Great condition! I remember this childhood book being illustrated in navy blue ink. Has this been changed? I was looking forward to that. Great service. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful story.......2007-03-10

I had this book when I was a child and bought it for my grand-neice because I love the book. I was so happy to see that it is still in print. It is a wonderful little story and the illustrations are amazing. I highly recommend this story for all youngsters.

5 out of 5 stars Family favorite!!!.......2006-12-28

One of my daughter's favorite books, and one of my favorites to read to her. She adores it at two and I'm sure she'll still love it years from now. It has a sense of timelessness to it, and she gets a real kick out of Sal's family taking a boat to the grocery. Pure fun, a sweet, wonderful book.

4 out of 5 stars Really nice story.......2006-06-30

I bought this book to give to one of my kids as a reward for doing a great job on report card! I haven't given it to my daughter just yet but I have read the book and thought it was really great. A nice book for children in the ages of 6ish to 8ish.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite McCloskey book.......2006-06-27

The artwork is great. The story, while long and a bit dated, has broad appeal. Even if today's kids cannot relate to a "back to nature" scenario they will surely become more engaged the next time you take them to the beach or on a boat and they will be excited to lose their teeth.

This is a classic that should be in every home where children reside or visit.

Book Description

Maine's beauty has always captured hearts, but has never been for the faint of heart. Its severe climate and geographical remoteness have no use for fussy, high-design and big-city styles. Maine Country is about living with pragmatic grace. But grace doesn't preclude bold colors and striking forms! In the sumptuous pictures throughout this book, which cover the diversity of Maine's landscape-from inland lakes to the salty coast, from rural landscapes to city dwelling, from architecture in snow to Maine's celebrations of summer-Carol Bass proves that Maine style goes far beyond stereotyped lobster traps. And because Mainers highly prize self-reliance and authenticity, all of the designs you'll find here are products of the real people who live real lives. When the summer folks have gone home, the subtly-nuanced individuality of life in Maine, shines out like a lighthouse beacon. Carol Bass is the owner of Cottage Style Furniture, and also the author of The Cottage Book.

5 out of 5 stars Cultivates a Sense of Wonder.......2006-07-27

"Maine, a geographical outpost thrust into the wild North Atlantic, has offered romance, mystery, retreat, and renewal to hundreds of thousands of people over the years." ~ Carol Bass

Thinking about Maine makes me wonder about two of my best friends in the world and what their lives were like growing up in this beautiful area. Now and then they tell me about the winters or school life, but now I have pictures to go with the stories. The pictures are gorgeous and are authentic representations of the Maine lifestyle and culture.

Throughout the book, advice is given on how to bring the feeling of Maine into your home. You may want to paint a picnic table or cook up a fish chowder. I found a quilt that has a very cozy Maine feeling to it and they suggested I put more red cushions in the living room.

General stores are also a feature and Carol Bass shows you which flowers to plant to give your garden added beauty.

I just know that one day I won't have to keep dreaming about a trip to Maine, I'll be there at a bed and breakfast where the breeze blows curtains through an open window, wandering down country roads and maybe even writing a poem while overlooking the water. The Blueberry Hill Farm Bed & Breakfast looks fascinating to visit in the late summer or early autumn.

"Sixty thousand fun-loving visitors had up to Unity each fall to reconnect with rural living, to join in this feast for the senses, and to participate in a down-home celebration of the season's harvests: organic apples and squash, sunflowers and late-blooming perennials, fresh berry pies, homemade honeys and jams, and the best cottage cheese and goat's cheese this side of heaven."

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars This one grows on you.......2006-11-14

I was a bit disappointed at first, as I was looking for more of a 1-2-3 approach. But I picked the book up again a couple of days later, and found lots of useful information in it. It still wasn't exactly what I was looking for, but well written and informative nonetheless.

3 out of 5 stars Common Sense with a New Age, Eco-Aware Twist.......2004-06-20

This book begins, and ends, on a hopeful note. Its message is a positive one. There is considerable truth in what Ms. Maine says. Many people believe that big is good, but big is often bloated, and not long after, bankrupt. For some people, small can be both beautiful and happy.

