Is Pluto a Planet?: A Historical Journey through the Solar System
ASIN: 0521800196 |
Book Description
Exactly what is beyond Pluto? Why, in the last ten years, has the Solar System more than doubled in size? For the first time, in almost two centuries, an entirely new population of planetary objects has been found that may well explain these two questions. This newly discovered realm of minor planets, now known as the "Kuiper Belt," has reconceptualized our understanding of how the Solar System was formed and has finally given ontological explanations for the enigmatic outer planet Pluto. Beyond Pluto is the fascinating story of how a group of theoretical physicists decided that there must be a population of unknown bodies beyond Pluto and how a small band of astronomers set out to find them. Acclaimed scientist John K. Davies recounts how they predicted the existence of these planetary bodies, how they were eventually discovered, and how Pluto was named. In addition, Davies provides biographies of the astronomers who discovered these new worlds and information on the telescopes they used. John K. Davies is a support scientist for the UK Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) atop the dormant volcano Mauna Kea in Hawaii. He holds PhDs in chemistry and astronomy, discovered six comets while teaching at Leicester University in the UK, and was a member of the ISO-CAM team at the Royal Observatory in Edinburgh, Scotland. He has contributed to magazines such as Astronomy, New Scientist, Sky & Telescope, and Space. In 2000, a small main asteroid belt was named Johndavies in recognition of his numerous contributions to astronomy.
Download Description
In the last ten years, the solar system has more than doubled in size. For the first time in almost two centuries an entirely new population of planetary objects has been found. This 'Kuiper Belt' of minor planets beyond Neptune has revolutionised our understanding of how the solar system was formed and has finally explained the origin of the enigmatic outer planet Pluto. This is the fascinating story of how theoretical physicists decided that there must be a population of unknown bodies beyond Neptune and how a small band of astronomers set out to find them. What they discovered was a family of ancient planetesimals whose orbits and physical properties were far more complicated than anyone expected. We follow the story of this discovery, and see how astronomers, theoretical physicists and one incredibly dedicated amateur observer have come together to explore the frozen boundary of the solar system.

Great Stories of the discoveries of Kuiper Belt Objects.......2006-10-19
How is the edge of the solar system look like? Before 1992, most people are not quite sure even the theoretical Kuiper Belt have been proposed, but it's still lack of observational evidence. This book is believed to be the only popular science book that is dedicated on the subject of the edge of solar system. However, reading this book would be a bit difficult for the people without solid astronomical background.
This book address the story of the search of Kuiper Belt Objects(KBOs). Published in 2001, the content is not up to date, as the discovery is everchanging, including the finding of 2003UB313, Eris, that led to the great planetary debate. However, this book put detail discussion on the steps and searches of early attempts and discoveries. Since 1992, the first KBO is discovered, but the story of KBO is seldom appeared on books, thus this is a very important book on the subject.
From Centaurs, work of astronomers, how astronomers search, analysis and follow-up, all these are outlined in the book. The orbital resonance with Neptune, color distribution of KBOs etc. are also included.
This is a great valued book for those who want to know more about the life of a small group of astronomers.
This is what astronomers actually do.......2004-06-25
Television documentaries about astronomers tend to romanticize their work, making it look like a parade of exciting discoveries. This book, about the search for objects beyond the traditional nine planets, gives the reader a much more realistic picture. Davies describes how individual astronomers and small groups work through the laborious processes of searching, analyzing results, and testing theories. There are many obstacles, including scientific rivalries and limited access to observatories. Yet patient work has gradually revealed an enormous, previously undetected realm of icy planetoids, some of which are perturbed into the inner solar system to become comets.
Davies' writing is clear and straightforward, avoiding mathematics and explaining technical terms where necessary. Readers with a serious interest in astronomy will find this book fascinating. Readers whose interest is only marginal may find it too detailed and slow-moving. Though the black and white illustrations are useful, it would have helped to have diagrams showing the scale of this vast realm all the way out to the hypothetical Oort Cloud. Good examples can be found in the June 2004 issue of Sky and Telescope.
