Customer Reviews:
Author attempts to "Christianize" something that has nothing to do with Christianity.......2007-06-12
I love the Star Wars movies. I admit that sometimes, as a Christian, I wonder if I should be watching them, or let my kids watch them. I understand why the author would want to try to make the Star Wars movies sound like they have a noble Christian purpose (in order to rationalize watching them). However, George Lucas himself has said that he modeled the Jedi characters after the Buddhist Sheolin monks of China. He has said that few people stop to open their minds to what they can accomplish through the "life force" that surrounds them, rather than just accepting the dogmatic ideas that get handed down to them. Does that sound like Christian thinking to you? Everything about the Star Wars movies is tempered with Eastern philosphy and religion and maybe even a tad of the paranormal. There's nothing Christian about that!
from Westminster John Knox Press.......2007-05-31
Star Wars is one of the most beloved movie series of all time, and in this book the author explores the many spiritual themes that weave throughout the six films. From the Force to the dark side, there is a moral and spiritual complexity to the films that, if paid attention to, can help us better understand our place in the world and our relation to others and to God. George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, did not intend for his films to be mere entertainment, the author argues. Rather, he hoped his films would be used as a vehicle for moral education.

This fully illustrated volume will captivate the interest of those pursuing a study of astronomy and of Bible students seeking reinforcing truths concerning the unity of creation and revelation.

Over my head.......2007-03-29
I'm a Christian and I believe God made me, the Earth and the Universe and all things are held together in His Hands. But I'm not very scientific and know very little about astronomy. So this book went right over my head and I never got passed the first chapter. But I did pass it on to my bil who knows more about it and finds it interesting. So, my rating is based on the fact that, as a novice, I couldn't get a handle on it. It didn't catch my interest. It is not based on whether Seiss is right or wrong or technically correct about his ideas.
Signs in the heavens.......2006-10-08
I disagree with the reviewers who quote the Berean Call where other "preachers" state that we are very God as in...(54. We are 'little gods' and even part of God with all the power of God; and we are 'little messiahs,' everything that Jesus ever was." (Hinn, The Berean Call, 1992 Media Spotlight Special Report, Feb 94).
The Word of God still speaks with authority about the signs in the heavens, and that has not changed.
I believe this is a thought-provoking book that should be compared with scripture for the complete picture.
words have meanings.......2001-11-25
Having read many books on this subject, including the book by D.James Kennedy, I consider this the best. It does in fact take into consideration the fact that the stars have moved since the ancient names were changed to the modern. Also the MIRRACLE IN STONE, BY SEISS, was in conjunction with his study of the Temple at Ein Gaihdi, which depects the ancient zodiac of about the time of the flood. The simple fact overlooked by Hunt is that in the ancient languages, the stars tell the gospel. And the original purpose of the materials he drew from were actually a study in lexiconography whose purpose was to prove the existence of an original language on earth,,,and only happened to lead to the larger realization that the mysteries were a corruption of the ancient zodiac, and not as is commonly believed, that christianity drew on mystery sources. This is a must read for the Christian.....
The most highly trusted and authoritative source...........2001-07-29
This book is certainly the most authoritative and trusted source on the subject of Biblical Astronomy. Having owned more than one copy of this text, as well as multiple copies of other manuscripts of this type(and having a background of Theological study), I can say without a doubt that this book is an absolute MUST HAVE for anyone interested in Biblical Astronomy.
The Gospel In The Stars.......2001-01-01
I agree with Dave Hunt, perhaps the Charles Spurgeon of our day, who wrote in his May, 1989 issue of The Berean Call about "The Gospel of the Stars" by Charles Seiss. Hunt wrote that books such as this set aside sound doctrine in favor of myths. "Seiss' book asserts that the signs of the zodiac were originally designed by God to communicate the 'gospel'; that this 'Gospel in the Stars' was known to those living before the flood; that it was later corrupted into asrology; and that the alleged recovery of the 'gospel interpretation' of the zodiac is a great witness to God and His Word." However, Hunt goes on to say that "not one shred of historical evidence can be offered in support of this theory. It is based not upon fact but speculation. Seiss even admits that the insights leading to his thesis came 'in connection with his studies of the marvelous wisdom embodied in the Great Pyramid at El Giza' (p5). The alleged 'Gospel in the Stars' is simply a "Christian' interpretation of astrology and occultism, in the same class as pyramidology--and equally dangerous." For more information on this book, and on E.W. Bullinger's "Witness of the Stars" one should request a reprint of Hunt's May, 1989 article from The Berean Call. Both Seiss and Bullinger are spreading mythology under the guise of Biblical Christianity. James Beeson

