5 out of 5 stars The Man Who Raised Our Consciousness.......2002-10-14

15 years before this book appeared, the author, born in Austria but converted to a love of Victorian architecture upon his arrival in the US, produced "The Gingerbread Age," the first popular volume that dared to express admiration for a period in building then considered the nadir of the art. In his Foreword to this work he talks of the "torrent of fan mail" that followed. It's not saying too much to maintain that his work was responsible for the eventual revival in Victorian architecture which began with the hippies creating Painted Ladies in '70's San Francisco and swept the nation in the mid-'80's. Having established the true quality of post-Greek-Revival, pre-World-War-I houses, he turns here to a deeper analysis and description of the different major styles--Gothic, Italianate, octagons, Mansards, Queen Anne, Richardson Romanesque. Lavishly illustrated with bw photographs, floor plans, and reproductions of period pictures, its text written in everyday language with little specialized jargon, and provided with a large appendix listing where to view existing Victorians and a sound list of books to go on to, the book concentrates chiefly on exteriors, though some views of notable rooms are included. If you're looking for good basic overviews of domestic building of the era, Maass's two books are indispensable to your collection. As a social historian, I consult them often.

5 out of 5 stars Presents fascinating architectural coverage.......2001-10-12

Over two hundred black and white illustrations blends an architectural survey with a history of Victorian times from 1840-1900, examining the many styles of town and country homes of the times and describing both interiors and exteriors. The Victorian Home In America presents fascinating architectural coverage.

Book Description

With hundreds of recipes for some of the most popular and enduring high-fire glazes used today, this reference will prove a boon to ceramicists who want to master this complex aspect of the art. Author John Britt, who recently served as Clay Coordinator at the respected Penland School of Crafts, has personally tested many of the recipes himself, and carefully reviews every one. He offers a thorough examination of glaze materials, chemistry, and tools, and presents the basics of mixing, application, and firing procedures. There’s specific information on each type of glaze, including copper, iron, shino, salt/soda, crystalline, and more. An exhaustive index of subjects and a separate index of glaze recipes will help ceramicists find what they need, quickly and easily.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars On my "must own" list.......2007-08-27

I discovered this book, AFTER painstakingly researching, gathering and testing glaze recipes to arrive at my glaze pallet. My condensed list of gathered glazes that work well and that I enjoy are all in this book. I could have saved so much time had I just got this book to start with. For anybody interested in glaze mixing, I recommend it. It contains recipes from potters who you see often which is nice. Ever want to how they got that color or effect? You can see their recipes and see for yourself.

My only wish, and it's minimal considering, is that there was a picture of a test tile for every glaze recipe given. As it is, there are still quite a few examples, but you still have to do some testing on your own to see what they others do. It covers mixing, testing, and firing very well too.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-04-04

I own many ceramics books and I think that this is my favorite! Unlike most books, it has photos of every glaze recipe. It has photos of melt tests for many different chemicals. Overall amazing book!!!

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate guide.......2005-08-02

this book is the ceramic's bible for high fire glazes. Well organized with beautiful photos, this book answers every question a person might have. The book contains hundreds of glazes with ample photos for reference, a must have for any potter

5 out of 5 stars A highly practical reference especially for ceramic artists .......2004-11-13

The Complete Guide To High-Fire Glazes is a highly practical reference especially for ceramic artists - potters and sculptors who glaze their work, put it in a kiln, and then wait and see what comes out. Written by a practicing ceramicist of 20 years' experience, The Complete Guide To High-Fire Glazes uses full-color photographs, charts, and extensive detail to instruct artists in exactly what to expect when placing their work under fire. From technical information about the oxides that make up glazes, to a walkthrough of all aspects of cone 10 glaze-making including mixing the glaze and firing procedures for fuel and electronic kilns, to means of controlling a kiln's firing temperature and atmosphere for each type of glaze, hundreds of glaze recipes, and much more, The Complete Guide To High-Fire Glazes is a "must-have" for any dedicated ceramicist and a treasure simply to browse for its wealth of beautiful ceramic works for everyone else.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Potters.......2004-10-13

Potters are largely known as a generous group. However, there are a few clay artists whose working methods are kept like a closely guarded secret. If there were any secrets with regard to high fire ceramics, John Britt has shed light on a range of materials and processes that will help aspiring ceramists working in this challenging area. Some of the topics covered by Mr. Britt include raw materials, mixing, application, firing, and glaze recipes. The chart for limits and firing cycles are especially informative. In addition to the illustrations, I also a appreciate the photographic images of the pottery and sculpture. They are well lit and in full color and provide an example of the glaze color and texture. I highly recommend "The Complete Guide to High-Fire Glazes." It is a must read for potters.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good Book for Beginners.......2005-06-01

The emphasis of this book is surface decoration techniques in general. Most of the ceramics techniques in this book you will already know something about if you have had a good ceramics class. If the topics listed are new to you, then this book is a great introduction. If you've already been exposed to them, then this book does not take you farther.

