5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2005-10-28

I am in love with this book! It is clear, concise, well-written, and has wonderful graphics. I am a landscape architecture student at UCD and this book has taught me more than any of my teachers combined! Highly recommend.

3 out of 5 stars Residential Landscape Architecture: Design Process for the Private Landscape (4th Ed).......2005-10-12

I am a student at Kansas State University in Landscape Design, and this book is wonderful for getting ideas, symbols, and disign techniques. My professors own this book, and constantly approve and recommend this book for sudents. Although it is titled for a private resident, professional landscapers use this book also. This is one book you should add to your library.

5 out of 5 stars Later Edition Available.......2005-05-19

This book is great, but you might like to know that a 4th addition of this book is now available. Type in - "Residential Landscape Architecture: Design Process for the Private Residence (4th Edition)" and check it out.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Landscape Architects.......2002-11-19

Booth and Hiss describe in much detail the design process for residential landscapes. They strike a proper balance between basic design concepts and essential business knowledge. Landscape design students would do well to internalize the process described here, since the book's practical focus is unlikely to be duplicated in their Landscape Architecture curriculum.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2002-05-18

This book is truly a gem -- it clearly and concisely explains every imaginable aspect of residential landscape design using very straigtforward and easy to understand text and diagrams.

Ignore the fact that this seems to have been written as some sort of textbook for a beginer's course for professional landscape architects. I am an ordinary homeowner and I found the book to be easy and enjoyable to read, and quite educational. I now feel like I understand enough to design a professional quality landscape for my own home.

In case it matters, I own the second edition (Amazon is now selling the third edition). I can only assume that this latest edition is even better than the edition I have.

      Book Description

In the flourishing ancient Indian communities of the American Southwest and northwest Mexico, master potters created ceramic arts that are considered among the most accomplished in the world. The symbolic imagery and distinctive local styles of the region are unmistakable—simple volumetric shapes covered with complex, interlocking geometrical designs that are sometimes combined with bold abstract animal, human, and composite figures. Within this shared tradition are clearly identifiable local styles and symbolic vocabularies, and this lavishly illustrated book focuses on one of them: the ceramic works of the Casas Grandes-Paquimé area of northwest Mexico and adjoining parts of New Mexico and Arizona, c. A.D. 1200–1400.

For the first time on a comprehensive scale, expert art historians and an artist-teacher discuss the complex imagery of approximately ninety Casas Grandes vessels with fifty pieces representing other major styles of the Greater Southwest. Superb examples show polychromatic designs of real and mythological animals, together with abstract human figures and remarkably varied geometries, demonstrating the imaginative complexity and exceptional achievement of the Casas Grandes potters. Certain motifs reflect affinities with distant Mesoamerica, yet the authors show that these forms were absorbed into a visual vocabulary that reflected the unique artistic and cosmological outlook of Casas Grandes, within the native Southwestern cultural tradition.

        Book Description

In the early twentieth century, a group of elite East coast women turned to the American Southwest in search of an alternative to European-derived concepts of culture. In Culture in the Marketplace Molly H. Mullin provides a detailed narrative of the growing influence that this network of women had on the Native American art market—as well as the influence these activities had on them—in order to investigate the social construction of value and the history of American concepts of culture.
Drawing on fiction, memoirs, journalistic accounts, and extensive interviews with artists, collectors, and dealers, Mullin shows how anthropological notions of culture were used to valorize Indian art and create a Southwest Indian art market. By turning their attention to Indian affairs and art in Santa Fe, New Mexico, she argues, these women escaped the gender restrictions of their eastern communities and found ways of bridging public and private spheres of influence. Tourism, in turn, became a means of furthering this cultural colonization. Mullin traces the development of aesthetic worth as it was influenced not only by politics and profit but also by gender, class, and regional identities, revealing how notions of “culture” and “authenticity” are fundamentally social ones. She also shows how many of the institutions that the early patrons helped to establish continue to play an important role in the contemporary market for American Indian art.
This book will appeal to audiences in cultural anthropology, art history, American studies, women’s studies, and cultural history.

