Book Description
The latest installment of Rizzoli's best-selling series of monographs on one of America's most important architects, Richard Meier, Architect Volume 4 documents Meier's work since the publication of the previous volume in 1999. This extensively illustrated presentation vividly conveys the purity and power of Meier's unique and celebrated vision. Twenty-seven residential, commercial, and civic projects are featured, including the 173/176 Perry Street residential towers in New York overlooking the Hudson River, perhaps the most celebrated new apartment buildings of our time; the Yale University History of Art and Arts Library in New Haven, Connecticut; and the Vatican-sponsored competition for his winning Jubilee Church of the year 2000 for the Vicariate of Rome.
The development and significance of Richard Meier's work is discussed in two essays by the distinguished architectural historians and critics Kenneth Frampton and Joseph Rykwert. A biographical chronology and a selected bibliography complete this elegant and comprehensive monograph on a modern American master.

helpful.......2006-03-18
i recommend this book to anyone, especially to the architects, but unfortunately i have to agree with the other reviewers; the first three are really better than this one.

Disappointing addition to the Meier series.......2005-11-11
I have to agree with the first reviewer. Something about this book just doesn't live up to the excellence of the earlier 3 volumes. Perhaps it's the heavy lineweights of some of the plans and elevations. Or perhaps it is the sudden introduction of dozens of computer renderings which are either too bland or overdone. On one hand they fall short of photorealism, while on the other hand these collages of blazing color/material/fake-looking-people detract from the architectural purity of Meier's work. Sadly the tiny images in the chronology at the back of the book reflect Meier's style better than the projects this book chooses to present.
That said, this book contains the Jubilee church, the two courthouses and a few private houses all of which are Meier at his best and are well documented with drawings and photos. That alone makes this book worth the purchase price. But if you're hoping for a book equal to or better than Vol 1 or 3, prepare to be disappointed.
Excellent book, not works though.......2005-10-08
Meier's has passed his peak after Thomas Phiffer leaving his office and that's cleary illustrated in Vol.4. The 2 courthouse projects are the best among them while those apartments are just cheesy and really get me wonder why he even take those jobs. Yale Univ. project is simply diegrading, almost an intentional offense to one of P.R.'s best.(Is Yale that cheap?) That being said, Jubilee church is one of Meier's best works, which really save my faith in him.
The book is still edited well, except some of plan lineweight is on the heavy side. I highly recommend Vol. 1 & 3, with Vol.3 being simply astonishing.
Meier Meier.......2005-10-06
Richard Meier ARCHITECT V-4 can be considered as a window accesible to everyone who would like to know one of the world's leading architects and his works from a closer distance.
On the otherhand, Keneth Framptons essay lets us make a fruitfull kickoff before we come face to face with the various projects of Meier presented in a quite explanatory way. Though the texts acommpanying visual metarial is limited with very basic knowledge; drawings project, photographs and 3d presentations -hardly distinguishes from real Photos- are satisfying.
Briefly it can be claimed here that this book is a good source which puts forwards the way a star architect represents his ideas with supportive visual material, however the textual structure which could have provide an access to the design processes is very poor.

Amazingly Useful!.......1999-01-23
This is one of the most useful books I have found for educational purposes. It provides solid information, but even better it has forms /work sheets. These are located in the book (for Xeroxing) and on the CD-ROM (for printing). You can alter the forms on the computer (CD-ROM) if you need to. For teachers, or librarians who work with the Internet and database programs, this is great.