Not as professional as I expected.......2005-01-06
Finally a comprehensive book about the great Motoen artists from the "Golden Age." The A-Z format made it very easy to read, but the technical structure of the book seemed unprofessional and very computer generated. Sometimes graphics covered text completely. The photographs aren't exactly "unseen" as they are various. I expected less euphemisms and an accurate story. Some of it was very good, like info on David and Jimmy Ruffin's relationship with the Tempts and Motown, although you have to look around for it.
Excellent find!.......2003-07-02
I gave it four stars because I wish that there was more on some of the lesser known artists at Motown. But overall, this is a great book filled with great photos of artists in their heyday and full of facts that probably weren't known about them until now. And they weren't just still B&Ws, there were photos of artists on tour, off tour, on break, very candid!
I'll Second That Emotion..........2002-03-02
The previous reviewers are absolutely right about this book. This is a fun and fascinating look back at a golden age of American popular music and the groups, producers and songwriters who made it happen. Much more than a rehash of the Motown story from secondary sources; the author personally interviewed many of the stars and lesser-known lights who helped create the music we love. Good, crisp writing and a generous collection of photographs bring the Motown story to life. A must-have for anyone who loves Motown or is interested in American popular music.
Encyclopedia of Hitsville.......2002-01-09
I got this book during the Christmas season and I can honestly say it was my best gift. Although I have always liked Motown, the subject is not one I would have requested a book on. Thank you you-know-who for disregarding my list this year. There is so much information here that I'm sure the author, for sanity sake, decided it was best to put it in an encyclopedia-like format. So, "M" for example, under Superstars, would list Martha and the Vandellas, the Marvelettes, and Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. This is not to suggest that because it's in that format, it'a a cold, reference book. Mr. Dahl presents each artist, songwriter, or musician's bio in a very readable, story-like way. And on some major artists, like the writers Holland-Dozier- Holland, they have their few pages, but in addition are incorporated into others' stories. In my family I'm considered the musical trivia expert, but a page didn't go by that I didn't learn something new and fascinating about an artist or the history of Motown. And there's a large section covering I believe every single person who even walked through the doors of Motown! I'm exaggerating, but it's an amazing list along with their stories of course. I was especially impressed with how Mr. Dahl brought out Berry Gordy's story of imagining the impossible and then bringing it to fruition. Oh yes, I forgot to mention there's a ...-load of great photos.

Interesting, but not outstanding.......1997-03-20
Because I am a fan of Amy Grant, I like to read anything written about her. This book gives a good back ground for how the industry of Contempory Christian Music evolved into the big business it is today. However, I sometimes got lost in the details of the different religions and history of the churches. Since it is unauthorized, there wasn't much written that I didn't already know-being a long-time fan. The book does re-inforce her rock-steady faith and love for God. Overall, the book gives a good chronilogical view of how Amy got into the business and made it what it is today

A Christmas classic for young children.......2002-12-18
I recently purchased this picture book in paperback and I love it so much that I am going to buy it in hardcover. The "soft sculpture" pictures are exquisite and truly help to make this book magical with the turn of every page. A wonderful retelling of the classic Christmas story told in language that young children understand. I read this book to my own children and my Sunday School class and I found every child to be enthralled with this book and it's beautiful artwork.