        Book Description

This reissue of three early essays on Mimbres archaeology and design fills a major gap in the literature on the Mimbres, whose pottery has long fascinated students of the prehistoric Southwest. Fewkes, one of the eminent archaeologists of the early twentieth century, introduced Mimbres art to scholars when he published these essays with the Smithsonian Institution between 1914 and 1924, under the titles Archaeology of the Lower Mimbres Valley, New Mexico, Designs on Prehistoric Pottery from the Mimbres Valley, New Mexico, and Additional Designs on Prehistoric Mimbres Pottery. Long out-of-print, these essays represent the first analysis and description of the complex abstract and representational designs that continue to fascinate us 2,000 years after they were painted.

In fact, I'm signing up for painting classes this week! The plates are magnificent, and the subject matter, Taos, and Taos Pueblo Indians, are filled with beauty and dignity from a time gone by. Highly recommended for all lovers of the Southwest, native cultures, and landscape and oil paintings.

        Book Description

Evocative photographs celebrating the rich culture and dramatic landscapes of the Laguna Pueblo, the native people of the U.S. Southwest. Lee Marmon is America's most renowned Native American photographer and yet this is the first book to showcase his breathtaking photography. This book combined Mr. Marmon's award-winning photographs celebrating the Laguna Pueblo - their distinctive landscapes, their traditions and history - with equally gorgeous prose and poetry by three of our most celebrated Native American writers: Lee's daughter, the novelist Leslie Marmon Silko, and the poets Joy Harpo and Simon Ortiz. With each flash of the camera, Lee Marmon captured a piece of Native American history; this book preserves that precious legacy. The Pueblo Imagination will be lavishly produced, with the highest quality reproductions, including some seventy black-and-white photos printed in duotone and eight pages of arresting color photographps. The text will flow in prose and verse from the images, setting the stage and capturing in words the history preserved in Lee Marmon's unforgettable images.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars elegant and evocative, quietly magical.......2003-11-17

Lee Marmon is a Laguna Pueblo Indian who has been taking photographs of Laguna with professional cameras since 1946.
If you've seen the poster of the elderly Indian man wearing Converse All Stars (the image on this book's cover), you've seen Marmon's work.

This collection of his work since 1946 would be worthwhile if it simply documented the ceremonies, buildings, landscapes, faces and figures-what had changed and what did not---over more than a half century. But this volume is so much more. These are beautiful photographs, mostly in black and white. The stark magic of the Southwestern landscape was captured in the abstract paintings of artists like Georgia O'Keefe and Max Ernst. But black and white photos are inherently abstract, since they turn the world of color into shades and grains. Put a master photographer who knows his subject so intimately together with this landscape and you get one astonishing image after another.

There are wonderful faces, dramatic landscapes, close-ups that let you feel the grain of old wood. There's a different feeling in every photo, indescribable in words. And the feelings can be surprising, like the strange joy in "Girls at a clothesline," with white clothes flying against a wisp of cloud, yet in the foreground is a harsh and radiant edge of stone.

There are a smaller number of color photos, just as accomplished and evocative. There's some prose by Marmon's daughter, writer Leslie Marmon Silko, as well as by writers Joy Harjo and Simon Ortiz. But it's the photographs that are important here. They draw you in, and your eyes and heart expand. If you know someone who loves the mystery and bare majesty of the Southwest, or relishes authentic and beautiful images of American Indian life, this book makes an elegant gift for Christmas or any other occasion. If that person is you, do yourself a favor. You won't have any trouble entering these images. The secrets are there.

