Designing the green skyscrapter do not begin with 1 : 100 scale drawing. But we have to consider all the environmental factors that affect the building.

I think that's the reason why this book contains basic theory of green building, environmental aspects that become an important factor in designing green skyscrapter rather than the skyscrapter itself.

In this book Yeang convincingly described in a hollistic approach, from the basic theory with doubtless reason, the environmental factors and its application in the building with example of his Tokyo-Nara building.

Indeed, this is not an 'easy reading' book. But understanding all the factors is important, not only about the separate issue to ensure the main goal, designing 'true' green skyscrapter as Yeang explained here.

After all, this book is a valuabe resources for those who interest in this field.

    Book Description

Skyscrapers, ever taller, astound us with their immensity and beauty. Despite the challenges associated with their design and safety, there is continued growth in the size and number of tall buildings being built around the world. In this fascinating book, Matthew Wells, a practicing structural engineer, explains the principles behind the construction of skyscrapers and the ways they are designed to withstand such forces as earthquakes, high winds, and fire.

Beginning with a concise architectural and cultural history of the skyscraper, Wells then offers thirty case studies of high profile buildings recently built or under construction by some of the world’s most renowned architectural firms, including Foster and Partners; Zaha Hadid Architects; Cesar Pelli and Associates; the Renzo Piano Building Workshop; and Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill. Each is illustrated in color alongside accompanying text, drawings, plans, and details that show how the building is constructed and what particular innovative design features it incorporates in order to address such issues as sustainability, the needs of mixed-use sites, local vernacular traditions, and technological advancements in building materials.

Skyscrapers features these buildings and more:

    Commerzbank, Frankfurt, Germany

    Petronas Towers, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

    London Bridge Tower, London

    Turning Torso, Malmö, Sweden

AOL Time Warner Center, New York

New York Times Building, New York

5 out of 5 stars Maybe the Best Engineering and Construction Book of its Kind!.......2005-12-24

I have worked in science and engineering for many years and worked on many projects. I keep this book on my bookshelf and read it every few years. It is just wonderful and well written story. I think that I have now read it three times.

It is about the construction of a building in Manhattan at 49st and 8th avenue called Worldwide Plaza. It takes the reader right from the concept through all aspects from zoning, financing, foundation work, steel erection, concrete, marble, mechanical, water leaks, leasing, everything in a nice narrative form, but not dry ...written like a novel and very entertaining.

But what is great is the way all the small problems arise and are solved between all the contractors and trades and suppliers or subcontractors including trips to visit marble suppliers in Italy, laboratories in Florida, etc. This could be problems with brick colors, or steel, or delivery schedules, or street traffic, or water leaks or even alterations to the common areas as the building is finished. It is a nice review of "Just in time" manufacturing on a large scale.

Not for everybody put near perfect for engineers! Realistic, educational, entertaining... a keeper for the bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars This one is a winner!!!.......2003-12-22

I watched the series with fascination and now the book. This is a great way to learn the workings of a fantastic creation and take a peek of the frustrations towards success. I've been looking for the video to purchase, but understand there are none and no plan to create one. WELL GUESS WHAT! I was looking at some old video tapes of mine when I came upon some with no labels. I popped them into the VCR and guess what....that's right...I HAVE IT!!! I guess I recorded it when PBS had it on. For more information you can contact me at tellablvr@yahoo.com

5 out of 5 stars Up, Up and Away.......2002-04-14

I thought this was an all around cool book. This book deals with the whole process of how a building is built, from the sight location, finances, government agencies and construction. You get just the right amount of detail, not so much that you are forcing your way through the book, but enough to really understand it. I like the flow of the book, the author keeps the pace going and you can feel the tension main of the actors are experiencing. The author has done a good job with this book, detailed and interesting. If you ever wanted to know how they build those big building then this is an introductory course.

