Book Description
he United States Constitution is the basis for our most fundamental rights as Americans, and is a key element in nearly every major legal and political debate ever argued. But how many of us actually understand the language used by our Founding Fathers? Now Linda R. Monk, an award-winning author and journalist, takes us through the Constitution, line by line, to help us comprehend this amazing document. From the Preamble, which she analyzes with inspiration from Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Charlton Heston, and James Madison, to each and every amendment, Monk offers insight, legal expertise, surprising facts and trivia, opposing interpretations, and historical anecdotes to breathe life into this provocative and hallowed document.

the words we live by.......2007-09-04
it was a very informative book, kindof like high school government class all over again.
Carrying on the conversation..........2006-10-14
Linda Monk's book on the American Constitution, `The Words We Live By', is a wonderfully accessible and interesting introduction to the foundational document of the American polity. She starts in her introductory material by presenting the Constitution not as a dry and dusty piece of parchment to be revered but essentially ignored, but rather as an engagement of peoples in open conversation, something that can and should have an impact on the daily life and work of all Americans. Drawing inspiration from Judge Learned Hand, she states, `For the Constitution to have meaning, it must be not only the words we recite, but also the words we live by.'
Monk recognises the importance of the Constitution, and its unique place in history, but does not give it false priority by forgetting its historic underpinnings. The founders who gathered in convention in 1787 brought their backgrounds and training with them, as well as a sense of self-government and an awareness of what might work and not work in the newly formed nation, gained from 150 years of essentially self-rule as colonies.
The framers of the Constitution were not under the illusion that they were creating a perfect document, as Monk states, quoting Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes - `it is an experiment, as all life is an experiment.' The preamble of the Constitution, perhaps the best know part, strives to form `a more perfect union', not a perfect one.
Monk draws information from the Federalist papers, other documents contemporary with the Constitution, and artwork and illustrations to help the text come alive. For each section, be they preamble, article, or amendment, Monk first sets forth the text, and then provides a passage-by-passage commentary. Often this refers to court cases, government structures and procedures, and significant events that helped to shape the Constitution, even as it has worked to shape American society. There are side notes with definitions for key words and terms, quotable quotes from historians as well as historical figures, and text boxes separate from the main text body to draw particular emphasis on points of greater interest in contemporary issues (George Will on the question of term limits for Congress; Benjamin Franklin on property qualifications for voting; etc.).
Monk ends as she began, writing of the Constitution as words to live by in the future. She characterises the ongoing debate as one between different ideas of freedom - some see freedom as freedom from something (government intrusion and more), whereas others see freedom as freedom to achieve something. How this will ultimately be played out on a constitutional level is speculation, as is the conjecture on what may become future amendments to the Constitution.
Overall, this was a fun book to read, informative and interesting. Monk draws text box and side-bar quotations and examples from across the political spectrum and across American history, to give a reasonable balance toward the issues politically. This is useful particularly for high school and undergraduate civics and political science classes, as well as American history classes. It is also good for general readers, and has a layout that shows an awareness of the importance of different colours, images, typefaces and more for keeping visual interest in addition to interest in content.
This will help one live by the words more fully.
Constitution.......2006-01-29
As a student who began an in-depth study of the Constitution this year, this book was my introduction to the Constitution. Never having known that much about the government or Constitution, this book was incredibly helpful in giving a fairly deep overview of what the Constitution meant, clause by clause.
Useful for kids and internet newbies.......2005-07-22
I would recommend this book to two types of folks:
1) If you have kids in junior high or high school. This would be an excellent resource for them in their civics classes in regards to providing an excellent, though shallow, perspective on the Constitution.
2) If you haven't yet required the skills to search the Internet for specific topics or don't possess readibly available access to the Internet.
Ms. Monk does an excellent job with the perspective she provides. My quibble is how thin this volume is, quite frankly I was hoping for more perspective. I do admit I occasionally use it, thus three stars, but I find myself mostly using the Internet or my other books on the Constitution as reference sources rather than Ms. Monk's publication.
Brief overview .......2005-07-20
This book provides an insightful view of the constitution, and clearly articulates the meaning of the passages we hold so dear. It also creates ground for a much deeper appreciation of the form of government to which we submit. Anyone who enjoys politics should read this book-as it not only explains the Constitution, but also the historical significance behind several of its articles.

Book Description
In Jury of One, Shelly Trotter, an able and determined lawyer and a children's rights advocate, is thrust into a world in which she's completely unschooled the criminal court. Her client is a seventeen-year-old accused of killing a policeman, and she begins to suspect that he may have been involved in an undercover operation to entrap dirty cops, though his role in the scheme remains unclear. Was he the target or the baitand what does the prosecution really have against him?
Then comes the shocker: Shelly fears that she has a connection to this boy, something she has kept secret for years, knowledge that she has hidden from her family and friends for most of her adult life. And as the evidence against the boy mounts, she finds that nothing not legal ethics, not a statewide political campaign that could swing in the balancewill stop her from keeping him off death row. For with this client, she is truly a jury of one.

