Jan Tschichold's design breakthroughs in typography were two fold. He was the first typographer to apply the aesthetics, in his day, of the Bauhaus to ordinary, day-to-day printing. Secondly, his great flexibility of vision allowed him to relinquish those design principles of asymmetry and articulate a wider vision after his exile from Nazi Germany. The Bauhaus had a tendency, after all, to use type as an element of abstract art, and Tschichold would never be swayed from his conviction that typographical design must serve communication. He would incorporate the dash and elegance of Bauhaus form, but never sacrifice legibility for flair. Function, in his case, would always follow form. His aesthetic, however, was indelible. With his early training in lettering and calligraphy, Tschichold "... became the first to offer a coherent philosophy of design by which all typographic problems ... could be tackled in ways that were rational, suited to modern production techniques, and aesthetically satisfying."

Jan Tschichold: A Life in Typography offers both the design student and the experienced designer such enlightened summaries, placing the typographer's vision firmly in the rich cultural context of his times. In his concise biography Ruari McLean, the world's leading Tschichold scholar, offers an interpretation of the significant design innovations, with analyses of Tschichold's writings, theories and manifestos. A substantial as well as a handsome volume, enriched with annotated illustrations of Tschichold's work, and including the now famous series of film posters for Munich's Phoebus-Palast Cinema, Jan Tschichold is as satisfying to the eye as any of Tschichold's clean, lean designs.

Book Description

German type and book designer Jan Tschichold (1902Ð1974) revolutionized modern typography through his bold, asymmetrical designs and use of sanserif typography, both inspired by the work of the Bauhaus. He proclaimed his new design philosophy through a series of articles and books, including Die neue Typographie, published in Berlin in 1928. His international renown came largely as a result of his redesign of Penguin's entire series of paperback novels just after World War II. Any graphic designer practicing today owes a debt to Tschichold's innovation.?

?Jan Tschichold: A Life in Typography offers a concise biography of Tschichold, accompanied by numerous examples of his vast body of work. It serves as an introduction to Tschichold for those who are unfamiliar with his influential style, yet for the experienced designer it is an excellent collection of the wide range of his designs. ?Ruari McLean's books on graphic design include Modern Book Design (1958) and Typographers on Type (1995). He is also the translator of Tschichold's The New Typography and the author of various books on Tschichold's work.

4 out of 5 stars Two typographic icons.......2006-08-18

The late Ruary McLean has deligted the world of typography with many seminal books on the subject. "Jan Tschichold: a life in typography" is but one good example of his prodigious output. McLean uses his personal acquaintance with Tschichold to good effect in a delightful essay about this important 20th century type designer. The essay evaluates the work of this controversial figure who started as a convential designer, espoused a radical change, and then reverted to a more classical view of typography. The book contains many examples of Tschichold's work from all three stages of his development. An excellent reference.

4 out of 5 stars It's great....but..........2000-10-05

First the good. "Life in Typography" is a beautifully illustrated paperback containing gorgeous, intriguing scans of pages and illustrations from the work of typographer/illustrator Jan Tschichold. Fortunately, a number of reprints in the book are reprinted actual size, to give the viewer a distinctly real vantage point into what the originals actually looked like. So unless you've got the cash to buy out-of-print books, this is by far the most sane route. And it's not too expensive either.

But the only problem I had with the book is that I wanted to learn more about the artist himself. Tschichold's bold, at times abbrasive tone comes out in his pen sketched notes on a number of reprints and in-house drafts, leading the reader to believe he was probably one obnoxious, colorful, temperamental character. Instead, "A Life in Typography" sheds little light on the 'life' of Tschichold, and focuses instead on images with little explanation.

Were there no interviews with Tschichold that could have been reprinted? A larger window into his persona would have really helped understand his persistance and drive for typographic perfection.

But of everything reprinted in the book, quite possibly the most stirring, worthy part is a four page reprint of "Composition Rules" written by Tschichold and distributed to employees of the Penguin Book company. It's forceful, blunt, and essential reading for anyone involved in typesetting. He explains in detail how to treat capitals, italics, paragraph indents and punctuation marks. His thoughts and opinions about typography leap off the page.

So if you need a quick reference of his work, or are someone who just discovered the name Tschichold, this is a must have for your design library.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-03-12

This is a great step-by-step 'how-to' book. The explanations and pictures are very detailed. I feel like I am prepared and know everything I need to know to get started making glass beads!

5 out of 5 stars All the instructions you'll ever need for a great prize.......2007-02-04

I've been making glass beads for 3 years now, and recently showed a friend how to make glass beads. He picked it up right away, and next time I saw him he was definetly not an amateur anymore. I wanted to find a book that gave more then just beginners instructions, and showed many techniques in a clear and simple way. After having looked at many (much more expensive) books I found this one. It had it all! Helpfull hints (hot tips)and exciting techniques for years of fun to come, as well as simple, easy to understand instructions. After giving the book to my friend, I bought it for myself.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book on bead making.......2006-08-09

The book gave us confidence that we could make glass beads. Production has not started but soon will.