There is not a lot of specific low-temperature information, other than a few recipes (which can be quite useful). In particular, I was hoping for a book that would help me approach the effects of high temperature glazes when working with a low temperature kiln, how to modify a high temperature glaze recipe to be suitable for lower temperature work, how to do glaze calculations, etc.

For an introductory book, it is very good, with good photos, etc. I'm giving it 3 stars simply because it is only introductory.

There are more thorough treatements of surface decoration in ceramics, like Hopper's _Making Marks_. And there are better coverages of ceramics in general that include this surface decoration information, such as Peterson's _Craft & Art of Clay_, which is much larger, but can (at this writing) be purchased inexpensively from discounted booksellers listed through the Amazon page.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE this beautiful and informative book........2001-08-24

I would love to take one of her college courses because Lynn Peters presents material clearly, concisely, and makes it seem like fun! The photographs are beautiful and very inspiring. The first time through I just looked at the pictures and captions. The second time through I read the lessons with pictures step-by-step. Third time, I read every word, and I know I'll refer to it again and again. I appreciated her simple, straightforward style of writing, and how she didn't bog down on details that don't make a lot of difference. If she wrote about it, it is useful info.

5 out of 5 stars Best resource for learning low-fire clay decoration.......2000-06-15

This is absolutely the best resource for learning low-fire clay decoration. The book is in full-color & is packed beautiful example pieces. The author covers everything you need to know in an easy to understand manner. Surface decoration techniques include slips, terra sigillata, underglazes, glazes, maiolica, china paints, decals, & lusters. Formulas for some of these are included by volume & percentage. Seven step-by-step projects that demonstrate use of slips, sgraffito, cutouts, decals, underglazes & maiolica help you to apply what you have learned. A glossary, cone-firing range chart, & resource list are a great bonus. Numerous examples of each style are given in individual galleries throughout the book. I found them all an inspiration. Captions for each piece give information on the artist, clay type, technique & cone.

5 out of 5 stars This is incredible!.......1999-06-07

Where did Lynn Peters come from, and why is this the first I have heard of her? Wow! I have been looking for this book all my career! My students next semester and every semester after that will read this book. Everything I was never exactly sure about is in this book, from maiolica to cone temperatures, and all points in between. All of us ceramics instructors owe a giant hug of thanks to Ms. Peters.

5 out of 5 stars A high-fired endorsement of this low-fire instructional........1999-06-07

As a ceramics instructor at a small art school, I am constantly searching for a suitable text for my students, even going so far as to consider authoring one myself! Fortunately, the world has been spared my awkward diction, and has been blessed with this wonderful instructional text by Lynn Peters. I have been an admirer of Peters' work for some time now, and was delighted to see that she had documented her pursuits. The anecdotal theme of the text even had me reading for its literary quality alone! The photos are wonderful, and provide fantastic insight into the actual process of creating ceramic art. I highly recommend this tome to all instructors and students, and will continue to do so until Peters blesses us with my desired sequel! Kudos!

1 out of 5 stars this book is horrible.......2003-12-16

Around my studio we had a copy of this book that no one would take and everyone laughed at. The work shown in the book is terrible- i mean really really bad art- dated and just ugly. The glazes are dated too- some even using lead (a poison that should only be used if you really know what you are doing). The only plus i can say for this book is that it has luster recipes -something i've never seen anywhere else(it's made of frit and bismouth subnitrate or something) all in all BUY A DIFFERENT BOOK! there are much better ones out there or start getting magazines (ceramics monthly and claytimes) that always have lots of glaze recipes and articles.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting and technical, but not much help for beginners.......2003-12-05

I purchased throwing techniques and decorating techniques from the same author and found both books to be wonderful. My skill level went far beyond what I could currently do in a matter of weeks using the techniques listed in the book. However, this book failed to impress me. The illustrations were nice, and it provides good detail for making and applying your own glazes, but unless you own your own set of kilns and have a workshop, this book is best to be borrowed from a friend or checked out from the library.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent jumping off point starter book..........2003-01-09

This and the authors book Decorating Techniques are two books I wouldn't be without even after decades of working with clay and making mostly Raku bowls. I love the photos and text and encourage would be clay workers to get both books. This is not a book for the timid or someone who needs grade school instructions. But if you have a sense of adventure and want a good starting or jumping off point then buy both books.

There is as the author shares, something so wonderful about working with clay and seeing something go from a slab of clay to something with form and then colour(s). And then seeing what we have created with our own hands grace our environment. Raw clay that takes form and now holds food, drink, flowers or air.

Book Description

Glazing pottery is an ancient process, dating back 25,000 years, yet is a medium and art form that is still being explored and advanced today. So many variables go into creating a beautiful glaze--from ingredients to application to firing--that their recipes are prized among potters.

