Book Description
John Lautner is recognized as one of the foremost architects who practiced at the height of the modern movement. In The Architecture of John Lautner, stunning photography and insightful text illuminate the work of this modern master. This revised and condensed reprint of the Rizzoli title of the same name outlines all of Lautner's residential projects and details his career from his apprenticeship with Frank Lloyd Wright to his status as one of the preeminent practitioners of mid-century modernism. The book includes extensive photographs of Lautner's spacious residential interiors that have never appeared in other publications.
Lautner's highly personal designs for homes are known for their poignant originality as well as their ties to Frank Lloyd Wright's theories of organic architecture. As a student of Wright's, Lautner continued his tradition but branched out–many of his designs, such as the Chemosphere and the Monsanto House, have become icons of southern Californian architecture in their own right.

The Architecture of John Lautner .......2006-02-28
Lauther has been able to utillize unbuildable sites to create rooms with beautiful views.
design that transcends decades.......2002-03-14
it is amazing to see how the designs of the mid 1900's seem so contemporary even to the present day. this book captures the designs via beautiful photography and commentary.
even the layman will be amazed to find that many of the buildings have been used in the media for many years. whether in movies or magazines they have been associated with the most contemporary designs of our time.
highlights this architects mastery of a typical material palette of concrete, wood, and steel.
Lautner the master of panoramic windows.......2000-06-09
This book is really beautiful, the pictures are of great value. If the architecture can be said as to be a little "out of fashion" (I mean architecture of the fifties), it is anyway wonderful and inspiring to see such beautiful house. there is a lot of wonderful pictures of all the major houses build by lautner during his career. the only things that can be missed in this book is that there is no drawings but anyway, I really believe it's a good book.
A F.L. Wright Disciple Gets His Full Measure of Recognition.......2000-03-24
In the few months since I purchased this beautifully illustrated and impecabbly written monograph, John Lautner seems to have become Hollywood's favorite posthumous architect. This month's Vanity Fair features a screenwriter and his wife showcasing their restored Lautner masterwork while virtually every fashion spread in the same issue has one emaciated model or another posing, pouting and preening against a Lautner structure. This wonderful book travels Lautner's career arc from Wright disciple employing the tools and traits of the Master to the emergence of his own distinctive blend of wood, steel, concrete and location that, ultimately, bears little resemblance to his roots at Taliesin. As the text makes clear, Lautner shared Wright's prickly self-absorption and relentless self-philosophizing. However, as the book wanders from one beautifully executed commission to the next, you end up endorsing his sense of self. Like the best of Wright, each structure seems to organically emerge from its site to envelop the owners in a beautifully scaled and very human dwelling. A worthy tribute to John Lautner's artistry and vision.
Lautner Illuminated.......1999-12-25
This picture book of Lautner's work provides a new perspective to the innovative work of the architect. Although many of the buildings are captured in other publications, the images are different than anything out there. Reproduction quality is excellent, as well as composition.
Only way to improve this one is with a virtual tour. It would also be nice if the industry acknowledged this superior architecture - this is art, not just structure, and its truly American architecture. Current architectural trends are decidedly un-American; from Mediterranean, Spanish revivalism to Victorian - its all big time popular, but pure facade when compared to directly to American, European, and Asian modernism.

Book Description
Space age architecture American architect John Lautner (1911-1994) is responsible for some of the most original buildings of the space age and, indeed, the 20th century. The residences he designed in the Los Angeles area, including the Chemosphere House and the Silvertop, are synonymous with the hopes and dreams of an entire era. Characterized by sweeping rooflines, glass-paneled walls, and steel beams, his buildings displayed a combination of fantasy and minimalism, often integrating water and incorporating surrounding landscapes. Lautner always placed great importance on the relationship between humans, space, and nature.

Most books on Lautner (my father) are out of print and expensive. This one is a great small book that makes a terrific gift or handy guide. Some new pictures, some different buildings from Campbell-Lange's other Lautner book.

