Book Description
The topic of fruit and seed production is given a broad and comprehensive treatment, with chapters covering the onset of flowering through to the development and growth of fruits and seeds, and finally to ecological and evolutionary aspects of fruiting.
Book Description
The newest addition to our well-known series of mushroom guides, MUSHROOMS OF HAWAII is a beautifully illustrated book filled with scenic photographs of Hawaii and detailed photographs of over 230 mushrooms species. An essential reference guide for the novice or advanced mycologist, this handy reference tool provides you with all the information you need to make your foraging a success, including chapters on mushroom identification, bountiful mushroom-hunting spots in Hawaii, and a guide to the seasonality of Hawaiian mushrooms. Whether hunting Copelandia cyanescens (magic mushrooms) in the pasture grasses high in the mountains of Maui or foraging for Laetiporus (chicken of the woods), one of the edible mushrooms found in Hawaii, this book is the must-have guide for fungophiles.
Customer Reviews:
Hawaiian mushrooms galore!.......2002-08-05
For anyone familiar with mushroom gathering in temperate zones, Hawaii would seem to offer scant picking . . . until you pick up MUSHROOMS OF HAWAII. Unbelievable! The mushrooms in Hawaii are harder to find, yes. Some are very different from what you're likely to encounter on the mainland. Some are old friends: morels. Others are well known, colorful enemies: Amanita muscaria. All are beautifully illustrated. Even if you aren't a hunter of wild mushrooms, the photographs alone will have you entranced. And there's a lot else in these pages as well, from recipes, to descriptions of the places where the elusive fungi grow. The bibliography is excellent, providing plenty of further reading for the aficionado and testimony to the careful research that went into this work. Is there anything wrong with it? I do have one complaint. It's much too nice to pack on a field trip. Maybe the authors will come out soon with a small field guide to take along. That way I can leave this volume safe at home where I can go over those great photos at my leisure and not worry about what might happen to the book when stuffed into a knapsack.

Customer Reviews:
Great intro to plants.......2004-04-08
Very well written explanations cover such topics as roots, reproduction, and seedling development. What it lacks in depth on some subject is makes up for in variety of topics cover. The "Inside the Plant" section is detailed including diagrams of leaf cells and a discussion of stoma, xylem, and phloem. The only negative comment I could make is that the explanation of photosynthesis is not very detailed **compared to** other topics. I was impressed with the inclusion of the comment in the beginning of the book that warns young botanist not to collect wild plans even if there are lots of them. Book Description
In this book we undertake one of the first global-scale comparisons of the relationships between tropical plants and frugivorous animal communities, comparing sites within and across continents. In total, 12 primary contributors, including noted plant and animal ecologists, present newly-analyzed long-term datasets on the floristics and phenological rhythms of their study sites, identifying important seed dispersers and key plant taxa that sustain animal communities in Africa, Madagascar, Australasia, and the Neotropics.

Book Description
Genetic modification is one of the most important and controversial issues facing the food industry today. Drawing on an international team of contributors, Fruit and Vegetable Biotechnology explores its major impact on fruit and vegetable cultivation and subsequent food processing. The book begins with an analysis of the available tools and methods, from the selection and isolation of genes to safety issues such as the stability of transgenes. The contributors discuss the range of properties that have been the subject of genetic enhancement, including agronomic traits such as fruit quality and resistance to environmental stresses, as well as sensory properties such as color, flavor, processing functionality, and nutritional quality. In addition, the text also examines the use of molecular markers in plant breeding. The subsequent chapters consider how biotechnology can improve plant defense mechanisms and also extend the post-harvest life of fruit and vegetables. Thorough case studies illustrate the efforts involved and the positive effects resulting from genetic modification, and also offer insight into future applications. To complete their survey of this field, the authors explore the vital issues of consumer attitudes and risk assessment. Fruit and Vegetable Biotechnology is an important contribution to a key area of debate, and is essential reading for everyone involved in the cultivation and processing of fruit and vegetables.

Book Description
Biological control of plant diseases and plant pathogens is of great significance in forestry and agriculture. There is great incentive to discover biologically active natural products from higher plants that are better than synthetic agrochemicals and are much safer, from a health and environmental point-of-view. The development of natural products such as herbicides, fungicides, and their role in biological control of plant diseases, indicates a reduction in environmental and health hazards. Allelopathic techniques offer a real future in solving several problems, for instance biological control of plant pests. This book is organized around the indication that allelochemicals can be employed for biological control of plant pathogens and plant diseases. Specifically, this volume focuses on (i) discovery and development of natural product based fungicides for agriculture, (ii) direct use of allelochemicals as well as indirect effects through cover crops and organic amendments for plant parasitic pest control and (iii) application of allelopathy in pest management.