Great book.......2006-08-02
I really enjoyed this book even if Ellis committed several digressions into subjects related to what was happening in the book. Still a good pageturner. After I read this book I went and got his other 3 books. Ellis is somewhere between Grisham and Scott Turrow IMHO.
Grab a pillow - this book is GUARANTEED to put you to sleep .......2006-07-20
Calling this novel a legal thriller would be generous. I'm not feeling generous, not after reading this woefully inadequate third novel by David Ellis. Ellis, in Jury of One, is repetitious and long-winded. Whether he repeats the facts of the case in every other chapter because he feels his audience is slow-witted or to keep track of the plot himself, I don't know. What I do know is that each chapter should move the story FORWARD. I would say that his recitations about Adoption Law, Criminal Law and Procedure, and Evidence belong in text books (not novels), but much of them are completely wrong. Mr. Ellis, self-defense is an affirmative defense, meaning the burden of proof shifts to the defendant. Even if you are a David Ellis fan, you'd do well to skip this novel. If you choose to read it, grab a box of tissues, because you will be bored to tears.
often silly and painful in its dragged out state, but still worth reading.......2006-03-08
My primary beef with this book is the fact that most of this story relies on the defendant not saying anything. I am not giving away any of the story by saying this. Alex, a young boy, is in prison from the very start. Shelly is his lawyer leaping to his defense. Alex is made out as a pretty smart young lad. Only he has committed a stupid small crime that snowballed and builds up to the point where he is in prison facing murder charges. Most of the rest of this story revolves around Shelly trying to unfold exactly what is going on. So if you look at the whole story and think about what would be left if Alex had told the truth to start with, you would pretty much have nothing left.
So aside from being very well written, as all David Ellis' books are, you are left with pretty much nothing. The story and the mystery go poof when obviously the predictable ending comes to pass. I feel that the writing here is excellent. This story shows that Ellis is better than just about any other writer working in the genre business today. Combine that with a sadly under-whelming story, and you have a readable, sometimes painful story.
4.5 Star Legal Thriller.......2006-03-04
This is what a legal thriller should be. A dead-on, courtroom novel, with plot-twists aplenty, scintilating cross-examinations, and revelations that not even the most jaded or experienced readers will see coming. The story's first half is a set-up for the courtroom drama that concludes the story, and the ending reminds me of Turow's ending for Presumed Innocent in terms of how revealing the secret is that lies at the heart of the matter.
An excellent read, and the only reason that it doesn't get five stars is because there's not enough humor, and the lead attorney is more than stiff.
A Sensational Read - Guaranteed!!!.......2004-09-20
This was my first experience with a David Ellis novel and it left me enthralled. The story is complex and complicated and takes a while to gather steam, but once all the elements have been brought to bear it is an absolute can not put it down read.
It is hard to tell too much about the story without giving away some of the many twists and turns in the plot. The basic story line is that a young woman lawyer who is a children's rights advocate finds herself representing a former client who is charged with the murder of a police officer. The case seems relatively straight forward from the prosecutions's point of view and difficult to defend. But in this tale, things are seldom what they seem. The characters are well drawn and the dialogue is written so well you can hear the voices. Couple that with an outstanding plot and you have a hard to beat combination.
David Ellis has written a legal thriller that is all of that and a bit more.

