5 out of 5 stars Real-world tools for the courtroom........2000-11-28

Teaches the nuts and bolts of trial practice in a crystal clear, highly informative way, starting with creating the trial notebook and progressing through the entire sequence of the trial.

This is not a "Nutshell" for first-year law students; it's a 700-page How-To manual for anybody and everybody who wants to be effective in the courtroom. Written in plain English for lawyers whose understanding of "litigation" (McElhaney mocks the word) may be still be swimming in law-school abstractions.

McElhaney's examples allow the reader to understand HOW a lawyer's "magic" works on the jury, and --when something goes wrong-- why it goes wrong. Chock full of vivid word pictures that drive home the subtleties involved in picking a jury, taking an effective deposition, negotiating through the rules of evidence, impeaching a witness, and so on. The book is a toolbox, and McElhaney is a master teacher of his craft.

The book somehow manages to be chatty yet concise, educational AND thoroughly entertaining. Representative chapter titles include "The Horse Shed," "Trouble in the Woodshed," "The Perry Mason Trap," and "Getting Along With Judges." All good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Got More Than Expected.......2006-10-03

My small Indiana "hick town" has recently become the target of a proposed Vera Sun ethanol fuel refinery site. Had it not been for Ms. Perlman's book "Citizen's Primer for Conservation Activism: How to Fight Development in Your Community" I would have sat on my hands and been too timid to take on Big Brother. Having read it I am now involved and prepared to at least put up one helluva fight against it. I was attracted to Ms. Perlman's book because of the words "primer" and "community" in the title. I needed something elementary, something easy, to guide me and educate me in the basics of fighting development in my small community. Her book did just that and more. I now have a foundation of knowledge to build on. Did her example fit my situation perfectly? Am I ready to take on every big corporation in a big metropolis? No, but I feel informed enough to know where to start digging for information and places to go for answers if need be. I didn't get the impression that Ms. Perlman's intention was for this to be "THE" book on conservation activism and one should look no further. I may end up with an ethanol plant in my back yard, literally, but I won't hold Ms. Perlman or her book responsible if my community loses the fight. I feel more empowered as a citizen and come away with more determination to exercise my rights and make my vote count in the upcoming election. This book was the perfect "first step" for me and for others whom I have shared with.
Ms. Perlman has taken the "fire in her belly" and produced something of value. I hope she writes even bigger and better "guide books" on conservation activism. I'll be watching for them.

2 out of 5 stars Wasted potential.......2005-09-01

I was excited about using this book in my own non-profit work---until I had a chance to actually read it. It is only applicable to certain types of activists who fight their fights in small and/or rural communities.

I'm happy that Ms. Perlman and her friends were able to stop counterproductive redevelopment in their own community. However, I am also concerned that she generalizes too readily about the immediate applicability of this book to all people's situations.

Like other reviewers have previously noted, she does not recognize that different environments need adjustments in organizing strategies. This is an embarrassing mantra for somebody who positions herself as an author and activist.

One of my long-standing pet peeves is activists who are ultimately in love with the idea of `being progressive' rather than actually following through on it. Because they will not concede the flaws in their own arguments, these people are often more shallow than the society which they seek to change.

Yes, it worked for her, but many of the tactics would be impractical in a metropolis where activists are expected to work through and with boards in order to impact social change. Increasing gentrification of `redeveloping' urban centers means smart development policies can be a hot seller there too---with the right sales pitch.

Her social justice prescriptions aren't going to provide anything to people who cannot use the remedies in their own organizing environments. Unlike John P. Kretzmann and John L. McKnight (authors of `Building communities from the inside out') she generalizes about communities. What was her point of writing a `practice' book if the tenets cannot actually be put into practice?

This book would be better off repackaged as a handbook for rural and small suburban communities. It has no applicability for the realities of organizers in larger communities. Selling it as a general organizing book does a tremendous disservice to the people who are seriously committed to helping all communities organize.

