    Book Description

Wallace Stevens was not only one of America's outstanding modernist poets but also a successful insurance lawyer--a fact that continues to intrigue many readers. Though Stevens tried hard to separate his poetry from his profession, legal theorist Thomas Grey shows that he did not ultimately succeed. After stressing how little connection appears on the surface between the two parts of Stevens's life, Grey argues that in its pragmatic account of human reasoning, the poetry distinctively illuminates the workings of the law.

In this important extension of the recent law-and-literature movement, Grey reveals Stevens as a philosophical poet and implicitly a pragmatist legal theorist, who illustrates how human thought proceeds through "assertion, qualification, and qualified reassertion," and how reason and passion fuse together in the act of interpretation. Above all, Stevens's poetry proves a liberating antidote to the binary logic that is characteristic of legal theory: one side of a case is right, the other wrong; conduct is either lawful or unlawful.

At the same time as he discovers in Stevens a pragmatist philosopher of law, Grey offers a strikingly new perspective on the poetry itself. In the poems that develop Stevens's "reality-imagination complex"--poems often criticized as remote, apolitical, and hermetic--Grey finds a body of work that not only captivates the reader but also provides a unique instrument for scrutinizing the thought processes of lawyers and judges in their exercise of social power.

            Book Description

This widely acclaimed book analyzes the political effects of scientific research as exemplified by one field, economic botany, during one epoch, the nineteenth century, when Great Britain was the world's most powerful nation. Lucile Brockway examines how the British botanic garden network developed and transferred economically important plants to different parts of the world to promote the prosperity of the Empire.

In this classic work, available once again after many years out of print, Brockway examines in detail three cases in which British scientists transferred important crop plants -- cinchona (a source of quinine), rubber and sisal -- to new continents. Weaving together botanical, historical, economic, political and ethnographic findings, the author illuminates the remarkable social role of botany and the entwined relation between science and politics in an imperial era.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book.......2004-09-04

This is an excellent book, very easy to read and covering the colonial economic botany (rubber, quinin, sisal) in a true apealing way.

5 out of 5 stars Best book my mom ever wrote.......1997-07-31

The author was my mother. The book, based on her anthropology thesis, applied anthropological concepts to the sweeping GLOBAL influence and changes of Western colonization using the British empire as the model. Its a ground breaking book, easy and interesting to read (don't mind the implicit occasional politics). "The best part" (that's an inside family joke) is learning about the relationship between colonial expansion, Kew Gardens, rubber plantations, malaria, chinchona (sp?) and Gin and Tonics. I actually typed an early version of this chapter and couldn't have been happier with the content

                Book Description

During the past few decades, characteristics of the countryside traditionally regarded as immutable have begun to change substantially. This book collects a variety of impressions of these changes in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada. It explores the issues of continuity and change associated with the operation of demographic, socio-economic and political processes as they reshape the countryside. An valuable survey for students and researchers in rural studies and geography, the book is also an indispensable guide for policy makers and professionals concerned with the management and planning of rural resources and the countryside.

                  Book Description

Colin Jones followed an unusual path into photography having been a dancer with the Royal Ballet until his late twenties. It was among his colleagues in the company that he began to take photographs and through dancing that he learnt of the tremendous physical labour involved in creating something of beauty. While on tour in the north of England he began to take pictures of the mining communities and it was not long before he had given up dancing to begin his new career, landing a job at the Observer alongside photographers such as Philip Jones Griffiths and Don McCullin.Colin Jones's subjects are working people: miners, shipbuilders, dockers - and dancers. This book comprises Jones's best work from his full career to date. Timeless and beautiful, it is an emphatic tale of industrial post-war Britain, and a moving portrait of poverty and physical hardship endured with dignity.

                  Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Honest and proud.......2003-08-20

So many thought provoking images, it makes you realise how tough life was for many people only a couple of decades ago. More ironic is the fact that some of the images are from the early 1990's and they sit very easily alongside the images from the 1960's. The whole book is fascinating, there is not a single image that looks contrived.

