    Book Description

"Just 'cause I didn't follow the rules doesn't make it my fault that the Space Shuttle almost crashed. Well, okay, maybe it was sort of my fault. But not the part when Pilot O'Brien was spacewalking and I accidentally knocked him halfway to Jupiter, or when I wound up in a space suit and nearly became the first human satellite to orbit the Earth; you can't blame that on me.

"Well, okay, maybe that was sort of my fault, too."

So begins another hilarious Wally McDoogle MISadventure as our boy blunder stows aboard the Space Shuttle and learns the importance of: OBEYING THE RULES!

5 out of 5 stars My Life As An Afterthought Astronaut.......2003-11-12

This book is hilarious! Bill Meyers writes alot of these My Life As books . I am 10 years old and I love his books. One day Wally Mcdoogle is at a rocket site in Florida. The tour guide is leaving and Wally drops his glasses in a space shuttle and goes to get them. While on board,he goes to the lower deck and dozes off. When he wakes up,the shuttle has taken off so he starts to float around and hit the walls. The space crew is on a mission to deliver a piece to the space station. When the crew finds out that they have an extra passenger, they radio ground control and Wally's dad asks Wally if he wants to stay up there so the pilots can finish their job. Wally replies yes because he likes it out there. I like this book because the situations Wally finds himself in are really funny.

    5 out of 5 stars great.......2003-10-17

this book was great I just finished reading it to my 8yr old son and we laughed all the way through it. now he is ready to read it by himself. It really got through to him on following the rules and what can happen when you don't.

    5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!.......1999-09-13

Wally sneaks aboard the space shuttle and learns the hard way why he should follow the rules. Very funny, and educational!

5 out of 5 stars This book will capture you-- I couldn't put it down!.......1999-04-12

This book has it all-- humor- fun- a great plotline- and a very good lesson to be learned

5 out of 5 stars Wally accidently gets to go to space in a space shuttle.......1998-10-06

I think this book is very cool. This is my favorite "My LIfe" book from the whole series. I think it is funny when Wally's glasses fall inside the space shuttle. He goes into the space shuttle in tries to find his glasses. He can't find it that easily so he goes into space and he doesn't even know it until later!

    Book Description

In spite of the Challenger and Columbia disasters, the US Space Shuttle, which entered service in 1981, remains the most successful spacecraft ever developed. Conceived and designed as a reusable spacecraft to provide cheap access to low Earth orbit, and to supersede expendable launch vehicles, serving as the National Space Transportation System, it now coexists with a new range of commercial rockets. David Harland’s definitive work on the Space Shuttle explains the scientific contribution the Space Shuttle has made to the international space programme, detailing missions to Mir, Hubble and more recently its role in the assembly of the International Space Station. This substantial revision to existing chapters and extension of ‘The Space Shuttle’, following the loss of Columbia, will include a comprehensive account of the run-up to resumption of operations and conclude with a chapter beyond the Shuttle, looking at possible future concepts for a partly or totally reusable space vehicle which are being considered to replace the Shuttle.

5 out of 5 stars Readable details about today's space program.......2005-01-17

Pick up any of the Praxis-Springer books and you'll think it's a textbook. And that is partly a correct assumption. This book is different in its narrative, however. It's not just dry facts, but an interesting collection of accomplishments.
David M. Harland's Story of the Space Shuttle is very well written and anybody who has the slightest passing interest in America's space program will enjoy it.
It's really broken down into three or four sections. The first 200 pages or so deals with a chronological highlight of every shuttle mission. You could stop reading there and have enjoyed a book on the shuttle program and learned quite a bit about what the shuttle's science and engineering accomplishments were (which are myriad and too many to list even though many people would have you believe the shuttle never did much of anything).
The next 200 pages deals with detailed discussions about spacewalks, science performed on the shuttle and its contributions to the Russian Mir Space Station and the International Space Station.
At the end, there is list of every shuttle flight that includes: orbiter information, cargo manifest, crew list, launch dates and major achievements for each flight.
This is a great, interesting work that I would advise anybody over the age of 10 to read.

5 out of 5 stars The story has a modern theme, but the same excitement as the original series.......2006-06-03

I grew up an avid reader of the original series of the Hardy Boys and I currently own a couple of the books published before World War II. This is the first book in one of the later series that I have read and while there are many obvious differences, the general level of interest and excitement is still there.
Frank, Joe and Chet Morton are aiding Fenton Hardy in one of his cases. All three of the boys are technologically literate, using modern electronic gear to perform their detective work. The primary case is a series of sabotage events at the space center, where a new satellite is about to be launched. Since those previously scheduled to be civilian members of a space shuttle crew must decline, Frank, Joe and Chet undergo astronaut training and Frank and Joe are members of the space shuttle crew. While in space, they unmask the members of the sabotage ring and solve all of the mysteries.
I enjoyed the story, having the boys so technically knowledgeable really advances the tale and makes it interesting. The author(s) also expend the ink needed to explain the physics behind life in space and what an astronaut needs to do to live and work in space. Having an opportunity to go up into space is the dream of almost every child interested in science, and this story is a tantalizing clue as to what it would be like.