From the start, I do not believe Ms. Maine intended to write a business book based on the standard boiler plate model for such books. She has endeavored to put something of herself, and her outlook on life into the text, and it shows. Granted, on first pass, the New Age references and more than a few statements are a bit off-putting, especially if you, like me, are skeptical by nature, but if the book is read very closely, you will find that all the basic ingredients of a Start Your Own Business Book are there.

For example, she makes these and other questionable claims throughout the book such as: society and the planet are going to hell in a hand-basket. What is the solution, you ask? Start an herbal bodycare business! Or, my personal favorite: the natural food and bodycare market is experiencing an annual growth rate of 15 percent. With that kind of growth rate, given the anemic 1 to 3 percent growth rates in mature general retail categories like food and cosmetics, it will not be long before those godless multinationals pick up the scent. In fact, it turns out they have picked up the scent, and are closing in these 'alternative' categories.

However, this is not to say that there is no value or credibility in the text- far from it. The real value of this text resides in the stories of those folks, like Ms. Maine, who set up their own successful herbal bodycare business, and Ms. Maine's insistence that you think and plan about your herbal bodycare business. This last bit is most important, as it seems everyone and her mother is involved in this area nowadays (in fact, that is LITERALLY the case) so it pays to think of how you can be different and unique, yet still offer value.

Moreover, Ms. Maine did it the right way, that is, the smart way: she got the business right BEFORE she went into business. That means getting a clear idea of the business (what you offer versus what customers really want and will pay for), putting some flesh to the concept, and laying down a well-reasoned plan. It also means examining various scenarios WITHOUT numbers and prepping yourself for mis-haps, as nothing will EVER go exactly as planned. Ms. Maine, as well as the people she profiles, all started small, worked in and around the herbal bodycare business for a few years before going out on their own, and all of them got their businesses off the ground with five thousand dollars or less, thus demonstrating that it can be done on the literal 'shoestring budget'. As Liz Claiborne once said, 'Start with a low overhead and be willing to everything yourself.'

My somewhat jaded advice to anyone thinking about going into this or any other business is this: Before you go into business, it is all about thinking, reasoning and planning. Once you go into business, it is all about execution. When you go into business with a flawed concept, even the most mundane annoyances can morph into major and insurmountable problems, and will ultimately kill your business. Get the concept right, and execute flawlessly. That ways lies blockbuster success. Money may be an initial barrier, but you creative types should be able to cobble together what you need from the odd bits and pieces here and there and wow the customer with your presentation and artistic flair. Remember this one lesson from the internet company boom: a lot of money behind a flawed concept equals a fantastic and bankrupt failure. Start simple, start small, and work within a limited budget. That will force you to unleash your creativity. More often than not, the more money we have, the less carefully we think, and the dumber the ideas that come to the fore.

The target audience for this book is not highly accomplished over-achievers with a bent for numbers and order. Rather, this is a book for those free-spirited, creative, chaotic, artsy types who often go by the moniker of 'Right-Brain Person'. There is a definite bias in the text towards the burned-out female company employee working for a god-less, soul-less corporation, and as such, the book is open to the charge of pandering to an escapist fantasy- one that more than a few of us, male or female, in the same bind share.

I can also say with certainty that the book is more of an exercise in building the reader's self-confidence about starting such a business, and less of a guide to the inner workings of an herbal bodycare business. That, however, is most likely the intended objective- giving those who may not have the confidence to start such a venture a few ideas and a little prodding. Ms. Maine is planting a seed, I think, in a certain type of person, preferably young, single and female but a little unsure of herself. Although I did not get much out of the book (thus three stars), this person I believe will derive the most out of the book.

1 out of 5 stars More Memoirs than Advice.......2002-01-18

This book didn't stay in my library for long. I'm glad that I read it and I did glean some good ideas but it wasn't at all what I expected based on the title. I appreciate many of Ms. Maine's points but the book is not really about the Herbal Body Care Business. It's about creating a philosophy of business, really your Mission Statement, and the goals that produces. The philosophy is blatantly New Age and so, not for everyone. The best part is the many stories of other soap makers.

Ms. Maine is one of my favorite soapmaking book authors. She is the owner of one of the largest businesses of it's kind. She has shared her knowledge over the years with others who would like to make soap via her many books on the market. Those books are the how-to's. This one, by the author's own admission is a "how-can".

It was interesting but not an essential book for either the hobby or professional soap maker's library.