Lautner, 1911-1994: Disappearing Space (Basic Art)
ASIN: 187405665X |
Book Description
John Lautner was the quintessential Los Angeles architect. His houses, many perched on hillsides with sweeping glass walls overlooking the valley below, are icons of the drama and exuberance of the best of Southern California architecture.
Born in 1911, Lautner apprenticed to Frank Lloyd Wright before establishing his own office in Hollywood in 1939. Among his best-known projects are the Malin Residence (Chemosphere), the Reiner Residence (Silvertop), and the Elrod Residence in Palm Springs (seen in the James Bond film Diamonds Are Forever).
Designed with Lautner before his death in 1994, this oversized monograph is the only book available on the imaginative and exciting work of this modern master. It includes almost fifty houses, each described in detailed drawings and lavish photographs, as well as an interview in which Lautner discusses the most important influences on his work and his eccentric views on architecture.
Customer Reviews:
A treasure........2001-12-05
Any Lautner enthusiast will be captivated by this book. It covers more buildings than any of the others, and includes Lautner's own comment on each, making it an invaluable record of Real Architecture.
Most of the photos in this book appear to have been taken shortly after the buildings were completed (and some during construction), so it makes a great companion to "The Architecture of John Lautner," which has mostly rescent photographs. Together, the books give a facinating "the and now" contrast, and demonstrate the timeless quality of Lautner's work.
web page problem.......1999-04-09
I have no idea why "Therese Thau Heyman" review of world war two posters is on John Lautner's book page. Also, one of your two reviews is listed as refering to an out-of-print edition, rather unusual since this single book just came out rather recently
Lautner's work defined post-war space age architecture........1998-07-08
Lautner's designs defined post-war architecture; bold, shaking off the conventions of the past and looking towards the future. Think of George Jetson--Lautner would have designed his house. If you drove a car with fins and it looked like a rocket, you would certainly park it in the driveway of a Lautner designed home. His designs made use of the new materials that came out of World War II stainless steel, cast concrete and aluminum. He designed houses perched on the hilltops around Los Angeles, with wide expanses of glass and wild rooflines. His commercial designs included restaurants, schools and municipal buildings. Lautner's style is distinct--his structures stand out from the rest. Buy this book! It's a great retrospect of his work, loaded with fine photography and commentary. Put this one on your coffee table!
A great retrospect of one of America's greatest architects........1997-10-28
John Lautner, who passed away in 1994, designed some of the most innovative and daring buildings of post-war America. For many, his work is among the greatest statements to the the California lifestyle of the 1950's and 60's--bold, shaking off the past and looking to the wide-open future. Lautner made use of cast concrete, steel and glass to create dynamic stuctures that few architects or clients dare conceive today. Think Lautner, think Jetsons. This book shows us his work with outstanding photographs from the 1940's through the 70's and is peppered with Lautner's comments on the various projects. Whether you're an architect or a fan of the space age, this is one book that you're sure to leave on the coffee table!

The Architecture of John Lautner (Universe Architecture Series)
ASIN: 3822866210 |
Taschen
John Lautner learned architecture through hands-on-working experience rather than through classic academic training. He wanted ongoing change and passionate devotion. In 1933 he joined Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin West. Later, with his own office in Los Angeles, he became the only one of Wright's pupils who not only adopted the master's ideas but developed them further. For 50 years Lautner experimented with new methods of construction and with inventive formal departures, and of his 188 designs no fewer than 113 were built, most of them private houses. The sheer daring of these designs stunned his contemporaries, and remains stunning now. Many of his buildings, such as the celebrated Chemosphere, a home positioned atop a single concrete column built above Los Angeles in 1960, came to be seen as the symbols of a new architecture of limitless possibilities.
Customer Reviews:
Curvaceous Concrete Castles!.......2004-01-16
I would have given this book 4 stars except that it is written in more than one language which makes the book a bit harder to follow. But there are lots of nice photos of Lautner's homes, except for 2 of them which look like they where done with a cheap digital camera and printed on a xerox machine! I cannot complain about the price though.
John Lautner-The Big Series.......2000-03-28
The large color photo's in this book are wonderful, but unfortunately, there is not as much information on the architect and the individual projects he worked on, that there are in the other 2 Lautner books I have Purchased ("John Lautner- Architect", and "The Architecture of John Lautner". Also this book is written in three languages and therefore the layout is a little confusing. If you are a huge Lautner fan like I am, you will still enjoy the book, and considering the cost is less than 1/2 the price of the other 2 I mentioned (unless you purchase the softcover edition) I consider it a great coffee table bargain.

