1 out of 5 stars Don't Bother.......2006-05-22

Don't even bother with this book as a review for Step 3. The format and layout is not conducive to learning the important details of step 3. The important thing with step 3 is knowing what the best diagnostic test or the best treatment should be. This book lists 3-4 different tests that can be done, but the important thing is knowing which one is the best one.

2 out of 5 stars You don't need this abuse.......2000-07-16

A&L do publish individual question books that have pretty good questions. But THESE are dreadful. They are not at all representative of the style, distribution, or difficulty of the questions on the actual test. So why bother? You don't need to be this desperate: the test isn't that hard. Have you ever heard of the "rule of twos"? . . for Step I, two weeks; for Step II, two days; and for Step III, a number 2 pencil! I did something like that (2 months, 2 weeks, and 2 days) and I did particularly "well". But the point is, I scored EXACTLY the same on all three parts! So get a copy of "Ace the Boards" and maybe Swanson's book, and go get some exercise; it's good for the brain! (Unless you've never practiced in the US; then I'd sign up for a Board Review Course like the one offered by NMSR) Good luck!

3 out of 5 stars Not bad........2000-05-20

I purchased this book to review for the Step 3. I am a resident in IM. I found the book useful overall, but it lacks many subjects that I thought were important. Its Surgery and Peds sections are especially poor. It does come with 400 review questions but these are mediocre too. Plus, the explanations of the answers are sometimes poor, for example, "This is the correct answer." -- I'm not kidding. Unfortunately, there isn't much competition for Step 3 review. You might try the Pre-test series instead. Their questions are tougher (too tough in Ob/Gyn) but more comprehensive.

4 out of 5 stars Useful Practice for Step III MCQ's.......2000-04-03

Although not representative of Step III's degree of difficulty, this book is a good way to practice for the exam especially for the lack of better sample tests for Step III. I used the 1997 edition, watch for the 2000 edition for updates.

      Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars so far from step 3.......2004-02-21

I wish the people who write specific review books have atleast an iota of idea about what the exam is like.At this rate you can as well give the book a title like usmle step 2, or PLAB or any other title cos the book has as much relation to these as to the step 3 exam.

      1 out of 5 stars Not helpful.......2003-11-27

I am not sure who wrote the review above, but this book is barely helpful to prepare for Step 3. Chiefly, the questions are NOT in the format of the exam. Many have straight-forward (single-word; not simple) answers and test highly arcane facts for those (not me) that practice Internal Medicine. As I found with Step 2, the only questions that are ANYTHING like the exam are the NMS Series.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent practice tests for USMLE Step 3.......2003-07-14

It presents the same Step 3 format. The explanations are excellent. You will learn from the explanations about topics that are not covered by the review books, but are asked on the test. Is a complement to a review book. I recommends this book in combination with CRUSH the boards. Is a great combo.

2 out of 5 stars OK for improving test taking skills.......2002-09-19

If you want to get experience in taking computer based tests this review is OK. But: Questions are far from Step 3 format, level of difficulty is highly variable, some explanations are outdated. If I had to choose again I would pick something different.

1 out of 5 stars waste of money........2002-07-04

5 out of 5 stars Good practice for the Computer-based testing.......2000-04-02

This CD-ROM is a must-have for Step III's new computer-based format. As an OB/GYN resident, I found this CD-ROM useful in studying even in post-call days. I recommend it for its affordability and a useful dry-run especially for non-computer users.

4 out of 5 stars Main ideas in computing.......2004-05-14

Here, I am also commenting on the Supplements to this book, which the publisher periodically issues.

The encyclopedia is excellent for a broad discussion of the hardware and software in computing. It has to regularly come out with Supplements because of the ongoing improvments in the field. All the major contributors to computing are discussed, with a good synopsis for each, explaining his or her bailiwick. The treatment is about 50-50 between hardware and software. The articles tend to discuss the main ideas, and the encyclopedia and its supplements should not be seen as even an attempt at a summary of vendors' offerings.

If you are new to computing and want a general introduction, try consulting articles here. Professionals in computing will already have specialised texts in their subfields, and may not really need this book.

                Book Description

A comprehensive resource on the past, present, and future of space technology

Researchers in optics, materials processing, and telecommunications require a reference that can provide a quick study of a number of basic topics in space science. The two-volume Encyclopedia of Space Science and Technology represents an ambitious collection of the underlying physical principles of rockets, satellites, and space stations; what is known by astronomers about the sun, planets, galaxy, and universe; and the effect of the space environment on human and other biological systems. The Encyclopedia covers a variety of fundamental topics, including:
                * A state-of-the-art summary of the engineering involved in launching a rocket or satellite
                * The control systems involved on the ground, in orbit, or in deep space
                * Manufacturing in space from planetary and other resources

Physicists, astronomers, engineers, and materials and computer scientists, as well as professionals in the aircraft, telecommunication, satellite, optical, and computer industries and the government agencies, will find the Encyclopedia to be an indispensable resource.

                  Book Description

Containing more than 450 entries by some 200 eminent contributors from all over the world, the Encyclopedia of Planetary Sciences is the first book to present this information in an authoritative yet approachable way. This encyclopedia deals with the atmospheres, surfaces and interiors of the planets and moons, and with the interplanetary environment of plasma fields, as well as with asteroids and meteorites. Processes such as accretion, differentiation, thermal evolution and impact cratering form another category of entries. Remote sensing techniques employed in investigation and exploration, such as magnetometry, photometry, and spectroscopy are described in separate articles. In addition the Encyclopedia chronicles the history of planetary science, including biographies of pioneering scientists, and detailed descriptions of all major lunar and planetary missions and programs. The Encyclopedia of Planetary Sciences is superbly illustrated throughout with over 450 line drawings, 180 black and white photographs, and 63 colour illustrations. It will be a key reference source for planetary scientists, astronomers, and workers in related disciplines such as geophysics, geology and the atmospheric sciences. Included in this book is a PC and Mac compatible CD-ROM containing over 200 relevant planetary and related images available from NASA. This CD-ROM has been specially compiled for the Encyclopedia by The United States National Space Science Data Center.

5 out of 5 stars Planetary Science Review.......2001-08-03

This book presents a good discussion of the major elements of planetary science. The sections on the planets themselves (such as 'Mars: Geology') are introductory, as they have limited space. However, as the articles move to more narrow subjects (such as 'Impact Cratering'), they increase in depth. The articles are written by experts in their fields, and the language is kept a non-technical as is possible for a general work. This is a useful reference for those interested in planetary science, from the high school level and up. It is the reference that I reach for when confronted with a subject that I know little about. It should take the interested individual to an intermediate level of understanding of most topics in this field.
