Book Description
The European Court of Justice has profoundly influenced the development of the legal order of the European Community through the elaboration of unwritten general principles of law. The general principles derive from the fundamental values underlying the national legal systems. This fully revised and updated Second Edition of The General Principles of EC Law provides a detailed and systematic analysis of the general principles as applied by the European Court of Justice and the Court of First Instance, and as they are influenced by political and legislative developments. It assesses the impact of the EU Constitution on the European polity and the protection of Community rights in national courts. Tridimas highlights the various functions of the general principles, the diverse contexts in which they are employed, and the varying degrees of judicial scrutiny that they entail, focussing on principles including subsidiarity, equality, proportionality, fundamental rights, and the right to a hearing.

Book Description
The intertwinement of EC law and national law may create unforeseeability in situations where EC law invades the national cases, which gives rise to the very question of legal certainty in EC law. This study contributes to the contemporary discussion, which wrestles with the following questions in particular:
- What have been the visions and objectives for European integration in the last decades?
- How to describe European Union as a political entity and a legal system?
- What is the relationship between legal certainty, rule of law, various general principles and human rights?
- What is the core of legal certainty on the basis of the case study?
- What kind of legal arguments and patterns of justification are there from a comparative perspective?
- How has the term 'legal certainty' been defined in the Nordic legal theory?
- How predictable and acceptable are the interpretations of the European Court of Justice - is it "running wild"?
Legal certainty relates to the principle of non-retroactivity and the protection of legitimate expectations in particular, but more profoundly it can be related to the conceptual scale for weighing up and balancing between formal justice and material fairness in legal decision-making. This scale is illustrated by presenting the terms 'formal', 'factual' and 'substantive' legal certainty.

Book Description
This book is based on a selection of papers presented at the Conference in Malmo, Sweden, which was organized by the Swedish Network for European Legal Studies in cooperation with the Faculty of Law of the University of Lund. The purpose of the conference was to analyze general principles and their scope in the EU legal order with special emphasis on their role in the creation of a jus commune europaeum. The impact of the general principles of Community Law at the national level was analyzed and also how these principles have been transformed into the national legal systems. Also discussed was the creative process behind the shaping and further development of the general principles and their application. Due to their complex nature, the general principles offer a more or less unlimited field for theoretical legal studies. At the same time, the general principles play a very important role in legal practice, not least when used as instruments for the protection of individuals and firms against too far-reaching measures taken by the European institutions or Member States.

Three scoops, please: a travel book, a cookbook and a pop culture history all in one, Everybody Loves Ice Cream is the most complete treatment of the subject a reader can find anywhere. Whether you're looking for a great ice cream stand nearby, a recipe for rocky road, or an explanation for what makes an ice cream "super-premium," you'll find it here. It's true that everybody loves ice cream, and this book tells you why.
Customer Reviews:
A real treat of a book!.......2005-10-12
So far, this book has garnered only five-star reviews, and I absolutely agree with all the raves the other reviewers have given this book. I bought it for a research project along with quite a number of other food history books, and this is probably the best of the lot. It's more than history and facts - yes, it teaches you more than you ever wanted to know about ice cream, but it's fun and entertaining at the same time. The pictures and graphics are fantastic, and make the whole reading experience extremely enjoyable. The book is crammed full of the most interesting facts from what must be hundreds of different sources (for example: Did you know that your favorite flavor may indicate what your personality is like? Or did you know that there is a portable non-electric ice cream maker that makes ice cream after being attached to any moving object or person for forty minutes?)There is also a complete history of ice cream, ice cream recipes, reviews of top ice cream shops, and much, much more. Plus, if you haven't had enough at that point, there's even a bibliography in the back for you to find even more information about ice cream.
My only complaint about this book is that it gave me VERY intense cravings for ice cream - not good for my diet!!!
Everything you've always wanted to know about Ice Cream.......2004-09-14
This is by far the most complete book about ice cream I've ever seen. It's ideal for both adults and kids with fun facts. For example, here's one of the entertaining Did You Know? entries: "In Newark, New Jersey, it is illegal to eat ice cream after 6 P.M. without a doctor's note." The ice cream making tips and recipes make it a wonderful resource for an activity the whole family can enjoy at home or you can visit top ice cream parlors in the U.S. Check out the state-by-state listings included in "Everyone Loves Ice Cream." You'll happily refer to it again and again.
