For everyone interested in looking beyond the façades of architectural landmarks to learn about the forces that shaped them, Architecture: From Prehistory to Postmodernity has been a definitive resource since its publication in 1986. Marvin Trachtenberg and Isabelle Hyman, professors at New York University, weave complex information into an engrossing narrative. While the authors' focus is on the Western tradition, shared ancient roots inspired a chapter on aspects of Islamic architecture. In the second edition, Trachtenberg's well-supported opinions add a lively sense of engagement to a new chapter surveying major trends of the 1980s and 1990s (work by Renzo Piano, Frank Gehry, Daniel Liebeskind, and others). Among the special delights of the book are its excursions into fascinating architectural byways, such as the history of castles, why the mendicant monks wanted simpler churches, and the superiority of the truss to the girder. More than 1,000 illustrations, including 91color plates, provide ample visual reference. --Cathy Curtis
Book Description
"Written in exceptionally clear yet imaginative prose by two distinguished architectural historians." Paul Goldberger, The New York Times Book Review
This highly regarded, exceptionally well-written book brings to life the entire sweep of architectural history, and its greatest buildings, from the prehistoric era to the present. For over 15 years readers have relied on this incomparable work for its lucidity, originality, splendid illustrations, and nuanced interpretation of architecture. Now in its Second Edition, the top-selling history of architecture is better than ever with an updated introduction, new insights based on recent research, improved illustrations including eight additional pages in color, and above all a new chapteron the most significant and controversial works of contemporary architecture from 1980 to 2000 that proposes challenges for the future.
Customer Reviews:
This is THE story of western architecture........2006-08-30
I am a Registered architect(with National Certification), Registered Interior Designer and instructor of Architectural History. Trachtenberg and Hyman have written the definitive history of western architecture in this tract. The reading is awkward at times, but the ideas conveyed comprise the foundation of todays architectural theory. There are few, if any textbooks on this subject which maintain a consistant thread of thought all the way through. This one does. If you are vitally interested in the underpinnings of today's designs, you should read it.
Very good text book .......2006-02-23
This book is a very good text book. I have just recently needed it and just started to use it. As far as I have gotten it is easy to read. The only thing that I don't think that I like about it is that it is black and white. If you want to get the full feeling for the achitecture I would think one might need to see it in color but oh well.
Architecture: From Prehistory to Postmodernity.......2003-11-13
This book summarizes over ten thousand years of architectural history in such a practical and clear form. Ignoring its price, I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in architecture. However, though the book briefly studies such vast expanses in the history of architecture, it fails to even touch architecture in the eastern world. Asia still continues to remain much of a mystery and covering it would truly enlighten the human imagination. Yet, doing so would also probably double the size of the book, thus increasing its cost to over a hundred American dollars. The book also, I feel, seems to enter into too much detail in the forms of modern architecture. In buying this book, one most likely seeks to learn more of history not 'postmodernity,' nevertheless it can be interesting to learn how modern architecture has come to pass.
Architecture: From Prehistory to Postmodernity (2nd Edition).......2002-06-15
An update of an acclaimed survey of world architecture that is a much better read than its drab illustrations, dull layout and paucity of plans would suggest. Indeed, itÕs as hard to put down as it is to heft. The close analyses of Philip JohnsonÕs AT&T tower in New York and Norman FosterÕs HKSB tower in Hong Kong are brilliant, and the authors have the audacity to suggest that the high tech look of the one is as dishonest as the faux antique masonry of the other. This is an example of how the authors illuminate architectural history with concrete examples rather than windy generalizations. (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)

architecturestudent.......2004-04-07
i had used this book for a survey history course on architecture. since we only learn about european architecture at nyit, i didnt get to use the book much, almost a waste a money, but the pictures we seen in class were taken from the book were great.
My Antonia.......2002-11-14
I find My Antonia as a very boring, long book. The thing I enjoyed most about the book, not to mention the only thing, was how the characters were very in touch with their surroundings and nature. Little things in the land brought so much emotion and attitude to the characters. Besides this good characteristic everything else was very boring and told the childhood and early life of two average people. I do not recommend this book to anyone except for the extremely bored naturistic person out there.
Beautiful Pictures.......2001-12-18
I used this book for an arch. history class I took. The text is useful and the pictures are beautiful.
Excellent Blend.......2000-09-17
This book is an excellent blend of factual information, ease of understanding, and philosophical insight for the beginning student of architecture. There are other books which offer more information and/or insight, but few which are as good for the uninitiated.
Architecture by M. Trachtenberg & I. Hyman.......2000-02-24
For the past five years I have used this book to teach beginning architecture students - the first two semesters of a three-semester survey - and found the parts that I use (pre-19th century) very valuable, although the discussion of post-Medieval Spanish architecture was weak. My major complaint, however, is the absence of any maps! There should be several of them - one for each major section of the book.

