Book Description

The American love affair with the Bungalow continues. And in this most adored housing style, it is the kitchen that homeowners must most often restore, renovate, or remodel. But no one wants an authentic Bungalow kitchen, which was a rustic space that usually featured just a stove, a hoosier, and a sink.

While there are books that describe the authentic Bungalow kitchen, there are few that show readers how to update a Bungalow to handle today's lifestyle needs and personal preferences. Happily, manufacturers today understand the demand, and there are many material and appliance options for homeowners--and the designers they hire--to bring contemporary convenience and beauty to an updated or new Bungalow kitchen. The New Bungalow Kitchen not only provides wonderful historical nuggets about Bungalow kitchens, it offers a plethora of ideas about how to create a tastefully restored or remodeled kitchen, or build new within the style.

As always Amazon had what I wanted. I love the book!!!Just what we were looking for. Your website is easy to use4 and navigate, you even linked me to the marketplace for further titles and books at half the cost of new. I did not know that marketplace existed, so I learned something new. Thank you for another great visit to Amazon.com

4 out of 5 stars New Bungalow Kitchen Review.......2007-07-06

The book gave us a lot of good ideas. We just bought a Bungalow built in 1941 and we are looking to overhaul the kitchen without disturbing the character and charm of the home. This book will help us do that. I was a little dissapointed that the book did not give more specific reccomendations i.e style of cabinets, materials used, finishes etc. They had some pictures, but alot of the details are not literally described . Still a great book.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book with the best, experienced advice to homeowners considering renovating their kitchens, no matter what style home .......2007-07-04

I relied on this very well-written, beautifully photographed book while renovating my 1900 colonial revival house. Mr. Labau's eye, obviously honed by long experience, is pretty amazing when it comes to combining the class of the old with the functional needs of the new.
The best thing about this book is that you don't put it away on a shelf. It is an art book, too!

Book Description

Taunton's new series, Updating Classic America, provides a unique combination of design inspiration and proven ideas for renovating, remodeling and building classic American homes. The first book in the series, Bungalows, provides a history and overview, along with proven, tasteful design solutions for a variety of bungalow-style remodels, additions, renovations, and new construction. Respected architects and bungalow owners Louis Wasserman and Caren Connolly inspire bungalow enthusiasts and homeowners to "put down the coffee table books," and "get to work on their own houses." Bungalows contains a wealth of successful design ideas for updating vintage homes and creating well crafted contemporary bungalows. More than 20 bungalows from around the country are highlighted with before-and-after floor plans, as well as options for a wide variety of budgets, styles and sizes of homes. 211 color photos and 56 drawings are included.

3 out of 5 stars inspirational, if not particularly informative.......2007-06-04

This book is richly illustrated with plenty of photographs of updated bungalows from several styles ranging from the simple Midwestern houses made to be affordable in their day, to modern, contemporary West Coast bungalows.
Where I found the book somewhat lacking was in the area of detailing before and after transformations of existing bungalows. Given the title, I would've expected more information about specific remodeling and renovation projects, with plenty of photos detailing "before", "during" and "after" the remodeling phases. There's very, very little of that in this book. The majority of the photos and scant floorplans dwell primarily with the finished project, though there are a very few that indicate what the owner started with. If you're looking for project specific guidance for rennovating or building your bungalow, this may not be the best choice. Still, the finished photos and supplemental text are inspiring. I would recommend this book with caution, based on the idea that it should likely be only one of many books in a modest library on period architecture upfitting.

4 out of 5 stars Call it four and a half stars.......2006-05-31

The authors of this book do a very good job of highlighting the bungalow's unique traits and then showing inspirational bungalow renovations. Early pages give the requisite definitions of what makes a bungalow, but I was most impressed by the middle three chapters: "Remodeling Inside the Walls"; "Beyond the Walls"; and "Brand New Bungalows". It is here that the authors challenge you to update your bungalow without losing any of the home's original character (or build anew with the same overall goal of classic home character).

As any bungalow fan knows, there are three definite "branches" to the bungalow tree: in the Eastern U.S. craftsman bungalows rule, in the Midwest you find prairie styles and simple Chicago bunghalows, and in the west you find mission styles and the Greene and Greene influenced California bungalows. Being from the Midwest, I found this book especially compelling because so many of the example houses illustrated in the book are from my part of the country. Thus if you are from the Midwest I recommend this book with 5 stars, otherwise I give it a 4.5.

Updating Classic American Bungalows is a must read for anyone who owns, lives in, or loves the bungalow style of architecture.

Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars More good ideas for bungalites.......2006-05-30

The authors confess early on in this beautifully illustrated book that they are themselves bungalow-owners and -dwellers, which makes them automatically sympathetic to the situation of the novice who finds himself with a fixer-upper or a house that needs a new kitchen, more storage, or just more space. And they tell, in a very practical way, how to go about creating what you need. Quite apart from the many beautiful full-color photos, they offer plenty of really vital information. "With the right architect, a radical overhaul can be sensitively done...[integrating] many of the interior details that people love about their bungalows," they say. "A potential side benefit of [renovating one's attic] is that [its slanted knee walls] may mean [it] isn't legally a room at all and therefore not taxed as a bedroom. Check to see if your local ordinance states that if more than a certain percentage of a room's walls are sloping, it is exempt from full taxation." (This is something that would never have occurred to me!) "As real estate values escalate, you may find that the lot is more valuable than the house itself. That, in turn, can make it difficult to get a mortgage on a 900-sq.-ft. house. But if you apply for a loan with a proposal to add on, you may have a better chance of getting financing...Look at the local ordinances covering setback and height requirements and limits on the percentage of the site that can be built on...You also have a chance to address any shortcomings your lot [yard] may have..." Team this volume with Treena Crochet's Bungalow Style: Creating Classic Interiors in Your Arts and Crafts Homeand Diane Maddex's Bungalow Nation (see my reviews) and you'll have a core shelf that will help you understand, appreciate, and sensitively update your bungalow.

4 out of 5 stars The Title Says it All..........2006-01-25

This book is called UPDATING Bungalows! Amazon is a wonderful resource because you can browse pages before you buy. This book should not be a disappointment for those who are paying attention.

I am now the proud owner of a 1922 California Bungalow. I have no illusions that this was the tract home of its day (I have found 4 others exactly like it in my neighborhood). This book embraces the ideals of the bungalow and the intent of the lifestyle completely. Not all of us can live in rarified homes in Pasadena or Chicago, and a strict period restoration with Stickley furnishings may not be practical for our lives in the 21st century. This book is about UPDATING what you have to balance the traditional Craftsman aesthetic with modern sensibilities.

For those who are hard core Craftsman enthusiasts bent on a period correct restoration, this is not the book for you. If you live in the modern world but respect the ideals of the era, check this out. There are plenty of good ideas, and a few photos of loving restorations too.

3 out of 5 stars MANY UNSYMPATHETIC RENOVATIONS.......2005-12-07

I appreciated the photos of the exteriors but was disappointed to see how many of the interiors were gutted to beyond recognition of the bungalow style. I bought the book to see bungalow style, not poorly interpreted modern cutups.

Book Description

The Arts & Crafts bungalow has been reborn, in as rich and full an array of iterations as it was in its heyday-from tight clusters of similar inexpensive housing opportunities to the grand, and arguably borderline, bungalow scale of the "ultimate bungalows" of the 1910s. The New Bungalow is a celebration of contemporary interpretations of this classic house style--an art form that symbolizes the best of the good life. It offers an alternative solution to the tract development filled with homes appliqued with various random trim details and contrived architectural components. It is a guide to creating a home that has a true, honest expression of style. Given their simple lines, spacious and open floorplans, natural tones, and colors, it is no mystery why new bungalow developments are gaining popularity.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good photos and inspiration for Arts & Crafts fans.......2006-03-03

The text that accompanies the pictures in this book isn't anything to crow about. That's okay, because the photos make up for it.

Most of the chapters in The New Bungalow assume that you have a bungalow to refurbish, or that you're building/buying a brand-new home and want to make it Bungalow-ish. I'm in a 1970s tract home that has no personality, and I want to add some. So the text, such as it is, isn't all that helpful.

But I don't mind, because the photos are so good. There's detailed and wide-shots of both exteriors and interiors, as well as every room in the house. I must have found a dozen, "ooh, isn't that pretty!" opportunities, and three or four "hey, we could do *that* over the entryway" inspirations. In addition to structural items (such as beautiful wood staircases and suggestions about how to incorporate modern lighting), the houses are decorated in a lovely fashion.

It's not the most valuable book I've found for growing my house into an Arts & Crafts inspired home. But if you're looking for inspiration, you'll find plenty here to like.

4 out of 5 stars What was, is, and could be........2004-01-25

If your interested in the history of the Bungalow style, and what makes a house a bungalow, or if your trying to figure out who designed your bungalow then this book will be worth while reading for you. Also if your interested in building your own bungalow or remodeling an existing one, this book should be quite helpful. The downside of this book is that it looks like it was published 50 years ago even though it was published in 2001! There are a few excellent photo's, some good ones, and a bunch of computer illustrations and other images that look like they are paintings or something that has been done with a cheap digital camera and a xerox machine! Not exactly a Coffee Table book. Also it does not go into great depth on any of the subjects, but then again I did not expect it to in the first place. If you want books that go into certain chapters/subjects in greater depth then buy ones that strictly talk about remodeling or ones that only talk about Greene and Greene or Arts & Crafts homes.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Idea Book.......2002-05-12

We are building a new bungalow and have gotten a lot of ideas here. Everything from window placement to hardware detail is in this book. This book is for anyone who wishes to build or remodel in the arts and crafts style or just add arts & craft details to their home.