5 out of 5 stars Same as TV Series?.......2000-12-06

This book is a fascinating look at the entire process of building a skyscraper. Finance, logistics, negotiation, construction, architecture... it's all here. I have one question. I believe this book was once a PBS series... does anyone know if that is available on video? If anyone has any info on that please email me at adeleanddavid@mediaone.com

5 out of 5 stars The give and take in transforming design to finished product.......2000-05-03

I believe the author has done an excellent job of articulating the concessions and compromises made by all the parties in the development of a skycraper. To illustrate the delineation of some of the roles, responsibilities and concomitant frustrations, I quote from the book:

"In an earlier world the architect got on with the drawings. In todays world it's left much more to vendors to produce documents which the architect checks" (page 242)

"We can never work in the final medium of our art, as painters or sculptors usually do, so it's frightening to see the final thing come together being crafted by other hands than your own" (page 299)

"The architects were pretty confident that it wasn't a design fault. The masons were pretty sure that they had built the wall to specifications...The window manufacturer was fairly happy with the windows he had fabricated and shipped...for the mockup. The testing company, which had supervised building the mockup, seemed confident that all the instructions had been followed...As they all talked among themselves, rumors spread." (page 202)

The interface between the consultants, trades, vendors, managers and developer makes for interesting reading with some lessons to be learned.

"The skyscraper is clearly identifiable not only by virtue of its historical development and the specific approach to architecture it embodies, but also because it has an identity easily readable as an architecture type," writes architecture professor Mario Campi in the introduction to this volume. If that's as incomprehensible to you as it is to this reviewer, fear not--despite the semiotic gobbledy-gook of its introduction (not to mention its ridiculous subtitle), Skyscrapers may well be the most accessible book ever published on the topic. It's a veritable skyscraper hall of fame, with each of about 100 of the world's most famous skyscrapers accorded a two-page spread of a few black-and-white photos, plans, and thumbnail info on its architect(s), dimensions, structure, interior installations, façade, and "urban context."

It's all here, starting with the lady most popularly associated with the kick-off of the steel-skeletoned Skyscraper Century--Daniel Burnham's ever-elegant Flatiron Building at the confluence of Fifth Avenue and Broadway in New York City (1902)--and wrapping up with images of the models for such heady works in progress as an elliptical tower in Kuala Lumpur that looks like a giant incandescent shark fin rising up out of the landscape. In between, the book details the usual suspects (the Woolworth Building, the Empire State, Johnson Wax, 860/880 Lke Shore Drive Apartments, Lever House, the Transamerica Pyramid, the Sears Tower, the AT&T Building, and London's Canary Wharf Tower) and the unsung heroes (like New York's deco-era Barclay-Vesey Building, which pioneered the much-copied "ziggurat-style" stepped design to accommodate new laws to keep ever-taller buildings from blocking out natural light on the streets below) as well as the new contenders (Tokyo's Millennium Tower, Hong Kong's origami-like Bank of China) and the never-should-have-happened (Trump Tower, that tacky gold-plated temple to 1980s Gotham greed; or Kevin Roche's brutally ugly Knights of Columbus building in New Haven, Connecticut).

What's most interesting is how, after so many decades of huge upturned shoeboxes, so many of the new buildings--like Cesar Pelli's Nationsbank Corporate Center in Charlotte, North Carolina--have their luminous high-tech envelopes wrapped around new versions of the more shapely forms of their deco grandparents.

All around, no startling new insights or stellar photography here but a great lightweight thumbnail "who's who" among our modern-day cathedrals of industry and a fun coffee-table flip-through too. --Timothy Murphy

    Book Description

Skyscrapers have been a source of fascination to the expert and layman alike since the emergence of this building type in the nineteenth century and this volume presents a selection of the most captivating examples ranging from the skyscrapers of the 1890s to contemporary projects. Following a general introduction, a large format double page is devoted to each skyscraper and crucial aspects such as construction and facade details, load-bearing structures and essential technical features are analysed in text and illustrations. Each building is documented systematically enabling the reader to compare the buildings presented. The buildings and projects in this compendium were all innovative, epoch-making buildings in their day and provide a critical overview of the developement in this type of architecture. A wealth of visual material approximately 1000 plans, photographs, technical and axonometric drawings ensure that this volume is a detailed and valuable reference work.

5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful book showing over 90 of the most noteworthy and best known skyscrapers from around the world........2007-03-29

