Exceptional research Job.......2004-06-07
I ordered this book without never had the opportunity to look inside it. I found a very well written book, full of informations about the Adolf Hitler-Albert Speer Reichschancellery, a really impressive building of great historical value. The paper is great. The book is full of exceptional color and black and white pictures of the building (front, back, inside) that I think you can't find elsewhere. If you, like me, are interested in reading and studying the Third Reich history I can onestly say that this book is simply a musthave. An exceptional item. In the end I point out the section dedicated to the german manufacturers that were responsible for the construction of the building. Fantastic. You can find 1930's advertising pages from those industries, things that I really think you can't find elsewhere. And last but not least you will find the architectural plans for the building so you will have the opportunity to understand completly the Reichschancellery structure and appering. My only complaint is that I thought this book was a little bigger (not in terms of pages, they are 126 if I remember correctly, just in terms of dimensions, but this is my fault and in the end it is not something that you can't pass over). Maybe I would have appreciated some more pictures of the ruined building, after the bombings. Pictures taken by the Allied troups that entered the building. I think that there must be a lot of them somewhere. Anyway you can buy this book with confidence. Cowdery's did a great job for sure!
FANTASTIC.......2003-04-29
A must for anyone interested in the Third Reich, Hitler, Speer and WWII Berlin. This book is a real one-of-a-kind jem. It contains information and pictures that cannot be found elsewhere. One of the finest books on the subject I have ever come across!
a fresh view.......2003-02-09
The Third Reich came to an abrupt end almost sixty years ago and, though time alone cannot heal all wounds, today it is possible to look with fresh eyes upon things that once produced emotions of hatred, fear, suffering and cruel death. Of themselves, public buildings are usually seen as neither good nor evil, though the Coliseum in Rome can never outlast the muffled cries of the early Christians and others who were once tortured and killed there for the entertainment of the masses. Nor can the vastness of that public square outside the Kremlin buildings in Moscow be visited without the mind flashing back to a not-too-distant time when military aggression and might paraded there to intimidate the whole world.
And so it is ý or was ý with the seat of power in Adolf Hitlerýs Berlin. When he came to that power in January, 1933, the Reichschancellery consisted of a run-down eighteenth century mansion connected to a small and colorless office building put up in 1929-30. Obviously not an edifice indicative of a new political movement that presented itself as dynamic and energetic. And as a tangible symbol of that energy, a gigantic new complex was created to exemplify that movement, in less than one year, including the furnishings.
Much has been written about Professor Albert Speer. He was a talented artist who had the organizational skills of a modern corporate CEO and, like the other zealots of his masterýs political movement, he possessed seemingly boundless energy. It was Speer who designed and brought this mammoth complex to life, this New Reichschancellery.
When the building was opened to the public on January 12, 1939, a new book documenting its creation was already off the press ý an elaborate and beautiful book of coffee table-sized proportions (12x15") that presented the new building in impressive color and black-and-white photos and in the glowing words of its new inhabitant, as well as those of well-known architects, artists and designers. This book is a rare and welcome addition to oneýs history library ý when it can be found.
Ray Cowdery took upon himself the task of preserving the New Reichschancellery ý in word and photograph ý and he published his first book dedicated to that subject in 1987. Produced in the same size as Speerýs book was in 1939, Cowderyýs Hitlerýs New German Reichschancellery In Berlin 1938 ý 1945 included many of the original photos in color and black-and-white as were found in Speerýs publication, together with information about the eventual destruction of the complex by the Soviets in December 1949.
Today, Cowderyýs 1987 publication is almost as hard to find as Speerýs original book. On the other hand, much more information has come to light over the past sixteen years. That brings us up to today, with Ray and Josephine Cowderyýs new book, The New German Reichschancellery In Berlin 1938 ý 1945. Simply speaking, the Cowderys have outdone themselves. While this new book is slightly smaller than its two predecessors (9x11½"), it contains twice the number of pages as the 1987 edition and equals that of Speerýs original. The number of color and black-and-white photos has greatly increased, while the quality of the photos equals that of the 1939 work. It is enhanced by drawings and paintings of the Voss Street construction site. New and expanded information is present, including material on the Old Reichschancellery, the furniture and silverware created for the new seat of government, and biographical sketches of the major artists and designers who contributed to this monumental building project.