This book should really be called "Beyond Neptune".......2002-05-20
I bought this book to get information on the trans-Plutonian objects recently discovered. While there is some material on this (apparently little is actually known), most of the book is about the scientists who discovered these objects and how they did it. If you're looking for a book on how scientists work, this is quite good, but if like me you're looking for a book on the results of that work, you may be disappointed. I feel the title is a misnomer (though probably attention getting), because Pluto and its moon are among the objects discussed! Also, most of the objects orbit between Neptune and Pluto (at least when Pluto is at its average distance), so are really better described as trans-Neptunian than trans-Plutonian. I don't mean to be so negative about the book; it wasn't what I expected, based on the title, but it could be just what you're looking for.
Clear and concise.......2001-11-22
This book is a summary of the (few) things we (think we) know about the objects that orbit beyond Neptune. The author gradually guides the reader through the science of these small icy objects, which existence was suspected almost 50 years before their actual discovery.
Introductory historical and theoretical chapters, covering the period from the discovery of Pluto and the next decades, are followed by more and more discoveries and scientific results, most of them not older than 10 years. From the first Centaurs to the extrasolar dust disks observations, every aspect is clearly explained, and ultimately provides a complete picture of this region of the solar system.
Throughout this chronology, the author explains the science as well as the way this science is actually done, up in the observatories in Hawaii, or in an university office, in front of a computer screen. It is a very honest tribute to the people (the author being one of them) that spend most of their time trying to set-up complex experiments, understand the cryptic data sent back by their high-tech instruments, and then write articles about things they are usually the first to analyze.
This book is short because not much is known yet. But it is fascinating because almost everything we know has been discovered in the last 10 years, and you can expect more in the very near future. In order to get the most of what we be published, this book is the place to start.
And for those, like me, who are interested in the far regions of the solar system, I would recommend this other book about the "King of the Kuiper Belt", Pluto, written by another specialist (Alan Stern): "Pluto and Charon". It's a good complement to this one.
Summary the Latest Findings of the Kuiper Belt Objects.......2001-10-20
In school most of us were taught that the last planet in the solar system is Pluto and there is nothing beyond but the vast emptiness of space. That is, at least until we reach the next star system. However, as the author points out in his book, the latest astronomical findings of the past ten years clearly show that there are many small objects (minor planets) that orbit beyond Pluto, which are also part of our solar system.
The book opens with a chapter devoted to the initial theoretical studies, which attempted to prove the existence of these distant objects years before they could be observed. The next two chapters examine two edge-of-the-solar-system objects, the short-period comets and the Centaurs (small bodies which orbit near Uranus and Neptune). The book then moves on to the long years spend by many astronomers trying to observe one of these objects and then characterize its orbit. Of course, once one was found many others where then discovered. After these sections, the book covers the effort to characterize the physical parameters, such as diameter, albedo, chemical composition, etc., of these objects and how they are formed and reformed (due to collisions with neighboring bodies). The book concludes which a section on future exploration of these objects and a subtle plea from the author to rename the Kuiper Belt after the man who first postulated its existence.
In general, I found this book to be quite interesting, especially the sections on the astronomers who devoted years of their life trying to find these objects. I do feel that some non-technical people may find this book a little overwhelming due to several graphs and the use many technical terms.

Great for those interested in astronomy.......2007-08-23
Plato, the brilliant Greek philosopher, rightly concluded, "Astronomy compels the soul to look upwards and leads us from this world to another." Perhaps it is this desire of escape that has inspired stargazers down through the ages to stare into the dark nighttime sky. Whether looking for extraterrestrials or simply a shooting star--many seek escape only provided in the nighttime horizon.
In her book, Pluto and Beyond, Anne Minard traces the history of the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. The accomplishments astronomers have had at this observatory are impressive indeed: discovering Pluto in 1930; co-discovering rings around Uranus in 1977; and observations that ultimately led to the discovery that our universe is expanding.