        Product Description

Here, in over three and a half gigabytes of material on DVD-ROM, is the complete story of the historic Shuttle return-to-flight mission of STS-114 by Discovery and her crew in July-August 2005. Coverage includes: * Over 500 digital images of preflight activities, crew training, and in-flight electronic still camera views of mission events. These images are available as high-resolution image files, and also are presented in our exclusive Image Gallery in PDF format. This gallery reproduces the photos in a computerized "photo album" suitable for quick full-screen browsing! This format was designed to mimic the look and "feel" of a real book; there is no need to laboriously import specific images into a slow-loading program for viewing and printing. As you flip through the images in the Gallery, you can magnify photographs for better viewing. * Return-to-flight and mission-specific technical documentation, including full reproductions of the presentation charts at the Flight Readiness Review (FRR), ET foam loss and tile gap filler problem charts and presentations, press kit, Mission Control status reports, and in-flight messages to the crew, including “execute packages” and technical updates. There are several hundred documents presented in PDF format. * Over 250 mission-related video clips and 30 audio clips. NASA reports: During this test mission, NASA accomplished a variety of goals while also learning important lessons. At liftoff on July 26, 2005, a large piece of foam broke off the External Tank. NASA engineers are working to determine the cause and design changes to prevent it. Using the Orbiter Boom Sensor System, Discovery crewmembers took an up-close look at the orbiter's thermal protection system. Commander Collins guided Discovery through the first-ever "rendezvous pitch maneuver" as the orbiter approached the International Space Station for docking. The back flip allowed Station crewmembers Phillips and Krikalev to snap high-resolution photos. During the first spacewalk, Robinson and Noguchi tested new TPS repair techniques. Two days later, Robinson and Noguchi again ventured out to replace a failed Control Moment Gyro. The RPM photos revealed two tile gap-fillers protruding from the underside, so Robinson extracted them during the third EVA. This incredible DVD-ROM is packed with over 12,000 pages reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software - allowing direct viewing on Windows and Macintosh systems. Our news and educational CD-ROM and DVD-ROM discs are privately compiled collections of official public domain U.S. government files and documents - they are not produced by the federal government. They are designed to provide a convenient user-friendly reference work, utilizing the benefits of the Adobe Acrobat format to uniformly present thousands of pages that can be rapidly reviewed, searched by finding specific words, or printed without untold hours of tedious research and downloading. Vast archives of important public domain government information that might otherwise remain inaccessible are available for instant review no matter where you are. This book-on-a-disc format makes a great reference work and educational tool. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, comprehensive, thoroughly researched, and portable - everything you need to know, from the federal sources you trust. This DVD-ROM disc is for use in a computer DVD drive. The files can be accessed from the File Explorer in the same way that you open files from a CD-ROM disc; the CD-ROM and DVD-ROM formats are functionally the same, but the DVD has more than six times greater storage capacity. Of course, this disc cannot be "played" in a DVD player connected to a television set. It contains computer-formatted data, not video.

3 out of 5 stars A Journalistic Account of the Challenger Accident.......2004-01-20

Published in 1987 just a year after the "Challenger" accident, this book by journalist Malcolm McConnell explores what was then known about the events leading up to the decision to launch the shuttle on January 28, 1986. Stressing the immediate causes of the accident, McConnell highlighted the pressures to launch, the objections of engineers, and the internal debates on the subject. He argued that NASA leaders caused the disaster by pressing operations officials to launch when they did so that President Ronald Reagan could mention it in that evening's scheduled State of the Union Address. Of course, this was the mission that would have as a crewmember Christa McAullife, the teach in space who had a special lesson from orbit planned for millions of school children.

McConnell's accusations made in "A Majot Malfunction" have been condemned by proponents of the Space Shuttle, especially by NASA personnel, but those complaints require more dispassionate, critical, and technically and programmatically informed analysis than has been offered. This book is certainly not the penultimate word on the subject, but it is an important statement of public understanding of the subject not long after the time of the accident.

For an analytical, and exceptionally compelling, analysis of the "Challenger" accident readers should review Diane Vaughan, "The Challenger Launch Decision" (University of Chicago Press, 1996). Malcolm McConnell's book is mostly useful as a journalistic account that offers an overview of the accident and the reasons behind it.

5 out of 5 stars Choosing "romantic myth over a practical space policy.".......2003-12-20

Malcolm McConnell, a renown author and reporter at Cape Canaveral to cover the Teacher-in-Space launch, writes a revealing account of the events that led to the Challenger tragedy as well as the launch itself. Here are some of the things covered in this book:
--The controversy over the issuing of contracts to Rockwell and Thiokol in the 1970s.
--How the campaigns of Nixon and Reagan influenced events that led to the tragedy, in the latter case, why the "Teacher-in-Space" program was so important for political image.
--How employees, especially at the Marshall Space Center, were treated.
--Concerns of pilot Mike Smith days before his final flight.
--Ways in which Reagan's Sate of the Union address, the Soviet's plan to examine Halley's Comet, and Congressman Bill Nelson's insistence on being on Columbia for the 61-C mission may have contributed to the event.
--Step-by-step details on the procedures and concerns leading to the ill-fated launch. It also covers the daily life of the crew from their big press conference to the end.

Published in 1988, the book does not go too much into the aftermath of the tragedy, although it does include an epilogue that tells the fate of some of the execs connected to the launch. There are sporadic references to the Rogers Commission's findings. It is written in the clear, precise in-the-moment style of an accomplished journalist who knows his subject inside in out. There are also two sets of photos.