You just can't put it down........2004-07-23
I opened this book with a few free minutes while sitting on my front porch and was still looking at it long after my family was asleep. It's good clean fun. It's so much more than a tribute to ice cream, I swear I couldn't stand it any more and tip-toed downstairs to see if I had peanuts to make a "tin roof" before picking it back up again. The first thing I'm going to do is have great family fun by letting my kids make "Coffee Can Ice Cream". This book brought back such great childhood memories of cranking the old rock salt & ice machine we had all those years ago. In addition to the great text in the book, the graphics and photos put you back in another place and time. I almost feel like taking that trip down old Route 66 after looking at it.
This book will not get stuffed into my crowded bookshelf - it's going to be a great, often-reached-for, home decoration for my kitchen island from this summer forward!
A tasty treat for the ice cream lover in you.......2004-07-20
This book is the most comprehensive guide to ice cream. It's a history lesson, travel guide and recipe book all scooped together deliciously! I found the writing fun and engaging. Arnold brings ice cream to life in a way that had me wanting to chant "Ice cream! Ice cream! We all scream for ice cream!" Makes a great gift along with a pint of a favorite flavor. Highly recommended.
Ice Cream Lovers Look No Further!.......2004-07-20
This book has it all! It's a recipe book, a travel guide, a history manual, and a fun filled fact finder for every ice cream. Easy to read and fun to flip through. Don't miss "Flavors Worth Finding," "Get Sauced," and "Phosphates Preserved: Great Ice Cream and Soda Fountain Museums." I don't know how I survived so long without this guide to my favorite food! Note to My Relatives: Expect to receive this book for all holidays in the upcoming year!
Customer Reviews:
Another fine work by Mr. Butko.......2001-10-12
A must read for anyone who grew up in Western Pennsylvania or Eastern Ohio who remembers Isaly's Dairy Stores. While not from that region, I have eaten a few Klondike Bars in my time and enjoy Mr. Butko's work on the Lincoln Highway and Diners. This is well researched looking at company records and interviews with Isaly family and coworkers. The book is filled with excellent photographs from the start of Isaly Dairy's to today. Great gift idea for family or friends who enjoyed a Skyscraper Cone, Chipped Ham, or a Klondike.
A must read!.......2001-06-21
Brian Butko is a brilliant writer whose love of a subject comes alive in his books. I have never read a book that more comprehensively and eloquently relates the ethos of a region and its people. This book is a great read for anyone who is interested in the history and culture of these wonderful eateries. It also provides an incredibly insightful glimpse into the world of small business management. I grew up on Isaly's products, and this fascinating book takes me back to my youth.
Book Description
The work of Douglas Harper has for two decades documented worlds in eclipse. A glimpse into the life of dairy farmers in upstate New York on the cusp of technological change, Changing Works is no exception. With photographs and interviews with farmers, Harper brings into view a social world altered by machines and stuns us with gorgeous visions of rural times past. As a member of this community, Harper relates compelling stories about families and their dairies that reveal how the advent of industrialized labor changed the way farmers structure their work and organize their lives. His new book charts the transformation of American farming from small dairies based on animal power and cooperative work to industrialized agriculture.
Changing Works combines Harper's pictures with classic images by photographers such as Gordon Parks, Sol Libsohn, and Charlotte Brooks-men and women whose work during the 1940s documented the mechanization and automation of agricultural practices. Part social history and part analysis of the drive to mass production, Changing Works examines how we farmed a half century ago versus how we do today through pictures new and old and through discussions with elderly farmers who witnessed the makeover. Ultimately, Harper challenges timely ecological and social questions about contemporary agriculture. He shows us how the dissolution of cooperative dairy farming has diminished the safety of the practice, degraded the way we relate to our natural environment, and splintered the once tight-knit communities of rural farmers. Mindful, then, of the advantages of preindustrial agriculture, and heeding the alarming spread of mad cow and foot-and-mouth disease, Changing Works harks back to the benefits of an older system.