5 out of 5 stars A truly beautiful, elaborate guide to the style of housing.......2002-05-06

A deftly edited series of essays by architects, designers, renovators and builders Matthew Bialecki, Christian Gladu, Jill Kessenich, Jim McCord, and Sue Bacon, The New Bungalow is a truly impressive and superbly illustrated coffee table "art book quality" volume dedicated to the specific issues relating to the restoration and proper care of bungalow houses. Full-color photographs bring to life the charming and cozy interiors of a wide range of bungalow housing, and the essays offer exquisite description of these home's formation, expression, and character. A truly beautiful and elaborate guide to the style of housing especially identified by its simple economy of space, The New Bungalow is an enthusiastically recommended addition to personal and professional interior design and renovation studies reading lists and reference collections.

4 out of 5 stars The New Bungalow.......2001-10-31

This is a nice hardcover book w/ a lot of good photos. It is good for getting ideas, but the text is really not well researched and more of an advertisement for the books contributors. Still it is nice to get additonal glimpses into what is currently being done in the "bungalow" style today. Do not buy this book if you're looking for meaty text and good instruction. Do buy this book if you are interested in some nice photos to give you some detail ideas and insight into todays bungalow stylings. It makes a nice addition to your bungalow library.

Book Description

Every year between 1920 and 1970, almost one million of New York City's Jewish population summered in the Catskills. Hundreds of thousands still do. While much has been written about grand hotels like Grossinger's and the Concord, little has appeared about the more modest bungalow colonies and kuchaleins ("cook for yourself" places) where more than 80 percent of Catskill visitors stayed.

These were not glamorous places, and middle-class Jews today remember the colonies with either aversion or fondness. Irwin Richman's narrative, anecdotes, and photos recapture everything from the traffic jams leaving the city to the strategies for sneaking into the casinos of the big hotels. He brings to life the attitudes of the renters and the owners, the differences between the social activities and swimming pools advertised and what people actually received. He reminisces about the changing fashion of the guests and owners—everything that made summers memorable.

The author remembers his boyhood: what it was like to spend summers outside the city, swimming in the Neversink, "noodling around," and helping with the bungalow operation, while Grandpa charged the tenants and acted as president of Congregation B'nai.

              Book Description

The development of paint-your-own ceramics studios, at which ready-made bisqueware and studio time for decorating it are sold, has made pottery decoration accessible to a wider public than ever before. Ceramics artist Jane Davies demonstrates how to decorate the surface of ready-made bisqueware and tiles using commercially produced decorating colors known as underglazes and other materials to create beautifully colored pieces. Practical step-by-step demonstrations of a variety of application methods-including brushing, shading, sponging, masking, sgrafitto, spattering, stamping, stenciling, marbling, majolica, and underglaze pencils-provide inspiration for decorating tiles, plates, cups, bowls, lamps, vases, and decorative platters. Davies also explores the creative possibilities of colored glazes, as well as decorating pieces after firing with acrylic paint and paper collage.

I am fairly new to ceramics and this book was a wonderful read. It explained had a lot of information regarding glazes and different techniques to using glazes. There were a lot of great pictures in the book to that gave me some good ideas for some of things that would be fun to make.

As an art teacher, I'm often looking for books that will benefit (inspire) my students. I highly recommend "A Glaze of Color" for artists, students and hobbyists who want a clear, step by step guide to the techniques used in hand-painted ceramics. This book is well written and has wonderful illustrations. I think that it is equally useful to those studing painting as well.

5 out of 5 stars Jaded but inspired.......2004-10-16

Over the past couple of decades I have edited art instruction books too numerous to count, including this one. I've been indifferent about many I've worked on that've found success anyway and enthusiastic about others that haven't necessarily found favor in the marketplace. So my personal preferences certainly haven't made me an authority about public reception or perception (or sales figures).

I don't give praise lightly. But when I edit something that offers me truly useful and valuable information, that really makes me want to revisit my old practicing-artist self, I can't help but express my enthusiasm. And A Glaze of Color made me enthusiastic. It really inspired me to take up the craft of painting again, to just indulge myself in working with color again, no matter what the medium.

So, discount my positive prejudice here if you must, but next time you're in a book store searching for some kind of artistic inspiration, for yourself or for your kids or for anyone, please look for Jane Davies's book A Glaze of Color, even just to thumb through it.