It is difficult to limit my comments and my praise for the Cowderysý new book. One may only hope that they will consider producing companion works of similar depth and quality on the Führerbau and the Haus der Deutschen Kunst in Munich, the Berghof on the Obersalzberg, and other monumental sites so often lost to the ages.
Reichschancellery.......2003-01-28
I recently obtained a copy of Ray & Josephine Cowdery's new book THE NEW GERMAN REICHSCHANCELLERY. I have several of their previous books, including an older book on the same subject. This book is different; it's more comprehensive, with more, never-seen-before photographs and the chronological progression of the Reichschancellery itself. . I have an extensive German WWII reading library. I would rate their new Reichschancellery book among the top five books in my library. I have been to Europe several times with the Cowdery's. This book parallels their superbly conducted WWII German history tours. You can count on three things when you pick up a book written by the Cowdery's, its: (1) interesting, (2) comprehensive, and (3) factual. The first time I picked up the REICHSCHANCELLERY book it was fun just to take a cursory look at it and review all the photos and illustrations of the Reichschancellery itself. The next time I reviewed all the photos in detail, helping me link the various rooms of the Reichschancellery together. There were so many great photographs that it was like taking a virtual tour of the Reichschancellery itself. The third time I sat down and digested all the information surrounding the planning, building, and operation of the Reichschancellery. Nothing was left out. The Reichschancellery was one of the great buildings of the 20th century; it should be studied from political, historical, and engineering perspectives. This book covers it all. If you are a student of WWII German history this is a "must have" book you'll review over and over again.
Book Description
This is a quality hardbound, large format book, filled with amazing color photographs. Text and captions are in German, with a separate English language photo caption translation sheet included.
Walter Frenz was a young German Air Force staff photographer, best known as the cameraman for Leni Reifenstahl's groundbreaking film 'Triumph of the Will', in which new cinematic techniques made their debut. Stationed at Hitler's Headquarters in World War Two, he experimented with color photography on the subjects around him. After the war, the negatives remained buried for nearly 50 years.
Taken at Hitler's New Reichschancellery in Berlin, the full color photos contained in this book are astounding. What is contained is nothing less than a never-before-seen, intimate view of Hitler and his entourage at the Reichschancellery in Berlin. The story of daily operations and social life at this magnificent government headquarters that Albert Speer built for Hitler in 1938 comes to life in sharp, crisp, living color.
Seen as never before are all the diplomatic, military, political and social notables of the Third Reich who frequented the Reichschancellery in the 'Golden Years' prior to the outbreak of World War Two. Of course Adolf Hitler himself is depicted in numerous settings and entourages. Everyone came to the Reichschancellery to confer, parade, be promoted, be awarded, or just socialize at the center of government of the Third Reich.
Not only does this book contain over 100 photos never before published, they are all in high quality color, not the mediocre, washed-out color we are used to seeing from this period. Agfakrome predated Kodak, and is still unsurpassed to this day. German optical superiority is evident on nearly every page. Full page and gatefold pages comprise over half the photos of every subject matter which one can imagine being associated with the center of government in Berlin during the days of the Third Reich.

Doesnt live up to billing regarding picture quality. Grainy. I expected a lot more. Subject matter boring. Wouldnt buy again. Stay away from this whole series. I bought others and all the same
NICE COLOR, BUT A LOT OF "FILLER".......2006-02-03
As A Collector I purchased a few books recently on
WW2 and Germany. As the books in this series are Highly
recomended for History Buffs seeking Rarer-Color Photos,
I was dissapointed in the content of this book.As there are
quite a few interior and exterior shots of Hitler's Chancellery,
there are just as many photos (if not MORE),of Nazi Officials
"Filling-in" the remainder. There are other books on this
subject, but for the costs, readers should try and view some
of these first. The publisher, ARNDT, has other great volumes
available in color, but while studying this subject, I'll
look elsewhere, for a better presentation of this.
