5 out of 5 stars Workers Comp Injury? You need to have this book!.......2004-08-29

I bought this book when I was first injured after getting so frustrated at not being able to get answers to my questions anywhere else. I searched the internet, talked to people, but I just kept going in circles. Then I discovered this book. It saved me. I have since hired a lawyer, however, you will feel more empowered and in control if you understand the process and the terminology. Plus, insurance companies try to "get away" with some things, assuming the average person won't know their workers comp rights. This book has saved me several times in that instance. (For example, they made doctor's appointments for me, sent me the info on their legal letterhead saying I was required to go to that particular doctor. Since I knew my rights from reading the book, I challenged them and didn't have to go to their doctor. Basically, I think they try these tactics just because most people aren't informed, and will just do what they say) It's so important to understand what is happening with your case, and what your rights are. I've been injured for four years, and find I research something in this book at least once a week. If you have a workers comp injury, you shouldn't be without this book! (Also, Nolo puts out a great book on filing for social security disability too) Best of luck to you!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for all parties.......2004-02-12

The average consumer has no idea of the laws and the rights he has when faced with an on the job injury.

This book is easy to read and understand. I am a nurse case manager for workers comp injuries and found this book extremely helpful. I encourage all my clients to obtain this book even if they have a lawyer. It gives them a solid knowledge base when the docs, attorneys and insurance people are throwing terms around.

It is well organized and follows a normal sequence of events. It was written by an attorney who handles workers comp cases.

I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Best info. to help you "right the wrong" of W/C claims.......1999-03-14

THIS BOOK WILL GIVE YOU THE KNOWLEDGE NEEDED TO FIGHT FOR YOUR LAWFUL RIGHTS -- DO NOT GIVE IN OR GIVE UP -- WITH THIS BOOK YOU WILL UNDERSTAND AND REALIZE THAT THE FIGHTERS ARE THE ONES THAT RECEIVE WHAT IS RIGHTFULLY/LAWFULLY INTITLED TO THEN.

KEEP FIGHTING AND BELIEVING THAT 'JUSTIFICATION FOR EMPLOYEER'S WRONG DOING CAN BE ACHIEVED.

READ THIS BOOK AND YOU WILL UNDERSTAND!!!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of the basic rights of an injured worker........1998-07-08

As a Workers' Compensation practitioner, this is the book that I recommend to all the aquaintances that ask for free advice. I also tend to recommend it to large companies that operate in CA and other states, because it gives the law and requirements in terms that a high school graduate can understand.

There is more emphasis in this book on answers and "by the number" processes than legal precedent or analysis, which I find easier to follow for the lay person. Chris Ball also has a number of forms included with simple completion directions.

If someone is looking for an overview with more legal justification or reference to statutes, the California Workers' Compensation Handbook is an excellent choice. This book by Stanford Herlick is updated every year, and has shorter sections with less hand-holding.

I think that the Herlick paperback is the reference source of choice for the attorney or paralegal to carry in the car or briefcase for quick review of issues and solutions.

5 out of 5 stars Easy and Straighforward.......2004-06-10

This book makes worker's compensation lw easy. I did not know anything about what I was entitled to, but this book laid it out for me in easy to understand terms and descriptions. It was not filled with the legal mumbo jumbo of some of the other books, and this is what I apprecated about the book. Yes it is easy and simple to read, but this is what I want and needed as an injured workr unaware of the laws and not very "law" savvy. Anyone could read this book and understnd it and get invaluable nkowledge about their rights. Unfortunately, though, if you were injured recently ithin the last year, it does not have any of the recent updates.

2 out of 5 stars Written for Kindegarteners.......2004-01-06

And about as useful as a coloring book. "Take Charge of Your Workers' Compensation Claim" by Christopher A. Ball is a much better book with lot's of information and helpful worksheets etc. I suppose if this is the only book you can find, it might be a little helpful. Unfortunately, there are no pearls of wisdom here. Sorry Ava. The text is very simple, the content is barely more than what common sense will tell you. As I mentioned, there are other books that really have great info. I appreciate the sentiment here, but the author ought to look at competitive books and write a new edition with some meat.