5 out of 5 stars Citizen's Primer for Conservation Activism: How to Fight Dev.......2005-05-16

Pearlman has provided an inspiring and essential guide to preserving valued natural land, especially when under developmental pressure from characteristically greed driven developers who rarely have any vested interest in the post-development future of the land they desicrate.

A must read for caring citizens who will learn thatdevotion and extraordinary teamwork can truly work miracles!

5 out of 5 stars Fighting the Good Fight.......2005-05-16

The last two statements in Judith Perlman's book, "CONSERVATION ACTIVISM, - "Keep fighting the good fight. The universe will thank you.", should not be taken lightly. Keep fighting" is the most important as it is the theme throughout her book - never give up! Universe can be brought down to state, county, township, etc. - even your own backyard.

The first statement, on the cover - before the title is: "Citizen Primer for" (CONSERVATION ACTIVISM), also explains it all. This is a guide for the preservation of natural areas. Judith Perlman's book will be used by untold numbers of individuals and groups involved with (or planning to be involved with) small and big skirmishes regarding the preservation of unique areas. The subtitle explains that: "How to fight development in your community."

Whether the "good fight" pertains to small local governments (as her book has) or to large governments, this book is a valuable guide. The entire text from the cover to the closing statements is well organized and written in a manner that citizens can understand and follow.

All too often, we are told that "you can't fight City Hall." This thought is put to rest in Judith Perlman's book.

4 out of 5 stars A Strong Primer - If You're in a Small Wisconsin Town.......2005-03-30

Judith Perlman has successfully battled development projects, working for the preservation of natural areas and the defeat of sprawling subdivisions. She was involved in three efforts around her small town in Wisconsin, and two were successful while the third was in progress at the time of writing. Perlman's experience makes for a book that can be useful for those who are up against similar battles in their own communities. Some of Perlman's advice is fairly obvious, such as exercising your constitutional rights at public meetings or building coalitions with sympathetic organizations, though Perlman fleshes out these suggestions with strong practical details. Perlman also has some not-so-obvious recommendations as well, such as filming council meetings, or hiring lawyers to simply concoct stalling tactics when a governmental body is trying to rush a vote on a development plan. Such simple tactics can really alter the power balance when local citizens are up against developers and their pocketed local politicians.

However, in the introduction to this book Perlman states that her goal is to extend her personal experiences and successes into general recommendations that can be used in many different types of situations. Unfortunately, this is only true if your battle is in a political environment that is not especially different from that faced by Perlman. Granted, some of her tactics will work anywhere, such as setting up 501(c)(3) tax status or making use of media resources and local experts. But the biggest forms of government ever faced by Perlman and her colleagues were small town planning boards and county commissions. The book offers no practical knowledge on battles that would take place in much different political environments, such as large cities, or public lands in which state or even federal government agencies would be involved. Additionally, the book's expertise is only based on resisting relatively small residential developments, and battles against large-scale commercial or industrial interests would also face much different political realities. So in the end, this book is certainly a practical and detailed primer for the conservation activist, but it is based on limited examples and the details apply mostly to very specific types of local efforts. Book Description

Foster Care Law: A Primer introduces social work professionals and attorneys to the most significant and typical legal problems that may arise from the moment a neglected-abuse case enters the foster care system, to the child's exit from it. The Primer looks at law through the eyes of the main participants: the foster child, the foster parents, biological parents, public foster care agencies, private foster care agencies, and the court. It describes the legal relationships that each has to the other. In explaining the problems most likely to occur, the Primer notes the legal authorities that must be referenced and ways that courts and legislatures have resolved the issues.

There are numerous aids to help social work professionals cope with the legal milieu: a glossary of legal terms; an appendix that describes how to find cases, law journals, and legislative material; and a flow chart describing the legal life of a foster care case. Moreover, the text provides reader-friendly descriptions of the legal context.

Lawyers will welcome explanations of the intricate legal relationships between such entities as public foster care agencies, their private contractors who provide foster homes, federal funding agencies, and the courts. A good selected bibliography and an appendix dedicated to liability issues will give any lawyer a running start to resolve a particular foster care case.

