Book Description

The Father certainly doesn't need our praise, yet He prescribes worship as a daily activity. Why? Pastor Jack Hayford shows that God graces His people with worship as a gift, not a demand. Worship liberates God's people to discover genuine wholeness only as they recognize and acknowledge the holiness of God. In this classic work, Hayford examines the lives of more than a dozen biblical figures to describe the fulfilling effects of worship, including seven truths Jesus revealed about the blessings of praise. God's grace fills everything He gives and calls us to do, and this grace overflows in a special way on those who humbly and wholeheartedly worship God.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-03-05

Loved this eye-opening book on worship! It led me to Worship Warrior by Chuck Pierce! Even more awesome!

4 out of 5 stars Classic Hayford!.......2003-10-08

Pastor Jack's practical, down-to-earth, and up-to-Heaven approach was refreshingly helpful and balanced. His understanding of the importance of traditional church music as well as modern music is balanced, fair, and helpful. Pastor Jack's experience as a musician and pastor are inspiring. I found the humility and honesty portrayed in this book equally inspiring and hope to genuinely model and teach the importance of living a life of worship. Pastoral leaders must be informed about the philosophy of worship if they are to properly lead. This book certainly serves its purpose of helping pastors and students to develop a biblical philosophy of worship.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful book about modern worship.......2001-07-19

First off, I must admit that I enjoy reading Jack Hayford's books. He takes a very common sense approach to the Bible, Christianity, and faith. I think that he does a better job than most other pastors of giving practical insight into Christian concepts. In this book, his focus is worship and how it can change our lives.

I enjoyed this book the most because it is a no nonsense explanation of worship. Basically, Dr. Hayford is hoping that this book will help start a reformation of worship in today's Church. Throughout the book, he tries to confront many traditional notions about worship, and its role for the believer, and the Church. In some ways, this book may challenge you, especially if you come from a very traditional denomination. I know that in my case it has made me take a hard look at my role in daily worship, and during church services.

Dr. Hayford's basic premise is that biblically based worship is the vital key to the success of any church. He goes into great detail about what worship is, and is not. Various topics he discusses include musical worship (songs), prayer, communion, and tithing. He uses various examples from the Bible (Abraham, David, Samuel, Peter, and Paul) to illustrate many of his points. Also, he tries to clarify misconceptions about worship that many believers (including myself) may have. For instance, he explains why worship is actually designed for our benefit, and not God's.

I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to find out more about worship, and how it can impact your walk with God. I think that you will find this book stimulating, and cause you to examine your own worship practices and effectiveness.

5 out of 5 stars Worship His Majesty: How Praising the King of Kings Will ..........2001-05-15

This book is great! I wonder why no one has written a review, after the time this book has spent in the market. The book took its theme from the famous song "Majesty", composed by the author himself, and tells about how worship is a two-way interaction between God and men. God is worthy of our worship, of course, but worship is not only meant for Him. God has made worship a way men can receive the blessings and fullness of life from God. The author took several significant examples from the bible, like the lives of Abraham, Moses, and David, and showed how worship had brought them to receive God's promises in their lives, despite their "humane" errors and limitations.

This book should be read by everyone who desired to know God more, and learns how he works in the lives of men through their worship. Hey, there's a whole lot of things we don't understand about worship. This book will shed some light to that. Praise God!!

MEET HATSHEPSUT,
PHAROAH OF EGYPT

Here is an engaging and informative picture-book biography, lushly illustrated by award-winning artist Joseph Daniel Fiedler, of Egypt's only successful female pharaoh.

Hatshepsut gained Egypt's throne when all her male siblings -- including the half brother whom she married -- died. Originally named regent to her nephew, Tuthmosis III, Hatshepsut gradually assumed more and more power, and eventually had herself crowned pharaoh. Since no word existed for a female ruler, Hatshepsut used the male title. She also wore men's clothing and a beard, and referred to herself as "he" as well as "she."

Hatshepsut's reign was a peaceful and prosperous one. She sent an expedition to explore Punt, an exotic land of riches, and built beautiful monuments, including a magnificent temple on which she had artists carve and paint scenes from her life and reign.

Following her death, Tuthmosis III tried to erase evidence of Hatshepsut's reign to make it seem as though he had succeeded his father directly. Catherine M. Andronik explains how, despite this vandalism, archaeologists have been able to piece together the story of this unconventional pharaoh's remarkable and mysterious life.

