Book Description
A dynamic new trend in residential architecture is documented in this important volume that shows how today's designers are boldly reinterpreting the work of Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, and other modernist masters. Continuing a trend that became evident during the last five years of the twentieth century, architects working at the beginning of the new millennium are looking anew at modernist plan types and styles, taking advantage of new and lighter building materials, and working with a fresh range of colors to enhance the sense of space in a wide variety of residential building types. These new looks are shown in thirty case studies, each recorded extensively through splendid color photographs, detailed plans and drawings, and full descriptions of the concept and design process, written by the project architects themselves. Among the distinguished designers are Peter Gluck, Gisue Hariri and Mojgan Hariri, Hank Konig and Julie Eizenberg, and Antoine Predock.

Photos.......2007-05-07
As with everything else from this author, it is just a collection of pretty pictures, with absolutely no detail on materials and construction techniques. There is a reason his books are so cheap.
An orgy of art houses with hard to read floor plans.......2001-08-24
Make no mistake, TNAH3 is beautiful. I loved the photos, especially of the interiors of the homes. However the floor plans are very difficult to read:
- numbers corresponding to a legend, and not words or obvious icons (like say a table and 4 chairs to indicate a dining room) are used for each room
- it is hard to tell with some of the larger designs what is interior or exterior, what's a wall versus a fence
- dimensions are not provided for either the rooms or the overall structure
Architectural masterpieces explored in astounding detail.......2001-06-06
"The New American House 3: Innovations in Residential Design and Construction" is truly a monumental resource for those interested in home architecture. Editors James Grayson Trulove and Il Kim have assembled 30 case studies of homes built between 1996 and 2000. The homes range from a 2,200 square foot residence to mansions of 10,000 and 12,800 square feet. The houses come from locations all over the United States: Lovell, Maine; Duluth, Minnesota; Fayettevile, Arkansas; Seattle, Washington; Tucson, Arizona and many other places.
Each case study includes detailed, eye-friendly floor plans, as well as many full-color photographs (both exterior and interior). Other features found in many of the case studies include cross sections, detailed elevations, axonometric drawings, site plans, and other visual supplements. Also included are descriptions of materials used in construction.
Although the houses represent a range of design approaches, the overall flavor strikes me as modern. Some of the many highlights include the daring cantilevered elements of the Nomentana Residence; the "Y" House (shaped, unsurprisingly, like the letter "Y"); the Emerson Residence, which beautifully blends traditional-looking shingled gables with some innovative elements; the Townsend Residence, a fantastic, flowing series of interconnected circles and curves; and Ledge House, with its striking blend of rough-looking logs and stone. These are just a few of the amazing sights in this book. I recommend "NAH3" with great enthusiasm.
Probably the best book in the series yet!!.......2001-02-11
This book contains some really good work. The previous books had a few projects here and there, but this one is pretty consistent on the quality of design. I especially like the number of projects from Arizona. (Dessert architecture out there is up and coming.)
As said before, I love these books because of the inclusion of key building details and the neccessary drawings to "see" the work past just the flashy photographs. Once again, I recommend the books in this series for someone interested in contemporary residential design, and for the designer who might need some ideas to get "un-stuck." I like to use them as visual aids to clients, also.