5 out of 5 stars Clear and to the point.......2002-04-26

This book is easy to read and it writen in "plain" english. I finaly understand what and how some of the Workers' Comp laws work and was very pleased. I recommend this book to anybody who is in the workers' comp system and is trying to understand the law and how to go about it.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful and easy to use.......2001-01-17

This book made it very easy to understand all the rules regarding workers comp. without all the confusing legalese found in the other books I tried. The forms included with the book came in very handy and made the whole process much easier than I expected. The tips and recommendations provided throughout the book are great! Before I read this book, I thought that I had no rights as an injured worker, now I know that I do have many and I know how to use access them.

5 out of 5 stars I now understand my rights as an injured worker.......2000-11-24

I have purchased other books written about worker's compensation and I have to say that "Facts Every Injured Worker Should Know" is definitely more comprehensive and detailed than all the others. This book covers everything about California's worker's compensation system, and is written in very simple easy to understand terms- two thumbs up! After reading this book, I now understand my rights as an injured worker.

Carver can break your heart without seeming to try, and there is that quality in many of these poems. Written in the mid 1980s, in the last years before his death, they are that mix of bittersweet memory, melancholy, and joy taken in the here and now. Living with poet Tess Gallagher in a house overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca in Washington (Carver grew up in Yakima, Washington), he writes of the days that pass there, the frequent rains and the boats passing on the water, and he tracks the course of fleeting emotions, often triggered by long-forgotten memories.

He has this ability to discover the extraordinary in the absolute ordinary, and he can bring together ideas with images drawn from everyday life that disturb and shock the heart, as when he recalls an old relationship while describing the drops and smears of blood left in a kitchen sink after gutting fish. As with his stories, these poems are written in plain, conversational language while evoking at the same time the darkly inexpressible. Simple and direct on the surface, they are like being in a small boat on deep waters.

5 out of 5 stars The real stuff.......2005-04-05

These poems have the beauty of life in them. They have real pain and an honest confrontation with whatever it is Carver meets, and tries to contend with. The honesty comes with the brokenness of the life .And there is a sense that the man is telling you what he feels and what he knows and what he has learned from life. And its not an easy life. It has martial discord, and distance between loved ones, and a lot of drinking, and mixed- up relationships. But what I think redeems it and makes the poetry of Carver so appealing is that it too talks genuinely of what is good and meaningful in the life. It can be a phone - call from a brother which connects them remotely again and reminds them of the world they had once together now largely gone. It can be a meditation on a writer ( Machado) which evokes a sense of how Literature can deepen our perception into the world, it can be a lament in understanding a former wife's feelings.
It is simple language and understandable. It tells a story. It has a lot of the disorder of life in it, and the kind of scandalous things most of us would rather do without . It has embarassment and shame and failure and poverty and regret and sorrow and love- much much love. As in the poem in which he takes the time to himself given by his beloved's absence but refuses to do one thing sleep in their common bed without her. It has a rough integrity of a real human being and poet.
This is the real stuff. Enjoy it.

                5 out of 5 stars Moving, Flowing.......1998-12-11

This is fine poetry to start Raymond Carver with. "The Ashtray" demonstrates an excellent portrayal of a selfish man and his girlfriend. "My Daughter's Apple Pie" is probably one of Carver's best works as far as showing his understatement style especially with a serious subject (which, actually, is very common with Carver). The book contains everything: nature, death, love, father/son relationships, water, everything. Carver's death is only a loss if you do not read his work.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful stuff - great positive energy.......1998-06-16

Just picked up this book for my dad for father's day. Of course, it was impossible not to dip in and sample some of the poems. They are really neat - touch a chord that resonates beautifully.

5 out of 5 stars Gems of Everyday Life........1997-12-08

For fans of Raymond Carver, it may seem strange to start with this book of poetry, as I did, rather than with one of his collections of short stories. I can only say that I came away from this work amazed at what this writer was able to do with a short form of writing and determined to rush out and start reading his short stories as well. These are reflective pieces of a man who has experienced and processed much, who has had time to reflect on the true essentials of life. While these poems are beautifully and artfully written, they are filled with universal messages that will reach, touch and change every reader. The title poem alone, with its theme of personal growth, is worth the price of the book. This is poetry for every man (and woman) written by someone who was clearly not.