"Hatshepsut, His Majesty, Herself" is a very good book for children or people who just want a straight forward history of the first succesful female pharoah in ancient Egypt. This was the first book I read of Hatshepsut and I enjoyed it alot. It encouraged me to begin to learn more about her. She was truly a great ruler and worth investigating further. The book consists of a basic history of Hatshepsut and her accomplishments. If you liked this book check out a longer young adult novel "His Majesty, Queen Hatshepsut" by 'Dorothy Sharp Carter'.

Book Description

To be born Egyptian is immense fortune.

Hatshepsut, a thirteen-year-old Egyptian princess, doesn't feet that she is entirely fortunate. After all, she is a girl. She grumbles about taking lessons with her brothers. Why should she study reading and writing, literature, history, and mathematics? As a princess, she will never need to be skilled at these things.
But Hatshepsut little knows what life has in store for her. She will need to know all these things and more. By the time she is fourteen years old, she will be a wife, and shortly thereafter, a queen. The early death of her husband makes Hatshepsut Queen-Regent, ruling jointly with her husband's son -- a son who is only a child, and the child of a concubine at that. Hatshepsut thrives as Queen-Regent, creating opportunities to act for the good of her people and the glory of Egypt. Yet she chafes at sharing her reign with a child. Seizing the supreme opportunity, Hatshepsut names herself Pharaoh, setting aside the young heir to the throne. She rules as King of Upper and Lower Egypt for more than twenty years.
Dorothy Sharp Carter's fictional account is based on the real life of the Pharaoh Hatshepsut. It is a fascinating story of a determined woman who defied extraordinary odds and ruled her people well,

3 out of 5 stars So-So.......2006-04-25

I am very interested in Egyptian History, but this book was very boring. Maybe the fact that reading it was an assignment for school, I don't know. It portrayed Hatshepsut getting more mature throughout the book very well, but the last few chapters seemed very hurried, as though you were reading the epilouge (is that spelled correctly?)If you really loved historical fiction(i-heart-fantasy), this book would be HEAVEN for you.

I absoulutly loved this book. It is so real! The story is written in present tence, which I thought was good. Also, it gave a full scope of living in Egypt amid all the gold and jewels. I would reccomend this book to anyone who likes history and excitment.

4 out of 5 stars It's a good book.......2001-12-10

I read this book when I was in sixth grade. I found most of it fascinating. Highly romantisized, yet based on historical knowledge, it developes in the reader's mind the possible world of one of Egypt's greatest rulers. Albeit the opening is slow, it is actually very well written with a strong main character and equally strong antagonist. Yeah, I liked the love story part of it too, and where she's complaining about how much she hates her husband, his other wife, and their son.

2 out of 5 stars When women were stupid.......2007-07-02

I'm keeping in mind the time when this book was written (1899). Although the story is set during the Tudor reign of England, the behaviour and actions of the female characters are a reflection of what author Charles Major expected from contemporary females. Told from the point of view of a fictional Edwin, we're witness to the love affair of Charles Brandon and Henry VIII's sister, Mary Tudor. It's a surprisingly short book and really there's not much action going on. I read this novel about the same time I read "Janice Meredith", another best seller of the time. Both women were ninnies. Neither had enough brain cells to make a synapse. I've read better books set during the Tudor era and I urge you to look elsewhere if that's what you're looking for. Try Margaret George's "Autobiography of Henry VIII" for example. OTOH, if you're like me and trying to get a feel of what people were reading in other times, you may find this little work interesting.

4 out of 5 stars A great book on history without being a history book.......2000-06-01

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I usually hate history books. It describes all the details of the characters and the time period and really made me feel like I was there, too. I have hated history ever since it was required in college, but this story and the detailed characters have made me long to understand more of the actions of the people involved and I'm now voluntarily going to look into more books on the lives and times of the main kings involved: Henry VIII and Louis XII. I definitely recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Is there anything more exotic than a Hawaiian King's travel?.......2004-07-20

Wonderful historic document. You have to read it bearing in mind when the text was written (there are a lot of thoughts that are considered prejudices today) but apart from that, it's such a magical story! This poor Hawaiian king trying to learn from other monarchies in other countries and trying to convince the world that Hawaii also exists. I really recommend it to fans of traveling, Pacific cultures, monarchies or international affairs.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating story despite prejudices of author.......2004-04-27

