Defamation Via Satellite a European Perspective
David Fisher Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9041105360 |
Book Description
Satellites enable European broadcasters to televise programs to vast transnational audiences. This activity is supported by a regime of freedom of transborder broadcasting under EC law, European human rights law and other areas of public international law. The program contents of broadcasts will on occasion give rise to claims of injury to private law interests, including the interest in reputation. The defamation laws of Europe's nations are however by no means uniform: the same transmission may give rise to liability under one national system but to no liability under another. The material outcome of a given claim will thus rest on the existing regime of private international law applied by Europe's national courts, including rules governing forum, choice of law and foreign judgments. It is against the above background of private international law that Defamation via Satellite examines Europe's prospects of realizing the public international law regime of free transborder broadcasting.

Privacy in Telecommunications European and an American Approach
Blanca Ruiz Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9041102744 |
Book Description
Privacy and the secrecy of telecommunications are widespread concerns of individuals. Controlling telecommunications in order to prevent and fight crime is a pervasive concern of governments. The United States, Germany, and the ECHR have employed fundamentally different methods to approach this apparent dilemma. Using discourse theory as a theoretical framework, the author scrutinises these three systems and the effectiveness of the solutions they have employed. She proposes patterns of reasoning which outline the role that the secrecy of telecommunications plays in constitutional democracies and which help to overcome the strains that new technologies inflict on both the need to protect privacy and on the necessity to control telecommunications.

Satellite Regulation in Europe:Legal Texts and Materials
Stephan Goueff Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9041113460 |
Book Description
Commercial satellite activities have undergone enormous growth in the last decades, and so has the complexity of the legal framework within which these activities have to be carried out. Because of the international character of satellite activities, this legal framework has often been established on an international or regional level, through institutions such as the European Union, the International Telecommunications Union, the World Trade Organisation and the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations. It is not an easy task to obtain a complete picture of this legal framework. For this reason, it was considered opportune to assemble all relevant legal texts and materials established by these institutions into one book. As telecommunications is currently the most important commercial application of satellites, it should come as no surprise to anyone that the main part of the book is dedicated to this application, simply because of the fact that the legal framework is furthest developed. However, relevant texts and materials for the three other commercial satellite activities -- broadcasting, remote sensing and navigation -- have also been included. This book is a very valuable tool for all those involved in the European satellite business or for those who want to get involved in it, whether they are lawyers or non-lawyers; everyone is affected by the laws and regulations governing this field and everyone should be aware of the limitations these laws and regulations might impose.

Telecommunications for Europe 1995, Volume 3 in The CEC Sources (The Cec Sources , Vol 3)
Manufacturer: Ios Pr Inc ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9051992289 |
Book Description
The European Union's telecommunications policy is making substantial and rapid progress in removing monopolies and establishing a solid Europe-wide regulatory framework which protects both competition and consumers, and promotes pan-European services and networks. The development of high performance information and communication systems is rapidly re-shaping the foundations of our economies, of society, of the workplace, of our daily lives. Europe is inevitably caught up in this information revolution. It is a revolution driven by two forces. The first is digitalisation which is fostering an extraordinary wave of technological innovation and breaking down historical boundaries between telecommunications, computing and broadcasting; the second is globalisation: globalisation not only of products and markets, but above all of information and knowledge. These two forces interact, each fuelling each other. This third volume records the activities of the years 1991 to 1994, and contains some of the key decisions which will shape the telecommunications landscape in Europe for years to come.'...But for those who know a little of the background, and can interpret 'Brussels speak', the book is a treasure trove. Seeing all the CEC documents together is illuminating...' Voice+, volume 3, no. 1, January/Februari 1996, p. 10

Telecommunications Law in Europe
Manufacturer: Kluwer Law International ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 9041100288 |
Book Description
Telecommunications laws provide the tools for the privatisation of state-owned telecommunications enterprises, for the liberalisation of the provision of telecommunications networks, services and terminal equipment, for the increasing pan-European harmonisation of the regulatory framework, and for the merging of telecommunication and media applications, leading to `multimedia' services. The steady and relentless changes in telecommunications laws in the European Union, together with the dramatic developments in Central and Eastern Europe, have necessitated the publication of a third, enlarged edition of Telecommunications Law in Europe. The book contains contributions from the European Telecommunications Law Practice Group of Baker & McKenzie. Together, they analyze the national telecommunications laws of Belgium, the Czech Republic, Egypt, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, the Russian Federation, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom, using the emerging EU telecommunications law as a frame of reference.