The first thing you will be impressed with this book is the fine photograph on the cover. It would have been impossible to choose one skyscraper from all those covered to put on the cover. So,if you can't pick one;then why not put them all on the cover;which they did. Each skyscraper was reproduced in wood at a scale of 1:2000. The largest structure in the picture is of the One-Mile High Skyscraper that Frank Lloyd Wright designed in 1956 .It was to be built in Chicago, but was never constructed. One day,its time will surely come. The model on the cover dramatically shows what a gargantuan structure this would be compared with anything built to date.
As you go through the book you will be treated with photographs of all the skyscrapers, the context in which it was built , descriptions and illustrations detailing their structural design, typical floor-plans,circulation and facade details. Each structure is accompanied with some of its noteworthy design features.
Since these structures were built to accomodate man;it is fascinating to see how man and these strucures inter-relate.
It is hard to pick a favorite from so many excellent designs;but there is one particular building that interested me,more as an oddity than anything else. That being the Nakagin Capsule Tower in Tokyo,Japan, completed in 1972.This is a structure composed of 132 mobile residential units,of 20 cubic meters. That converts to 706 square feet.Assuming a ceiling height of 8 feet; that would result in a tiny room of 88 sq.ft. ;something like 11 X 8 feet.I find it unimaginable how one can think of magnificent skyscrapers and at the same time accept living in such a cubby hole.Such a tenant could ask himself only one question "With all this progress, where did I go wrong?".This reminds me of the apartment complex built in Russia many years ago. The Architect did ont equip it with any elevator. When the tenants raised a huge fuss over that;the government made the Architect move to the top floor.I think it would be poetic justice if Kisho Kurokawa was were to call one of these modules his abode.
Another building that was of personal interest to me was the AT&T Building in New York, completed in 1984. I was working in the HQ Building Design Group of AT&T at the time this building was proposed by the Architects. When we first saw the proposal,we were nothing short of flabbergasted. Our first thought was that it resembled a Chippendale dresser. Little did we think at the time ,that Mr Johnson, who we realized to be the best of the best, was going to have such an impact on skyscraper design,as he did with this building.Although there are many buildings, particularly around Malls that have tried to incorporate Johnson's designs;I have yet to see one that even closely competes with his success.
All in all a wonderful trip around some of the world's finest skyscrapers.

    Book Description

What constitutes a high-rise building? A high-rise is, in fact, any building with more than 9 storeys and not just those striking skyscrapers which shape modern city skylines. In the past architects who designed such structures used to be the exception but in the last 10 years more and more architectural offices have begun to focus on this type of building. However, the sheer complexity of designing and planning the construction of a high-rise as opposed to other building types requires a wealth of specialized experience and expertise. The High-Rise Manual is the first comprehensive reference work on this subject. All relevant aspects of such an undertaking are examined in detail by some 24 specialist authors. Each step is extensively documented including the initial project planning, the building organisation, the laying of the foundations, the supporting structure, the building technology, the office design, and the Facility Management. 68 mostly built projects are depicted in this sizable survey mostly by excellent, large photos, but also by renderings, plans, models, sketches, site plans, details, sections, hard line presentation drawings, etc., but not more tech. drawings than one or two small ones per project. Interestingly, the SEG Apartment Tower presented on pp. 88-89 has a design of its one side found latter in all four sides of the Freedom Tower by David Childs.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but a coffee table book at best.......2000-08-21

After seeing the exhibit by the same name at the Art Institute of Chicago, I found the book to have some disappointments: many of the exhibits from the museum were not mentioned in the book, some of the book's pictures were poorly reproduced (probably photographed from the exhibit's panels or enlarged from 35-mm slides), and some of the projects weren't discussed as in-depth as the museum exhibit. I got the feeling that this book was written not as an exhibit guide (even though the Art Institute of Chicago advertised it is the companion book to the exhibit by the same name), but as a stand-alone book about a few noteworthy projects.

4 out of 5 stars Great Conversation Piece.......2000-06-21

This is a perfect book for the coffee table. It has a nice mix of Architecture from around the world with quite a mix of building sizes and shapes. It is more global than expected and that is a plus. Anyone looking for significant design details may be disappointed. Skyscaper afficinados will wish for more depth. A good reference guide.

Illustrated with David Bellamy's evocative watercolours, the book follows a similar approach to the previous course and is divided into four main sections: the preparatory planning stages, with advice on choosing materials and working on location; guidelines on how to give your paintings more impact through imaginative composition, lighting and mood; more exciting watercolour techniques; and specific projects and exhibition work. Also included are a number of practical exercises, relating to paintings featured in a gallery at the end of the book, and several step-by-step demonstrations.

This book, and the video that came out about the same time, are among the best watercolour publications that I have seen. I am an ardent fan of David Bellamy and heartily recommend this and any other of his books to all watercolour painters, whether expert or, like me, novice. They are full of information and ideas that can help make us all better painters. I have almost all his books and videos and never tire of looking at them and learning.
