Book Description

Philippe Starck describes him as a "mystic in a country which is no longer mystic." Drew Philip calls his buildings "land art" that "struggle to emerge from the earth." He is the only architect to have won the discipline's four most prestigious prizes: the Pritzker, Carlsberg, Praemium Imperiale, and Kyoto Prize. His name is Tadao Ando, and he is the world's greatest living architect. Combining influences from Japanese tradition with the best of Modernism, Ando has developed a completely unique building aesthetic that makes use of concrete, wood, water, light, space, and nature in a way that has never been witnessed in architecture. Ando has designed award-winning private homes, churches, museums, apartment complexes, and cultural spaces throughout Japan, as well as in France, Italy, Spain, and the USA. This book, created at the height of Ando's illustrious career, presents his complete works to date.

5 out of 5 stars Sensibility.......2007-02-17

Thanks Taschen, this book is perfect, the size, the case, the cover!!! beautiful picures, plans and text. That is how a archtecture book is done, in years, people will talk about the sensibility in put Ando's work in a book.
The travel begins in the case, with a familiar pattern of Ando's work, the cover, beautifully taken, and the climax of book presentation is the hardcover, with Ando pattern, perect!
Inside, have everything oh Ando's work, the text, the picures and the plans are superb, but the top os te top is the sketches os his works.

Thanks again Taschen..

5 out of 5 stars Awesome photos of Awesome architecture.......2007-01-29

A wonderful, large format, book covering all of Ando's significant work into the early 2000's. It is so interesting to see his early work, how clear a path he set for himself in his career and how carefully he has kept on the path.

4 out of 5 stars ando's huge book.......2007-01-18

the book is amazing... arrived in great condition and amazingly quick... the book was much bigger than what i had in mind though... huge and heavy...

5 out of 5 stars Great monograph for your collection~.......2005-01-29

This is the latest monograph on Tadao Ando and despite its steep price, its sheer size alone can justify its value. Although the title states "complete works," the monograph focuses on select projects from the mid-70's to the present (there is however, a list of his complete works in the back with single b/w photos in an index format). Although many of the projects that are featured here can be found in other Ando monographs, the extra large photographs of his projects reveal a new sense of space to projects that we are already familiar with. In addition, this monograph also features preliminary sketches of projects and some photos that have not been published before. New projects that you won't be able to find in his other monographs include the 4x4 house, Ground Zero Project, etc. A great book to have in your collection and so far, the grandest of all of Ando's publications.

this books introduce lots of important works of Tadao Ando
good print quality, nice pictures with reasonable price

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Book from Taschen.......2007-01-22

This is the first Taschen Basic Architecture volume about a living architect. The earlier Taschen volumes have been about the Modernist masters such as Mies, Le Corbusier, Loos, Wright, Kahn and Neutra. If there is any living architect who can measure up to this Pantheon of Greats, it is Pritzker Prize winner, Tadao Ando.

Like the other volumes in this series, there is a short biographical essay, followed by short chapters that focus on key works. The German Publishing Company Taschen publishes some of the best architectural books. Their books are always of the highest quality and reasonably priced. At Ten Dollars, it is hard to imagine a better introduction to the works of one of the most important architects of the Twentieth Century. Highly recommended.

      Book Description

Tadao Ando is the most revered Japanese architect at work today. Beloved and admired for his powerful, meditative spaces and his sensual and yet refined use of the materials of the modern trade-wood, steel, concrete, glass-Ando's work resonates with profound intelligence, unpretentious elegance, and an almost palpable sense of harmony. Tadao Ando at Naoshima: Art, Architecture, Nature showcases the latest work in an on going process of building by Tadao Ando at the acclaimed Naoshima Island Art Complex. Featured here is Ando's recently completed Chichu Art Museum, an underground facility built on the small island in the Inland Sea of Japan. With respect for the landscape and the traditional use of the land as terraced salt fields, Ando adapted the architecture to the topography, by burying much of the complex volume below the ground. Ando's Naoshima is a stunning demonstration of architectural virtuosity.

Tadao Ando, one-time truck driver and boxer, is a self-taught Japanese architect whose winning of the 1995 Pritzker Prize has given him preeminence among his gifted generation. Ando reinvents Japan's architectural tradition in contemporary terms, using minimalist concrete structures of monumental scale, reminiscent of the Brutalist architecture of America's Louis Kahn. Editor Francesco Dal Co, an Italian architectural historian, has produced an excellent survey of Ando's career to date, along with a critical assessment of his work.

5 out of 5 stars See my dream in atchitecture.......2005-11-07

I think he's slightly old-fashioned but he's still attractive person. I took part in his lecture in Seoul. He looks vert kind and ordinary old ages. But he always try to find new aspects in buildings.

5 out of 5 stars a very impressive work ...........2005-10-18

i have to call this book a work of art, because it shows Ando's concepts starting from the cover design, then shows us the works of ando which i think are connected with his soul and not just a repetitive themes....

      5 out of 5 stars Touching silence.......2002-09-08

Francesco dal Co. give us the best aproach to Tadao Ando work. An architect that focus on the most subtil things that makes a certain space (prototyped space, like he says) sacralized. The perfect control of the light and shadow, the minimalist use of the materials in harmony with the also minimalist use of the forms themself wich, in the most poetic way, express the Japanese filosophy (ZEN thoughts) of continous space - a space both of the contruted and non-construted (natural) life.