1 out of 5 stars Not much help to me........2001-01-26

I found this book to contain general information on starting any type of business, such as licensing information and advice on running a business. If you're looking for information and help specifically for starting an herbal bodycare business, you won't find it in this book.

1 out of 5 stars herbal bodycare business.......2000-05-18

Somone those who really planning about this business category can not get a ace help from this book. This book don't mention about real business set up steps with local government and state who belonged. It can't be a bonus to someone like you who is a beginner for the business of this. If your need a tips for the business relationships between human, you can buy it without wastage of money. If not, it can be a little loss.

Book Description

For nearly twenty-five years, poet Baron Wormser and his family lived in a house in Maine with no electricity or running water. They grew much of their own food, carried water by hand, and read by the light of kerosene lamps. They considered themselves part of the "back to the land" movement, but their choice to live off the grid was neither statement nor protest: they simply had built their house too far from the road and could not afford to bring in power lines. Over the years, they settled in to a life that centered on what Thoreau called "the essential facts."

In this graceful meditation, Wormser similarly spurns ideology in favor of observation, exploration, and reflection. "When we look for one thread of motive," he writes, "we are, in all likelihood, deceiving ourselves." His refusal to be satisfied with the obvious explanation, the single thread of motive, makes him a keen and sympathetic observer of his neighbors and community, a perceptive reader of poetry and literature, and an honest and unselfconscious analyst of his own responses to the natural world. The result is a series of candid personal essays on community and isolation, nature, civilization, and poetry.

5 out of 5 stars Best memoir.......2007-03-10

I hope everyone reads this book. It is charmingly written and a worthwhile read from the recent former poet laureate of Maine. His story motivates us all with its straighforward nature. Thank you, Baron Wormser and book seller.

5 out of 5 stars thoughtful and thought provoking.......2007-03-02

Wonderfully crafted language. A polished gem. Resonance.
Few books, in recent years, have made me cry.
This one did.

5 out of 5 stars This book should make the small mind uncomfortable........2007-02-18

This is the best memoir America has produced since Walden. It is the honest expression of intelligence, simplicity, humility, and wisdom. These qualities upset the small mind which perceives everything in its own terms of egotism. But they are actually the small and individual facets of anyone who reflects the big mind. Mr. Wormser and his wife are polished mirrors and these essays are small gems of true humanity. While some essays may resonate more in this or that reader, every essay is a living child of the author and lives comfortably in the mind of the reader on its own merits. I'll stop before I say too much.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant meditation on writing, life, the natural world.......2007-01-03

Wormser is a sage, playful, exacting, pure writer, and this book is an absolute treat. The structure is wonderfully unconventional--his thoughts glide from one focused argument or narrative to the next like a bird moving from branch to branch in the woods. Looking forward to reading more prose (and poetry) from this author.

    Book Description

Elizabeth Garber's collection of poems invites us to intimately experience her vision of the small coastal town in Maine where she lives. Through her eyes, we share the poignancy of her observations throughout a year of seasons. Each poem is lovingly crafted, richly compelling and glows with a radiant awareness.

Warm yourself with haiku composed while she cross-country skis on fresh snow along a stream. Refresh yourself with a poem of kayaking at dawn out of a small harbor. Feel the rhythm of a daily life, walking past streets of white clapboard houses on her morning walk to the ocean and listening to patient stories in her acupuncture office.

You will be moved and changed from reading her poems honoring the grief of a widower, her son turning 18, and the end of a romance. You'll find yourself seeing more deeply into the simple moments of your life after reading a poem about shopping with her daughter, and playing in a blizzard with her mother. This collection awakens a yearning for more awareness, joy and compassion in our daily lives.