Revenants in Gray.......2005-10-24
Mark Nesbitt, a former employee at the Gettysburg National Military Park used to hear his fellow Park employees talk about odd encounters out on the battlefield and after a while he had some experiences himself. With his degree in English Literature it just seems natural that he would begin to compile these ghostly stories and write a book. Actually, this is the third book in the series and he has since come out with three more. Obviously there are a lot of ghosts in Gettysburg.
Once Nesbitt was himself convinced that there were indeed ghosts and spirits wandering around Gettysburg, and once he had collected several stories he began to write and his efforts have turned out several very good books, this one included. Each story is documented by eyewitness testimony and are sometimes also backed up by research done at Gettysburg College several years ago. It is also nice that the author has included a basic history of each haunted site. Those of us who have wandered the battlefield time and again tend to forget that there are those out there that might not be familiar with the Wheat Field or Spangler's Spring but this author has made sure that his work is accessible to all.
The most interesting chapter of this entry in the series is the chapter that deals with the disturbances that occurred during the filming of the movie "Gettysburg." It seems that all of these men dressed in period dress may have awakened some long quiet spirits because there were a lot of odd happenings on the battlefield and in the reenactor's campground. More activity in fact than Nesbitt could squeeze into this book for I have heard many other tails from people who were there. Suffice it to say that the Production Company had to keep replacing their night watchmen because they kept walking off the job.
In a review for the second book of this series I wrote, "Mr. Nesbitt tends to wander off all too often into the realm of philosophy, which is somewhat understandable in a book like this. Nesbitt however gets carried away on occasion and just about looses his focus. He also gets a little wordy at times and it seems as if he may be trying to impress academic types with his big words and flowery sentences. If this is the case he comes off as trying just a little too hard." Unfortunately the same criticism applies to this book although this problem is not quite as pronounced in this volume.
Still, this is a very good book, superior to it's predecessor in many ways, especially in the stories chosen for inclusion. I might recommend that you start with this book but it refers back several times to the two previous books so that idea is not feasible. My best advice is to just read them all.
The best information on great stories from Gettysburg!.......2002-08-27
Former Park Ranger Mark Nesbitt has over the years gathered many ghost stories from other park rangers, visitors and people who live in the area. Nesbitt tries to gather factual data on the stories he receives so he can offer a background as to why these ghost stories may have evolved. His stories are usually quite interesting and do not just talk about battlefield soldiers, civilians alike are also involved in famous ghost stories in Gettysburg! Buy all 5 books, there worth it! Each has many short stories that are easy and fun to read.
Great Ghost Book.......2002-03-07
I enjoy reading Mark's Ghost of Gettysburg books. He writes the stories against the historical background of Gettysburg Pennsylvania. I have personally met Mark, and although he acts like he doesn't believe a word you tell him about ghosts, he is a good writer. I like his latest book better than this one.
A Great Book.......2000-11-03
I think that this was a great book, and the style that Nesbitt writes with is amazing. I have read the book cover to cover many times. His writing makes it feel like you are in Gettysburg, seeing the ghosts for yourself. An essential for any body who loves the Civil War! Deals with a lot of paranormal sightings during the filming of the movie Gettysburg.
an excellent additiont to the great series.......1999-03-09
This is a phenomenal work, for the third time nesbitt has done a great job. it is perfect for someone like me, who has a taste for history and also the paranormal.