Much more aspects of Tadao Ando architecture and life (can we distinguish between the work and life of an artist?) are treated in the best way in this book, wich includes a compilation of his own writings and an antology of the critic on his work. The quality of the paper and photographs are also very good, although architecture can't be experienced trough a simple 2 dimension layout (there is nor the 3rd dimension nor the 4th - time).

Now, it's all about architectural taste...

      5 out of 5 stars Genius........2002-08-01

Ando is amazing. Recommended if you like him or just concrete/glass construction.

      4 out of 5 stars A very good introduction to Ando's work........2000-05-03

Very comprehensive with a lot of good photographs, although too many of them are monochromatic. To someone who's familiar with Tadao Ando's work it emphasizes important aspects of the architect's work such as the penetration of light and the feeling of his transcendental spaces, but to a "novice" it may be a little bit hard to swallow. The presentation is excellent with some additional information about the sites, time of construction etc. The last part includes instructive articles written by critics and by Ando himself. Tadao Ando's own writings are a must to anyone who loves architecture. A good book on a stupendous architect!

Tadao Ando, maybe the famous Japanese architect in the world. If you just a beginner reader of architecter, and you don't wanna read too many essays, but you want to know most of Ando's works, then choose this books. It's the best Ando book you can buy in this price, maybe you can buy a cheaper one, but the photos, blueprints, and draws in this book is more and better than other cheaper book. The printing and binding are both good.

          Book Description

On the island of Naoshima off the picturesque coast of western Japan, Japanese architect Tadao Ando has built a spectacular structure comprised of basic geometric forms. Situated on cliffs overlooking the straits of Seto-Naikai, the building provides a congenial setting for the presentation of numerous undisputed masterpieces of artistic reduction, including several of Claude Monet's incomparable Water Lilies, monumental sculptures by Walter de Maria, and meditative light installations by James Turrell. Here, on the island of Naoshima off the picturesque coast of western Japan, the heirs of the publisher Fukutake have realizing posthumously his lifelong dream of an expansive museum environment, a private estate filled with sculptures, installations, Land Art, and artists' houses.

The Colours of Light is a beautiful, dense little book that showcases English photographer Richard Pare's stunning takes on the respected, influential Japanese architect Tadao Ando. Pare photographed Ando's work over a 10-year period, and with a remarkable consistency has realized the intricacies of Ando's constructed confrontations between architecture and nature. Pare translates this dialogue with great skill in his photographs and easily manages to convey (convert?) the conversations about space, the absence/presence dialectic, that all buildings declaim. In his overview essay at the end of the book, Pare writes: "Space itself is immovable. It has no movement, though all movement is in space. All space is actually static, and potentially dynamic. We conceive space statically, but we experience it dynamically. The space that is rendered in a photograph is a static space of potential movement." His photographs bear out, but overcome, this tension. Tom Heneghan's introduction wonders if Pare's career as a "photographer of architecture rather than an architectural photographer" has enabled him to so keenly grasp the nature of Ando's work. Whatever the reason, this is a remarkable collection. --Mark Thwaite, Amazon.co.uk

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A good architectural photography book.......2005-03-17

The value of this book largely depends on how familiar you are with Ando's work. For example, if you have read articles about his Water Temple from architectural magazines, it is really nice to zoom in and take a close look at several details shown in this book. On the other hand, if you don't know Water Temple project, it will be hard for you to catpure the overall structure of this incredible building from this book. Simply put, this book focuses more on photography and details rather than overall structure. You need to study these projects in order to appreciate the details. Of course, the pictures are really nice.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful little book.......2001-11-09

Beautiful little portfolio showcasing some of Tadao Ando's best known work. Richard Pare's photographs are excellent. The book's design is also very elegant in its minimalism. A must have.

3 out of 5 stars ando ando ando.......2001-07-27

Ando's work is splendidly displayed by Pare. But it would be very hard to take a bad picture of one of Tadao's buildings anyway. Great eye candy for anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Ando and Pare - What rice is to sushi!!.......1999-07-26

If you have a slither of appreciation for the finer things on this planet, you definately should not pass up the opportunity to own this title. A book that left me speechless and I mean that!! - 10 Stars -

5 out of 5 stars The Nature of the Unnatural.......1998-04-17

The sublime architecture of Ando, delivered on a haunting polychromatic plate by R. Pare. The photos discover many of the wonderful uses of space and form Ando masters and manipulates to tame light into a force that is nearly unrivaled by any other modern architect. Certainly it makes the oft ludicrous shapes of several (ahem) "Experienced" LA-types appear clumsy and banal (Basque'ing in their own glory perhaps?). Most wonderful is the way in which he can make one look at the 'ordinary' materials used (exposed concrete, etc.), and focus on the forms themselves; or better, to enjoy the materials in their place. Why a '9' rather than a perfect score? Though less artistic, I would have enjoyed a few more full-shots along with the other photos to better put each structure into a perspective understandable by those of us unable to visit the sites in person.
