Book Description
This timely book reflects are awakening of interest in religious faiths and the emergence of a global exchange of architecture and culture.
While Spain's Rafael Monco has just completed a cathedral in Los Angeles, Britain's Thomas Heatherwick is designing a Buddhist temple in Japan, John Pawson is working on a Cistercian monastery in the Czech Republic, and Richard Meier has completed his Millennium Cathedral in Rome. As one Wallpaper* pundit commented, "religion is getting a redesign," and the architect's faith is as unimportant as his nationality. These buildings represent not only new ways of looking at religious architecture, but a vibrant cultural exchange that brings together the highest aesthetic and spiritual ideals, transcending religious and national boundaries.
New Spiritual Architecture looks at the approaches contemporary architects have taken to religious or meditative space, focusing on churches, chapels, temples, synagogues, and mosques that have been built in the last few years and represent a late-twentieth/early-twenty-first century aesthetic. These buildings demonstrate how new ideas and developments in urban, domestic, and public architecture inform designs for spaces intended for inspiration, worship, or meditation. The book is organized into five categories. "New Traditions" features buildings with radical formal idiosyncrasies. "Interventions" looks at urban sites designed to fit into the built landscape. "Retreats" are isolated sanctuaries that incorporate their natural settings as vital elements. "Grand Icons" examines the recent revival of large-scale religious architecture. Finally, the buildings in "Modest Magnificence" mold humble materials to generate a contemplative simplicity.
Each of the dozens of sites explored is graced with thorough documentation, including interior and exterior photography, both close-up and birds-eye views, alongside detailed floor plans accompanied by detailed captions. A sophisticated text by renowned architecture critic Phyllis Richardson weaves together the various themes and provides a crucial framework for considering what architecture has to say about the changing conditions of contemporary society, its beliefs, relationships, and material production.
Other Details: 200 full-color illustrations, 100 line drawings

New Spiritual Architecture.......2007-04-02
A compilation of recent inovatory church architecture from around the world with a brief historical overview. Varying photographic coverage and plans, and with coffee table text. Generally slanted towards "high art" architecture. A worthwhile current reference for anyone involved in church architecture.
Phenomenal book.......2006-12-17
New Spiritual Architecture introduces the reader to modern-day architectonics within the sacred space of worship. Abandoning the superannuated architecture of by-gone times, this book exposes the observer to the most progressive consecrated structures erected in recent times, that also reveal a revolutionary comprehension over what makes a space sacred. Take, for example, the Night Pilgrimage Chapel in Locherboden, Austria. A simple, rectangular, concrete chapel with interiors that are fully exposed to the elements. There is a simple concrete altar and chair for the celebrant to sit, while to the rear - again in simple concrete - is the sacristy. The congregation assembles on the outside of the chapel while the priest, facing them, celebrates the mass. To fully appreciate the avant-garde appearance of this structure you simply must look at the picture in the book, or travel to Austria and see it for yourself.
There are many other projects in this book that follow the Muslim, Jewish, and Buddhist praxes assimilating unconventional sacred architectures. They, too, exhibit that same enthusiastic disposition to revolutionize the orthodoxy of their designs that the Catholic Church did with the Night Pilgrimage Chapel in Austria.
Superb Overview.......2006-03-13
It is a superb overview that evokes the immedeate desire for book II. Modernism and spiritual design are a brave neccessity for the 21st Century and this book is a great entree.
Something More than Le Corbusier's Notre Dame du Haut.......2005-08-13
I am a Fulbright Scholar in art history and I have found this survey of modern religious structures a wonderful companion to most general art history texts, which usually only feature two or three works of religious architecture after the 1600s.
A breathtaking survey of modern global architecture .......2005-02-13
New Spiritual Architecture is a breathtaking survey of modern global architecture utilized by various religious faiths, and the worldwide exchange of cultural aspects in architecture. From the design of a Buddhist temple and ossuary in Japan to a Los Angeles cathedral to a Cistercian monastary in the Czech Republic and more, New Spiritual Architecture combines keenly insightful text with beautiful full-color photography and a handful of black-and-white diagrams for an architectural tour like no other. A "must-have" for architecture aficonados, and a treasury of inspiration both mundane and spiritual, especially for modern builders and designers.