Once Upon a Farm.......2007-08-12
Bob Artley is so talented and gives you the feeling you are back on the farm again. Brought out so many wonderful memories that I had forgotten. Great book!
A WONDERFUL TRIP BACK HOME.......2004-07-14
My mother is in her eighties and her dictum has become (for gifts),
if I can't wear it, eat it or spend it, don't give it to me. I
broke the rule when I gave her this book for Christmas, and she
loved it so much it brought tears to her eyes.
Bob Artley came from a town not more than 50 miles from my home
town and his age is not that far from the mother's age, and since
my mother also grew up on a farm, going through the book was like
going back into her own very real time. Unlike Mr. Artley and
probably nearly all girls who live on farms today, my mother did
not do chores connected with the farm. That was a guy-thing.
Girls worked in the house. Period. But she certainly had
brothers a-plenty who did those very same things in very similar
ways as did Mr. Artley. The illustrations are wonderful,
so realistic you can almost smell the hay, and other things
not quite so fragrant connected with farms.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has ever lived on a farm, lived near a farm, driven by a farm. It is a document of
a way of life that is swiftly leaving the scene, more's the
pity. It should also be in school libraries.
Even very young children can get a real sense of what it was like
to live on a farm through the marvelous illustrations
A book with heart.......2002-02-21
This is a beautiful book written by a writer and illustrator who grew up on an Iowa farm in the 1930's as the "age of the horse" was giving way to the "age of the tractor." The author, Bob Artley, illustrates with detailed sketches and color drawings of such things as walking through the spring mud from barn to barn carrying a bucket of feed, a birds eye view of the farmstead, one of father and son cleaning oat seed with a hand powered fanning mill, planting corn behind a team of horses, milking a cow the old fashioned way, the details of a cream separator, threshers at harvest time and much more. Mr. Artley writes a description of the work they did, what was hard, what was fun and a few of his personal memories of the feelings that he as a child had living this life. It is a touching book written with love and realism describing a lifestyle that has passed by. I especially loved his description of the barn chores where each cow had her chosen place where they were fed silage topped with ground oats and linseed oil, and where they would bed down in the straw with their heads in the stanchions feeding on clover hay. Mr. Artley is not overly sentimental in his memories. He also explains the distastefulness of cleaning out the gutters, working in the cold and the heat etc. He gives us a balanced look at farm life prior to telephones, electricity and indoor plumbing. This is a wonderful book for both those who also experienced farm life in the 1930's as well as younger people like myself who are simply interested in the lives of an older generation.
Boy, do the memories come back with this one!.......2000-12-26
This book is incredible. It's like a technical manual for those who wish to draw back upon fond memories of a rural life they either once had, or wish they had. I picked this book up and couldn't put it down, the thoughtful attention to detail that Artley puts into this thing just blew me away. On one side, as an artist and someone who appreciates clear, instructive visual art, I loved this book, and when you combine that with the fact that I also have specific visual memories of the farm, this book delivers on a number of levels. I immediately gave it to an elderly in-law who was also fascinated by it's images and stories; I'll get myself another copy right away.

Product Description
For over forty years, Joan Liffring-Zug Bourret has photographed Iowa's Amana villages and the people. The Amanas once were a communal society, one of the longest lasting in America. The earliest image, taken in 1959, is part of a series originally taken on assignment for The Iowan magazine. That image is of workers eating lunch at the Colony Inn. The most recent images are of the color cover of tulips and trees blooming in South Amana, and of the 1999 Maifest. The book begins with photographs of the Community of True Inspiration, the religion of the original Amana settlers, their churches, and religious followers. The next section is "The Communal Legacy" with villagers, villages, and artifacts left over from the days when the colonists followed a system of religious communal life. In 1932 they voted The Great Change to a free enterprise system with a corporation owning the 26,000 acres, mills, and various businesses. The people could now own their own homes. A photograph taken in 1982 shows "Those Who Knew the Communal Way," the earliest years after The Great Change. A final section titled "The Winds of Change" shows the traditions of Germany as celebrated in the Maifest and an Oktoberfest. The Amana Heritage Society documents its historic past in several museums. Over 100 black-and-white images are included in the book. The color section, "The Beautiful Amanas, The Amanas in Bloom," has thirteen photographs, ending with two views of the Native American Fish Dam on the Iowa river prior to the destruction of the dam in the floods of 1993.

A Foreword by Lanny Haldy, Executive Director of the Amana Heritage Society, and a Preface by Abigail Foerstner, photography critic, contribute to an understanding of the community and the photographs.
In her introduction, Joan writes, "the spirit of love and friendship, religious faith, and traditions continues today even through the vast winds of change in the Colonies and America.
An exhibition of the photographs complements the book.

Great book for Iowa Lovers.......2000-04-29
This book was given to me for Christmas...I loved it. The poem, Landscape-Iowa by James Hearst on page 45, is excellent. From the State Fair to the Madison County Bridges to the Field of Dreams...it's all there.
A feast for the eyes, illuminating the history of Iowa........1999-03-26
As a lifelong Iowan, I was delighted to find this beautiful little volume. It is profusely illustrated, mainly with artworks (but also a few well-chosed photographs,) of all things Iowan. The text lovingly describes our land, history, and culture, as well as art and literary endeavors, public works, and things that are uniquely Iowan. It ends with a perenial calendar of events and festivals, and a list of museums, attractions, gardents and other resources. Delightful to look at, it invites browsing throught it colorful pages. I use this as a perfect gift for out-of-state visitors.