        Book Description

In Santa Fe: A Walk Through Time, author Kingsley Hammett takes us on a tour of downtown historic Santa Fe, capturing the architecture in both photographs and essays. He tells the stories of the buildings that have come and gone; who lived, worked, and played in them; and the continual changes that make Santa Fe what it is today-a town of adobe architecture that blends with the high desert landscape, a destination spot for art lovers, culinary enthusiasts, and Epicureans alike. Relive the history, nostalgia, and old-time romance of one of America's favorite cities. Kingsley Hammett has been working as a journalist since 1979 and is publisher of DESIGNER/builder magazine. He holds a master's degree in both journalism and humanities/history. Kingsley is the author of three books on New Mexican furniture: Crafting New Mexican Furniture, Classic New Mexican Furniture, and Early New Mexican Furniture. He has lived in Santa Fe, with his wife Jerilou, for nearly twenty-five years.

I visited Santa Fe 20 years ago and was charmed by the city, enough so that I moved here and have made it my home. I keep meeting other people with the same story.

So what a pleasure it is to find this beautifully photographed love song to Santa Fe! The historical photos are fascinating. I recognize some of the spots, but many places have changed so much. The nice thing is that Santa Fe, while growing and changing, retains is charm and its easygoing atmosphere.

          Book Description

This long-awaited study is the first to examine the Rio Grande Hispanic weaving tradition from 1870 to the present. In the past, the story of the weavers of northern New Mexico has often been distorted in popular and scholarly literature by perpetuating romantic lore that has surrounded the craft and by labeling products for the tourist and curio markets as inauthentic and inferior. Chimayo Weaving emphasizes that the long tradition of Hispanic weaving was born in the interaction among weavers, merchants, and consumers; it explores this trade and how it has changed over time. The authors have examined the historic records of trade in woven goods as well as actual textiles in private and public collections and have interviewed many contemporary weavers. Taken together, these perspectives form a case study of the adaptability of a craft tradition to the modern world.

This thorough and beautifully illustrated study is essential reading for anyone interested in the ongoing tradition of weaving in New Mexico and for anyone who weaves or who wants to appreciate and understand the craft more fully.

            Book Description

A family memoir full of New Mexico flavor, Tortilla Chronicles serves up a hearty helping of the "City Different" from the perspective of the humble, hardworking Romeros, a family honored for its contributions to regional folk arts. Marie Romero Cash, herself a renowned artist, poignantly sketches each family member using his or her own voice. Their stories present a rare glimpse into the life of a traditional Hispano family and provide an antidote to typical nostalgic tourist accounts of 1950s Santa Fe.

One of the main characters is Santa Fe itself, and the narrative tours the city's streets, shops, plaza, and surrounding hills and arroyos in astounding detail. The ancestry and rituals of family life, the culture and religion of northern New Mexico, and the growth of a neighborhood and its children are all part of the recipe.

The traditional Hispanic culture of 1950s Santa Fe comes alive through the members of the hardworking Romero family.

              Book Description

The Camino Real de Tierra Adentro (Royal Road of the Interior Land) is North America's oldest (Juan de Oñate extended the Camino to New Mexico in 1598) and longest (1,500 miles) road. Here, Hal Jackson brings to life this important route connecting Mexico City with Santa Fe, New Mexico. It was the lifeline for administrative, commercial, and ecclesiastical functions in northern Mexico.

The northern section of the Camino Real, the portion in New Mexico and Texas, was designated a National Historical Trail by the U. S. Congress in 2000 and an interpretive and visitor center (the Camino Real Heritage Center) has opened south of Socorro, New Mexico. This guidebook provides the traveler with useful commentary on the entire Camino as it winds its way from New Mexico through Mexico, ending in Mexico City.

Jackson includes narrative accounts collected from a variety of primary sources to add an eyewitness perspective to topics as diverse as sixteenth-century haciendas, colonial presidios, and important rest stops (parajes) on the Camino in New Mexico. There are many historical vignettes plus sixty maps drawn by the author to assist in finding Camino sites. Other information provides the traveler details such as highway numbers, mileage, accommodations, and areas of interest off the main Camino route.

Jackson brings to life this important route which the Spanish extended north into present-day New Mexico in 1598.