It changed the direction of my business.......2000-06-24
After reading Secrets of Sacred Space, I realized that my business name 'THE GEOMANCER' commanded that I learn much more about the spiritual side of geomancy. The book enlightened me in such a manner that I decided to re-direct my primary business focus of FENG SHUI to the crucial service of making sure my client's homes are 'healthy' to live in. It has also convinced me to begin meditation. Thank you Chuck, for your well-written guide. I urge others to read, learn and assist us in our quest for a healthier earth.
Secrets of Sacred Space.......2000-05-18
Chuck Pettis is keeping the tradition of sacred stone circles alive! This is a well-balanced book, taking either a traditional, scientific approach to sacred spaces, or encouraging people to create their own power centers. Secrets of Sacred Space is filled with photos, drawings, diagrams, and a brilliant color insert. If the geometry gets too overwhelming, you'll be comforted with the wisdom and history within. Ever wondered why certain place just don't feel right? Learn about negative energy and the good energy of power centers all over the world. Secrets of Sacred Space is your chance to re-connect with the earth.
Esoteric AND Practical.......2000-01-20
This is a book about the art and science of earth monuments. It is written in a friendly and accessible style with many rich anecdotes by a man who has committed many years to not only the study of sacred place, but to practical construction of new monuments. Surprisingly, it is not an exhaustive documentation or analysis of ancient sites, though there is some brief discussion of these. It is, first and foremost, a practical guide for those who wish to investigate the subtle aspects of place and to create sacred places today. For example, each chapter ends with a concise summary of the information covered in the chapter and a list of suggested exercises. The appendices include tables of the angles for significant solar and lunar events for several latitudes.
The most remarkable thing about this book is the seamless blend of the mystical with the mathematical. Chuck Pettis is a mathematician, but is also a well known dowser and ley line hunter. Expect to have earth angels and subtle energies explained in one breath, and the mathematics of planetary motion and symbolic geometry in the next. I am enthusiastic about this book. It has inspired me to begin design of my own stone circle. But I will admit a bias. I have had the pleasure of knowing the author personally for many years.
Secrets of Sacred Space.......2000-01-16
If you have any interest in sacred spaces like stone circles, then this is the book for you. This is the most comprehensive, detailed book out there on the subject. While the book gives you an introduction into understanding and creating sacred space, it is chock full of beautiful pictures of beautiful places. Besides that, it also gives you the details you need to know to create your own powerful sacred space. Now you could say that I'm biased because the author is my dad, but he has been doing research on this topic since I was born, 27 years ago, and he is a top notch expert on sacred space. Another great thing about this book is that it isn't boring reading. Chuck Pettis introduces the reader to concepts of sacred space by telling stories about his adventures that are really amazing, like the whole chapter on the Ellis Hollow stone circle. Some of the stories are scary to, like the encounter that he and his friend Mike had while map dowsing Seattle. This is the type of book that I put next to Andy Goldsworthy's books on the table and watch my guests ooh and ah. Buy it now and prepare yourself for a new way of looking at the world.

Book Description
The profound influence of ancient cosmologies on our ideas about the human spirit
• Shows how ancient myths contain a sophisticated understanding of our relationship to the cosmos, derived from thousands of years of observation of the night sky
• Explains how ideas of the mind and spirit are still entwined with these ancient cosmologies despite the disruptive effects of modern astronomy
• Reveals how ancient ideas and contemporary cosmology might be combined into a new model for spiritual meaning
Thousands of years before the first written records, humans were turning to the night sky as a source of meaning for existence and their place within it. The conclusions drawn from these observations are embodied in stories from across the world known as Creation Myths. Contrary to the popular belief that these myths were meant to explain the origins of the universe, Pete Stewart shows that they were actually designed to create a harmony and order in the lives of humans that reflected, in their social and built environments, the ordered patterns they saw evidenced in the sky.
These ancient myths also record, in the story of “the separation of Heaven and Earth,” the discovery of a disastrous discord in this ancient harmony, which the mythmakers overcame by imagining a vastly expanded architecture, one in which the individual soul had a role to play in the evolution of the cosmos.
Today science presents a similar challenge to our sense of meaning. Stewart explores how, by reexamining the myths of creation in this light, we can learn how contemporary cosmology might yield a new architecture for the spirit and how the ancient sense of being in the cosmos might be reconstructed for our age.

Like it or not (and many science fiction purists and ufologists don't), flying saucers and science fiction are inextricably linked; over the years, this likely combination has been the basis for some of the greatest stories, toys, comics, art, and movies ever produced. In this book, the father-and-son Nesheim team recaptures it all, presenting famous saucer (and alien) images from nearly every medium. The result is a wonderful coffee-table book certain to delight most anyone, whether true believers, laughing skeptics, or just those who think the old covers of Amazing Stories and Fate look neat.
Customer Reviews:
Pure, colorful, pop culture, fun- a blast from the past!.......2006-01-28
First of all this book is not a serious examination of the topic of extraterrestrial visitors. What it is, is pure fun and a delight to read. The authors have done a remarkable job collecting images from pop culture (mostly from the 50's and 60's) dealing with the "flying saucer craze." You have covers from the science fiction pulps, from magazines such as Fate and Mystic, paperback covers, comic books, trading cards, toys, model kits, movie posters, records, lunch boxes- just about any artifact dealing with flying saucers and aliens. Every page is covered with multiple bright, beautiful images.
To be fair the text does also cover the origins of the phenomenon, as well as the early publicised sightings and personalities (Kenneth Arnold, Ray Palmer, Donald Kehoe, George Adamski, Buck Nelson, Bryant and Helen Reeve, etc.) And there are helpful, well-written, and informative descriptions of all the illustrations.
I was personally amazed at how much of this stuff that I owned and remembered. It brought back a lot of memories.
GREAT IMAGES FROM THE PAST.......2005-03-31
This is a fun, eye-popping look at flying saucer art through the decades. Comic books, magazines and paperbacks all jumped on the flying saucer bandwagon, both reflecting and reinforcing the public's interest. Even 50's movies like "Invasion of the Saucer Men" are covered in this book. There were a wealth of saucer-related toys, and they're discussed here, with copious photographs. Moreover, the text is light-hearted yet informative. You won't go wrong getting this one.
Enjoyable images from the golden age of sci-fi.......2002-07-09
This book puts forth a variety of pop culture artifacts dealing with sci-fi's golden age in the 1950's. From pulp magazines to toys, the authors compile an enjoyable collection of items. For those interested in '50's sci-fi, this is a good read.
Pop Culture Imagery.......2001-08-25
A collection of pictures mostly from the 50's pulp magazines and movie posters. Good nostalgic fun from an era (so described on the book's back cover) "when America was simultaneously more innocent and more paranoid!". My only complaint- it left me hungering for more!
