Please read.......2006-06-18
If architecture is viewed as ideas of establishing different relationships between people and space, then structure is the first step to achieve these relationship in reality. How do we appropriately use different structure elements in reality, what kind of architectural effects will them create? These questions are answered in Andrew W.Charleson's book 'Structure as architecture'. The book is divided into chapters such as function/exterior/interior of buildings, structural detailing, light and structures and so on, which are discussed from both theoretical and practical approach. With enormous amount of first hand photo illustrations, the book also gives a comprehensive visual case studies to the reader. It is enjoyable to read and I recommend this stunning book to all architectural, building science students as well as architects and engineers in practice.
Compulsory purchase for Architects and Engineers alike.......2005-12-10
Although Architecture and Engineering are really only different sides of the same coin, they are often treated in completely different ways. Certainly they are normally approached from different directions. Charleson's book addresses this lack of continuity, and reduces structural diagrams down to a simple level (good for architecture students) as well as opening up the ideas of light and air and structure to thoseof a more engineering bent... And from all accounts he's a pretty inspirational lecturer as well, with the students fizzing away with excitement.
End result: if you are a student of Architecture or Engineering, then rush out and buy this book. Invaluable source of knowledge - guaranteed to help you through those exams...
Excellent book on the topic STRUCTURE and ARCHITECTURE.......2005-11-28
As per name, this book provides an excellent reference to building structures that expresses its architectural ideas. The book is well written and provides examples from around the world! ^_^
A student's opinion.......2005-10-04
I am a student studying architecture, and have found this book to be a very useful reference.
The first time I used it, I was looking for specific examples of "expressive" architecture. In the index, I found a long list of qualities such as "grounded", "light", "dynamic" etc. with references to pages illustrating specific projects whose structure has those qualities. The clear, full colour photos really help you get the feel of the buildings.
I don't know of any other book that I could have looked to for that purpose. Of course, the content is useful for numerous other reasons as well.

Brilliant Stained Glass Mosaics combines two popular crafts into one exciting new art form. While most traditional opaque mosaics can be attractive and fun, they lack the creativity and excitement provided by the addition of stained glass. Glass-on-glass mosaic projects come to life because they can be illuminated by candlelight, incandescent or natural light.
This book illustrates simple mosaic techniques that can be used to create stunning, sophisticated designs for both home and garden décor. There are 12 glass mosaic projects in all, including windows, vases, candleholders, picture frames, light fixtures and more!

The Mosaic Artist's Bible.......2007-02-03
A good buy definitely worth the money. A must have for anyone serious about pursuing this art. It gives details of scale drawings for all projects and a color palette which are helpful. However,it doesn't give an estimate of the number of tiles or the best type of tiles needed for each project.
Great resource.......2007-01-12

Customer Reviews:
Martin is great.......2007-08-16
I have been a mosaic artist for seven years and I would say this is a good book no matter what your level of experience. I also enjoy Martin's work and like to see what he is up to. Great resource and inspirational too.
Milifiori in Mosaics.......2007-06-27
I may be a bit predjudiced as a moaic artist myself, specializing in millifiori, but I loved Martin's extensive use of this wonderful material throughout the pages of his book. Used as accents and as full areas of pattern, he has shown the reader an exciting new direction that modern mosaics is moving using a very old traditional Italian glass but in adventurous new ways.
Now that being said, Martin offers a variety of interesting and inspiring projects for all levels, rating his projects on a difficulty scale of 1-5 and on a working scale of a few hours to several days required to complete each project. He also offers several different methods of working, including techniques such as direct, indirect, transfers, outdoor casted concrete and working over wood, metal and glass as a substrate.
Not all of it is for everyone, but I am sure there is more than one project in Martin's book that will inspire you to want to run to your craft table and start pulling down the tiles. For me, it was his wonderful Storm Lights and his 'Day of the Dead' Mosaics in smalti and millifiori.
Bravo Martin, you are one of todays' leaders in contemporary mosaics. Laurel Skye

Pietra Dure: The Art of Semiprecious Stonework (Getty Trust Publications: J. Paul Getty Museum)
ASIN: 0856675105 |
Book Description
The technique of Hardstone mosaic was developed in the sixteenth century under the patronage of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany, in parallel with the revival of Roman mosaics made from tiny tesserae. Complex images were created from a matrix of coloured marbles and semiprecious stones, selected and cut with breathtaking craftsmanship. During the seventeenth century the technique was used in the production of some of the most magnificent luxury objects in Italy; in the eighteenth century, panels of landscapes, birds and flowers were incorporated into furniture and snuffboxes. This gave way in the nineteenth century to the production of pictures in extraordinarily convincing imitation of oil paintings.

Tudy Sammartini.......2001-12-05
I have both of Tudy's books; she also wrote The Secret Gardens of
Venice. In October, I had the honor of meeting Tudy (what a colorful and dramatic character!) in Venice and accompanying her on a private garden tour of this magical city. She truly knows the aesthetic history of Venice and it shows in her books.
Gorgeous!.......2001-01-11
This is a terrific buy. If you never wanted to go to Venice before - you will now! The photographs are outstanding and the text not too boring. An invaluable reference for artists. Thank heaven someone thought to study these ancient floors before they are lost! Supposedly "there is nothing new under the sun", well, I would consider having one of these designs in a new home, if I could find anyone with the patience to complete one!

Lavishly illustrated with color photographs, The Art of Decorative Mosaics will provide inspiration and instruction to students, amateurs, and established mosaicists. Elaine M. Goodwin is a mosaic artist of international standing.

Informative, rich in text and pictures.......1999-12-15
I first saw this book in Ravenna, Italy, the capital of mosaics where I was taking a workshop, and I passed on buying it there. But I'm glad I bought it. One of the things I like about it (Goodwin is a very good technician) is the way she has taken different mosaic material -- stone, smalti, vitreous glass, ceramic, broken china etc. and made different birds so you can see what the properties of the tesserae bring to the design. While everyone feels it's necessary to write history on mosaics, Goodwin's is particularly interesting. Even though I'm not a huge fan of all of her work, I did like this book quite a bit and I'm pleased I have it in my collection.
