I purchased this to study for the CDT exam. It is very complete, but reads (as you'd expect) more like a specification than a textbook. Five stars for completeness, and five stars for cure for insomnia.
Excellent counterpart to the AIA Handbook........2007-01-07
First off, I'm an architect, so my review is written from that perspective.
This is a great companion to the AIA Handbook. If the AIA Handbook is about running a firm, the CSI PRM is about running a project. An oversimplification, yes, but both books are so dense and full of critical information, no 100 word review could do either justice.
The CD includes many useful references including an overview of MasterFormat and a list of divisions / sections, but does not include the entire MasterFormat "product" (the full MF product includes 95-04 conversion tools and additional documentation).
My only complaint is that the text is so dense it takes a lot of time and energy to absorb all of the information within. :) It's as if they took a 1000 page tome and compressed it into 300 pages. (The product description says 1200 pages, but it's only an inch thick, so I'm guessing 300 pp.)
A must-have for architects who strive to deliver projects in a more expert and professional manner, and wish to more effectively interface with contractors during the construction phase. If you're a pure "designer" or only involved with the front end of projects this will probably stay on the shelf, but if you're responsible for the rest of the process (DD through construction and occupancy) this book is essential.
I can't believe I made it through 6 years of architectural education without being required to own this book.

Tricky as it may sound to execute, this is a solid, concise introduction to reward strategy and management. Authors Michael Armstrong and Helen Murlis begin with the broadest, most elementary definition of reward strategy and management, but quickly dig down to pay dirt. They provide insider details on job evaluation schemes, antidiscrimination legislation, motivation and the other logistical choices required for reward management. Considered a classic by some in the field, their book offers quite a granular discussion of grade and pay structures, performance management, contingent pay and even the use of consultants. Its primary flaw is its steady use of one author's employer - the Hay Group consulting firm - as the constant exemplar of reward scheme models and methods. Not many readers know about this book that is literally the most "Complete" book on science fair projects out there. This is an all-new revision of the original book that came out in the 90's and it has been updated with great information, drawings, photos and more. It is the best resource for students who need to do a science fair project and need to know everything from finding a topic to carrying out an experiment to delivering a presentation before judges. Resourceful ways in which to find a topic, where to go for help, how to measure and calculate data, etc. There are also 50 classic sample project outlines with illustrations that give students ideas for projects in all scientific disciplines, an ample list of possible project topics, a detailed list of possible subject areas to find a topic in, with a useful list of websites where a student can find information on almost any topic, scientific supply stores across the US and Canada, a list of every science fair in the country and around the world and their corresponding websites (where available), and a list other competitions students can enter their projects in. In all my years of working with our school science fair, this book is still the authority on the subject. Highly recommended for all in grades 5-12.

Painting Coastal Scenes.......2007-07-01
Well known artist Ray Campbell Smith shows how to paint with watercolors a subject that can be a challange to paint yet in a easy to understand way. Painting Coastal scenes is a great book that will help the painter understand a much easier way to record the coastal life. Ray Campbell Smith is a another great artist much like Ron Ranson. The paintings in the book hold fantastic loose brush work in a low key style.
Dull subjects, ok tutorials.......2007-03-01
While I liked the tutorials in "Painting Coastal Scenes", I found the subject matter and color palettes dull indeed. However, this is English (clench your teeth when you say "English") watercolour and this means that natural light, and monotone scenes that reproduce a foggy landscape or waterscape are to be admired and emulated.
There were a few interesting tutorials on painting boats and shine on water, but very few that dealt with how to represent marshy plantlife on gleaming water. This book seems to be more suited to the OTHER side of the pond. If you live on an estuary (as I do) you will need to check some other sources of painterly expression...unless you happen to like Mr. Smith's style of watercolor. I found it dull and boring, though truthful to its subject. I was looking for a different way to represent this subject and this book simply did not inspire me at all.

Outstanding book, but not for beginners........2007-09-13
This book is not a beginners watercolor technique book. It is more for the advanced watercolorist to understand design methods to create drama in a painting, but beginners can certainly benefit from all the information in this book and be inspired by the stunning and dramatic coastal scenes that Mr. Plummer teaches through his many demonstrations and explanations of how to create drama and excitement in painting coastal scenes in watercolor.
Mr. Plummer teaches and demonstrates about things that can add drama to a painting such as using light, exagerating shadows, adding warm color on a generally cool scene, using analagous colors on the color wheel to create continuity, connecting shapes, deciding tonal values, etc.. He breaks the coastal elements into such things as sky, surf, calm water, reflections, rocks, ledges and beaches, vegetation, boats, and buildings.
It's an absolutely stunning book and each painting is certainly filled with enormous energy through the use of design methods that Carlton Plummer teaches and demonstrates in this book. I'm somewhat a beginner, but I love this book even though it would be more helpful to me if I were a bit more advanced. Anyone with an interest in watercolor can enjoy this beautiful book.

A must have book if you like to paint marine paintings or even paint in watercolor. Who better then Carlton Plummer to show the artist ways to paint the coast in watercolor? This book is full of a life time of helpfull information and great paintings to put the artist on the track to feeling the texture of marine life in watercolor.

i received this as a gift from my son. not for a beginner, but great instructional techniques. a book chocked full of fabulous paintings and demos. i cant put it down. just makes you want to paint maine scenes!