This work mentions Pluto, even lamenting its recent demotion to a dwarf planet, but is not purely about astronomy, however. The casual reader who might be seeking the escape promised by astronomy will find themselves entangled in a veritable "Who's who" of former Lowell astronomers. Minard's precise review of the evolution of star mapping or the overly detailed descriptions of correspondence between the observatory's founder, Percival Lowell, and his underlings will only arrest the deeply committed.
Pluto and Beyond adequately presents the Discovery Channel Telescope, a joint venture between Lowell Observatory and the Discovery Channel. This state of the art telescope is expected to be completed in 2010 and will allow astronomers to peer into the sky above Flagstaff from an elevation of 7800 feet. Scientific discovery will be propelled to new levels as this technology will allow expert examination of Near Earth Objects (NEO's) and extrasolar planets. Perhaps astronomers will discover something is too near Earth--and maybe suitable intervention will be employed.
If your particular interest in astronomy is the Lowell Observatory, you will enjoy the minutiae presented in this work. If you are looking for a book that details what draws most to Astronomy, or the implications of the scientific inquiry regarding it, you might find your escape elsewhere.
Armchair Interviews says: Heed the reviewer's qualifying remarks.
Review published in The New Mexican magazine 7/15/07.......2007-07-23
"Anne Minard doesn't hold much back. Jealousy, back-stabbing, ineptitude and bureaucratic snarls are bared. The good stuff is here, too: The discoveries, the brilliant thinking, the dedication, the cool technologies... Minard does discuss the controversy surrounding Pluto's downgrading, but she also points to an optimistic future for the observatory built on the obsession of one man, an obsession that left a great legacy for astronomy."
From the History to the Future of Astronomy.......2007-07-07
You gotta feel sorry for poor Pluto. If, of course, you thought that a frozen planet so far away from things could have any feelings.
On the other hand, as the book says, the continuing change that is the hallmark of science is good. As we progress, as we learn more, we change the basic definitions. And as we learn more about the objects in the Kuiper Belt we found bigger objects that couldn't really be called planets. So poor Pluto.
This book is basically a history of Lowell observatory in (well 12 miles outside of) Flagstaff, Arizona. The title is suitable for a book on Lowell, because it was at Lowell that Pluto was discovered in 1930. It was also at Lowell that the second and third moons of Pluto (Nix and Hydra) were discovered in 2005. Also 2005 saw the groundbreaking for the new Discovery Channel Telescope, the fifth largest telescope in the United States.
By no means a technical book, this is a good general description of the work being done in astronomy today.
A recommended pick for any library strong in modern astronomy........2007-06-10
PLUTO AND BEYOND: A STORY OF DISCOVERY, ADVERSITY, AND ONGOING EXPLORATION tells not only of Pluto but of the Lowell Observatory, one of the few remaining privately-owned observatories and home to the discoverer of Pluto over seventy years ago. In pairing the story of the discovery of Pluto with the evolution of Lowell, PLUTO AND BEYOND examines both history and key, evolving astronomical ideas in a survey exploring the cutting edge of space research. A recommended pick for any library strong in modern astronomy.
Amazing Science and Writing!.......2007-04-22
This book is interesting and accessible. Brings Lowell Observatory to Life! Great Read!
Book Description
Kaboom! About 4.6 billion years ago, a swirling gas cloud comprised of carbon dust, hydrogen, helium, water and ice collapsed under its own gravity, creating an enormous explosion the — a big bang, so to speak. As it contracted, the solar system we know today began to take shape. In The Solar System, readers journey back billions of years, to witness the birth of the planets, stars, and more. This insightful book features the following.
• The celestial bodies that make up our fascinating solar system are explored with a team of scientists and experts .
• This book offers provocative research of the nine major planets, their largest moons, famous comets and asteroids, and illuminates the amazing details of their creation, development and discovery.