Customer Reviews:
Review of Changing Works .......2005-11-05
I found "Changing Works" to be a very informative text in the area of technological advances in the dairy industry. Harper uses SONJ pictures to highlight wonderful interviews with various dairy farmers that farmed in the generations before World War II. These interviews bring the past back to life as the reader goes through the mechanization introductions such as replacement of horses and the reconstruction of the milking process. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about the dairy industry and to future dairymen. As an agricultural student, I was enthralled throughout the entire book. Harper tends to be less descriptive when it comes to the actual workings of the machinery, but it does not take much away from the rich narrative he weaves with the farmers' interviews. The reader gets a feeling of loss for the traditional ways that Harper projects throughout the book and it only enhances the content.
Book Description
For over a century, America's nutrition authorities have heralded milk as "nature's perfect food," as "indispensable" and "the most complete food." These milk "boosters" have ranged from consumer activists, to government nutritionists, to the American Dairy Council and its ubiquitous milk moustache ads. The image of milk as wholesome and body-building has a long history, but is it accurate?
Recently, within the newest social movements around food, milk has lost favor. Vegan anti-milk rhetoric portrays the dairy industry as cruel to animals and milk as bad for humans. Recently, books with titles like, "Milk: The Deadly Poison," and "Don't Drink Your Milk" have portrayed milk as toxic and unhealthy. Controversies over genetically-engineered cows and questions about antibiotic residue have also prompted consumers to question whether the milk they drink each day is truly good for them.
In Nature's Perfect Food Melanie Dupuis illuminates these questions by telling the story of how Americans came to drink milk. We learn how cow's milk, which was associated with bacteria and disease became a staple of the American diet. Along the way we encounter 19th century evangelists who were convinced that cow's milk was the perfect food with divine properties, brewers whose tainted cow feed poisoned the milk supply, and informal wetnursing networks that were destroyed with the onset of urbanization and industrialization. Informative and entertaining, Nature's Perfect Food will be the standard work on the history of milk.
Customer Reviews:
Why are Americans the number one consumers of milk?.......2002-08-21
I purchased this book while doing a research project on the consumption of milk in American culture. This book does not intend to answer the highly debatable question of whether or not milk is good or bad for you, but rather does a great job of focusing on why we drink so much milk in the first place. If you are a milk lover or milk hater, have an interest in food and society, or are just curious to learn more about milk, I recommend this book.
Book Description
Camembert--delectably fragrant, creamy-centered, neatly boxed--is the most popular and most famous French cheese. Originally made by hand in the Norman countryside, it is now mass-produced internationally, yet Camembert remains a national symbol for France, emblematic of its cultural identity. In this witty and entertaining book, Pierre Boisard investigates the history of Camembert and its legend. He considers the transformation of France's cheese-making industry and along the way gives a highly selective, yet richly detailed history of France--from the Revolution to the European Union. Camembert: A National Myth weaves together culinary and social history in a fascinating tale about the changing nature of food with implications for every modern consumer.
As the legend goes, by coincidence, grand design, or clever marketing, the birth of Camembert corresponds almost exactly in time with the birth of the French republic. In this book, republicans and Bonapartists, revolutionaries and priests are reconciled over the contents of a little round box, originating a great myth and a great nation. The story of the cheese's growing fame features Napoleon, Louis Pasteur, the soldiers of the First World War, and many others.
Beneath this intriguing story, however, runs a grittier tale about the history of food production. We learn, for example, how Camembert became white--a topic that becomes a metaphor for the sanitation of the countryside--and how Americans discovered the secrets of its production. As he describes the transformation of the Camembert industry and the changing quality of the cheese itself, Boisard reveals what we stand to lose from industrialization, the hallmark of the past century.
Today, small producers of raw-milk, ladle-molded Camembert are fighting to keep their tradition alive. Boisard brings us to a new appreciation of the sensual appeal of a lovely cheese and whets the appetite for a taste of the authentic product.

Book Description
Robert C. Bjorklund's profiles of dairy farm families and agricultural leaders of southern Wisconsin record a part of regional history that has been changing dramatically in recent years. Just as tractors replaced horses a few decades ago, new technologies are taking over many of the chores once done by farm families. While many of Bob's stories tell of milk producers on the farm, others profile co-op members, cheesemakers and farm business leaders as well as university professors, researchers and Extension workers. Bob based these columns on a lifetime of covering the farmers and agricultural developments of southern Wisconsin. The clear language of these stories will appeal to both farmers and non-farmers.