Book Description
In 1937, then apprentice with Frank Lloyd Wright, John Lautner (1911-15) came to Los Angeles to supervise construction of the Sturgess Residence. Two years later he established hiw own office in Hollywood, building a house for himself with Henry Russel Hitchcock called "the best house by an architect under 30 in the US", the first in a long line of unique buildings. Never part of the architectural establishment, John Lautner has always practised what he called
<
>. Among the best-known examples are the Malin Residence (Chemosphere), the Reiner Residence (Silvertop), the Arango Residence in Acapulco, and the Elrod Resdience in Palm Springs. His work ranges from exciting but low-cost houses to finely crafted large residences, to restaurants and educational facilities.

Marvelous resource and record..........2004-06-08
This book is really a treasure, with virtually all of the text and commentary provided by Lautner himself. A wonderful resource for anyone interested in understanding Lautner and his work.
The photographs, plentiful, are not quite as striking and colorful as in later books (especially the Hess/Weintraub book), but are interesting as most seem to be roughly contemporary with each building's completion, probably the original documentation photography, usually showing the original furniture and decor. (This is also the reason that a few buildings, like the Harvey House, have no interior photos--Lautner was not happy with certain decorative decisions and would not permit their publication.) This book and the Hess/Weintraub book together allow a fascinating "then/now" look at many buildings, showing how well they have adapted and survived changing styles and tastes.
Furthermore, this is the most comprehensive of the books on Lautner, including a great deal more buildings than the others and also a complete list of works, both built and unbuilt, sometimes with drawings. Buildings are also covered in more detail, with plans and sections provided for each.
A note on the older/hardcover editions: some may have binding errors, such as groups of pages out of place or upside down (the title is also upside down on the spine), but these errors may be unique to just a few copies, I'm not sure. Also, I know there is at least one photo that is slightly different in my hardcover copy than in the paperback--same view, different lighting and furniture.

The Complete Book of Silk Screen Printing.......2007-09-06
An interesting historical look at the nuts and bolts of screen printing in the early times. Fascinating for history buffs but of limited practical use in today's world.
At its original publication it would have provided an incredible insight in to the then modern techniques.
Screen Printing History.......2002-09-19
If you want a good history from the 60's of screen printing then this is the book for you. It was first published in 1963 and hasn't been updated since. Old black and white pictures are included that would be seen in an old Popular Mechanics to include the hand drawn illustrations. If your looking to review or learn new techniques or just refresh your memory this is not the book to get. I'm starting my own business and after being out of it for a few years I was wanting a refresher book I could look to. This was not the one.
Complete Step by Step Process.......2001-03-09
This book gives a clear and complete picture of every aspect of press operation and silk screen technique-from individually operated manual presses to modern automatic presses capable of turning out 2000-3000 impressions an hour-and indicates the subject, this volume includes practically everything of importance known about the silk screen process.
don't waste your time.......2000-02-16
if you are looking for a D.I.Y. book on silk screening look elsewhere. this is more of a historical review of the process. the book was copywritten in the '60's so there isn't any "new technology" in the content.