Service was excellent as usual.

5 out of 5 stars The Nature of Glass Beads.......2006-07-03

This is one of two books that you should own if you are serious about learning to make glass beads. The step by steps are easy to follow. The hot tip boxes are a nice way to point out important info. The pictures are clear and to the point, and follow the descriptions of the action. The gallery pictures are spread thoughtout each section of the type of bead work being explained.

A touch that I liked was when a new word is introduced it is in bold print and a clear description of what it is. Giving notice that this is something to be filed for furture use.
They have included a whole load of other artists work for a wide idea of what can be done. the appendix's on the nature of glass and trouble shooting will save a lot of time for the newbe. Also the jewelry basics is a nice touch for the right of the street person. I own it and use it.

The other book you should own is the Kimberley Adams The complete book of glass bead making

Product Description

Beadmaker and author Corina Tettinger says she wanted Passing the Flame to bring the teacher into your house. Tettingers chatty writing style gives the reader that teacher effect, making the book very user-friendly. The instructions are easy to understand, and colorful photos throughout the book provide a visual feast. Photos show every step of the beadmaking process in detail, including incorporating it into jewelry. The format of the book makes it easy to keep open on the workbench while following along and exploring techniques. In her foreword, Tettinger asks Are you going to learn everything there is to know about beadmaking in this book? She answers, Hell no. Tettingers designs are based on techniques that have been used for centuries mainly dots and lines. Its her precision, color choices, and particular combinations of these techniques that make her work unique. Because her techniques are both basic and innovative, a beginning beadmaker will get a good foundation with Tettingers book, and one with more experience will find plenty of new ideas and inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars PASSING THE FLAME - LEARN HOW TO MAKE GLASS BEADS.......2007-03-25

A fantastic book. The first pages show Corina's progression as an artist.
From her beginner beads, to her now advanced beads. Lots of color photos.
Shows how to make a round bead. How to make a floral, an encased frog bead,
and more.

An easy to read book with step by step instructions. Talking about color combinations in glass, dot work, stringer control and how to pull your own stringer. Corina is a master artist and this book shares her knowledge with everyone. A great how to book that will make even the most complicated bead designs seem attainable.

I really loved reading this book, it's a great resource for lampwork artists. Funny, with lots of helpful hints and beautiful inspiring
photos of Corina's lampwork beads.

1 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE.......2006-08-18

I too wish I had read past the first reviewer. Must have been a born optimist!! The best thing about this book, THE PRICE. What a total waste of my time. I learned stringing beads as a toddler! I was looking for a GLASS BEAD BOOK and how to MAKE THEM. Why not put this book with the stringers! Shame on you Amazon for leading us down the wrong path. No wonder this book did not have pictures of the inside. shame shame shame!

2 out of 5 stars Very Misleading Title.......2006-05-01

I should have read the other reviews first. If you are looking for a book to outline and explain the technique of glass bead making, THIS IS NOT THE BOOK!!!! Only buy this if you want some pictures of beads or are interested in making jewerely.

2 out of 5 stars Misleading Title!.......2006-04-23

While I do believe that this book has merit, it is as a JEWELRY MAKING BOOK, not as a bead making book. I feel that the Title of the book is misleading.....to me, a "Bead Artist" is a person who MAKES beads, not a person who makes jewelry with beads. That is a "JEWELRY ARTIST". A small point, but significant, since this book is listed under "Lampwork". Nice photographs, and as I said, the book has merit if you are looking for some VERY SIMPLE stringing ideas.

5 out of 5 stars The Art & Soul of Glass Beads.......2006-04-05

As a glass artist I am inspired by all that other glass artists accomplish, and this book offered a lot of inspiration. Lovely stuff!

3 out of 5 stars A book about stringing, NOT about making beads.......2004-09-17

Some of the other reviews and the editorial info fail to make it clear that this book shows you exactly how to string some (not very inspiring) necklaces with lampwork beads, but it is NOT a book about making lampwork beads. There are exhaustive (and to me anyway, pretty tedious) biographies of a lot of artists, but there is so little about their actual techniques that I was only frustrated. It's not very informative to say, you can make anything out of Moretti glass! Well, sure, but how? So, if you would like to know the stories of some bead artists, and if you want to know exactly how to construct a few necklaces, you will like this book. For me... well, I would have given it 1 star, except that it's hard to blame the book for being not what I expected. I would have preferred to see the artists discuss their techniques in a lot more detail.

