Great BOOK !!!.......2007-04-29
If you want to know more about architecture in the Caribbean, you have to read this book!
Caribbean Elegance.......2007-04-11
Through his work at la Marina, Casa de Campo, Gian Franco Fini captures the essence of refined architecture with a perfect air of Caribbean elegance.
A place to visit before you dies........2007-04-10
This is a book about one of those magical places that once you get there you don't want to leave. It's in the path of boats coming from Miami to the West Indies and is the place to see in the Caribbean before you die. Casa de Campo is the Caribbean most complete resort by far where any possible hobby in the world could practiced at world renowned conditions -besides skiing, except if you change it for water-sky-. The book about the Casa de Campo's Marina is definitely a 5 start in class, quality and content. This is the real thing in Caribbean Elegance and Luxury where you'll be able to find some of the most exclusive houses in the region.
The Best Keep Secret in the Caribbean unveils........2007-03-02
This is the only book available about Marinas from an architectural standpoint. Blueprints, sketches and more than 300 full-color pictures are a never ending source for one of the most luxurious approach to Caribbean Architecture. It's about the renowned Marina at Casa de Campo, La Romana, Dominican Republic and is a must for anyone willing see from the inside out as many options as possible to recreate a tropical paradise despite if it's and apartment or a houses under 2,000 sqf or a masterpiece above 20,000 sqf.
In contrast with W.R. Blain's book for "Marina Developments" -That is an excellent and maybe the only book about Marinas from a structural standpoint- this one is an architectural approach to Marinas and all the elements around it such as Yacht Club, Apartments, Houses, Restaurants and all related services. It's full of details and references in a text that is catchy and easy to read. My only concern was that I thought it was pricy in the first place despite that it was printed and bounded in Italy, but Blain's book is above the $250 and this one is more related to interior design and architecture so it's worth 5 out 5 starts.

capturing the essence ...........2000-12-16
I bought this book in Havana whilst on a brief visit just recently.
Having visited some of the places in the book, such as the wonderful building used as the cover shot; stayed in a hotel on The Malecon; stayed in one of the private grand old homes in Vedado; stayed for a few days in Trinidad; Cienfuegos; Valle de los Ingenios - can truly say that this book, by its wonderful photography, has captured the true essence of what is Cuba today - a beautiful island caught in a past era distinguished by its architecture, granduer of vision and the human senses of style and vibrant sense of life - all in glorious decay today but still captiviting and enthralling. It is heartening that some of the buildings are being restored to their former grandeur and will be there for following generations to see and enjoy.
The country is rendered even more attractive by its people, who everyday cope with trying to live without the basics that the rest of the world takes for granted and, still maintain a great sense of life, optimism, gentleness of spirit and pride in their beautiful country.

Book Description
In 1992 Smithsonian anthropologist Michael Atwood Mason traveled to Cuba for initiation as a priest into the Santería religion. Since then he has created an active oricha "house" and has initiated five others as priests. He is a rare combination: a scholar-practitioner who is equally fluent in his profession and his religion. Interweaving his roles as researcher and priest, he explores Santería as a contemporary phenomenon and offers an understanding of its complexity through his own experiences and those of its many practitioners. The rituals of Santería focus on the establishment, maintenance, and transformation of the practitioners' identities--how they create their "moral universe" and use it to change their lives. Mason examines several of the most significant ritual performances to illustrate the practitioners' intense personal relationships with the gods, or orichas, and how both humans and orichas act and are acted upon. Through his own experience Mason illuminates how the religion changes people socially and psychologically as they deepen these relationships. Balancing deftly between a devotee's account of participation and an anthropologist's theoretical analysis, Living Santería offers an original and insightful understanding of this growing religious tradition.