Book Description
The Cottington Archive reluctantly announces that more information about the infamous Lady Cottington has surfaced: a scrapbook compiled by the fairy smasher herself of her correspondence with luminaries such as Queen Victoria, Annie Oakley, Igor Stravinsky, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Andrew Lang, P.T. Barnum, and more. All about fairies, these hilarious letters contain everything from wisdom to suggestions to chastisement. Lady Cottington has made notes in the margins not to mention smashed fairies throughout (will she EVER STOP this nasty habit?!). And the fairies...ah the fairies...they too have done their part, sprinkling magic and mayhem throughout.
Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Letters, a facsimile reproduction of Lady Cottington's original volume, combines the nutty artistry of the first two Lady Cottington books with delightful novelty components. Containing "actual" letters, invoices for "spiritual services," a fairy Valentine, an invitation from Alice Liddell to tea, and more, this newest interactive addition to the Lady Cottington series is the most innovative to date.

nice artwork and intresting writing.......2007-09-22
I enjoyed the artwork in this book. And the creativite that went into the letters.
A Wonderful Tribute to our Friends the Fairies.......2007-09-08
My daughter and I love reading about fairies and this book was delightful. It is creative and beautiful to look at.
Faerie Wonderful.......2007-01-12
This book is so nice I bought one for my mom for her birthday! Of course it was part of a huge stack we took to have Brian Froud sign - which makes it even more sweet! Very funny reading and the drawings are just fabulous!
Such fun! Such artistry!.......2005-12-30
I am a big fan of Lady Cottington's work, and this is another great installment in the series.
The artistry is amazing - the amount of work required to not only paint (or "squash") the fairies is immense, but then to paint a "mirror" on the opposite page, and have it look like a fairy really was pressed between the pages - I can't even begin to imagine how much work it took!
The authors clearly had fun putting this together. Although there is no "plot", you get a sense of a story - Lady Angelica is plaqued by fairies, and is also missing her mother, so she writes letters to famous people and collects the responses, with further tauntings by fairies.
The books is extremely amusing! There were moments when I laughed out loud - for instance, on the inside back cover, there is a list of the letters and their authors, as well as a short bio on the author. W. S. Gilbert is described as being "...the very model of an English playwright/lyricist."
One of the most Unusual, Original and Unique book I have ever had ! .......2005-09-21
This is a must have for Froud fans, this book is so incredibly imaginative. Kind of a pop-up, pull-out 3-D for adult faery lovers. Totally unexpected silliness (even for Froud), also the same touching sweetness as with all the Cottington Books, Sweetness you say, a book about Squished Faeries? YES! believe it or not, very touching, I was quite surprised when I read the first Cottington, and it has continued on with this latest release, but with special little seals, envelopes to open and read, such fun, and almost like you really are seeing into some other person personal past life. That's why I so carefully opened and removed the content of each little envelope, it felt like they may crumble away with age. I really was taken with this book as you can tell. But then don't take my word for it see for yourself. This book is special!

Book Description
These days, trend-conscious tastemakers from Martha Stewart to the Pottery Barn are celebrating the art of the botanical specimen. Yet this art form has enjoyed popularity for centuries. This beautiful and lavishly illustrated book is the first to present botanical specimens, herbaria, and nature prints as artworks to be collected-and even created anew.
This engaging interpretation of the colorful history of plant collection traces its progress from a hazardous natural science on eighteenth-century explorations, to a fad among Victorian-era ladies and clergyman, to a keen pursuit for today's art collectors, garden enthusiasts, and crafters.
The Pressed Plant offers a thorough representation of four different art forms consisting of or created with actual plants: botanical specimens, in which parts of or entire plants are attached to archival paper; herbaria, or bound books holding a variety of plant specimens; nature prints, images made directly from plants; and sun prints, which are produced when a plant is placed on light-sensitive paper and exposed to the sun. A detailed appendix includes instructional material, sources for materials, and a collector's buying guide.

The Pressed Plant.......2005-07-25
I was disappointed with this book - I was expecting something completely different. Very staid and did not give the information on pressed plants that I was looking for.