      Book Description

Down East Yankee John Gould, age ninety-two, has spent most of the last century observing and writing about the human condition. Now he presents a whole new perspective on life as he leads us into the brave new world of the assisted-living facility. Charming, sarcastic, despairing, flip, taciturn, erudite, and altogether wonderful--with a razor sharp wit and a knack for turning a phrase--Mr. Gould is an American original and a perfect tour guide. Whether he's complaining to management about his apartment windows that don't open or socializing with the other "inmates" at happy hour; whether wondering why they put a napkin over the stone-cold bread at dinner or taking comfort in the memories ("making do with the reruns") of his loving and eccentric collection of old friends and colleagues from Maine, Mr. Gould proves that you can write a funny book about a serious subject, namely, how we treat our elderly.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars John Gould has prepared me for my turn in 'Rhapsody Home'.......2002-06-19

I purchased my copy of John Gould's "Rhapsody Home" when vacationing on midcoast Maine near his hometown of Rockland. Knowing that Gould was somewhere nearby made the reading that much more meaningful for me. I also related in these ways: There may be a 'Rhapsody Home' in my not too distant future. Also, unable to contain my enthuisiasm for the book, I read select passages aloud to my wife who retired as the head RN at a 'Rhapsody Home.' The nature of her responses validated for me the authenticity of John Gould's rhapsodic musings.

4 out of 5 stars Gruffly charming, and wise.......2000-12-30

Odds are this is the best book by a nonagenarian you are likely to read this year. Gould, a Down East Yankee and columnist for the Christian Science Monitor since 1942, offers a collection of short commentaries from an assisted living center. The book isn't simply a humorous indictment of the foibles and peculiarities of life in a retirement home (though there is plenty of that, from comments about food to the saga of the unopenable window and the familiar refrain "There is nothing to be done about it"). The author ranges across all his 92 years to draw on memories of doctors, raising bees with his Grandfather, and the perfect tomato.

This is a great book for reading out loud, my wife and I found -- the sentences tend to be short and simple, belying the emotional nuances and complexity of the thoughts underneath. The author is not a simple, genteel sort, despite the appearance of his prose. There are passages on the joys of farting humor, reproductions of the light verse with which he lampooned the failures of the management (these never survived more than three minutes on the bulletin board because they "offended the staff"), and a truly fierce (but nevertheless funny) indictment of the insurance industry.

Think of this book as Robert Fulghum in a retirement home and you'll be close to it.

5 out of 5 stars A must for anyone who is, knows, or plans to be, an elder........2000-12-14

A long term care and assisted living administrator for manyyears, this book amused me, unnerved me, angered me. I hooted withlaughter and got choked up with sympathy. A gifted wordsmith and storyteller both, Gould spun a tale I couldn't put down. I thoroughlyenjoyed digesting his delicious words and phrases. Educational, entertaining and absorbing; a must read for any aged reader. LindaLaPointe,MRA,...

              Book Description

The bestiary - a book of animals, both real and mythical - is one of the most interesting and appealing medieval artefacts. The `Second-family' bestiary is the most important and frequently produced version (some 49 known manuscripts exist). Of English origin and predominantly English production, it boasts a spiritual text `modernized' to meet the needs of its time, and features exceptional illustrations. This study addresses the work's purpose and audience, challenging previous assumptions with direct evidence in the manuscripts themselves, linking their use to teachers at the elementary-school level, and exploring the art, the text, and the cultural context for the bestiary. It includes a critical edition and new English translation, and a catalogue raisonné of the manuscripts. Fully illustrated. WILLENE B. CLARK is Professor of Art History Emerita at Marlboro College, Vermont.

              Book Description

Black Dog stalks travelers on the moors, and just hearing its footsteps can kill. A single glance from a basilisk is fatal. Wyverns -- two-legged dragons with wings -- attack castles and villages from the air.

Hundreds of years ago, medieval scholars believed the world was filled with strange and terrifying creatures. They wrote about them in bestiaries -- collections of facts, myths, and stories about animals. Here are twenty-six creatures from those medieval legends, from the two-headed amphisbaena to the fierce ziphius, a water-owl that preys on ships and sailors. Detailed, dramatic paintings based on illuminated manuscripts will transport you to the Middle Ages -- when much of the world was still unknown and mysterious terrors haunted the night.

Pleasing to the eye and stimulating to the imagination, this book describes and depicts twenty-six "fabulous beasts" who were once the thing of everyday legend in times past. An excellent book to refer to time and again, and one children should love. Well-illustrated and nicely-written, this is a good work to add to the home library of anyone who loves the past, the landscapes of Medieval fantasy, or who simply appreciates colorful art.

My sons and I have been reading and rereading this book for four years, since they were 4 and 7 years old. At 8 and 11, it's still our favorite. Just the right amount of information, great illustrations, and a starting point for terrific imaginings!