Experience without language.......2005-06-09
LIVING SANTERIA
This book full of information about rituals, supported by a strong bibliography and notes.
On the other hand, I was left wondering about the extent of the writer's ability to understand his experience, and about the care demonstrated in the publishing process.
Mason claims to have been initiated in Cuba; yet he does not know seem to know the difference between the verbs "to help" and ''to greet''; and between the article "the'' and the pronoun ''he" in Spanish (see translation, p. 54) . One wonders how accurate his information can be, when the basic language is not known.
As for the publisher--the Smithsonian. One imagines that in the process between manuscript review, and printing someone with real knowledge of Spanish would have been asked to review the translations and make the proper corrections.
Very Honest.......2004-04-25
This Mr Mason has been there and is very good a explaining the "real" deal. I buy all the books on the Religon that I think would help me and pass to my Godchildren. I felt I was back in Cuba. His book will save to alot of explaining. Buy the book, it is well worth it. Many are not.

Bit tedious, Better written elsewhere........2003-04-04
I can not really recommend this book. It is not a bad book, a bit thin, and a bit pricy. It has a few small highlights, But most of the time I found myself flipping through the pages. And in a book with such little pages, it stinks to have to flip.
Section 1 is about an individual named Maria going through divination. I just could not get into it, and I skipped paragraph after paragraph trying to get the gist of it, and just could not.
Most of what Mr. Mason has written about has been written better elsewhere. For example The Altar of my Soul by Marta Moreno Vega, and Cuban Santeria by Baba Raul Canizares.
<-- Ibae!! I found the book to be a bit tedious, in the writing style. There was a story where an Elder Priestess is having an argument with an Italero over a derecho owed to her. You read how this individual uses the religion only as a way of financial growth, and to boost her Ego, instead of her true love and respect for the religion. Although this is true in many instances, I can not find the reason that led the author to write about it.
To be honest half the book is Glossary, and Notes. This is good for the people who have little knowledge of Orishas worship, but a bit of a waist of space and money for the Orisha community who has all this information imbedded into their being.
If you are beginning in Lukumi, or looking for research into the religion then you might like this book. If you are already established into the religion, skip this book you will not be missing much.
Interesting.......2003-01-17
This book needs more practical information. The author is a first rate scholar and if scholarship is what you desire this is the book for you. But if you need plain easy to read info in great amounts, read another book.
Experience Santeria.......2002-10-07
In "Living Santería: Rituals and Experiences in an Afro-Cuban Religion," Michael Mason takes the reader on a fascinating journey through his own exploration of Santería, beginning as an observer, then becoming initiated into the priesthood of Santería, and finally initiating others into the priesthood. Mason's main argument is that Santería, like any religious practice, is performative, and is thus best understood by incorporating some of this performativity into his written analysis. Using each chapter to focus on a key ceremony within Santería (including a client's divination session; an acquaintance's reception of the guerreros, or warrior deities; and a neophyte's initiation into the priesthood of Santería), Mason emphasizes the body as an important site for ritual learning and individual transformation through the practice of Santería.
Mason is steeped in the philosophical writings of hermeneutical phenomenology, and is able to apply the ideas of Mauss, Bourdieu, Marcus, and Jackson to the praxis of Santería in informative and useful ways. Although many books have been written about Santería, most have been written by practitioners who are not scholars, and none has been able to make this analytical connection so successfully. Mason, a folklorist and curator, also highlights the importance of material culture. Certain rituals of Santería have been adumbrated in some detail by previous authors (J. Mason, L. Cabrera), but none has presented as thorough and compelling a picture of the asiento as Mason. And most important, Mason is himself a priest and practitioner of Santería, with more than ten years "in the religion." This makes his perspective invaluable, and provides the strongest component in this tripartite approach to understanding Santería. Because of his first-hand knowledge of this religious tradition and his first-rate academic and practical training, Mason is able to synthesize his socioreligious experiences in a way that few others can.
Mason represents a rare combination: a scholar-practitioner who is as respected in his profession as he is in his religion. I would compare Mason's work favorably to Karen Brown's Mama Lola: A Vodou Priestess in Brooklyn (1991). Mason's work is greatly influenced by theorist Michael Jackson, and can also be favorably compared to some of Jackson's essays on the nature of ethnographic inquiry. Certainly, Mason has been influenced by the great Cuban ethnographers Lydia Cabrera and Fernando Ortíz in the scope and detail of his writing, but neither Cabrera nor Ortíz focused their efforts on sociological analysis. Mason's work picks up where Cabrera, Ortíz, and others left off, connecting the litany of ritual detail with intricate webs of meaning, theorizing about the subjectivity of individual experience.
The book will be of considerable interest to scholars and others who are interested in the practice and process of Santería. Folklorists, anthropologists, religious practitioners, performance theorists, scholars of religion, scholars of the Caribbean, and serious students of ethnography will be gratified by the style and substance Mason brings to his subject. General readers who are interested in Santería and other Caribbean religious practices will also be drawn to the book's accessible and engaging approach to the experience of Santería. In short, buy this book!