Weeds of Canada and..........2002-07-26
This is definitely a book written for crop farmers, since there is more information on how much it depreciates crop yield ("Reasons for Concern"), than how to get rid of the weed for gardeners. However, I think that once you can identify a weed, it is very simple to find info (chemical, organic etc) on how to deal with it.
One feature that I find excellent is "Similar Species", which includes a photo.I find that this helps remove doubt in identification, or gives a hint where to look if one is mistaken.
Seeing as how I am trying to identify weeds in order to find edible ones rather than eradicate them, I would have appreciated an "edible/poisonous/inedible" designation for each plant. However once I have identified it, I can then refer to a more detailed book such as "Edible Wild Plants: A North American Field Guide: by Elias & Dykeman" to see if the plant is edible and how to prepare it.
The main reason I am giving this book 4 stars vs 5 is that it seems to be lacking some fairly common weeds. I cannot find deadly (climbing) nightshade in it, which grows here in Montreal alleyways. Nor could I find goldenrod (Solidago L.). I really don't understand how such common weeds could be left out.
Basically an easy to use reference guide that is handy to flip through and consult while out in the field.

Macrophytes in Aquatic Ecosystems: From Biology to Management: Proceedings of the 11th International Symposium on Aquatic Weeds, European Weed Research Society (Developments in Hydrobiology)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402053894 |
Book Description
Macrophytes and macrophytes ecology have gained an added importance with the introduction of, and legal requirement to implement, the European Water Framework Directive. This reflects the valuable role that aquatic plant communities play in assessing the ecological status of water bodies. Significant changes in the status and general abundance of these communities has been recorded in the last three decades, consequent on such factors as global warming and, increasingly, on the spread of aggressive alien species. These changes have been most felt in those waters that are exploited for amenity and recreational pursuits.
The increased biomass of aquatic vegetation in water bodies has adversely impacted on leisure use of these systems but has also impacted on their use for agricultural, flood relief, municipal and domestic purposes. The loss to national economies resulting from this excessive plant biomass has been appreciable and has put pressure on water managers to develop weed control procedures that are efficient, environmentally sensitive and cost-effective. The results from the most up-to-date research activities and field trials of leading aquatic plant scientists and managers in all five continents, aimed at resolving these weed problems, has been drawn together in this volume.
The title of this special issue, 'Macrophytes in aquatic ecosystems: from biology to management', is wide-ranging and reflects the broad scope and scale of the papers presented therein. It further recognises the old paradigm: 'knowledge to achieve management and management to achieve knowledge'.

Management and Ecology of Freshwater Plants (Developments in Hydrobiology)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0792344332 |
Book Description
There is a growing need for appropriate management of aquatic plants in rivers and canals, lakes and reservoirs, and drainage channels and urban waterways. This management must be based on a sound knowledge of the ecology of freshwater plants, their distribution and the different forms of control available including chemical, physical, biological and biomanipulation. This series of papers from over 20 different countries was generated from the highly successful European Weed Research Society symposia on aquatic plant management, this being the ninth. The contributions provide a valuable insight into the complexities involved in managing aquatic systems, discuss state-of-the-art control techniques such as biomanipulation using fish and waterfowl and the use of straw, and deal with patterns of regrowth and recovery post-management. Careful consideration is given to the use of chemicals, a practice which has come under scrutiny in recent years.

An Ecological and Societal Approach to Biological Control (Progress in Biological Control)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402043201 |
Book Description
Biological control is among the most promising methods for control of pests (including vectors), diseases and weeds. In this book ecological and societal aspects are for the first time treated together. In an ecological approach the aim is to evaluate the significance of certain biological properties like biodiversity and natural habitats. Also, it is important to see biological control from an organic (or ecological) farming point of view. In a societal approach terms like ‘consumer’s attitude’, ‘risk perception’, ‘learning and education’ and ‘value triangle’ are recognised as significant for biological production and human welfare.