The Complete Book of Silk Screen Printing Productio
Book Description
Spotlights "green" technology, safe for all artists Distinguished author has worked with Andy Warhol, Red Grooms, Romare Bearden, and other top artists Techniques range from the traditional hands-on to the latest in digital screenprinting
For many years, screenprinting was oil-basedand presented significant health risks even as it damaged the environment. Today, fortunately, screenprinting has shifted to water-based technologies. Now Roni Henning, a leading expert on screenprinting, offers her tips and techniques for getting the most out of these safer, "greener" water-based methods ranging from the traditional hands-on methods to the latest digital technology. She explains separations and color correcting, then discusses the artist-printmaker collaboration, giving intriguing examples from her own work with such luminaries as Andy Warhol, Red Grooms, and Romare Bearden. Henning also offers step-by-step instructions for monoprinting, her own direct-to-screen watercolor process. Illustrated with glowing examples of the printmaking medium, including works by Bearden, Jack Youngerman, Gene Davis, and Elizabeth Osbourne, this is the definitive work on an increasingly popular art.
Customer Reviews:
The author works "with you" and doesn't talk "down to you".......2007-08-16
If you are a curious person, interested in learning the art of silk screening, in as direct of an approach as possible, I personally feel that this books author does a great job of articulating her theories and principals in a very user friendly fashion.
The above sentence is an example of how most technical books would use the English language to make the readers brain ache . . .
If you are curious about silk-screening, I think the author of this book does a great job of explaining things in a clear and understandable way.
The above sentence is an example of how I felt as I made my way through Roni Henning's latest book, "Water-Based Screen-printing Today".
Having had the privilege of actually attending a function honoring Roni Henning's artistic works, and having the pleasure of speaking to her in person, I have to say I walked away with the impression that the author is truly passionate about "teaching".
She has a special, "down to earth" air about her, like most artists, yet she also presents her thoughts and ideas in a regimented, professional and interesting way.
It's that kind of approach that makes her lessons and her book a very easy and comforting guide to follow when exploring the art of silk-screening.
"Water-Based Screen-printing Today" helped turn what was just a curiosity of mine, into a blossoming hobby.
While it might be true that actual silk-screening classes, with true hands on experience can't be replaced by a book, for me this book provided enough helpful information, for very little money, to help me decide if silk-screening was something I might wish to pursue further.
I don't think you can ask much more from a book such as this.
I hope to some day make it to one of the authors workshops that she has on occasion throughout the country, so that I may find out if I have the ability to take my hobby to an even more fulfilling level.
Great Teaching Tool.......2007-08-08
This practical guide to the silk screen process is really useful. There are plenty of illustrations and detailed instruction on how the author achieved the look shown. Of course, as with all art making, there is always more than one way to do something. The author explains how projects are handled in their particular shop. The section on halftone screens is very useful, as is the explanation of monotyping. This book takes the time to explain ways of making the process work "at home." I used sections out of this manual for a beginning silk screen class, and they found it helpful
Book Description
A complete home course in silk screen, describing all five of the most general and useful techniques. Step-by-step instructions plus chapters on multicolor silk-screening, color matching, and blending make it possible for anyone to produce fine, well-registered prints. 141 illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
A Highly Practical and Usable Intro to Silkscreening Techniques.......2007-07-03
I bought this book in 1971 and used it to create a silkscreen illustration for my university thesis. I got very satisfactory and professional looking results on my first try. For anyone, experienced artist or not, who wants to start silkscreening or just try it once, this book plus a trip to the art supply store is all you need. The book starts out with an overview of silkscreening history, basic principles, and basic equiment. It then presents five different methods with liberal photos of examples for each method: paper stencil, block-out stencil, Tusche stencil, film stencil, and photographic stencil. You chose the method most appropriate for the end result you want to achieve. There are step-by-step procedures given for each method, liberally illustrated with sketches. The book concludes with chapters on the ins and outs of multicolor printing, color properties of pigments in oils and tempera, and tricks and techiques of printing. All in all a tremendous amount of practical how-to information in a relatively small volume... very complete and efficient. I highly recommend this book. The only thing missing -- due to its age (1958) -- is computer-assisted techniques; however that is for a different book. This book is not for keyboarders in their home offices. It is for artists and hobbyists who want to see, touch, and smell real hardware, tools, inks, paints... preferably in a messy and paint spattered studio or workshop.
Ancient History.......2002-09-19
This book has a beautiful cover. With that said, this book is a history of screen printing. Written in 1958, it doesn't even come close to being up to date. No new revisions. Not worth your time unless your a screen printing historian.
Book Description

Book Description

Good book for beginners.......2006-11-11
I have purchased several books on batik, this is the best of the lot. Book has very clear, step by step instructions and includes simple projects such as paper, pillow case, and works up to more complex projects. Each project is accompanied with photographs, so its pretty easy to follow and understand the process. Also nice color photo of each finished project.
great generous book.......2002-08-15
I've started doing batik just a couple of months ago, and this is the third book I have bought from Amazon on this subject. I think this is the best of them three because it has very very clear instructions on every project the author suggests, great photos of each step, she shows very clearly a lot of techniques to use on different things (check out the lamp shade it's great)and I think most important of all she is very generous about her knowledge of batik, explaining everything that could happen if you do this or that, and with every day words, not all the technical-chemical mumbo jumbo i've found in other books.
One last thing, check out her galley in the book: it's really beautiful!

Not deep enough or broad enough.......2003-02-21
I recieved this book as part of a start up kit on batik. The billing on the book was that it was a good how-to on the batik process. I found it to be remarkably lacking. There was no advice as to how to deal with the more common problems mentioned in the process, and the process, itself was extremely lacking. There were a lot of pretty pictures of batik work from a modern standpoint - but they did not fit in well with the subject matter and seemed more like a "look what I did". There were very few pictures, for example, of the various steps of the process while the artist was in action.
I suppose at this low cost, you get what you pay for.
