Retributionist vs. Utilitarian views of criminal justice.......2000-02-16
I wish Stanford Press would reprint this book so that I could own a copy of my own. As a death-sentence abolitionist, I was looking for a philosophical treatment of criminal sanction. I found it here in spades. Packer's prose is always penetrable, and the most abstruse philosophical issues made vivid through it. Categories are made concrete by examples, often from real cases. Packer's view is that neither the retributionist nor the utilitarian view (which includes rehabilitation)is by itself a sufficient basis upon which to found a theory of criminal justice. The one looks backward to past conduct, the other forward to predictions of future conduct. The one looks to the punishment aspect of the justice system, the other to its deterrent effect on potential wrongdoers. It is in the domain of excusable crime where Packer finds that neither model is by itself sufficient. If law enforcement and the prosecution allow perpetrators to escape prosecution, conviction, and punishment, the deterrent effect of justice is compromised. And the punitive aspect is abandoned when criminal conduct become a necessary but insufficient criterion for imposing penalties. The cost to society in the loss of utilitarian deterrence is made up for by a gain in freedom owing to less state intervention, especially when such intervention interferes with individual moral choices, and the imposition of punishment would serve no useful purpose since we assume these perpetrators are justified in their actions and need no restraint or reform. This is where Packer reveals his 60's liberalism. The ideal of maximizing individual freedom to make moral choices has become exhausted by the excesses of civil disobedience, hate crimes, police brutality, assassinations, scofflaw splinter societies, etc. This society now stands poised to abrupt the civil freedoms and rights guaranteed by its Constitution and trade them off for a greater sense of private security. Perhaps the time has come to re-examine the common-law notions of justifiable and excusable crime. For example, since it seems impossible to pass meaningful legislation controlling the purchase and possession of firearms, laws should be passed countermanding justifiable homicide when a firearm is used to commit this act. Self-defense would be no plea if a gun is used to kill your alleged assailant. Upon the successful prosecution of a few such cases, there would be no utility in owning a firearm for self-defense. And once people gave up their useless guns, they would not be so adamant about the right to possess them and conceal them from view. Then they might be willing to see the imposition of laws restricting ownership, for no other reason than to help disarm those they fear may be their assailants. Packer was wrong: the Benthamite view of crime and punishment is the right one, and it is sufficient. But Packer's keen arguments lead one to cogitate these matters.

I couldn't be happier with this sprinkler.
It's very nice to be able to point the heads in separate directions.
The quality is top rate.
Be sure to get more than one though as it's not practical to try to move it to different spots in you yard or garden.
You don't want to be resetting the directions of you sprinkler heads all the time.
It does take a little bit of time to begin with to get them adjusted to where you want them to go.
I'm going to be buying more of these and my daugher is going to buy some for her yard as well.

This book has a detailed description of just about anything you can think of when it comes to installing your own sprinkler system. From planning bluelines to selecting sprinkler head types, it covered all bases. I was a totally new to the world of sprinkler installation when I read this, and now I feel like a pro!

Good Starter Text.......2006-04-11
I've never done any irrigation work until recently. So I took a one day course from a pro and bought this book. Since a one day course can't cover all contingencies, I found that this book filled in a lot of gaps. My interest has mainly been in drip systems, not sprinklers. I now have a good working knowledge and sound like less of a fool when I order stuff from experts.
BTW, I think with this book and all the free specialized information on the Internet, most folks don't have to go much further to study the subject.
Does not tell how to install a sprinkler system........2005-06-08
Far too basic. If you want a glossy introduction to sprinklers, but have no plans to actually install a system, this is the book for you.
If you want to install a sprinkler system, there are maybe 5 pages of useful information in this book, and not near enough detail to actually break ground. Find another source of information.
A Pretty Good Basic Book.......2002-11-24
Just like most fields, irrigation is evolving quickly as regards new materials, products and standards. Overall, I feel the Ortho book gives good solid information for a do - it - yourselfer. There was no "BAD" information per se, and it does demystify the home irrigation system. You can save a lot of money installing your own system. You can also cause a lot of damage doing it incorrectly. This book can give you a good idea whether you can tackle installing a system or not. Use this book along with careful planning, to know what questions to ask either a sprinkler supply distributor or to hire an irrigation contractor.