There are no other books that give an overview of this complex field. That is because each state has its own practices, laws, and local rules that govern both foster care systems and court process. The authors have untangled this confusing web, and shown the patterns that prevail overall. The book will work for anyone trying to make sense of the foster care system, in any state.

        4 out of 5 stars Filling a gap.......2005-02-03

This is the first book I've seen that addresses the important, and often confusing legal underpinnings of Foster Care in a manner that is helpful to those not in the legal profession. It's a must for anyone involved in the Foster Care system.
This book may help to ease the trauma often experienced by beginning foster care social workers, new foster parents and others who may be flung unprepared into a complicated legal system where attornies speak in an unfamiliar jargon. It can be read cover-to-cover or used as a handy reference to important topics such as liability, health care for foster children, and the rights of various parties. This little book can be stuck into a brief case and brought out to read while waiting for a case to be called in court. It's readable, reasonable, and filled with very important information.

5 out of 5 stars An Expert Overview and Extremely Readable.......2005-01-19

This book is a terrific overview of the law of foster care, written by two of the leading experts in the field. It is a perfect introduction for social workers, lawyers, and others, and is a useful reference as well. And it is highly readable, not the ordinary legal treatise.

Different sections of the book look at the relevant law from different perspectives - that of a child, the foster parents, biological parents, a public foster care agency, a private foster care agency, and a court. As a result, the authors have done most of the hard work for the reader, organizing the material of most interest to each reader into just a few chapters and providing more detail in a very logical and easy to find format. As a result, the book is perfect for non-professionals as well as professionals. This book belongs on the shelf of everyone with an interest or involvement in foster care.

                Book Description

Modeling the Environment is the first introductory textbook for a technique of rapidly growing importance. It requires little or no mathematical background, and is appropriate for undergraduate environmental students as well as professionals new to modelling. Developed from the author's own introductory course, it is classroom-tested and represents an important contribution to the field of system dynamics.

Modeling techniques that allow managers and researchers to see in advance the consequences of actions and policies are becoming increasingly important to environmental management. The models produced are vital analytical tools that aid the policy-setting and implementation process, and help us to understand how environmental systems respond to management interventions.

Modeling the Environment is a basic introduction to one of the most widely known and used modeling techniques, system dynamics. The book is designed to build the skills of students as they progress from learning fundamental ideas to constructing models of increasing complexity. Written in a clear and comprehensible style, the book:

                .

In addition, the book contains more than 300 figures and model illustrations, and provides a guide to an interactive website where students can use the text to "navigate" management flight simulators ? models of both real and hypothetical systems developed by the author. The book also contains appendixes that help students review the necessary math, and which provide additional concepts and exercises for further study.

5 out of 5 stars Great interdisciplinary book on environmental modeling.......2000-05-24

A highly readable introduction to environmental modeling. What distinguishes the book from other environmental science and environmental modeling works is its interdisciplinary treatment. In particular, the models integrate the physical world and the world of human behavior. Far too many environmental models fail to close the feedbacks between human behavior and the state of the environment, instead taking waste inputs or resource use as exogenous. This book helps students learn to model human behavior (social and economic) as an integral part of the ecological system. The models and software mean the book encourages active learning, and enable students to explore important issues on their own if they choose.

3 out of 5 stars Modeling the Environment.......2000-04-24

This book is easy to read and contains clear examples of how to use stella software to model the environment. The marvel here is the software, not the book. For the software timid, it might suppliment the software users guide.

                    Book Description

Nonpoint-source pollution (NPSP) poses a special challenge to society's ability to manage its collective environmental good - especially surface and groundwater quality. Since there is no `point', such as an outfall pipe, from which the pollution is being discharged and can be measured, pollution can reach the ambient environment without being monitored. Since management of air and water polution requires the definition and enforcement of limits on discharges or the imposition of fees on those discharges, inability to measure limits our ability to manage this environmental problem. This book presents a state-of-the-art review and discussion of economists' efforts to resolve this major problem and attempts to provide a way of working around it. The book sets forth the theoretical issues, modeling, and the actual programs set up to confront this issue.