It's difficult to summarise the overall impresssion you get from this book, it's probably one of pride and as the title says 'graft' - it's not at all depressing or grim, quite the opposite in fact. However, it does make you realise that our comortable, modern world is lacking in opportunity for real grafters, more is the pity.

This new edition has been extensively revised by Ruth Goodwin, a well-known expert, to reflect twelve years of massive change to the goat-keeping world since the publication of the fourth edition in 1980. She has incorporated her revisions with great skill without losing the character of this classic book.

I've had a copy of this book for at least 25 years and read it over and over. It is by a Brit, but so what? Make the stretch. It covers so many aspects of the subject that transcend goats that it would be informative to anyone interested in land management and animal husbandry in general. He deals with concepts of nutrition ecology and health hardly ever dealt with today, such as alternatives to the use of mainstream comercial feeds, rearing methods and things too numerous to mention, and all from a unique perspective. A true lover of goats. It's THE Bible of goats, written back in 1957 and never equaled to my knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars The Goatkeepers Bible.......2004-01-18

I've had a copy of this book for at least 25 years and read it over and over. It is by a Brit, but so what? Make the stretch. It covers so many aspects of the subject that transcend goats that it would be informative to anyone interested in land management and animal husbandry in general. He deals with concepts of nutrition ecology and health hardly ever dealt with today, such as alternatives to the use of mainstream comercial feeds, rearing methods and things too numerous to mention, and all from a unique perspective. 5 out of 5 stars The BIBLE for goatkeepers........2003-06-27

This is a highly technical treatise oriented especially for Brits. Don't let that scare you though - it is a terrific book worthy of shelf space on any serious goatkeeper's library.

I have not found a better source within one book for dairy goat information.

You'll find a lot of useful information if you're wishing to learn about dairy goat farming. If, however, you also want to learn about meat goat production, buy Raising Meat Goats For Profit by Gail Bowman.

4 out of 5 stars Highly technical in spots, but with a wealth of info..........2002-10-24

This is a reference for a serious goat owner. It is not one I'd recommend for someone just getting into goats. But if you're really serious about your caprines, this book is a must-have.

The topics covered include: Control and Housing of Goats; Principles and Practice of Feeding; Selection of Breeding Stock; Breeding Problems; Disease and Accident; Milking and Dairy Produce; Meat, Leather, and Fleece; Goat Farming Systems; Crops for Goats; Goats for Export; Harness Goats; and more.

There is a thorough index, a bibliography, and several appendixes. The info is presented in a rather dry manner, but is very useful. There are lots of great diagrams, charts, and pictures. It's just a ton of good information. The only major fault I can find is that being published in Great Britain, it does use some terminology unfamiliar to most Americans, and doesn't deal with the US at all. But that's ok, we have enough other books which cover those topics.

Bottom line, if you're looking for a really good, technical reference book on goats of all types, this is an important one to add to your library.

3 out of 5 stars Better Suited for Brits.......2001-10-03

Lots of good anecdotal advise, even humourous at times. The chapter on goat health problems, poisons, and antidotes has proven useful, and is well organized. Genetic discussion on link between hornless goats and sexual malformity is thorough and necessary.

However, the book is written for a British reader, and lots of the medicines, practices, and even forage crop names, are different in the US. (e.g. lucerne = alfalfa) Delves heavily into dairy goats and dairy farming, but meat goat farming (Boers, Kikos, etc.) is only cursorily mentioned. The section(s) on nutrition is excessive for the average goat farmer, and the copious information about UK regulations is useless to the US reader.

                      Book Description

This edition contains fresh material about farm building design after 1880, and the problems of conservation as traditional designs become inappropriate for modern farming. The demands of conflicting conservation and re-use, and the danger of over-enthusiastic restorers are explored.