Book Description
Twelve classic design motifs make composition simple Six variations on a design theme for each motif, plus ten artist examples in styles from realistic to abstract Great for beginners, illuminating for pros
Composition is one of the great puzzles of watercolor painting. Watercolor by Design solves that puzzle! Author Marianne Brown shows artists how to create innovative paintings using twelve classic design motifs, grouped by type: cruciform, horizontal bar, and vertical bar; checkerboard, asymmetric, and staggered grids; radial, cantilever, and pyramid; and frame in frame, allover pattern, and floating shapes. The properties and impact of each motif are explained, then reinforced with six variations on a design theme for each motif, followed by at least ten creative examples by different artists working in different styles from realism to abstract to illustrate the possibilities. Packed with ideas and information, Watercolor by Design lets both new and experienced artists make composition work for them.

This book is written with intelligence, artistic experience and talent. I learned a great deal from the author. It's a must have for every artist, from beginner to advanced.

Explore Experimental Mixed Media and Collage Painting.......2001-11-29
I've been a realist painter all of my life yet I've always enjoyed experimental and non-realist paintings. I'd even made several attempts to make my own experimental paintings yet ended up throwing them away in disgust since they showed that I didn't really know what I was doing. I was at a loss and wondering how people make abstract and experimental paintings at all.
Then I found this book and what a big difference it has made. The paintings in it are beautiful and made me want to try experimental painting again. I was SO thankful Ms. Dews breaks down her approach step-by-step with photos for each stage. So, for example, you read something like, "In this section I demonstrate some of the techniques I use in my paintings. They are simple to follow. As you practice these techniques, you will not only learn about the various techniques, you learn about the color, paper and how to use various tools." That chapter then procedes to do exactly that. Photos and explanations abound of techniques for texturing, shaping, coloring, various paper surfaces, etc and how each contributes to particular effect.
I appreciated especially the chapter on how to cultivate new ideas for your next painting. I also enjoyed the chapter finishing up by showing step-by-step how two artists can interpret the same subject. A photo of an iris was used for the demonstrations and Ms. Dews' result was an abstracted background with a more realist flower as the focal point. The other guest artist had a completely experimental, abstracted painting. I would've never known the original subject was a flower had I not been able to follow her painting from start to finish.
Two other chapters that really helped me a lot were the ones on viewing, cropping and collage. Ms. Dews is not afraid to crop her paintings if one area is working well but the rest of the painting is not. Alternately, sometimes she uses collage to rescue an area or painting that isn't working out. I wish I'd known about this on my first attempts. Had I thought to do these things I may have not thrown my paintings away, just cropped or collaged the disappointing sections.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone curious about trying a more experimental approach to painting. It has tons of mini-demonstrations, full painting demonstrations, discussions on using a wide variety of tools, surfaces, stencils, collage papers, mediums, etc. and techniques. It's got a lot of photos so you can see as well as read what the author is doing. Overall, it's a good reference to get started painting more freely.
This book breaks through creative blocks!.......1999-06-24
I ordered this book without seeing it. The customer reviews that summarize Dews' freedom and enjoyment of painting are true. She writes wonderfully and explains perfectly. When I received the book, I read all of it. She has more fun and coaxes her readers to jump up and run to the paint and, on the way, grab anything that doesn't move to add to the experience. A real fresh look at enjoying art.
A wonderful teaching guide for unique watercolor techniques!.......1999-01-02
We are so lucky that a talented artist like Pat Dews reveals her painting techniques to everyone. A beautifully put together book with great action photos and easy to follow directions. I especially love the painting for keemakoo. Highly recommend!!
This is a most helpful book........1998-11-11
Pat Dewsbook"Creative Discoveries in Watermedia" is the most informative and comprehensive book in my art library. Her "how to"examples are well defined which is a tremendous help to those who are new to the abstract genre and to many who need inspiration.
Exciting and Energizing makes you want to pick up a brush........1998-11-07
When I saw the cover I knew this would be a book I would love. This is a inspiring book, not a "copy me" book.