Book Description
It's a "pictorial guide to fancy footgear," states Texas Monthly. THE COWBOY BOOT BOOK has it all--history, anatomy, leathers, fit, care, makers, sellers, and famous wearers--even a glossary of boot terms for the novice. Beard's anecdotes and Texas charm will keep you entertained; Arndt's heart-stopping photos will keep you enthralled. The recent renaissance of artful bootmaking will keep this selling.
Customer Reviews:
A Collector's Classic.......2007-01-02
This is Tyler & Jim's first "boot book" and it has turned more people into boot collectors and bootmakers than any other.
I think it's because of the great personal stories it tells ...and the portrait Jim took of each maker. This book has the look and feel of a treasure map.
Originally printed in 1992, it's remarkable that it's still in print. Get it while you can.
The only one you'll need.......2004-05-14
If your're looking to buy this book then you've probably heard of the legendary book titled "Texas Boots" now out of print. Don't fret--this book is better. Whereas the older book was mostly black and white, this one has beautiful color pictures, and most of the bootmakers listed here are still alive. In fact, if you buy this book don't bother to consider "The Art of the Boot" by the same author as the two books are about the same, except that Art costs more and has a few more pictures, but the Cowboy Boot Book has a much better history of the cowboy boot.
A cowboy boot love affair.......2000-06-03
This is a book that works on many levels making it a great introduction to the history, art, and craft of cowboy bootmaking. It quotes Jack Reed, the only owner of a one-man boot shop left in Texas, saying it takes 372 steps to make cowboy boots, but is not detailed enough to list them all. Until I read this book, I had no idea that there was a market in vintage cowboy boots. I found out that original ornate tops can be fitted with a replaced foot to bring old boots back to life. Jim Arndt's photographs of boots, bootmakers, and boot collectors are outstanding throughout and really bring the book to life. The beginning of the book does an admirable job tracing the history of cowboy boots back to the old Texas-to-Kansas cattle drives of the post-Civil War era. This is followed by a great A - Z directory of the various skins that have been used to make the boots including characteristics, care, and current availability. The next section is a great history of the major boot making factories and the people behind them with chapters on Justin, Nocona, Tony Lama, Lucchese, and Rocketbuster. The rest of the book covers the rest of the cowboy boot business and personalities. Included are descriptions of individual bootmakers and cowboy boot collectors. Each is lavishly illustrated with pictures of them and their boots. The author and photographer are avid collectors and their collections are covered in this section of the book. The book ends with an outline of the retail side of the industry. Major sellers of new and vintage boots are described and a state-by-state Store Guide is included. Of course, not every state has a custom bootmaker or a vintage cowboy boot store, but you can still find the nearest one if this book has convinced you that you are ready for the next step above looking in the Yellow Pages under Western Apparel. The only place where I felt this book went too far is when they say in the caption to a photograph: "the details of this pair of boots could be compared to a fine oil painting." But if you want a basic knowledge of cowboy boots, or love to look at cowboy boots either in a store or on other people's feet this is the book for you.
Blew My Mind!.......1999-08-02
Yep, I'm a boot wearin' Jewish cowboy! (A doctor, in fact!) I started Country & Western line dancing a couple years ago, and from there I got into boots. Been wearin' 'em ever since!
That said, I was totally blown away by the unbelievable hand-made boots in this book. Spectacularly photographed, they appear as works of art. (I see that the same authors are publishing a book later this year called "The Art of the Boot". You know I'll be buying a copy!). I personally have a couple pairs of wonderful Tony Lama boots that fit like a glove, but the boots in this book are in a different class entirely - we're talking ten times more expensive than anything you might find on the shelf at a western wear store.
It'll be a while before I can afford any of the boots in this book, but it's nice to admire them, and appreciate the craftsmanship and dedication that went into making them.
Yee-Haw! A fresh look at iconographic western footwear........1998-08-08
Filled with great photographs and lots of info, this book is a visual kick in the butt as well as an interesting look at wearers and makers of boots. (Surprise inside - Imelda wasn't the only one with a problem.) The author's interest in the fancy, short boots of the 40's is apparent in the book; after all, they are fascinating to look at. On the other hand, there is not a lot of history associated with the development of the cowboy boot as an article of working clothing, or how it became a touchstone of American culture. In a nutshell, the book is a magnificent coffee table work that is much too informative to leave in the living room. There is nothing else quite like it in print and it is a must have for anyone into things Western.

Funny and a good lesson.......2007-07-30
My three year old grandson and five year old granddaughter loved the story and the illustrations. We read the story three times in a row and they loved the anticipation of seeing which animal was creeping up next.
Fantastic bedtime story!.......2005-06-11
My 4 year old son loves this book! He dreams of being a cowboy one day, and this book just makes him giggle! I woud recommend this to anyone who has kids that like cowboys or silly stories. I also read this at a Library pre-school reading hour and it was a big hit! 5 stars and then some!
Wonderful story for preschool and elementary aged children!.......1998-05-15
My children (ages 3&4) loved this book! We rented it so much from the local library that it was well worth the money to buy it.