Book does a pretty good job at hitting all the points in planning and installing your irrigation system. Installing a system kind of feels like a major undertaking at first, but after reading the book I feel pretty comfortable about it (although I've only begun my installation, guess we'll see if things stay nice and comfy). I liked some of the side points in the book where it went into a little more detail about certain aspects of the job, however, in other areas I felt there should have been more detail. Book seemed like it might be a little dated as a few topics seemed to stick with more old-school standards (e.g., poly-pipe is now used in many new areas to hook-up from the meter to the house, but the book assumed that you would only find copper, galvenized steel, or PVC (stiff white) pipe for this application). I also think a book like this should provide as many "common mistakes" as possible, this books only has a few.
Although my gut feeling says 3 stars, I have to upgrade to 4 because there isn't that many books our there like this one and relative to those it seems to be a winner.

Although I am stating that this book is a little to basic, maybe what I was looking for was just more then this book was intended to deliver. I was looking for a book to help calculate how many zones were needed, what type of sprinkler heads, etc. This book had great photographs and basic knowledge. If you are ready to design and install your own system you might want a more detailed book.

A Bit Disappointing.......2007-07-12
I have recently decided to equip my front and back gardens with drip irrigation, and was seeking some high-quality advice on the use of different types of emitters and sprinklers, as well as some saavy tips on setting up a system. What I got was a minimal discussion of the most basic aspects of drip irrigation. More space was spent on sprinkler systems (I should have guessed from the title). There was really nothing in here that I could not easily figure out myself.
It could be useful to someone who is absolutely clueless about drip irrigation.
I have said it before, and I find myself saying it again: Sunset Books have gone downhill. The new editions of their books are redone with scads of garden photographs. Gone are the highly instructional illustrations that used to characterize their books. If I can get previous editions of their books, I will do that. Unfortunately, drip technology is so recent that there really is no previous book by Sunset that covers it.
I doubt if I will ever order a Sunset book online again, but only from a store where I can look through it beforehand.

Misleading title.......2000-01-25
This book is titled for DIY but nearly every chapter seems to start with advising us to consult with and/or hire a professional. I got more information on planning and layout from websites of system manufacturers than from this book. There is a reasonably good summary of different types and it might be OK as a guide if you're planning on hiring a professional anyway but this is not a DIY nuts and bolts kind of guide.

More of a "why" guide than a "how-to" guide.......2005-01-16
I bought this book specifically in order to learn how to implement a drip irrigation system, and find that it isn't helping me much. I live in a climate where unirrigated plants die - even most xeric plants - so the discussion of hand-watering as a valid "irrigation" strategy is..., well, a little off-topic for my needs. The section on drip irrigation overlaps quite a bit with the free guides that are available from some of the drip irrigation manufacturers. The phrase "ask your irrigation equipment supplier" pops up any time the subject gets a little tricky - usually exactly at the point where I was hoping to get one of my big questions answered.
If you already know what kind of a project you want to do and are looking for some serious do-it-yourself information, I recommend that you do what I should have done - buy a book that is more targeted toward your specific needs and skip this general overview. I think that this book would be most helpful for people who have an established garden and watering plan, but aren't completely happy with it. If you want to cut down on your water usage and/or the effort you spend on watering, but don't know what your options are, this book may help you decide on your next step and, perhaps more importantly, motivate you to do it.

Before you spend money on any "How To" book , you need to ask yourself at what level of knowledge and expertise you're at. This book isn't bad for a novice wanting to put in a basic system. It does go through the myriad examples of sprinkler types and how efficient they are and the suitability for a particular application. But just like most fields, irrigation is evolving quickly as regards new materials, products and standards. Overall, I feel this book gives good solid information for a do - it - yourselfer. Sunset Garden Watering Systems.......2000-04-13
Sunset's Garden Watering Systems do-it-yourself manual is an excellent guide. I knew little to nothing about micro-irrigation before reading the manual. I needed to learn quickly for a project on drip irrigation. Sunset's logical layout with lots of explanatory pictures helped me understand the fundamentals (and intricacies) of drip irrigation. The terminology used was not difficult to understand for a beginner and they even include a glossary. The index was really useful to for quick reference. I recommend this book for any person who wants to learn about or install irrigation systems.