Not bad for beginners.......2006-09-20
This book will provide some interesting ideas for those looking to explore watercolor as a painting medium. Different techniques are illustrated such as drybrushing vs. wet-into-wet painting, opaque vs. translucent colors, creating textures and using salt, solvents, sponges and other tools to manipulate paint application. I definitely took some inspiration from this book to try different things when I was first learning watercolor as a medium, though as is noted in the book itself, some of these techniques should be used sparingly as they can look gimmicky in a painting if overused. Still, it is nice to have a book that shows one how to experiment with the medium and not be locked into certain schools of thought that insist on a very regimented approach to watercolor.
The biggest problem with this book is that there are not enough color illustrations to really appreciate what is being described by the artist. There are only 32 color plates in a book with more than 175 black & white images. This shortcoming makes the book visually less appealing and some of the technique explanations harder to fully appreciate.
Satisfactory.......2005-09-06
Quick response book was satisfactory but slightly outdated. Would have desired more color illustrations.

More of Carbonetti's gorgeous work--advice for creativity.......2001-11-21
This is not a painting how-to book. Making Pearls is Vermont artist Jeanne Carbonetti's attempt to verbalize her creative exercises she uses and teaches for her free style of watercolor.
If you are a fan of Carbonetti's paintings, there are many photos of her work in this book to drool and marvel over. There is one useful exercise--making a "creation cycle" using the seven colors based on the India Chakras. Her theory is that we are always within the cycle of creation and need to recognize where we are in the cycle to be in rhythm with the flow. If you can't take one of her workshops, using this book can lead you through the exercise.
Why "Making Pearls" as a title? This is a metaphor for taking irritations of daily life and making something beautiful from them, just as the oyster takes a grain of sand and creates a pearl.

This book inspires my creativity while teaching solid technique and the basics of good painting and design. I even like the ring binding format of the book that allows it to lay open flat while I experiment and work with the lessons. I highly recommend this for anyone who wants to improve their understanding and skill using watercolors and painting in general.

Each chapter highlights demonstrations and inspirations that will enable readers to push past boundaries and explore new ideas, including exercises for loosening up, improvisational painting, combining mediums and more. Haven't done the exercises yet but have given it much thought after reviewing the book
Exciting Techniques and Generous Information.......2006-04-23
In this book, the author is generous with sharing her techniques, her favorite materials, and her heart. While I am not an avid fan of abstracts, the techniques applied in this book are adaptable to many styles. She gives great step by step photos and tells you every paint/paper used. I found that it was easy to substitute most from my existing palette and artist supply shelf. The narrative is very personal, making a good read amongst the art. Many of her beautiful and dynamic paintings are featured. Ms. Stroud is a contributor to Watercolor Magazine and always presents fun, dynamic challenges for watercolor artists.

I just received the book and have not had time to review it, however upon opening the cover I discovered the original selling price of this book NEW is $27.99. The price I paid was $49.99 plus shipping from a used book seller. The book may be good but not worth $49.99. I feel I have been taken. Shame!

Betsy Dillard Stroud Has Raised the Bar (for all of us!) .......2005-03-21
Betsy Dillard Stroud is one of those rare hyphenates who can articulate her genius as well with a pen and paper as she does with a brush, easel and canvas. That's what makes all her work so extraordinary, and what makes "Painting From the Inside-Out" the rarest of the rare - a work in which every thought and image inspires, delights and enlightens. She has raised the bar for us all, and I am grateful.