5 out of 5 stars Great way to teach students about the Middle Ages.......2000-05-19

I have taught at both the Middle and High School levels and found that Bestiary: An Illuminated Alphabet of Medieval Beasts and Illuminations both by Jonathan Hunt are a wonderful way to introduce the medieval period to young adults. These books are not just children's books. Bestiary: An Illuminated Alphabet of Medieval Beasts and Illuminations introduce the students to important vocabulary words and mythological creatures from this fascinating time period. This is a great way for students to relate to the period in a nonthreatening manner. These books allow me to make the Middle Ages fun. They are both filled with information as well as visually stimulating. The author takes each letter of the alphabet and associates it with something medieval in Illuminations and something mythological in Bestiary: An Illuminated Alphabet of Medieval Beast. The illustrations are breathtaking in both. You will learn something new with each reading. I highly recommend both books to young and old alike.

This fascinating book explores the history, techniques, and cultural significance of medieval aquamanilia, cast metal objects used to pour water for hand washing in religious and secular contexts. Usually created in appealing animal or human forms, aquamanilia feature two openings, one for filling and the other for pouring. They represent the first emergence of hollow-cast vessels in Western Europe and a significant development in the history of technology. The book presents and catalogues the entire aquamanilia collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art for the first time, as well as selected examples from other collections and other related medieval objects.

This is indeed an excellent book for those interested in history and biology. ~The Book of Beasts~ is a translation from Latin of a Twelfth century bestiary. It was written as a serious scientific study of zoology, despite giving equal precedence to dogs, horses, lions, dragons, and unicorns. This was the world of wildlife as the people of the 1100's saw it. It includes such beliefs as "when a lioness gives birth to her cubs, she brings them forth dead and lays them up lifeless for three days - until thier father, coming on the third day, breathes in thier faces, and makes them alive." (direct quote) The book also has an extensive appendix, detailing the history of the original manuscript of this bestiary, and information on ancient bestiaries as a whole. Further, the author tells us "No Latin prose bestiary has ever before been printed, even in Latin. This is the first and only English translation in print. . ." This is an invaluable reference to any students of historical sciences, especially biological/zoological sciences, or to any simply interested in the subjects. Very highly recommended.

                  Book Description

The Beast Within offers a unique exploration of the use of and attitude towards animals in medieval society. In the process, the volume sheds light on modern environmental concerns by tracing the roots of our current views about animals.

Joyce E. Salisbury surveys the ways in which inhabitants of Western Europe thought of and dealt with their animals from the 4th to the 14th centuries. She explores the impact of Christianity on our views of animals, and demonstrates the rediscovery, in the twelfth century, of the idea of an animal side to humans that made people start thinking of themselves as animals.

The Beast Within illustrates how, as property, food and sexual objects, animals in the middles ages had a distinct, and at times, odd relationship with the people and world around them. For example, animals viewed as property during the period shared in labor and increased their owners' status. However, these animals were regularly punished for the acts of their owners and owners were held responsible for the animals' behavior as well. When animals served as sexual objects for humans, much reflection, debate and even legislation was the result. Mythological and metaphoric animals also played important roles in the fables and religion of the day changing the views of humans about the beasts and themselves.

The Beast Within provides an interdisciplinary approach to the subject, weaving a historical narrative that includes economic, legal, theological, literary and artistic sources. A provocative and thorough work, this volume will inform and enlighten current debates on animal rights and offer an original contribution to the historical study of animals.

Well-researched treatment of Western society's relationships with the domestic animal kingdom. Citing literature, art and historical accounts, this book traces the history of animals as fictional characters, anthropomorphic characters, beasts of burden, food, companions, and even lovers to humans. Interesting and enlightening stories accompany statistics to unjudgmentally describe these relationships and society's reaction.

I would love to see a sequel dealing with other cultures.

As an Albertist for over ten years now, please do accept my judgement on this book where it may be found. As publisher of the only Complete Works of Albertus Magnus, I was delighted to read this translated summary from Albert's Opera Omnia. Amazon is offering another work, much fuller in scope on the De Animalibus of Albert, but I have not read it yet. Still, that is probably a very good offering as well (as Father Wallace O.P., the fine Dominican Scholar, guided Ken Kitchell, editing author of the newer work).