• Unique spreads contain detailed descriptions, important data tables, intriguing graphics and lavish artworks of the planets, moons and other key celestial bodies.
• Interesting speculation is discussed about the possibility one day — perhaps in the year 2515 — of people inhabiting the moon.
• Fascinating information and more than 500 spectacular color illustrations and photographs add to this insightful book.

A very nice book on the outer solar system........2006-02-28
This is a really nice, and cheap, history of the outer solar system. Until recently Saturn was the last known planet. This all changed with the discovery of Uranus by William Herschel in 1781. Since then we have struggled to reveal information about the outer planets. The book covers both the personal lives of the main characters involved in the discoveries as well as the science involved without going into too much technical detail. At the same time it does not tend to oversimplify the significance of the science by using flowery language.
As it was written around 1990 the book is slightly out of date, missing some of the latest discoveries. However, this is forgivable given the books price. I give the book 4 stars because it is not outstanding. It is however very readable and interesting. It would be worth reading for anyone who has a general interest astronomy/space etc.
An excellent, narrowed focus which probes the outer solar system alone.......2005-09-04
Mark Littmann's Planets Beyond republishes the updated, revised 1990 edition to survey the outer planets; from the history of their discovery to modern scientific findings about the planets including Voyageur results. An excellent, narrowed focus which probes the outer solar system alone.

Mark Littmann's Planets Beyond republishes the updated, revised 1990 edition to survey the outer planets; from the history of their discovery to modern scientific findings about the planets including Voyageur results. An excellent, narrowed focus which probes the outer solar system alone.
Pleasantly informal and substantial.......2000-07-02
This excellent book on the outer solar system is written for laypeople who want more than a short introduction to the subject. The writing style is informal but very informative.
The book was published in 1988, as Voyager 2 neared Neptune. A 1990 paperback edition describes the actual flyby.
There are chapters on Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, their discoveries, the related discovery of the first asteroids, the Voyagers' Grand Tour, the search for a tenth planet, and more.
The author also remembers the human touch. There is ample discussion of planet discoverers William Herschel, John Adams, Urban Le Verrier, and Clyde Tombaugh. We also learn about the memorable people they worked with, and sometimes against (!)
The author likes sidebars, which are quite interesting and keep the main text from bogging down. There you will find:
* A short biography of Caroline Herschel (William's sister), the first woman professional astronomer;
* Clyde Tombaugh on some of his experiences;
* Gary Flando on his discovery of the Grand Tour;
* James Christy on his discovery of Pluto's moon Charon;
* Galileo's unsuspecting observation of Neptune in 1613;
* The planned Galileo and Cassini missions;
* Much more.
One sidebar strongly supports Pluto's planetary status, but it concedes that if Pluto turns out to be a typical member of a hypothetical asteroid belt beyond Neptune, it might make sense to redesignate Pluto. Four years later, the Kuiper Belt was discovered...
Hopefully Littmann will revise the book again to include the Kuiper Belt, the Hubble Telescope, the latest speculation on Planet X, and more.
Highly recommended.
*****
January 28, 2006: I have just acquired the 1990 paperback edition.
A new 30-page chapter thoroughly covers Voyager 2's 1989 Neptune flyby. The rest of the book is almost unchanged, so the reader can compare speculation and reality.
The book suggests that a proposed 2000-2014 Pluto mission be named Tombaugh. New Horizons is now on the way to a 2015 flyby. It doesn't carry Clyde Tombaugh's name, but it does carry some of his ashes.
Much has happened since Littman's 1990 revision, and indeed since my initial 2000 review. Galileo was crashed into Jupiter after completing its mission. Cassini is at Saturn. Two new moons of Pluto were discovered. Pluto is no longer the largest known object beyond Neptune. There is no consensus whether eight, nine, or ten objects deserve the term planet. If Littman revises the book again, he has a lot of new material to discuss.
Still highly recommended.