Post Card Cowboy Boots (Jim Arndt).......2000-04-04
Anyone who has more than a passing interest in cowboy boots will have seen Tyler Beard's books: The Cowboy Boot Book and The Art of the Boot. Beard writes a fascinating story about the history and culture of boots, but the color photographs of the boots by photographer Jim Arndt really MAKE these books. Now it is possible to get a collection of Arndt's boot photographs in a handy-dandy paperback book of post card sized photographs. They are drop-dead gorgeous by a great photographer who also loves boots. Of course the individual post card photographs can be detached to send to special people, but I'd recommend getting two copies. Some to send and a copy to keep! Buy this book, but try not to lick the pages!

My Cowboy Boots is about a spunky little girl who doesn’t go anywhere without her red cowboy boots, including church.
Customer Reviews:
My baby girl loves this book.......2006-07-12
We were given this book when my daughter was 2 months old, and we began reading it to her right away. The sing-song rhymes and the colorful, happy pictures really hold her attention. There is the perfect amount of text on each page -- with some other books she loses her attention before it is time to turn the page. The pictures are interesting by themselves, as we have learned by taking the book to church with us. We can slowly turn the pages over and over during the entire sermon, and she looks at the pictures quietly the whole time. She is now 10 months old and still enjoys having us read it to her over and over. I am buying a second copy since she has chewed the edges and it is finally starting to fall apart. My only warning is that this book has a mild Christian tone (which we love), but might not be appropriate for everyone. On one page she sings "Jesus Loves Me", on another page she says "I know that God is smiling" and on the Sunday page she goes to church to pray. Overall, my husband and I both think this is a charming book for little girls.
Such a cute book.......2006-02-23
My little girl recieved this book for Christmas and really enjoys hearing it being read. The little girl loves her red cowboy boots and wears them every day of the week. Each day has a little rhyme for the reason the girl likes her boots. The pictures are very sweet and the little girl has such an expression of joy on her face. The wording is very good and has a good rhythm to it. Overall, it's a great book but probably geared more for a little girl.

LOVE THAT ARTWORK!.......2003-02-15
I PICKED UP "PUSS IN COWBOY BOOTS" QUITE BY ACCIDENT ONE DAY WHILE BROWSING IN THE CHILDREN'S SECTION OF MY LOCAL LIBRARY (LEWISTOWN, PA). I JUST LOVED THAT ARTWORK! HOW DID PHIL HULING GET THOSE REDS SO VIVID? EVERYTIME I DID THAT WITH WATERCOLORS, THE REDS ALWAYS FADED QUICKLY ON ME! ALSO LOVED THE UPDATING OF THE ORIGINAL PUSS IN BOOTS FAIRY TALE. I WAS JUST GLAD THAT THE BUSH FAMILY DIDN'T SHOW UP ANYWHERE IN THE MODERN TALE! (STILL, I WONDERED IF THAT OILMAN DIDN'T HAVE A CONNECTION THERE, SOMEWHERE!) ANYWAY, I LOVED THE STORY, AND EVEN THOUGH I DON'T HAVE ANY CHILDREN, IF I DID, THIS BOOK WOULD BE ON THEIR BOOKSHELF, YOU CAN COUNT ON THAT! A GREAT BOOK, AND ONE I RECOMMEND TO ANY PARENT.
New flare to old story.......2002-10-03
This book gives the old "Puss N Boots" a hot kick up. The story is modernized just enough to let the kids get a feel for the charactures in the story, while still having fun with the original tale. Beautifully illustrated it will bring enjoyment to all ages
Will make children of all ages whoop & holler !.......2002-10-01
This clever book will be a favorite in my house for many years to come. The eye catching colorful illustrations are perfect for keeping young children interested. And older children just find it a fun simple read. As a mother of two boys,1st and 3rd graders, I am always looking for fun books that will make them WANT to read. This is a book to get the readers reading!!
Wonderful illustrations!.......2002-09-27
I especially loved the watercolor illustrations of this fine children's book. They are creative, detailed clever and properly tied to the storyline.
I highly recommend this book to anyone with or without children who love fine watercolor.