Beautiful, inspiring, unusual book.......2004-11-23
I love The Art of the Pressed Plant. The authors mine the history, the science and the art of preserved plants in this
rich book. It was fascinating to learn about the people who have collected plants throughout history, what that meant, and what that was like for them. It was inspiring and surprising to see the beautiful specimens. You will not be disappointed if you get this book.
The Pressed Plant.......2002-02-21
The author provides a well written history of plant preservation and pressing with summaries, comments, illustrations, and a comprehensive "how to" section. Anyone interested in pressed plant collecting should own this book.
Very impressive, clearly written, beautifully illustrated!.......2001-02-23
As an avid fan of leaves and wildflowers, with not a few pressed examples stuck in books and files, I was glad to find a book that celebrates all kinds of pressed plants, from ferns to seaweeds (!), as art. There's an amazing fossilized impression of a prehistoric plant, photos of Victorian botanists' carefully pressed samples, and sun prints done with photographic paper over a century ago. Plus a few modern artists' examples. This book proves that Mother Nature has been one of the best artists all along, and that we humans can have a sort of artistic partnership by preserving botanical specimens in one way or another. The wide array of images is mouth-watering; and the book can be used as a sort of tasting party to get you started on a new collection, or, using the how-to at the back of the book, a new hobby or art.
Gorgeous detail for pressing plants! Buy two!.......2000-07-12
For years I searched for a book that would direct me through the process of pressing ferns and other plants. This is it! This exquisite book is a treasure! The author shows the nature lover how to complete the process of preserving plants, just as the Victorians did. However, this wonderful hobby did not originate with the Victorians, they just renewed it with avid inspiration and volumes of renditons and renderings. This book takes the reader through the history of plant preservation, and shows the eager "artist" three different techniques for display: using the real thing, printing with paints and inks, and sun printing. This book is so wonderful, you may want to have two. The numerous copies of original and rare prints are so gorgeous, you may need an extra volume to "cheat" with: you know remove from the volume and, voila, inexpensive yet exquisite art!

The Afterlife of Flowers.......2002-04-05
Good reference material and some philosophy about nature. Beautiful photographs show what some commonly found flowers look like when pressed. This book is includes enlarged photos, comments, and a chart with smaller photos showing each flower's common name, width and it's location in the book. 96 pages, hardcover.
Simply Superb!.......2002-01-06
This isn't a how-to book, but the gorgeous photos do serve as a valuable guide to what some commonly found flowers will look like when pressed. The book is comprised of enlarged photos and comments, ending with an id chart of smaller photos along with each flower's common name, actual width, and the page it was featured on.
If you like the look of pressed flowers, you might want to check out Laura Martin's Art and Craft of Pounding Flowers. Pounding an object's pigment onto fabric and paper creates beautiful and uniquely pressed flower like images. Very nice.
Flower Nirvana.......2001-03-09
Janie Feldman Gross takes the art of flower pressing to new dimensions. Each specimen is a work of art unto itself - the colors, textures, delicately graceful lines - coupled with Janie's poetic observations, all add up to a book that is both breathtakingly beautiful and inspiring.
Revealing Hidden Beauty in Flowers.......2000-01-14
For most, the term "pressed flowers" conjures the shriveled and crumbling remains of faded prom corsages. Nothing could be more strikingly different from the pressed flora you'll encounter in THE AFTERLIFE OF FLOWERS. Creator Janie Feldman Gross invites us to a world where flowers reveal their remarkable and astonishing beauty...long after bloom. She guides us through a breathtaking collection of specimens -- most grown in her own garden -- each transformed by weight and time. Bringing her artist's eye to the task, Gross combines spectacular photographic images with her own spare and carefully placed commentary. The result is a visual ballet -- flowers partnered by prose. This is a book to be enjoyed for it uniqueness, its visual aesthetic and its underlying message; if we are patient and take the time to observe the world around us, there is unexpected beauty therein.
Much More Than a Coffee Table Art Book.......1999-12-13
This book is a wonderful work of art, and a bit of philosophy about nature as well. From the colors, to the prose, to even the position of the flowers on each page, the author has brilliantly created a piece of inspiration. It is hard to imagine a better art book on the subject. Buy it for someone you love, or just buy it for yourself!