                      Book Description

Volume 1: Econometric General Equilibrium Modeling presents an econometric approach to general equilibrium modeling of the impact of economic policies. Earlier approaches were based on the "calibration" of general equilibrium models to a single data point. The obvious disadvantage of calibration is that it requires highly restrictive assumptions about technology and preferences, such as fixed input-output coefficients. These assumptions are contradicted by the massive evidence of energy conservation in response to higher world energy prices, beginning in 1973. The econometric approach to general equilibrium modeling successfully freed economic policy analysis from the straitjacket imposed by calibration.

As a consequence of changes in energy prices and new environmental policies, a wealth of historical experience has accumulated over the past two decades. Interpreted within the framework of the neoclassical theory of economic growth, this experience provides essential guidelines for future policy formation. Volume 2: Energy, the Environment, and Economic Growth presents a new econometric general equilibrium model of the United States that captures the dynamic mechanisms underlying growth trends and responses to energy and environmental policies. Jorgenson uses the model to analyze the impacts of environmental regulations on US economic growth and tax policies for controlling US emissions of carbon dioxide.

                        Book Description

This book begins by introducing the conceptual and contextual dimensions of sustainability and sustainable development. The authors then propose a sustainable human settlement model and elaborates on the methodology for its formulation, development and application. This model is used to assess and forecast the sustainability of urban communities by analyzing changes in the availability of open spaces and water, and variations in the rate of waste generation. It concludes with suggestions for further research.

                            Book Description

The Asia–Pacific Integrated Model (AIM) brings together more than 20 computer simulation models for development and analysis of policy in such diverse fields as climate change mitigation, air pollution abatement, and ecosystem preservation. This first book in a series on the development of AIM focuses on climate change issues and the evaluation of policy options to stabilize the global climate. It presents an overview of the models developed to date, their structure, and the results and analyses presented to policymakers and researchers at the levels of individual Asian countries, the Asia–Pacific region, and the world at large. The contents vary in scope from local to global issues, with discussions of the effects of climate policies, cost analyses of climate policies with their effects on trade, and global scenario analyses. Also included are impact analyses and the effects of promoting environmental technologies.

                                Book Description

The primary objective of Energy and Environmental Policy Modeling is to introduce a variety of recent energy-environmental modeling concepts, and to provide an overview of these modeling concepts. Another major objective of the book is the application of management science techniques to energy and environment policy issues which have expanded dramatically over the last twenty-five years: the results from these applications have become increasingly relied upon by those making energy and environmental decisions. Thus, an overview of some of the most interesting work in this field on some of the biggest contemporary policy issues is a worthy objective. In this respect, policy issues are discussed in the following conceptual modeling frameworks: end-use modeling, integrating supply and demand, aggregate energy-economy interactions, and multi-sector energy-economy interactions.
Hence the book begins with policy studies. First there is a chapter on oil resource depletion and technological change by John Rowse. Two articles on electric sector restructuring follow, by William Hogan and Hung-po Chao/Stephen Peck. The first section is followed by four chapters motivated by the debate over appropriate climate change policies: one by Richard Richels, Jae Edmonds, Howard Gruenspecht, and Tom Wigley on the implications of different carbon emission trajectories; one by Stephen Peck and Thomas Telsberg on appropriate emissions trajectories under uncertainty; one by Susan Swinehart on the potential of tree planting as a climate policy response; and one by Gunter Stephan on inter-generational discounting. Finally, the book ends with a chapter by Tom Rutherford on the sequence of linear complimentarity problem technique for solving general equilibrium problems, and one on the International Energy Network by Leo Schrattenholzer, an institution managed jointly by Schrattenholzer and Alan Manne. The work of Professor Alan Manne is heavily referenced in every chapter of this book.
