francisco State University. And I meet with many difficulties to find book or any material in Internet which could explain basic ideas about different optical solitons in photonic crystals. This book is great, a specially for someone who have no idea what is a spatial, dark, or vortex soliton. This book has many chapters in which authors discuss step by step not only teory of formation of all kinds of solitons, but also give experimental results. I enjoy to read this book, when I have some questions about solitons, and I recomend it for anyone who wants to understand what is an optical soliton.

                        5 out of 5 stars Solitons?!.......2003-09-23

The book provides both an introduction to the basic principles and a comprehensive analysis of the current state-of-the-art in the rapidly developing field of optical solitons, including temporal, spatial, and spatiotemporal solitons. This is a very well-written, pedagogical book that goes through many aspects of the soliton theory and experiment that are not covered in other books. There is a good balance between qualitative
and mathematical analysis in the book, as well as between the theory and experiment. To facilitate understanding of the material, the authors provide readers with many illustrative examples. The reader will find one of the most extensive list of bibliography at the end of each chapter. The index is complete and useful. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the soliton theory and its applications.

                              Book Description

There is currently a high level of interest in the field of nonlinear guided wave optics with the availability of nonlinear materials and their use in new areas of application. This is particularly the case for solitons and other types of nonlinear pulses in optical fibers, high capacity dispersion-free communications. Further, soliton-like beams in highly nonlinear materials, such as organic polymers, are being studied with a view to using them for fast-switching purposes in devices where the light creates its own guiding channel.
Written by two authors who are at the forefront of this research, Solitons provides a thorough treatment of the applications of switching devices. It presents the results of the most up to date research on the subject in an accessible manner and adopts a unified approach to solitons in fibers and the devices which use them. The book is an essential reference work for both professional engineers working in optoelectronics and telecommunications companies and graduate students and researchers in the area.

                                Book Description

Solitons are waves that retain their form through obstacle and distance. Solitons can be found in hydrodynamics, nonlinear optics, plasma physics, and biology. Optical solitons are solitary light waves that hold their form over an expansive interval. Conservation of this form creates an effective model for long distance voice and data transmission.

The application of this principle is essential to the technology of wired communications. Optical solitons produce crystal clear phone calls cross-country and internationally. It is because of these that someone on the other end of the phone sounds 'in the next room.' It is also pertinent to high-speed network information transmittal.

Mollenauer and Gordon have written the only text that an engineer or graduate student will need to understand this foundation subject in optics.