This breathtaking collection of work from 53 ceramic artists goes beyond a mere gallery of their work, inviting readers into their studios to share their insights into the aesthetics of ceramic surfaces as well as the formulas for some of their most successful glazes.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Smashingly Good.......2005-02-19

My husband and I have met Susan Peterson and many of the potters that are in the book. The book presents works by the artist as they would present them to a friend. The photos and writings really put the glaze recipes in focus.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!.......2004-10-15

I love this book and use it often as a reference for glazes. I appreciate the broad range of glazes offered, and the fact that this book doesn't cater only to potters, and "functional" ceramics. There's a variety of functional and sculptural styles that offer inspiration for any artist.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT RANGE AND SUCCINCT DEPTH.......2001-12-06

Peterson chooses a wide variety of functional and sculptural work, from low fire through high fire, and has the artist explain their processes and give recipes. What more could you want! As a ceramic artist, it takes going to a lot of workshops, talking to a lot of artists, and reading a lot of books to get the breadth of information she puts forward in a succinct and visually pleasing manner.

The pieces chosen represent a thoughtful variety of work being done in both functional and sculptural ceramics. Each piece is superlative in its relationship between surface and form. As a ceramic artist I found myself with many ideas and left with the resources to explore and execute those ideas. It was like going to a really great show and being told all the artist's recipes and secrets.

While not exhaustive of information (see Dan Rhodes), it presents everything in a very visually appealing manner while not losing technical information. This is to be expected from the author of the classic "The Craft and Art of Clay."

Susan Peterson does it again!

2 out of 5 stars Not Exactly Smashing.......2001-11-14

I was greatly disappointed with this glossy glaze/coffee table book. I could not honestly imagine anyone would be interested in re-creating the glazes used on the second-rate ceramics pictured here. Sure, the photos are nice and the layout is attractive, but the selected works are mostly sculptural, with the glazes being not really essential to the focus of the work.

The book is thoughtfully organized by maturing temperatures of the glazes, and recipes are given. I was suprised to see so many commercial glazes, stains and clay bodies used. The whole thing came across as a come-on for Guild.com and its pottery supply company sponsers.

Book Description

Ash glaze, as the name suggests, is a glaze derived from ashes. The earliest such glazes can be traced back to the Shang period in China (c. 1500 B.C.), and it is thought they were produced accidentally, the result of white-hot wood ash being carried through the kiln with the draft of the fire and settling onto the pots, where the searing white heat melted it to a glass. Three thousand years later, wood ash remains an important and immensely popular feature of pottery glaze making.

For the modern potter, the satisfaction of working with ash glazes comes from following an ancient tradition as well as from using materials that occur naturally. The results of different wood ashes often vary dramatically, making it possible to achieve a wide range of unique finishes. Even wood from the same species of tree garnered just miles apart can produce subtly different results.

In this second edition of Ash Glazes, Phil Rogers covers the history of ash glazes and proceeds to discuss the practicalities of collecting and testing wood ashes and transforming them into glazes. In the final portion of the book, he looks at the work of some leading international potters whose work is typified by the array of finishes that they achieve through their use of wood ash glazes. Images of their work offer an impressive display of the colors and techniques possible through this glazing technique.

Ash Glazes has been designed as an introduction and practical handbook to the subject. It will provide inspiration for working potters and delight for all those interested in contemporary ceramics.

Book Description

To many potters glaze recipes are like manna from heaven, appearing from nowhere, or holy writ, once committed to paper never to be changed or questioned. Potters use recipes that are passed from one to another and do not understand why the same recipes do not work for everyone. In this book the mystery and involved chemistry are replaced with a practical, straightforward approach to glazes and their application. Chemical formulae are avoided as far as possible. There are many books which cover the chemistry of glazes in depth, with information on oxides and other materials, and do it well. This book is about a personal journey developing and discovering glazes. Author Daly shows how simple it can be to develop a glaze and a color. You need no previous experience - only a passion for exploration and discovery. If you are looking for glaze recipes you can turn to Chapter 6. It will be like viewing a friends travel video - seeing but not experiencing. If you are looking for a better understanding of glazes, color development and surface finishes, begin at Chapter 1. A glaze recipe from a book is only part of what creates the finished surface. You may now be searching for what you believe is an elusive recipe, but you already have the recipe; what you are really seeking is how to control the other factors that determine the final result - clay bodies, kilns, temperatures, kiln atmospheres and the way you apply your glaze material. This book is about a journey of discovery and understanding; so that the development of color and surface finishes becomes not mysterious at all. This book provides approaches and observation skills which will give an overall view of what happens to materials in glazes, how oxides give different colors with varying base glazes and how application methods can alter everything. The development of glazes and color should be fun.

This book is NOT for the beginner in ceramics/glaze formulation. "A Potter's Pallette" is better for beginners with glaze. After studying glazes and their make-up, this is a logical continuation with ample photos of results with differing chemistry. It allows someone with some experience and a working knowledge of clays and glazes to move forward into dissecting exactly what causes what. A good basis for one starting to mix their own glazes