This book provides a fascinating insight into a historical adventure that most people are unaware of. King Kalakaua of Hawaii was the first monarch ever to circumnavigate the globe, visiting many of the countries with whom Hawaii had treaties. Kalakaua was a highly educated and intelligent man and an exceptional diplomat who spoke numerous languages including the Queen's English, and courts around the world were highly impressed with his character and knowledge. He also liked to party and could be a bit of a rascal, so there are some quite humorous scenes as well. The author, who travelled with Kalakaua, inserts some rather unfortunate racist judgments in his commentary, which can be hard to stomach, but if one can overlook those, the substance of the story itself is fascinating, and in my opinion would make a great movie!

                      Description:
Historical patterns of forest tent caterpillar defoliation over the period 1938-2002 in the province of Quebec, eastern Canada, were analyzed in relation to forest inventory data. The extent of defoliation over time was largely nonstationary and only somewhat periodic; however six major defoliation episodes could be identified. Individual outbreaks tended to span only 36.6% (+/-13.1% S.E.) of the total area defoliated, suggesting they are frequently terminated before attaining their maximum potential extent. Although outbreaks tended to recur periodically, they were not perfectly synchronized across the province. Two core regions, 14000 and 20000km^2 in size, located in the northwestern, aspen-dominated boreal forest region and the southeastern, maple-dominated mixedwood forest region, were found to exhibit cyclic patterns of defoliation, with periodicities of 9 and 13 years, respectively. These oscillations were characterized by strong second-order negative feedback, suggesting regulation by lagged density-dependent processes. Outbreak cycles in the two core regions were in phase with one another (r=0.39) until 1963, when a sudden, large-scale outbreak collapse occurred in the North during the initial phase of the third cycle. Since that time outbreak oscillations have been completely out of phase (r=-0.16), leading to a persistent wave-like pattern of outbreak spread back and forth between regions along a northwest-southeast axis. Within core regions, cycle amplitude varied in a slow and smooth manner, with the phasing pattern of amplitude modulation differing substantially between regions. Although the timing of population cycle peaks appears to be highly predictable, at least within the core regions, the levels of defoliation experienced during these peaks appears to be unpredictable and may be modulated by factors yet to be identified.

                        Description:
Mnesampela privata is an Australian geometrid moth that is considered to have resource-driven outbreaks. An autumnal oviposition/larval development cycle is considered the ''norm'' in this species, but spring/summer activity has also been observed. This apparent plasticity of phenology and probable concomitant changes in voltinism have not been considered as possible causes of moth outbreaks. We developed GumMoth, a phenological model for M. privata that uses temperature to predict development times of immatures. Photoperiod determines whether individuals undergo direct development or pupal diapause. We used known catch dates of moths (in the same moth-active season or 365-day period) to simulate population phenologies on the Australian mainland (27^o28'S to 38^o14'S) and in Tasmania (40^o54'S to 42^o57'S). GumMoth successfully simulated phenological patterns that agreed with published records and demonstrated for the first time that multivoltinism is possible in M. privata. In seven paired simulations using dates for first and last moth catches, the earliest moth activity resulted in the pupae of four out of 11 generations undergoing diapause, whereas the latest moth activity resulted in pupae of five out of eight generations undergoing diapause (diapause individuals emerged the following moth-active season). Almost two-thirds of offspring of spring/summer active moths reached adulthood within that same moth-active season (i.e. no delay in development), whereas those of autumn active moths always reached adulthood the following moth-active season (i.e. development was delayed). Records from foresters and in the scientific literature confirmed that the more common autumn phenology is supplemented by spring/summer activity in many localities. At half of these localities, populations that required insecticide control or caused substantial defoliation also developed. Because plantation eucalypts are suitable M. privata hosts for only four to five tree-growth seasons after planting, local moth populations must increase quickly if an outbreak is to occur. We suggest that large populations are more likely when plantations are colonised in the first moth-active season after planting and population growth commences in the spring/summer of each subsequent year. Foresters can use catch dates and regional weather data in GumMoth to estimate the number and phenology of generations of M. privata. This information can be used to assess risk posed by regional populations and thereby adjust future surveillance intensity.