Perspective Drawing by Ernest Norling.......2000-06-12
I am delighted to be able to order a copy of this book for my grandson -- now I can KEEP my own copy without guilt. I purchased it many years ago and found it very helpful in its explanations of the subject.
Buy this book if you want to facts, plain and simple........1999-04-11
This book is very good for someone who is on a beginning or somewhat intermediate level of perspetive drawing. It offers interesting tips and fun to look at pictures. If you are looking for a simpllififed way to learn about perspective at a bargain price this is the book for you!
A good introduction to the topic.......1998-09-21
This slim, amusingly-illustrated book introduces perspective concepts in an entirely unintimidating way. Lightweight, but still useful. Though it is printed as part of the somewhat lowbrow Walter T. Foster How-to series, the author is a true authority - he also wrote the article on perspective for the Encyclopedia Brittanica

Customer Reviews:
comprehensive and simple introduction to computing.......2000-09-10
This book is designed to provide the interested beginner with a reasonable and sometimes semi-technical introduction to a broad range of topics - computer systems as a whole, UI, types of software, Office apps, architecture, various network types, and ending with a simple introduction to SQL and programming.
I estimate this book as pitched at the level of the UK's GCSE or some of the simpler A level topics; and networking, for example, covers similar ground to the MCSE Networking Essentials; this does mean it makes certain statements that range from dubious to simply incorrect. It was supplied to me for quickly introducing certain topics in a uni course, and was _not_ appropriate for this.
In style terms, the book is very much colours/pictures/big diagrams. Each section starts with an anecdote and ends with a bunch of URLs for further exploration; a CD (which I have not looked at) provides practice in topics covered.
If you want a general _beginner's_ introduction to computing at an accessible pace, it is a reasonable choice.
Great book!.......1999-07-02
This book is great for people searching a computer education. It has it all. What's a virus? What is a network? Internet? Operating system? It has all the basic information about a computer. A great reference book. The CD is also great. It let's you see things how they really are. Beginners will love this book. I recommend it to everyone.
The book is good, and the CD that comes with it is super!!.......1999-04-20
I am using this book as part of a distance education college class. The CD that comes with the book is fantastic. It has animations and interactive labs, and plenty of assessment tools to help you determine if you've grapsed the concepts taught in the book. If you learn through interaction, this is the book & CD for you.
Not very good, information is missing........1998-12-22
The other edition was better. This one only has more pictures but not the same information. The CD is a big help but this is the only good thing about this book.

Book Review.......2005-09-13
The book that i recieved was not the correct book and I put in the isbn number so I think it would be good if you put a picture of all the books you are selling so people can see before they buy it. What am I going to do now with the wrong book?
CLEP Information Systems and Computer Applications.......2005-01-14
I purchased this book (11th Ed. paperback) to prepare for my CLEP Info Sys and Comp Apps exam. I was able to ace my CLEP by relying primarily on this excellent book. This book provides a general but comprehensive coverage of the entire breadth of computer science and technology and is an excellent test preparation, not only for computer novices and newbies, but also for students with a strong IT background. It has something to offer everyone. It is written in an easily readable and enjoyable format with plenty of attractive graphics and images. The authors have worked hard to keep the material up-to-date and relevant. I have decided to keep this book even after taking my CLEP because I find it to be also a very handy and useful reference book. I understand there is a 12th Edition out there now. I would suggest buyers consider purchasing the 12th Edition. Overall an excellent purchase.
computers 11th ed by long and long.......2004-01-21
not a bad book however my lecturer has noticed several factual and historical mistakes about the subject matter which it simply shouldnt have done for a book used by many students.
But the fact that your never quite sure weather what your reading is fact or not is not what gets me. The truley annoying thing about this book is the American propaganda. The little bits that the authors have put in to "prepare" students for when they vote. for instance they say things like "terrorists now are researching ways to destroy one of most valuable personnal and commercial assets- the contents of our disks. They do this by seeking points of vunerability in PCs and servers and by planting destructive viruses......cyber terror is now part of the terrorists arsenal of evil."
what the hell? Did i just pick up a academic book or a copy of the Daily mail!
Price.......2000-02-17
Price is not reasonable to buy to a new comer to the computing inductry, even though book is very good.

i'm sure an 8th grader has mastered this book! very simple terms, good for people that absolutely knows nothing about computers. otherwise, i needed this book for college - that's it.
Dry!.......2004-04-29
This book is extremely boring and dry. I was required to buy it for a Masters level college course. I would not reccommend this book to anyone other than a student who is required to purchase it.

This book is written with alot of interaction with the cd. But several of my classmates and I have had many problems getting the cd to run properly. Several of the lab exercises would error out. And some of the students says it locks up their computer. The text is good but the cd problems are exasperating.