    Book Description

The various worldwide uses of glass beads, from antiquity to the modern time, are presented in this new book, along with the fascinating evolution of the beadmaking industry. From roots in Asian and African glassmaking, the European beadmaking industry is shown to have developed in response to political and economic factors of international trade and keen businessmen who saw potential profits, 475 color photographs, illustrate the different styles uses, and patterns of glass beads that originated from or influenced the European industry. Phoenician, Celtic, Viking, Venetian, African, Bavarian, Bohemian, Dutch, French, and Russian styles that were made for symbolic, fashion, magic, and controversial uses are shown. Even today's foiled, flower, mosaic, pearl, bronze, and fancy beads are discussed and shown. As beads play an important role in ornamentation today, this book will be of interest to a wide circle of creative people. The price guide reveals the current collector's market for popular bead types.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive and informative.......1999-06-20

I really devoured this book. The photographs show all the important types of older European beads beautifully, and the text was well researched and written.

I was pleasantly surprised by maps explaining the whereabouts of the beadmakers, having lived in Germany.

This book was written from a highly refined and educated passion.

    3 out of 5 stars A well-meant, but flawed attempt........1998-02-09

Ms. Jargstorf's 3rd book on bead research is her most ambitious, and most provocative. She is on the most solid ground when discussing the beads of Germany and Central Europe. Her discussion of ancient beads is problematical, as very few of these are pictured to relate to the text. She offers a great many ideas and theories, but presents very little substantiation. Some of her ideas are just silly, or misinterpretations of history. The photographs are variable in quality and reproduction, are not numbered, and often do not enhance the text. The "Value Guide" is given in British Pounds Sterling, and is therefore not very useful. The most interesting beads are merely said to be "rare"--and no value given. As such, this section is almost pointless. I recommend this book, but only if the reader remembers that it has serious flaws, and is spurred to do some cross-referencing to other sources of information.

    5 out of 5 stars Beads,Beads, and more Beads.......2006-07-03

Lark books has done it again with a very well written and photograped book on a cross section of media to make beads with. I will admit that I am already a big fan of Adams and Gollberg's work.

Having no interest at this time in felt or paper work. The sections were interesting reading in passing. The clay section has some nice touches. All things covered in this book are for the beginner or somebody that wants to get a handle on the hobby of beads/jewelry.
Yes in the glass beads there is torch work but how many homes today don't have a maap torch for plumbing. Same thing with the metal work Joanna gives it in two sections. The cold working and the hot working. So you can start out with a small investment or none if you have a handy type house.
The pictures are clear bright and show the area that the description tags cover, not work bench scenic shots.

The gallery's have an assortment of other peoples work for wider scope of styles than just the featured artists. I own it and use it

This is a wonderful book for "how to's" on various methods of making beads including polymer clay, fiber, metal and glass. For any beadmaker or aspiring beadmaker, this book will provide inspiration and instructions for making beads. It gives a great overview of the various methods to wet your appetite! A must have book.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for the beginner or experienced........2002-11-13

I found this to be a great book. The photos were beautiful and the instructions were detailed. I enjoyed the section on polymer clay. The book has chapters on making beads of out felt, paper, metal, glass, & polymer clay. If you enjoy making beads or thinking of starting beadmaking, this book is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Inspirational Bead Projects!.......2002-11-13

I love this book. This is a great book for the bead artist. The variety of projects and materials is great and many of the techniques for one medium can be translated to other mediums. The polymer clay section is especially good. Not the only book to own on making beads, but definitely full of excellent inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of different stuff!.......2002-11-13

I don't know if the previous reviewer is looking at the same book I am, but my copy of "Making Beautiful Beads" has a lot more than torches and glass in it. About a quarter of the book covers how to make glass beads with a torch. Another quarter gives you an intro to metal-smithing. Another covers polymer clay. The remaining section has some very unusual felted beads and cast paper beads.

This books covers a lot of ground, so if you are already experienced in several of these disciplines, then you may not need it. On the other hand, if you're curious about what it takes to get into torching your own glass beads or how to get started making beads with polymer clay, this is a great reference.

Each section gives you a good feel for what you'll need in the way of supplies and how to start with each medium. Lots of step-by-step photos and clear instructions.

The book is worth the price for the gallery sections, alone. I don't much care for fiber jewelry as a rule, but some of these hand-felted ornaments are beautiful! The polymer clay, glass and metal galleries are even more inspiring - gorgeous work from a variety of artists and crafters.

As a relatively new "beader", this book ranks among my favorite. Clear text and excellent photography provide clear guidance for numerous projects.

      Book Description

Anglo-Saxon beads are a vital source of information for post-Roman and early Anglo-Saxon periods in Britain, and this book presents the first ever national survey devoted to them. At its core is a classification of the forms, colours and decorative features of all the glass beads that have been recovered through excavation, supplemented by schedules listing both published and unpublished examples with references to their publication and to the museums where they can be studied. The work also includes two essays by Martin Welch, placing the study of glass beads in its historical and archaeological context in early Anglo-Saxon England and suggesting areas where future research should be concentrated. MARGARET GUIDO pioneered the study of glass beads in this country; the material she gathered together has been drawn together and edited by MARTIN WELCH, Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London.