He is a good man, a brilliant corporate executive, an honest, handsome family man admired by men and desired by women. But a lifetime ago Ben Tyson was a lieutenant in Vietnam. There the men under his command committed a murderous atrocity--and together swore never to tell the world what they had done. Now the press, army justice, and the events he tried to forget have caught up with Ben Tyson. His family, his career, and his personal sense of honor hang in the balance. And only one woman can reveal the truth of his past--and set him free.
Customer Reviews:
A prelude for things to come.......2007-09-17
I would have liked this book more if I read it before the invention of John and Susan Sutter and, even more obviously, Paul Brenner and John Corey. It is clear that Ben Tyson was the seed for each of the male characters and he is like a wild cross of all three. His blood was as blue as Sutter's, his wit and honor are all Brenner, and the rest is all Corey. Marcy is certainly the first stab as Susan Sutter, who I regard as the finest character Demille ever wrote.
That said, it should not detract from a unique and disturbing story. Like many early Demille works, it takes its time painting detailed character portraits and it allows the scenery to breathe. Unfortunately for me, I read the first 200 pages in the winter before finally finishing the last 500+ in the summer. Like some other readers, I had a hard time staying with this one, but was thrilled when I did pick it back up. I back-read a lot and it wasn't tough to remember who was who.
Some parts of the book were long-winded and maybe unnecessary, but it all worked in the end. Ditto some characters like Chet Brown, Col Levin, even Sister Teresa. Lots of loose ends, imo. As a person born in the year this took place, I won't pretend to understand a Vietnam vet's mind. I do challenge some of the reaches Demille took as far as Tyson's unwillingness to open up to his family about his role in the massacre. I also wonder why he'd want to bring that upon himself when he was given an out by Major Harper. A lot of it seemed contrived, but it made for a good character and story, hence the "fiction" tag that accompanies the book. ;-)
If there was a disappointment, it was that it took its time for 737 pages only to end in an instant inside of a couple paragraphs. I almost think Demille was up against a deadline and was told to end it already. The end was frantic, especially with regard to his family situation, and then the screen goes to black. I'd have liked a few more pages to see some things out. The storytelling was uneven in spots, especially when it involved him and his wife. One minute they are close and sticking together, the next they are apart, then together, etc... not a lot of explanation around the changes, either. Still, there was enough to keep you occupied.
A very good effort with an intriguing premise, but not Demille's best, imo. The Gold Coast remains his Gold Standard for me, followed by the underrated Up Country. MOH is definitely a step above the corny John Corey action novels and is probably on par with Charm School. It is a worthwhile read that holds up 20 years after its first print.
He's Done It Again.......2007-03-09
Some of his books tend to drag to me for the first couple of hundred pages. Then once the story is set up, they take off and don't let up. I agree with other reviewers, this book had some of the greatest courtroom scenes ever written. Another excellent story Mr. Demille.
DeMille's best? Maybe........2007-02-19
Wow! You may have mixed feelings about the ending, but you'll be fascinated throughout. Tremendous courtroom dramatics.
Simply DeMille's Best!.......2006-07-06
Word of Honor is not only arguably DeMille's finest novel it may well be one of the best novels you'll ever read. It quite simply crawls into your gut, sticks to your ribs and stay with you whole as you digest the significance of its powerful message.
And it's one hell of a read!
Ben Tyson is called to disclose the actions of his platoon twenty years after the Battle of Hue in a court of military law. Intermingled with flashbacks and back stories regarding a combat incident his unit handled during an extreme instant, a stressful moment about an 'event' between 'brothers'.
The courtroom scenes in this book are quite simply brilliantly crafted.
Tyson is a tight, faceted personality possessing the wry sarcasm and humor and open intelligence that only DeMille can create. Lucky for us he doesn't shower this attention on just his main character since everyone has a compelling, vital story to tell.
How can those of us who weren't there understand such complex feeling? Yet, DeMille, makes us understand, he transports our souls with the written word unlike no other and quietly says....this was our reality.
What a GREAT story!!.......2006-06-30
I've read some of DeMille's recent work but not any of the earlier stuff...until now. A friend recommended Word of Honor to me, indicating the book contains some of the best courtroom scenes ever written. Having read the book in just about one sitting, I'd have to concur. The book is fast paced and near impossible to put down once you're into the flow of the story. The characters and setting are great, as is the dialogue throughout the book.
The book is concerned with atrocities committed in Vietnam by troops under the command of Ben Tyson, a man who's achieved success in middle age in his career, living comfortably in Long Island. When a book is released which tells the story of the atrocities, Tyson is dragged back into the Army and courtmartialed. The way the 'truth' of what really happened is revealed over the course of the book through the eyes of various participants is handled masterfully by DeMille.
I highly recommend this book!

Book Description
For anyone interested in the issues arising from computer malfunctions and, more perniciously, from misuse, this new edition of Computer Ethics is right on the mark. Widely acclaimed for its readability and its balanced and authoritative coverage, Computer Ethics has been thoroughly revised and updated with new anecdotes, new revelations, and lively discussion of the ethical, social, and professional issues arising from the computer revolution, such as computer crime, software theft, hacking, viruses, and the invasion of privacy.
An entirely rewritten first chapter is followed by expanded chapters that contain compelling new case studies and analyses. A new final section contains 10 hypothetical scenarios for group discussion. Copies of the ACM Code of Ethics and the ACM-IEEE Computing Curricula are included in the appendixes.
Tom Forester is Senior Lecturer in the School of Computing and Information Technology at Griffith University, Queensland, Australia, and is editor or author of seven books on the social aspects of computers. Perry Morrison lectures in psychology at the National University of Singapore.

A small sample.........2001-08-20
This is a republication of an old translation.
If you haven't read Kepler's own words, then this book will be both more and less than you expected. It is both a mathematical and philosophically speculative text, which in some sections can get quite technical.(Warning: the title is a bit deceiving. Only part of the Epitome is included.)
I would only give 3 stars to this book, except that english translations of Kepler's works are very few, and this book is the most financially accessible of those currently on the market. I therefore recommend it as a good first exposure.
There's no substitute to reading the original words of great thinkers, especially in gaining insight into their way of approaching the world.
